Suggest a good photo duplicate cleaner for a Mac

I have MANY duplicate photos that I need to delete.  Can you suggest a good duplicate finder for my Mac PC?

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.

  • HT2509 How to use duplicate cleaner for I Photo?

I downloaded duplicate cleaner for I Photo and could not get it to work.
When it posted to go to Library in finder and I do not have library listed but I do have pictures listed (which are files) so it would not work when I cloicked to activate the clean up.  How do I get I Photo library to my finder so I can get Duplicate cleaner to work?

Consider dupeGuru.  I have heard of users having good results with it.

    I.) Version Information:

Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto version 1.8 (1.8.01)
    OS X Yosemite (version 10.10.1)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
I have only one iPhoto library.  I have launched iPhoto prior to launching 'Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto."
II.) Error message:  "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto cannot continue as Library is not selected in iPhoto.  Please start iPhoto and select a library."
    III.) What i've tried:
1.) disabled photo stream in iPhoto.
2.) launched iPhoto while holding command & option
      a.) - Repair Permissiones
      b.) Rebuild Thumbnails
      c.) Repair Database
      d.) Rebuild Database
3.) Disk Utility --> verify & (later) repair disk permissions.
4.) (after turning off file vault encryption) I ran resetpassword from the terminal and reset permissions exactly as described here:  http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
5.) Deleted "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" (and subsequently recreated it at 1st launch of iPhoto)
6.) Verified that my user account is the owner of my iPhoto library
7.) Against my better judgement, I called their support.  I even participated in the Log Me In Rescue support session.  I hung up when their agent told me to reset Safari.
I'd like to think that I'm not an idiot, but I have tried everything I could think of.  I haven't been able to find much online.  I understand that this is 3rd party software, but I don't know where else to post this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Old Toad,
Thanks for your response.  I was just about to try your suggestion when I opened Mail.  In my frustration, I emailed their support last night.  To my surprise, they offered a solution.  I just downloaded this "beta" version, and it worked.  I just removed several duplicates.  I have posted the resolution that worked for me below.  Again, thank you for your suggestion.

  • Used "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" now my video files in iPhoto have an error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."

As the title states, I used the app "Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto" to get rid of 6 GB of duplicate pictures.  However, now when I go to view a video in iPhoto, I get the error message "A necessary data reference could not be resolved."  I am able to view the video clips (with sound, etc.) in Finder.  However, I want to know if there is a way to restore them in iPhoto?????
    Thanks,
    Leslie
I see that the suggested solution is to restore from back-up... is there anyway to do that without bringing in ALL of the duplicate photos I just deleted?

Try going back to QuickTime 7.4, we've seen the same problem occur with the 7.5 update. How did you make the .mov file that plays all of the files? For us, the problem shows up with reference movies (such as that .mov) made on a Mac, but works fine if it is created on Windows.

  • How reliable is Systweak Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto?

How reliable is Systweak Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto?

Here're the cleaning apps I've tested on a limited basis:
These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Photo Duplicate FInder for OS X 10.5.8?

Hi, there used to be an older version of this that worked on 10.5.8...

But all the ones I've tried turned out not to really be useful, to really do the job they need to compare every bit of every pic, with every other pic just for a start.

I know there is Adobe After Effects but I am wondering if there are any others, including from Apple.

Or does it? Because by purchasing Motion, you also get the Pro Res codecs and Animation. Will FCE be able to work with them if they're in your QT library? I think so but am not positive. I'd check with the FCE gurus in that discussion forum.
So I half answered my own question. FCE will respect the alpha channel in a PR 4444 file. But from the limited testing I was able to to, there doesn't seem to be a way to export it ( or other flavors of PR) as a PR sequence. It renders as AIC, which is fine. FWIW, it can always be exported as Pro Res via QT Conversion, but why bother?
However,  I now have to say – despite what I said in my first post – that I'm not 100% percent certain that the all the codecs will be available by buying Motion. I'm like 95% sure, the more I think about it. But I have too much NLE and graphics "stuff" on my systems to test it conclusively.

  • Complete HD Cleaning For Faster Mac?

Hi. I'm a macbook owner for an entire year today. I wish to ask here some advice and tips on how to get my macbook in the best condition i can so it can run and operate at its best.
Aside from organizing all my app's, folders, photos, videos and etc., I've managed to get back some GB's back.
I just deleted all of my mail messages that have been building up in Mail. Over 3,000 messages. Deleted them all and got back an extra GB of space.
Now, this post is not on tips of how to get GB's back (though it would be nice) but rather this post is to ask for help on getting the ram, memory up as well.
In order words, cleaning (through the screen) the mac for optimal performance.
P.S. Has Apple figured out how to get iChat Video to work well yet? :-p

How much RAM have you got? Monitor your 'page outs' in your Activity Monitor. Rebooting is the best way to reclaim your memory. There is an app called iFreeMem that will free up memory between reboots.

  • What is good greeting card software for my mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1?  I want a wide range of existing templates such as Hallmark and Printshop offer, but can't find for this version OS X.

For my Mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1, what is a good greeting card software download with lots of templates and graphics?

    Hi simon2010,
as far as I can see, I have resolved it...
Just so I didn't write over my functioning disk in the Mac mini, I took it out and put a spare one in.  (Would have saved me going back to the Apple store to get it re-imaged if it did fail.)
I created a Mountain Lion installer on an 8GB USB stick, and first installed 10.8.4 (the latest at the current time) on my MacBook Pro... it worked fine, so I knew the installer stick had no problems at all (that's one thing to rule out of the list of potential causes).
With my spare hard disk in the Mac mini, I then went to try to install 10.8.4 on it, with my 16GB non-Apple RAM in it.  It failed as usual in the way I expressed originally.
I then just swapped my 16GB RAM for the original Apple 4GB RAM (2x2GB sticks) which I put back in the machine, and I tried re-installing.  No problem whatsoever - it installed perfectly.
It's the RAM!  Even though my RAM works perfectly once installed, the Apple OS installer refuses to proceed if Apple RAM is not in.  I put my 16GB RAM back in after installing the OS and all is fine.
I'm quite surprised Apple has done this.
Have you changed the RAM?  Let me know if it's the same problem or you have some differences.
I assume it will install fine if I put the orignal HD back in, again if I have the original Apple RAM in of course.
PS.  Also to note, the point where it failed in the installer with my 16GB RAM in, with the original Apple RAM in it took an incredibly long time towards the end of the bar moving across the screen; it says "5 minutes remaining" for at least 15, maybe 20 minutes, but gets past it eventually, then does a reboot to continue its install.

  • What is good anti virus software for the mac?

What is good antivirus software for the Mac?  I think I've been hacked.

ClamXav from http://www.clamxav.com . Be cautious of other antivirus software as some, not all just some, can cause system issues.  I've used ClamXav for years with no issues with it.
By the way, you may get some responses to this question along the lines of "there are no mac virus's so you don't need antivirus software". While it's true there are no mac virus's today, in my opinion, it's like the stock market in that past performance is not a guarantee for the future.

  • Can anyone recommend a good Password manager / safe for iPhone & Mac?

Looking for a combination of an App and an Mac application that can safely encrypt all of my Passwords, memberships, bank details etc. etc.
*I've found the following, but was curious in anyone can recommend one over another or a completley different solution altogether?*
    SpalshID
    http://www.splashdata.com/splashid/iphone/
    1Password
    http://agilewebsolutions.com/onepassword/iphone
    eWallet
    http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/iphone/products_ewmac.php
    Thoughts & suggestions gladly appreciated.

1Password has a very strong reputation among Mac owners--lots of people love it.
I use and like Wallet on Mac and iPhone, but not really for the password manager aspects, although it is one:
    http://www.acrylicapps.com/wallet/
For me, one really important issue is "will it sync without me having to think about it, or do I have to consciously open it and hit sync while on the same wireless network?" Wallet uses WebDAV or MobileMe (which works for me), 1Password has a Dropbox solution, not sure about the others.
Download the trial versions for the Mac, see which one you are most comfortable with.

  • Why is duplicate cleaner for iphoto ignoring duplicates?

Why is this app not working? It worked at first.

Ignoring duplicates is better than corrupting the iPhoto library. There have been quite a few posts, were an iPhoto library was no longer working after cleaning out duplicates. The better strategy by far would be to avoid importing duplicates. At least, never try it on the only version of your iPhoto library.
