USB Ports on my MacBook Pro are not working

My MacBook Pro (Original) USB ports recently stopped working. They come up in system profiler as being there, but when I connect a device, such as a flash drive, no leds turn on, and no power is given to it. I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, but all to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help

I had a nearly identical issue today with a new CTO MacBook Pro...specifically, the USB ports on this new unit were unresponsive to devices being plugged to their slots. We reset SMC to no avail, unplugged all other non-essential peripherals, and still no change.
We were specifically trying to boot a previously functioning Seagate hard drive with a fully intact install of Snow Leopard. Eventually the MBP detected the drive and read the contents. We selected the externally connected drive for startup (which S/L found without issue) in System Prefs. At boot, no progress further than Apple logo (without animated gears indicating some type of load process).
Moved to an identically equipped secondary Thunderbolt MBP which presented with exact same issue. To further verify this was an issue with the USB ports on a Thunderbolt model MBP, we attempted boot of the externally connected drive to an iMac and then a MacMini. Both of these units booted the drive without issue. The Thunderbolt MBPs can see the drive, read the contents, but can't boot them.
Disk Utility verified and ran repair on the external drive and reported zero problems.
Both MBPs are being returned to Apple. Too much to risk for only having two USB ports.

The USB ports on my 30" Cinema HD display appear to not work. The monitor has not been used for almost a year, when I upgraded to a new Mac Book Pro and the 27" retina display. Now I need to move the computer back and forth between two locations using the two displays. The need for operating USB ports is essential. Any ideas. The display appears entirely normal. The fix is a new logic board. It might be tempting to turn off the computer and start poking around inside to fix it yourself but you risk separating the port from the logic board and doing even more damage.

I can run everything through the usb port, including another manufacturer's 4G stick. The 4G stick that doesnt work on my Air works on my son's. The only difference I can find? Mavericks!

Stick with Sandisk or otherwise reputable memory sticks for your Macbook.
What do you mean by "another manufacturer"? Apple doesnt make thumb drives, .....no computer mfg. makes them, however HP has their name on one

Have you checked the Sound Preferences under the System Preferences and set it to USB speaker for the sound output? Sometimes it can change on its own or after and update of an App or the OS?

You have 17 options to save as in Open Office, one of which is .doc files, yes it needs to be saved manually.
You may be able to default to DOC, but have not tried same.
Since Open Office is 99% same as Word, I use it, or Word, either one. Open Office is a bit less buggy than Word 11'

It shouldn't but sometimes deleting the list of networks actually does solve the problem you are describing. Have you turned WiFi off and then back on on the computer?

They might actually be the same Apple ID. When you have an email and use it to log into iCloud it will create an iCloud alias for you. I have an @live.no appleID, which also has an @iCloud.com alias that are otherwise identical.
If you log into applied.apple.com with the @gmail.com account you should see the @iCloud.com as an "alternate" email address.
You might also have created a new iCloud account/Apple ID when you used iCloud the first time. Then this @iCloud.com will not be connected to you @gmail.com address or any other mail addresses. You can then log out of that Apple ID at Settings>iCloud and log in with this @gmail.com Apple ID and sync contacts.
