Suggestions for CAD software?

Not sure if this is the best forum to post this question, but I am looking for good CAD application for Mac...I do not need anything too in depth (I'm a beginner) and all of my drawings will be primarily basic floor-plan layouts in 2D.
I've looked at VectorWorks Fundamentals, but it seems way too intimidating. I've also seen the CADtools plug-in by HotDoors for Adobe Illustrator, but I've read mixed reviews on that.
The few basics of CAD that I do know, I learned while using DesignCAD 17 for Windows, but they do not make a version for Mac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-Brian

This any good? I use it for simple things.

  • Suggestions for CRM software?

Does anyone have a suggestion for Mac-compatible CRM software with a single-user license (or anything under 3-4 users)?
I realize this is the Leopard forum, but there really isn't a forum for non-Apple software questions.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have you looked at Marketcircle's 'DayLite' app?
I have used it for 4 years now (since V 1.0) and am still pretty happy with it. I thinks it's the best around so far.
Chrisnz -- i tried Daylite out and it seemed busy with features and quite slow... The most usable product I've found has been Highrise HQ from 37 Signals, but it is web based and has no pipeline. I am considering developing a custom app in filemaker at this point and may market it when done...

  • Suggestions for Backup Software

Hi, I am looking for backup software that is easy to use, with full backup each time and that is reasonably priced - your recommendations. Thanks - Bob61

    Hi
I am looking for the same thing I think. I have a G4 Powerbook and I want a simple backup utility that will backup everything just in case my hard drive corrupts beyond repair. I had a Dantz on my old PowerMac and just hit backup and it would backup everything on the hard drive. I don't want to have to select files, drag them or at all be concerned that I am forgetting to back up some file. I was looking at the Dantz Retrospect V4.1 Express but I don't know if that is the latest, is it good or what. Is the SuperDuper a program that will just do a complete backup of the hard drive, looking for changes each subsequent time and backing all of them up?
    Thanks for any help.
    Hi Bob61
I've been using SuperDuper for a couple of months now
and really like it. It's priced at around $29 and as
shareware you can try it out first to see if it fits
your needs. It can be set up in a number of ways to
take care of your backup needs and will also do
bootable full backups which is, I guess, what you're
looking for. You can get it here:

  • Basic LMS help, or suggestions for other software

I'm looking for the appropriate software to help me manage my lab.  I'm a bit new to any network managmenet software.  Right now it contains about 20 different switches and routers.  I have DCNM setup for my SAN and Nexus devices and we have deployed LMS as well.
I have LMS setup to aleart me of any failures or link issues etc...and its working well.
I'm trying to figure out how to get it to backup my device configs and save them out to an FTP server.  Is this something LMS can do?  If not any suggestions on what to use?  I've thought about just writing up some expect scripts to do this...but honestly I don't want to maintain it as new gear comes in quite a bit.
    Thanks!
    Chad

As Gaganjeet replied, CiscoWorks LMS can do this pretty well for Cisco devices.
If you have a mutli-vendor environment, the open source RANCID tool is very handy for this sort of thing. We use RANCID to pull configuration s of not only Cisco but also Juniper Netscreen, SRX and EX series, Citrix Netscaler, F5Big IP, Extreme switches, etc. Combine it with a viewer interface such as Trac and you have a very slick way to manage multi-vendor configurations.

  • Does anyone have a 3D connection 3d mouse running on the parallels side for CAD software

I am trying to install a 3Dconnexion Space Navigator on the windows side.  I am Parallels and Windows 7 Home Premium.  The 3D Mounse works fine on the MAc side, but I have some CAD packages that will run windows only.

Very Frustration!!!  As a teacher, I am forced to use ppt for my presentation so that I can markup the slides during a screen recording and post that on my website.  All my products are Apple and it would be much easier, to say the least, if Apple would come up with a simple markup tool to use with keynote or at least adjust keynote so that I can use my Bamboo pad during a keynote presentation.  Usually they are on the cutting edge of technology so it baffles the mind that they have not addressed this issue especially with the endless applications in education.

  • Suggestions for hardware/software to VJ with videos from iTunes

I am a digital DJ / KJ and would like to incorporate the videos from my iTunes collection into my show. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

There occurred to me that I should have mentioned that I am assuming that you are using the trackpad and keyboard of the Mac Book which I can understand your Dad really disliking. My suggestion is that you blow a few bucks and get the extra keyboard and trackball as a present for your dad and plug it into the Mac Book USB port. You might also find it handy to hook up a monitor (20" or so). It will be so much easier to read the larger screen. You might also be aware that with mouse, keyboard and display hooked up you can close the lid on the Mac Book and the display will look a bit better not having to share the video processor with the Mac Book display.
The other thing I would mention is that it might be wise to download one of the programs that make an audible click through the speaker with each keyclick, mouse click and scroll wheel turn. I use a little Preference Pane called "Keyclick" which gives you many options on how you want it to sound (I make my keyboard sound like an old fashioned typewriter - which is a sound your Dad would be quite familiar with!) With this installed, your Dad will have much more feedback and it will make typing and mousing much easier for him.

  • OpenSource Suggestions For HTTP Software

What is a good software that would allow users to make accounts and contribute poems or short stories. It would then allow guests or registered users to review it?
    Last edited by Sean-Der (2008-06-04 05:26:35)

I'd recommend to use a Wiki. I think that it would serve the task of creating/gathering poems or short stories best and there are quite a few easier ones which don't generate the overhead you have by using a full blown CMS. You might want to check http://wikimatrix.org - there you can have a look at almost all available wikis and compare them.

  • Suggestions for archival software

I realize I'm not supposed to ask about what to buy on this forum site, but I have gone everywhere else and no one can give me a good answer so I thought I'd come to the experts.
I use Aperture to archive my photos with metadata. Is there something similar for video? I am only a hobbyist with about 10 Terabytes of video clips in many camera formats. I do not use servers. I only use one MacBook Pro. I want to archive my video with metadata so I can easily search and use them in Final Cut Pro for my hobby.(I create about 10 videos a year). Is Final Cut Server overkill? If so, what else is there?
    Thanks,
    Brian

FCSvr will do what you want. I think it may be an overkill for a hobbyist.
Although it is meant to be an out-of-the-box solution, it is not. We have spent an enormous amount of time developing workflows and tuning the server for an environment of 30 edit stations and 2 x XSANs with a tape archive. For this type of environment it was essential to go down the FCSvr path.
Unlike Aperture there is a steep learning curve with server. But you can tag all of your media with metadata which may allow you to easily find it again in years to come.
It sounds like your needs are simple. FCSvr is really for multi-user environments which have complex workflows which benefit from the automation of a variety of tasks such as email notifications and transcoding to multiple formats. If I were you I would spend a bit of time familiarising yourself with the Finders 'Smart Folders' and use a sensible file-naming convention along with a simple logical file-tree to help organise your media.

  • What do you guys suggest for playing guitar thru my Macbook Air? I use guitar pro software to learn tabs but I would like to be able to play along thru the computer. thanks

I used to play my guitar thru my PC using a line 6 Guitar port, Then I could play along with Guitar Pro tabs or MP3's. Now I have the Guitar Pro software on my Mac Air and I neeed an interface (which I can get at the Appple store- guitar plug to USB) but I neeed a suggestion for what software to run as an amp simulator, maybe line 6 is the best or maybe there are others I should check out. I know there are guitar "apps" for Ipads etc but this is a Mac. BTW I did not like the guitar sounds produced by Garageband. Thanks

I'm using GJABB with Logic Express 7.2.3 and have no problems.
However, I haven't started messing around with the modulation wheel yet which is pretty important in this libary since it controls volume. The sounds are great, though. I've just raised the mod wheel on each track to get the basic arrangement done, then I'll try the mod wheel for expression.
One thing about this library is that it pretty much forces you to do single horn lines since each patch is monophonic (like the real instrument). It does produce pretty nice results that way. I haven't tried upping the polyphony as I like the results this way.

  • Nokia C3-01, suggestions for next S/W update

I am using Nokia C3-01 from 2 weeks. It is nice phone with touch and type combination. I would like to add some suggestions for next software update.
    1.   Brightness control
    2.  When writing a text message, tapping # change only alphabet from capital to lower case, but missing numeric. I have to press 3-4 times to write numeric in text. Also have no 'option' to insert numeric. If I change other language (not English, which is automatic), then I can get numeric by tapping #. Nokia, please care it for next firmware update.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can do a long press on the keys to get the numeric value instead of pressing it three to four times. This works for all Nokia since years, if they have keys
Or do a long press on the # key. This gives you the option to activate numeric input. Also a quite old feature for Nokia phones.

  • Suggesttions for iPhone SOFTWARE upgrade (v1.1 possibly?)

Suggestions for iPhone software upgrade (v1.1)
    •Better compatibility
oOne thing that I believe is very important would be better compatibility with existing iPod products. I’m going to have to find a new FM transmitter/charger and new alarm clock/radio so that my iPhone will work on them, not to mention in my sister’s and girlfriend’s cars, the stereo adapter won’t play music from the iPhone over the radio or even charge the iPhone.
    •Bluetooth Data Transfer
oIt would be nice to be able to transfer pictures, music, ring tones and such between my iPhone and computer or my iPhone and another phone via Bluetooth
    •File transfer through media message
oNot everyone can access email on their phones, it would be nice to be able to send a picture or sound file as a media message to someone.
    •Music used as ring tones
oI think everyone was expecting to somehow be able to use their songs or part of a song as a ring tone for incoming calls and messages. This would be an amazing addition to the iPhone
•Keyboard sideways on texts and notes also
oI have large hands and I’m sure many people do, so it would be easier if you could turn your phone sideways and type text messages and notes with the larger keyboard
    •Save pictures from the internet
oIt would be great if I could somehow save photos directly from my web browser on my iPhone to the iPhones memory without have to do it on my computer like a middle man or something.
    •Recording
oA voice recorder would be great, it would really help the iPhone expand into the college and business areas.
    •Flash, java, and macromedia support
oThe internet browser is great but lacks one thing, support for such things as flash, java and macromedia applications such as moving images or internet radio.
    •Copy and paste text
oThere’s been several times that I’ve wished I could just copy a text and send it to multiple people or resend it to the same person or something without having to completely retype it.
    •Deeper Customization
oEverything I about customization now days, it would be cool if you could figure out a way to have more customization such as different themes and animations
    •Photos
oSome kind of zoom and on phone picture editing would be nice, especially the zoom, but not necessary.
    •More Apps
oI know that these are in the works but more downloadable widgets and games would be cool

The device is a phone and an iPod. There may be interference issues with older iPod accessories. Apple is working on a line of "Made for iPhone" accessories. The phone isn't even 2 weeks old, unfortunately you're going to have to hold your horses on this one.
    •Bluetooth Data Transfer
oIt would be nice to be able to transfer
pictures, music, ring tones and such between my
iPhone and computer or my iPhone and another phone
    via Bluetooth
This all would be pretty slow, but I think what would be reasonable is to allow all of your:
    Contacts
    Calendars
    E-Mail
to all be synced via bluetooth OR WiFi by your .Mac Account
I think songs and videos would take forever.
    •File transfer through media message
oNot everyone can access email on their phones,
it would be nice to be able to send a picture or
sound file as a media message to someone.
I'm not confident that this will definitely be supported, but considering AT&T's reputation, I think it will be supported with a software update
    •Music used as ring tones
oI think everyone was expecting to somehow be
able to use their songs or part of a song as a ring
tone for incoming calls and messages. This would be
an amazing addition to the iPhone
It sure would be; I think we can expect this feature in the first software update. After all the WWDC keynote had a tab for "ringtones"
•Keyboard sideways on texts and notes also
oI have large hands and I’m sure many people do,
so it would be easier if you could turn your phone
sideways and type text messages and notes with the
    larger keyboard
AMEN. I've already contacted feedback support on this one. Great recommendation, especially with text messaging.
    •Save pictures from the internet
oIt would be great if I could somehow save photos
directly from my web browser on my iPhone to the
iPhones memory without have to do it on my computer
like a middle man or something.
I think we can do a little bit more with the internet. I'd be interested in:
    1. The ability to open another window in a new tab (electively)
    2. Support for a pre-set homepage that always pops up first
    •Recording
oA voice recorder would be great, it would really
help the iPhone expand into the college and business
    areas.
Another feature that was oddly omitted. It may be possible to do this with a Widget
    •Flash, java, and macromedia support
oThe internet browser is great but lacks one
thing, support for such things as flash, java and
macromedia applications such as moving images or
    internet radio.
    Adobe is working on this.
    •Copy and paste text
oThere’s been several times that I’ve wished I
could just copy a text and send it to multiple
people or resend it to the same person or something
without having to completely retype it.
It's hard to do on the iPhone, I can't imagine what kind of "tap shortcut" they would do to create this feature... it just unfortunately doesn't seem feasible
    •Deeper Customization
oEverything I about customization now days, it
would be cool if you could figure out a way to have
more customization such as different themes and
    animations
This would be nice, we do have now 700,000 identical iPhones out there right now, some personalization would be good.
    •Photos
oSome kind of zoom and on phone picture editing
would be nice, especially the zoom, but not
    necessary.
I agree that the phone, considering 4 & 8GB respectively, should have some sort of "photobooth" program
    •More Apps
oI know that these are in the works but more
downloadable widgets and games would be cool
    AMEN.
As everyone suggested, multiple emails to the feedback forums would get the features we want. I don't think apple, like other cell phone companies, will leave us with a limited first generation device. I think we can expect multiple updates and improvements much like they do with OS-X.
Great ideas, they sound very reasonable. Just be sure, like I have already in the past, to let apple know what makes a difference to you so that we can get some better features on this phone.

  • Suggestion for Apple or Third-party software company?

My first question is, where should I post the following suggestion for an improvement in FCP or for the creation of a third party software – suggested sites, blogs, etc.?
Next, my recommendation, and then my explanation of the reason why (including my personal semi-disaster):
Recommendation: That someone create a “Project Management” software for FCP (essentially a file management program that runs in the background) that organizes and tracks all of the files created during editing/post production – including the log/capture or log/transfer of the original footage, the audio files, stills, effects, etc, AND all of the files created by the program -- Live Type, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and Color (especially color). The reason for this is that FCP has an incredibly complicated filing system that results in shots, files, documents, etc., being distributed all over the place – and not all known to the filmmaker or identified in the documentation. And, that condition can lead to disaster – see below.
Explanation: I just finished my first HD project using Studio 2, including sound track pro and color. After completing what I though was the absolute final version, I burned a one-off DVD and ran it by several filmmaker and non-film maker friends. They all spotted a small sound problem with one cut, so I went back to tweak it – and discovered that ALL of the footage had gone offline. I had nothing, nada, zilch. I had saved earlier sequences (rough cut, polished cut, etc.) and all the original footage appeared, but I had taken the final version into color for some corrections and adjustments, and ALL of those shots/files were missing.
After burning what I believed to be the final cut, I had cleaned up my hard disk, moving stuff to my backup hard disk, to my RAID array, and to the trash. So, after the initial shock and complete panic, several hours of searching all of these drives, led me to the file that contained the files that contained the color corrections – in my trash, which fortunately had not been emptied. I have no idea where the files were before or how they got into the trash – obviously they were not added to the scratch disk with all of the original footage.
Part of the difficulty of finding the shots was the discovery that color creates a file folder, that holds a set of file folders, each of which holds only one shot. In order to reconnect, I had to move the parent folder to the desktop, and then move all of the shots, one at a time. into a single folder, and then point reconnect to that folder. Problem solved.
However, now I face that question of archiving the project, moving all of the files off my hard drive so I can use the space for my next film, and I am terrified that I will leave something out, and not be able to recover the project in the future. Having a project management software that organizes and coordinates all of that would be a lifesaver – and well worth the purchase price.
Anyone who would like to explore this idea, please feel free to contact me – [email protected].

You've just learned a hard lesson. Put your current energy into your education, not finding a way to wallow in ignorance.
There already is a hardware device that will do what you want. It's called a "manual". In particular, the sections that relate to "where the program stores media". Pay very close attention to those sections and set up your computer so that all the scratch and storage pointers are aimed where you want. It's very simple to have them all go to one drive.
Then, when it's time to archive the project because you are starting a new project, just purchase another hard drive for the new project. They are absurdly inexpensive these days.
Remove the drive with your project to be archived from your computer (since you now know how to keep all the files organized, they will be all together) - and plug in a new disk for the next project.
If you want a backup, use carbon copy cloner to simply duplicate the drive (or simply just copy the relevant folders- you'll know which ones) to another drive (or get a RAID 1 device)
    good luck,
    x
