Suggestions on camcorder,please

Hi All,
My beloved canon XL1 is near the end of it's lifespan (repeatedly sent in for repairs and still chewing up tapes). My boss has approved up to $5,000 for a new camcorder, preferably miniDV cassettes.
Any suggestions on a good, tough, easy to use camcorder that plays nice with FCP?
I videotape lots of workshops where the speaker is across the room and the lights are dimmed part-way through for powerpoint slides and in the schools themselves where I can be jostled by students, etc.

Let me preface this response by saying that i'm not a video
expert, and i would hope others chime in here...
but i know FLV's are good for streaming over an internet
connection, and since you're running it locally you may want to
consider plain old swf video for the ease of use factor... you
don't have to mess with the media playback component (or any such
superfluosness), you can just use 'loadMovie' and treat them like
any other movie in flash. You can detect when the video is finished
playing with some code like this (assume loadedMC holds the video
that's playing)
onEnterFrame = function()
if (loadedMC._currentframe >= loadedMC._totalframes)
// movie is done- notify

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Open your Displays system preferences. Is there an Arrangement tab and does it show two screens? If no Arrangement tab then your mac does not know it has two screens. Maybe smc and pram reset will shake it free and maybe not. Maybe there's something wrong with the connection. Thunderbolt plugs are similar to mini-displayport plugs so make sure the plug is pushed firmly in so that essentially all the metal part disappears inside the socket. By wiping both iPhone and iPod and trying syncing with another computer I've come to the conclusion that something with MobileMe sync is the problem.
I can set up both to work fine with my Mac Pro and a new Mac Book Pro as long as I don't set up MobileMe syncing. As soon as I sync with MobileMe I start having problems, particularly with Calendar.
MobileMe seems to work fine computer to computer, until the iPhone/iPod get involved, then the MobileMe copy gets messed up. Version on computer seems to stay ok.
Not sure where to go from here... other than call Apple or go to the Apple Store.

Recommendations For Camcorder Please?

I just found out that it's a great big hassle to use my Hitachi DZ-HS300A in conjunction with my iBook/imovies. I have iMovie HD 5.0(v94) which I just installed because I was so impressed at a performance art show with iMovie.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced camcorder the IS compatable with iMovies/mac?

iMovie uses video in the .dv format, so that means you'd have no compression or quality loss problems by getting a camcorder that records to miniDV tapes. Any miniDV camcorder that has a Firewire port will probably work well with iMovie. I have always used Sonys, and have had several, from the TRV10 to my current DCR-HC26. All of them work great with iMovie. I import my movies and also export them back to the camcorder DV tapes for storage. Although I have iLife 08, and use its iPhoto, iTunes and iDVD, I continue to use iMovie HD 6 for my movies because iMovie 8 does not have the option to record back to camcorder.
Because many of the new camcorders record to DVD or hard disk, the mini DV camcorders prices have come down. You can probably get something you like for under $300, possibly a lot less if it is an older model.
Essential for iMovie versions prior to 08, the camcorder must connect to your computer with a Firewire cable. Sony calls this iLink--same thing.
You don't have to install any software, just insert a miniDV tape, record whatever you want, then connect the camcorder to your computer, open iMovie and import the recorded footage!
The final choice of exactly which one to buy will depend on what other things you need for your camcorder besides capability of importing into iMovie.
For example, if you will want to capture footage from old VHS tapes to miniDV tapes using this camcorder, you will need to carefully question a salesperson, even going so far as to request that you read the manual, to determine if this camcorder can do that.
My older DCR-HC 30 can, but my newer HC-26 cannot (so I had to use my TRV 10 for this, even though its other functions are not working well) and I did not discover it until after I had purchased the camcorder and taken it home and used it. You have to look at the manual to see if it can do this. This function is important to me, and the salesman had no idea about it, telling me that another model would do this, but discovered it could not when I insisted that he look at the manual. So, be persistent with what you need and want. Sadly, many salespeople don't have accurate knowledge of iMovie.
Do you really want to record from VHS to miniDV tapes, or are you ok with using the camcorder in a pass-through manner to record directly into iMovie? Or using a converter instead of a camcorder?
Do you need more low-light capacity for recording inside with limited lighting?
Are you more comfortable with a smaller size camcorder, something easier to carry around?
You need to go to a store and put your hands on some different models. Don't be swayed by claims of super digital zooms....look for a good range for optical zoom; mine is 20x and is fine for most all of my recordings.

SUGGESTION TO ADOBE: PLEASE CREATE A PROPER FORUM FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND BILLING ISSUES

I think and many will agree, that it is about time that Adobe would create a forum just for subscription or billing issues.
There are so many people looking for help that taking this issues to a specific forum, would help in reducing the signal to noise ratio and keep a focus on specific topics. Yes, Adobe should fix these issues and I am sure they are being address but creating proper channels would speed up support, from Adobe staff and from people that, for crazy reasons, volunteer here.
I try to help, but sometimes just the Creative CLoud forum is like a raging river of people looking for help and if it was divided in some topics, it would be a great help. So:

- How-to and technical issues are still well served by the topics.

Suggestions on project please.

I am doing a project for a friend of mine. I do not have any
experience
with video in Flash but have been picking my through it
today. My question
is how you would recommend I do this.
The final flash movie will consist of an SWF, and XML file
and a whole bunch
of movies (converted to SWFs or FLVs *part of the question)
and some photos.
The SWF will start, load the XML file and start playing the
movies in order.
When one completes I want to load the next, so on and so
forth. This will
run on the machine locally and call all files locally (no
web).
So, first, I have Sorenson Squeeze and Sothink FlashVideo
Encoder and can
convert to either SWF or FLV, which is better to use here?
Also, what
component (if I use one) is suggested? I want something that
has a built in
event broadcast and event handler when the video completes so
I can load the
next video. After all of the videos play through (say 15, 1
minute movies)
the SWF will start over again with #1.

Let me preface this response by saying that i'm not a video
expert, and i would hope others chime in here...
but i know FLV's are good for streaming over an internet
connection, and since you're running it locally you may want to
consider plain old swf video for the ease of use factor... you
don't have to mess with the media playback component (or any such
superfluosness), you can just use 'loadMovie' and treat them like
any other movie in flash. You can detect when the video is finished
playing with some code like this (assume loadedMC holds the video
that's playing)
onEnterFrame = function()
if (loadedMC._currentframe >= loadedMC._totalframes)
// movie is done- notify

Big problems with Firewire iPod and camcorder - please help!

I don't know where else to turn with this problem. I think I've damaged my Firewire kit.
I have an iPod 4G 20GB and a Canon MV901 MiniDV Camcorder. I used them both over Firewire with my Pismo without difficulty, but I then tried video editing on my Windows machine with a firewire PCI card. Scrabbling around the back of my computer, I think I somehow managed to get the firewire cable to the camcorder in the socket upside down, reversing the power and data conncectors. Nothing really happened, but the camcorder stopped showing up. I tried it a good few times, then tried my iPod. By some bizarre coincidence, I think I managed to plug the iPod in the same way. Now, my iPod doesn't work on either the Windows machine or the Pismo over firewire, but does over USB2.0 on my Windows machine.
I measured the power going through the Firewire power pins as around 13.5 volts on my Pismo and the card, but the card also has an auxiliary power connector. This was disconnected when I tested it, but was connected when the iPod and camcorder were.
The thing I would like to know is whether a voltage spike of this size could fry the firewire controllers on both devices. The iPod's diagnostic mode detects that firewire is connected, but will not show up. Strangely, it still charges over firewire from either machine. Have I permanately damaged the firewire controllers?

Rob,
If you mistakenly inserted the FireWire connector twisted 180 degrees, the power lines can be directly connected to the data lines and can result in a fried PHY (connects the port to the FireWire bridge) or the FireWire bridge itself.
You can take a look at the voltage specs for FireWire ports and see that your voltage readings are well withing specs:

I am not sure where you go from here. You could try a known-good FireWire device connected to your Pismo and see if it works. If not, the data-side of the FW port may have failed. I don't know about testing the iPod or camcorder.
A possible cheap fix for the Pismo FireWire is a FireWire PC card; if running 10.x, it will just be a plug & play affair. However, unlike built-in FireWire ports, FireWire PC cards supply very little bus power. Your camcorder will work since it has it owns power supply (assuming there is no hardware failure) and but am unsure about the iPod. The iPod will not charge, of course, but it may still work in data transfers. There are a few FireWire PC cards that also have their own power supply.

Which Camcorder Please

I have narrowed down my search to two camcorders either the Canon HV20 HD which is a HDV Camera or the Samsung HMX20 High Definition Camcorder which uses an SD card. I am just stuck as to which one to choose. Any help again would be highly appreciated. I have read all the reviews but it helps to hear from people that have either used them first hand or know about this stuff. I will mainly be using iMovie. I travel to Canada for two tears in 8 weeks so was wanting to capture all my experience and then the best bits cut and burn to DVD to send back to England so family and frieds can see what I have been up to.

it does not really matter that much if you are going to shoot in HDV, which will look better in any case than DV, though it may take longer to render. For iMovie there are some recommendation I saw somewhere in the iMovie documentation. As long as you finding a camera that you can easily operate that would be my criteria. Quality-wise HDV is HDV.

Recommend camcorder please

First of all, Tom Wolsky's video from Class on Demand is the best tutorial I've ever owned.
Can anyone recommend a camcorder that will just plug in and play with FCE4?
I would like a hard disk camera or flash camera to avoid disks/tapes, but the ones I've used so far (Canon HG10) take too long to transfer files, or (Sony DCR-SR100) requires a converter.
I don't care about high def, I just want to shoot, plug, and edit without converters or extra wires.

No standard def hard drive or memory card cameras are plug and play with FCE. The only HD and card cameras that work are AVCHD cameras. So you're kind of forced to use HD, which does take a lot of space and requires a good computer.
