Suggestions to bring I-Tunes into the 21st century

You can tell if a company has loads of problems if the last option on the last menu on the phone is to speak to a person.
Apple seems to have taken that to a new extreme. I-Tunes is a good little program with a few little problems.
1) Not all songs are equal
I have some tunes that are on my I-Pod that I may not want in general circulation. I only want to hear them every once in a great while. I-Tunes seems to think that if you have it you wana hear it so you are stuck with it.
2) Not all songs are songs
Like millions of people around the world I like Harry Potter. I got the book on CD so I ripped it into I-Tunes and was able to listen to it on the go. Those of you who also bought the 17 CD set discovered that it made 305 little files on your iPod. If you wana listen to music and shuffle your songs around you could finish a wonderful song and hear a random part of the book. So I finished the book and in I-Tunes everyone sees these little check boxes next to the name. What are they for? I individually unchecked 305 little boxes and when my iPod synced up it left the files in the iPod. I called Tech support. This was an adventure that I could write a book on. It took me several phone calls and the better part of two hours to get to a real live breathing person. (I used the web sight and it told me that the serial number is not correct for the selected device though my device was not in the list so I chose the closest thing I could.)
The first “nice” Person did not let me finish my explanation and told me that Apple only supports things that I buy from them and ended the call.(hung up) The second “nice” Person listened to my whole story and told me that I needed reset my iPod and call back if I had any other problems.
I reset the iPod and watched all 305 unchecked files reappear on the device. I called back and the fourth “nice” person told me that I need to individually delete each file from the list. (This worked but if I want to hear them again I have to…)
So my question is: Why have the boxes if it is going to put them on the device anyway?
Ok I have a few suggestions to Apple Computers. iPod is a great idea. Let us choose what should be in our shuffle list.
Why can’t I put the CD’s that I bought from Barnes & Noble in the audio books section? Why the difference in formatting? This is frustrating to many of your consumers and I guarantee that you will loose them to other mp3 players. I seem to remember Henry Ford saying “They can have any color they like as long as it is black.” That statement nearly put Ford Motor Company out of business.
I don’t feel these requests are out of line and hope that Apple can fix them.
I could not find a suggestion forum so I posted here.

1) No idea what you want. If you do not want to hear a song, don't listen to it.
When I hit the shuffel button I want to hear music. I dont want to hear the twelve days of redneck christmas or chapter 30I of a book just music. The iPod views all mp3's as songs.
2) To put audio CDs into iTunes as an audiobook, it must be a file type of .m4b.
See this link for great info -> Aldo on Audiobooks
Thanks for the link but why the huge work around? Why not let click and drag over a book and POOF it is a book and not a song.
Let us choose what should be in our shuffle list
Okay, you can choose what is in your shuffle list.
Yes I can and I cant choose what is not.
Why can’t I put the CD’s that I bought from Barnes & Noble in the audio books section?
You can. See link above.
Again why make it that complicated?
Why the difference in formatting?
Because it's a different format.
Didn't you previously write, "Not all songs are songs" because you had the same format for audiobooks and songs?
Why not just let us put titles into the audiobooks catagory and the whole problem could be solved...
Apple has decided that Book audio files must coded difrently than music.
When you buy your new CD from the store it is encoded in WAV format (10 megs per minute) You convert it to MPG format (1 meg per minute average) Same quality sound.

  • Not Fit for Purpose in the 21st Century

    BT
    As someone who is on one hand fortunate enough to live in a semi rural area, and also unfortunate enough to live in a semi rural area. I have no other option open to me to use any other network (and I mean network) than BT's.
    Having to suffer copper pair over a 4km line to the exchange is one thing. However over the past decade yes 10 years nothing has been done to the line or exchange that warrants me paying full price for a service that is no different to how it was late last century.
    I therefore state that your network that "does" carry Voice as well as data is not "Fit for Purpose". I know you will continue to ignore the crys from the rural community for even ADSL2 to be implemented so we can at least try to get better data thruput.
    We are now well into the 21st century yet I have to suffer last century technology.
    1) Why should we as rural customers be subgected to higher cost. Yet still see no benefits of higher costs?
    2) Why is it difficult for you to recify problems when all voice and data is carried by BT network?
    3) That you continue to supply services that is not possible for all you customers to take advantage of even though I as a rural customer (with no other options) pay money to ?
    4) Do you believe that "POT LUCK" on your exchange when moving is an acceptable response in the century?
    You can no longer hide behind the fact you believe it is "Fit For Purpose" when the purpose of providing a connection has moved away from a simple POTS to much more than that. And this has been so for well over a decade.
    It is no longer acceptable just to say "sorry" when more and more every household and busnesses rely on a stable and fast connection speeds.
    I and many others feel more and more ripped off and left behind in your cavalier attitude to your customers in areas that you know full well have no other option thyan to use your outdated and frankly poor network.
    Please answer these questions without once saying "Sorry" as it no longer washes with me and many others.

    a_c_g_t,
    Unfortunately there does seem to be a few issues that may hinder or try to slow the progress in improving services at your exchange.
    Firstly at a footprint of approx 386 property then BT Wholesale may not yet see any commercial benefit of upgrading the exchange to the 21cn network. Also if it's a small "shed" exchange (We have some round us that are just like a garden shed) then it may not be able to house the new equipment in it's current state.
    Again your exchange has not been unbundled by other ISPs/CPs which would allow them to install their own equipment at the exchange, possible again down to commercial reasons or there isn't enough space in the exchange to install the equipment or the backhaul infrastructure isn't their or won't currently support it.
    Parts of the exchange area is "Under Evaluation" under the Connecting Devon & Somerset BDUK programme, though other parts are out of the programme.
    Also having a look the exchange area it seems to be mainly Exchange Only lines over a large-ish sparse area, meaning that FTTC may not be justified as not a big enough percentage of properties will be able to get FTTC (if lines were re-routed, a PCP cab built and a DSLAM cabinet installed and linked to that PCP). Again re-routing the lines may be less cost effective than alternative solutions (eg FTTP, though again may not be cost effective, or a wireless solutions may be a better idea).
    Also if the exchange is too small to house the new infrastructure or the backhaul network isn't up to scratch then the fibre may come from a neighbouring exchange, however at the moment there doesn't seem to be that many exchange in the area that have fibre.
    In your case I would contact your MP (and get neibours and villagers to do so to) regarding trying to get fibre or at least the 21cn network (ADSL2/2+) in your exchange area.
    I would also try to contact Connecting Devon and Somerset via https://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/contact-us/ to see if they can give you any more info as to if your area is within scope and is a NGA area, if not to see if you can arrange a community meeting with them, the village and your MP.
    In the sort term, is their any fixed/non-fixed wireless providers in the area? or satellite broadband?
    Hope that all makes sense and is slightly helpful.
    Best of luck

  • When I bring my phone into the store can they check whether it's still under the 1 year warranty or do I have to bring in the reciept?

    My lock button isn't responding when I try to lock my phone and I'm planning on bringing it into the Apple Store tomorrow... but when I go into the store do I need to bring the receipt of when I bought the phone in to the store so they can see when I purchased it ...or do they have a system where they can check whether I've had my phone for less than a year? I can't seem to find my receipt of when I bought it but I know that it's been less than a year since I've had this phone. Going in without the receipt would make my life a lot easier!

    You can check it before you go: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
    You do not need the receipt.

  • My problem is with the the strategies used by Verizon sales representatives in the stores. I believe they are the new "used car" salesmen for the 21st century.

    I am willing to accept my part in being misled by these people on two separate occasions. The first time was when we purchased two smartphones and had another phone on our bill. During the process I asked repeatedly what the monthly bill would be for all three phones and was told repeatedly that the cost would be $169.00. In reality that price did not include the extra phone and because our plan changed the cost of the extra line went to thirty-five dollars a month instead of ten dollars a month.
    My next encounter, in a different store and a different salesman, was just last month. My husband's phone stopped working and we went in to get a new phone. We pay for the insurance. The salesman said the insurance cost was fifty dollars where as the upgraded phone would only be twenty dollars. Again I repeatedly asked if there were any other charges and was told no it only cost twenty dollars. However when the bill arrived the cost for service on that phone went up thirty dollars. The upgrade from what we had isn't worth thirty dollars.
    I know I have no recourse for this and will pay for my mistake, but only as long as I have to. My contract on the phone I carry runs out in September. I will be cancelling that service then. As soon as the other contract runs out in 2016 that will be cancelled also.
    As I have said I take full responsibility for my mistakes in believing the salesman and not taking time to read the fine print. However I also think that I should be able to believe the salesman when he quotes the charges to me when I ask. I am not a happy customer and anyone who asks me about Verizon will get the full story.

    When you're ready to walk out of the door, why would they bring up a $30 upgrade fee? Is it moral? No. Is it legal? Yes.
    At this day and age, you have to watch your own back. This could've been avoided had you properly read your contract, which is updated more frequently than one would think.

  • Apple Developer Training for the 21st Century...

    Hello Forum Members,
    I would like to know, for a beginning web developer today, what applications are most important to learn? Want to be able to get up to speed and keep an eye on where the future is going. Looks like it's going to be dynamic internet/network enabled apps. What tools I will need to know to be competitive and earn a living? Just like HTLM morphed into XHTML and now XML, I'd like to be able to master the tools for creating solid web applications. What software languages would I need to know? Is java still important? What about new tools like flash, adobe air and flex? What about php, ajax, ruby, .net and others? Where should I start? Most interested in web/internet and social networking applications. Your input and advice is most welcome. Thank you for listening. Respectfully, Donnie Dixon

    if you are having disconnections when the phone rings then you need to report is to BT faults on 151 once solved the broadband disconnections should stop
    You are also on a very long line and with your higher than normal noise margin your connection speed is lower than possible

  • How do I buy a T.V. in the 21st century?

    My 15 year old rear projection tv has finally died.  So I began researching tv's and home theaters about a week ago.   My problem is this... when I Google different brands of tv's to find out about their quality issues, the reviews make it sound like no tv out there is worth buying.  When I research plasma vs. LCD/LED, again the reviews for both are just as strong, and just as contradictory.  However, my biggest dilemma is WHERE to buy my new equipment.  My two closest competitors are HH Gregg and BEST Buy.  I have read dozens of reviews about each company and their service policies, and both sound very unreliable and sometimes down right dishonest.  I am a retired teacher, who doesn't have money to throw away.  I've visited friends who have the new High-Def tv's and they look great, but I'm so distressed about the purchasing process, that I'm about ready to pay the $235.00 to get my old 52" rear projection tv repaired and stay with it!!!  Please give me any help you can!!
    P.s.  I THINK I want the 58" Panasonic Plasma and Panasonic sound system.  A good choice????
    Thanks so much to all

    I purchase a Panasonic 50" plasma a couple of years ago and I can tell you that I could not be happier. It has been WONDERFUL!
    Just my two coppers!

  • How to bring a .jpg into an open PSD file as a layer & smart object

    Note: Posted in MAC section also.
    Goal:
    Using a script - Bring a .jpg an artist chooses, into Photoshop in an existing project into its own layer, and make it a smart object.
    This way, when the artist double-clicks on the smart object in Photoshop, it opens the original .jpg
    Currently, doing this creates a new window and file - a temp file, called xxx.psb.
    Photoshop does this by default to prevent destructive editing.  However, in this case, we purposely want to open the original.
    Why?  the .jpg files are approved art by the organization.
    Here is the script I did and have working in JavaScript.  (Has to be js because it will run on MAC's)
    Currently, it creates a NEW file.  I want it, however to create the SO as a layer in the existing open file.
    In JS: (has to be js for MAC's)
    var idOpn = charIDToTypeID( "Opn " );
        var desc4 = new ActionDescriptor();
        var idnull = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
        desc4.putPath( idnull, new File( "C:\\Users\\jleahy\\Desktop\\JPG_Meeting.jpg" ) );
        var idsmartObject = stringIDToTypeID( "smartObject" );
        desc4.putBoolean( idsmartObject, true );
    executeAction( idOpn, desc4, DialogModes.NO );

    I'm half way there, but stuck at:
    Getting a file location reference when the .jpg is first brought into PS as a layer.
    Getting a script to write the location of the file into the medata for the PSD in some field
    Reading back the metadata file location for the .jpg and bringing it back into the PSD again.
    Any help would really be appreciated.
    I can make the completed script(s) available when its complete, as this has possibilities for other uses, batch process, and more.

  • Ftp root and sharepoints setting bringing users right into home dir.

    Hello, I pretty much understand the setup of ftp, but shouldn't the "ftp root and sharepoint" setting bring authenticated users into the ftp root first as the "/" directory? Then they should be able to access users since I have it shared and get into their directory if they need. But in my setup it brings them into their home directory first making it look just like the "home folders and sharepoints" setup. Any ideas?

    This came up and bit me today, too.
    If I set "Authenticated Users See:" to "Home Directory Only", it works as advertised and ftp users are dropped into their home directories.
    If I set "Authenticated Users See:" to "FTP Root and Share Points", login invariably fails with the message "530 User username: can't change directory to /Users/username."

    i would like to be able to insure that when i import a CD into i-Tunes that all tracks from that CD go into a single file for that album in their proper order regardless of whether or not there is a featured artist on one or two tracks or whatever. i recentl;y imported an All Time Low CD into i-Tunes for my daughter and because one song featured a guest artist i-Tunes placed that song in a seperate folder and so when i synced my daughters i-Pod Touch that one track is not with the rest of the tracks form the album and has to be listened to seperately. The song is from the same album and should be where it belongs with the rest of that album so she can listen to the entire album with the tracks in the proper order. I am sure that this can be done i just don't know how.

    Edit the Name of the problem song to Name [Feat. Guest]
    Change the Artist of that song to All Time Low

    What you want cannot be done. iTunes has its quirks, and the above is the kind of workaround needed to make the media display sensibly on any device. The article I pointed you to has others that you may find useful in future.

    Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats
    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
    Here's one way to install. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
    Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
    Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

    I just had to put a new hard drive in my Macbook. How do I "backload" my Ipod tunes back into Itunes on the new hard drive I had installed?

    Somebody told me that as soon as I connect the Ipod to the computer, Itunes will will wipe it clean and install what is in the Itunes library (which is nothing) and that I would need some sort of software to accomplish this. Does it matter that the tunes on the Ipod were all uploaded from cd's and not purchased?
