Sun StorEdge Enterprise Backup 7.2/NetWorker use with Laptops
I'm trying to backup Laptops that don't correspond to the normal incremental backup schedule (ie. they're not on the network when the incremental is scheduled to occur)
Is there someway I can configure either the Administrator or the Client to automatically run an incremental as soon as the Laptop is reconnected to the network?
In EBS 7.0 you can configure Backup groups and Schedules, the clients, regardless if it is a notebook, desktop or workstation, can be configured to back up at a certain time of day. You would need to set it up so that the back up group that the clients are a part of are connected to the network at the scheduled time, for example if it was a group of sales people out on the road during the day, the client systems being used would need to be returned to the office and reconnected to the network prior to the scheduled backup time.

HQ-2300D headphones - stuttering sound when used with laptop
Hi!
I didn't find any headphone forum, but the speaker forum seems close enough...
I've had the HQ-2300D Dolby Headphone headphones for a few months. They work (very!) well with my separate DVD player (a Pioneer model). Now I've bought a Dell XPS M70 laptop, and I've started having problems.
In short: when playing DVDs, the adapter (or converter) switches frequently between Dolby Digital and Stereo mode, creating a very disturbing chopped-up sound. Inbetween it works, but especially quiet scenes are *very* choppy.
Now, I've tried the same scenes with the *exact* same setup - same DVD player software, same settings, but instead connected to my home cinema system (Marantz surround receiver). That sound flawless and does not show the same behaviour.
Again, please note that the headphones work fine when connected to the digital out of my "hardware" DVD player.
So, what can I do? Is there an issue with the decoder? Too sensitive? Is the signal too weak? Please help! This is one of the reasons I wanted these headphones to begin with!
For the record: WinXP, all drivers and BIOS updated, Sigmatel STAC9200 HD Audio, tried both PowerDVD and VLC with the same effect.

Backup and Sync Network Folders
Hello - I have a simple question that I am hopeful someone can help me out with. We have a shared network folder that is approximately 750 GB in over 50,000 folders and we need to back this up to a hosted cloud drive. Does anyone have any suggestions
for the easiest way to synchronize and backup our local network data with a hosted solution? We have numerous employees accessing the data remotely, so real-time data synchronization is preferred. Please help!
Thanks!Hi,
Windows Server Backup only supports backing up to external and internal disks, optical and removable media such as DVDs, and remote shared folders.
The simplest way is to use OneDrive. OneDrive (formerly called SkyDrive) is free cloud storage that comes with your Microsoft account. It’s like an extra hard drive that’s available from any of the devices you use,
so the files you save there are always with you.
Using OneDrive on Surface
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/storage-files-and-folders/onedrive-on-surface?lc=1033
You could also use Windows Azure Online Backup. Windows Azure Online Backup is a cloud-based backup solution enabling server data to be backed up and recovered from the cloud in order to help protect against loss
and corruption.

Jun 19 13:43:12 server scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@8,600000/pci@1/scsi@5 (qus1):
Is that represent a hardware failure either on the jukebox or the SCSI controller? Or it is indeed a software corruption that can only be solved by reinstallation? But unfortunately I don't have the media on hand.

ENTERPRISE BACKUP UTILITY
=========================
Purpose
Explanation
1. Introduction
(1) Problems
a. VLDB ( Very Large Database ) :
Restore
c. Media Management Software : 많은 Media Management Vendor들이 기존의
UNIX system utilities(tar, cpio 등)을 보완하고 고성능의 Backup Device
(2) Solution
b. Backup Solution Program : Enterprise Backup Utility는 Backup Device
(3) Features
1) Dependability
2) Reliability
3) Availability
4) High Performance
d. Buffered I/O : Memory를 사용한 buffered I/O를 수행함으로써 disk와
backup device 혹은 network 간의 I/O speed mismatch를 보완해줄 수 있다.
5) Usability
recovery time을 줄일 수 있다.
g. Dry run : 실제 I/O operation을 일으키지 않고 test run을 시행할 수
있다
6) No Cost
7) Flexibility
a. Enterprise Backup Utility API : Enterprise Backup Utility와 Media
Media Management Software

3. Installation
(1) Overview
1) Backup Catalog
a. Backup 받으려는 Target Database의 Configuration 정보(physical
structures, etc.)
Database
b. Backup
e. Install 작업에 의해 Backup Catalog의 Owner (database user : obk by
default) 및 Objects ( Tables, Indexes, Sequences )를 생성한다.
2) EBU Executables
( One Installation per DBMS owner
=> One set of executables per DBMS owner )
Target Database ORA1 ORA2
Owner oracle oracle
$ORACLE_SID ORA1 ORA2
$ORACLE_HOME /u1/orahome1 /u2/orahome2
EBU Executables installed under/u1/orahome1/obackup not installed
$OBK_HOME /u1/orahome1/obackup /u1/orahome1/obackup
(2) Installation of Backup Catalog
1) Prerequisites
2) Installation
a. "Backup Catalog" Installation Option 선택
b. Catalog DB에 대한 SQL*Net Connect string(Service Name) 입력
d. Backup Catalog Tables의 Owner(obk by default) 지정
--> Database User 생성
cf. Internal Process
$ORACLE_HOME/bin/svrmgrl SYS/<password>@<Connect_String>
$OBK_HOME/install/obkcrbkcat.sh : obk user 생성
$OBK_HOME/admin/obkcat.sql : Backup Catalog Objects(Tables, etc.) 생성
(3) Installation of EBU Executables
1) Prerequisites
2) Installation
a. "Enterprise Backup Utility Executables" Installation Option 선택
b. 3 rd Party Media Management Software Vendor ( 이하 MMSV ) 선택
c. 3rd Party MMSV가 제공하는 API
( Solaris : libobk.so.1, HP : libobk.sl ) file
(directory path) 지정
ex. /opt/omni/lib
d. EBU Executables의 UNIX Group 지정
e. Backup Catalog에 대한 Connection Information 지정
<owner_name>/<password>@<connect_string>
ex. obk/manager@CATALOG_DB
* 지정된 정보는 $OBK_HOME/admin/catalog.obk 화일에 저장된다.
3) Post-Installation
a. Environment variables setting
$OBK_HOME = $ORACLE_HOME/obackup
$PATH = $OBK_HOME/bin:$PATH
$LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$OBK_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
HP machine
$SHLIB_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$SHLIB_PATH
b. $OBK_HOME/admin/catalog.obk
- Backup Catalog에 대한 Connection Information 확인
4) EBU without MMS
a. MMS의 API
b. EBU의 API
File
i) Installation
ii) 3 rd Party Media Management Software Vendor
- Others 선택
iii) API( Solaris : libobk.so.1, HP : libobk.sl ) file의 위치
(directory path) 지정
- Installation source
ex) /cdrom/obackup/lib
c. Environment Variable $BACKUP_DIR setting
(4) Install Verification
$ cat register_script
register
db_name = "ORA1"
oracle_sid = "ORA1"
oracle_home = "/u1/orahome1"
pfile = "?/dbs/[email protected]", "?/dbs/[email protected]"
$ obackup register_script
Example
a. Parallelism
b. Null Block Compression
( EBU performance feature : Parallelism, Multiplexing,
Null Block Compression, Buffered I/O )
3) Site : 삼성 반도체 IS실 ( Platform : HP, MMS : OmniBackII V2.1 )
a. Offline Backup
Total Size of Datafiles : 82 GB
Backup Device : DAT Drive 10개
Backup 방법 OS command(fbackup) EBU + MMS
Backed-up Size 82 GB 62 GB
Time 11 hours 4.5 hours
b. Online Backup
Total Size of Datafiles : 10 GB
Backup Device : Optimal Disk Drive 3개
Backup 방법 OS command + MMS EBU + MMS
Backed-up Size 10 GB 4 GB
Time 5 ~ 10 hours 1.17 hours
2) Parallel Backup Device 증가시의 Performance 비교
Total size of Datafiles : 4530 MB
Total number of Datafiles : 14개 ( striped on 4 disks )
Backup Device : Optimal Disk
Device 갯수 Parallel 값 Backed-up size (MB) Time
2 4 2042 52:56
3 6 2043 38:20
3 3 2039 35:50
4 8 2020 / 2054 37:19 / 37:37
4 4 2040 33:52
② 5개의 device(parallel=5)를 사용하면
access하는 process들간의 I/O contention에 의해performance가 감소될 수
Backup Device : DAT Drive 5개 & Parallel = 5
SEQ. EBU 사용여부 Compression여부 Datafile Size (MB) Backed-up Size (MB) Time
1 X O 4530 654 40:01
2 X X 4530 4530 41:41
3 O O 4530 / 4530 2017 / 2066 32:43 / 31:24
4 O X 4600 4552 44:15
i) SEQ. 1,2,3
- 14 Datafiles striped on 4 disks
( 400 ~ 800 MB 6개, 50 ~ 200 MB 8개 )
ii) SEQ. 4
- 6 Datafiles striped on 3 disks
( 800 ~ 1000 MB 2개, 400 ~ 600MB 4개 )
Compression
Null
3. Integration with HP OmniBack
(1) OmniBack Template file 수정
b. Template file : /etc/opt/omni/oracle/obackup.sh.temp
c. Environment Variables
export ORACLE_HOME=
export OBK_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME/obackup
export ORACLE_SID=
export OBK_DB_LIGIN=sys/<password>@<Connect_String>
export NLS_LANG=
export SHLIB_PATH=
- SHLIB_PATH는 HP machine일 경우만 setting
(2) Relink EBU Executables
a. BUG 385844
i) 7.3 Server Environment에서 EBU Executables를 relink하거나
$ cd $OBK_HOME/lib
$ make -f ins_obackup.mk ORACLE_HOME=<ORACLE_HOME> setup
ii) 7.3 Environment가 없을 경우
tcpatch:/u1/patch/HP9800/obackup에 있는 patch 적용

How to backup TO a network drive
I have a network (drive) that shows up under my shared area in a finder window.the Mac says it is a pc server. It mounts to the desktop as shared. In the network area of the Mac it says ddntnh71 and when I click that there are three separate choices and one is SharedDocs then into the docs. This folder can be acceded by the the iMac desktop pc and laptop pc both pcs are running xp and the Mac is running snow leopard. I think that the storage is shared with the desktop pc hard drive. I think??? So my question is is there a way to have timemachine backup to that network drive? It is not a shared external drive. It is just the pcs hard drive being shared but it isn't the whole hard drive it is just a section of it?? I don't fully understand that whole thing. I don't really want to use a third party tool or script. I just want the shareddocs to be removable so that timemachine will find it and I will not backup the whole thing. Just selected folders and files. Because there is only about 50gb on it. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Here's what TM will backup to:
Requirements to use Time Machine
Time Machine is only available with Leopard (10.5.x)
1. External FireWire or USB 2.0 drive
2. Time Capsule
3. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing
4. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 Server
5. SAN volume managed by Apple's Xsan file system
A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) -
I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac
The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)

I'm trying to set up new 3TB Time Capsule as a wireless network server (with remote access) and for backups for use in a small office (of two Macs). We have a late 2011 Intel MBP and a brand new MBA both running 10.8.3. We have two external 1TB hard drives that until now have been attached the MBP for storage and backing up that computer, which up until now was the only machine in use. The MBA is for a new employee and we need to share and work on the same files, both here in the office and ideally remotely too via Back to my Mac. The MBP needs constant access. The MBA only occasional. The TC has 7.6.3 firmware and we've set it up using AirPort Utility 6.2. It is currently attached to the MBP via ethernet and it has internet access via a Sagemcom router attached to TC's WAN port.
We've managed to set up a wireless network and both have wireless internet access through the TC
But there are so many issues I don't know where to begin - so I'll start with a description of what we're trying to achieve:
I planned to use the TC as the main server drive and place all the key folders and files there so that both of us can access them wirelessly and remotely. The MBP would back up to the TC and to one or two of the external hard drives - one being attached to the Mac via USB and the other being attached to the TC's USB port. We would back up the important data on the TC using SuperDuper and copy it to both external USB drives.
So , first of all, is that a sensible configuration? Should the 'server' be the one of the external hard drives attached to the TC USB port, backed up regularly to the TC using SuperDuper? But when you say 'So using USB drive does make sense if you want to use it as a file store', do you mean a USB drive plugged into the TC? I hope that I can attach an external drive to the TC so we can all access and read/write the content wirelessly via the TC network or remotely.
Yes, USB.. as it prevents the sparsebundle mixing with data files. I guess it does depend on how much data you are talking about.. you can use the TC internal disk if you are careful and setup the sparsebundle with fixed sizes once you create them..
And to be clear, I wasn't planning on backing up remotely via BTMM - only to access the shared folders on the TC data drive or USB external drive attached to it. I'm assuming that's ok?
Yes, that is fine. Sorry I got the impression you were going to do backup over internet.
What is the alternative? Having a Mac Mini that's always on? Do I need OS X Server etc.?
A mini would be great.. you don't need server edition.. but I would see how the TC goes.. since you have it and it is much lower power consumption device. It is just that its design is not really for file storage.
One big problem I have is to do with the sharing permissions. For everything on the TC or attached external drive attached to it, it says I have only custom access and every time I try to change permissions it says I don't have the permission to do that. And if I try to change the owner it says my user name is not valid.
How is the security setup on the TC?
The security is a bit tricky.. I must admit since I run windows computer in the network, that I simply turn on the guest account to read and write access. For a business setup that might not be adequate but it allows me full access to all the files.
If you setup the TC with user accounts then you are in trouble. That makes it very difficult to access, especially if one person already has the file open you may find a second user cannot login. I am not sure as I have avoided the security. IMHO it is meaningless.. since anyone with physical access to the TC can press the reset for one second and has full access.. and can add or change passwords. -

Hello! I need some help regarding a new external hard drive I got from OWC. It is a 500 gb firewire 400 + usb 2.0 7200 rpm hard drive. I am running it from firewire. The software suggests the first thing you do is make a clone of your macbooks internal hard drive, that way if it fails later you can use the external to back everything up. If I do this ...
1. do I have to make the drive "Bootable" ? I have software called Data Backup 3 by Pro soft I think. It came with my external.
2. Can I still back up other stuff like my audio recordings and record onto that drive to a seperate folder?
3. If I make a bootable copy will it try and boot from the drive everytime I turn it on or something?
My other question is... how can I use this drive with a pc? I have a pc as well and I heard that the only way it will work is to format it in ms-dos mode (fat32?)
If I write it to fat32 will it slow down my drive or make it worse? I heard that you should format external drives specifically for mac if you have a mac; so it will only work with macs...
(sorry this is going on and on; it's like a chain reaction of questions)
so If its formatted to mac drive format then can I do this with my current situation:
1. I have wireless internet, the router is on a pc downstairs
2. Can I send files over a network somehow from the pc to my mac
3. then store it on my external?
If so can someone point me in that direction with a link?
Thank you for reading, sorry for making this so long.1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

Dears,
Good day,
I need your support to guide me to configure Sun StorEdge 3510. I have 24 Disks and single controller. I is connected to one host. I want to configure it with the most biggest storage. I want to implement RAID 5 on 11 disks on the first enclosure and the same to the second enclosure with two disks spare each one in the same enclosure.
Can you guide me throw this?
Thanks a lot.Wow, it took me about 5 hours to set mine up from scratch and I'm a pretty strong storage guy. Here's an overview of what I did. Most of the info is in the 3510 documentation.
Step 1 is connectivity. Get your host to see the 3510 (FC).
Step 2 - use the cli utilities to setup the IP address on the controller (in-band).
Step 3 - ssh in, setup the RAID and presentation of the luns
Step 4 - rescan on the hosts to see the new luns -
Using network drive with time machine. IS IT POSSIBLE?
There are lots of discussion on using network drives with time machine. I have not been able to make them work. Could somebody tell me if this is possible
Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Mac running Leopard.
Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . . -

The L280 (or HP SureStore Autoloader 718) contains a DLT7000 drive. There is no reason why the generic SCSI tape driver doesn't support these drives.
If you're asking for software to control the autoloader, a similar software like Veritas NetBackup is required. Veritas supplies a replacement driver.
Now I see why your L280 doesn't work with your HP server. The L280 requires a HVD (High Voltage Differential) SCSI controller. The standard SCSI interface is SE (Single Ended) or LVD (Low Voltage Differential). Neither SE nor LVD are compatible with HVD. You won't see the device and can even damage the device and/or the controller.
Get a HVD SCSI controller (Symbios SYM22802, Part-No 375-0006) or Adaptec AHA-2944UW (not AHA-2940UW which is SE!!).
The Sun labeled HP Autoloaders (StorEdge L9, L280) use HVD SCSI while the original ones (SureStore 1/9, 718) use LVD or SE SCSI.

Do you still have a support contract for this Library ? If it's still showing the same issues after power cycling the drive I would log a call with Orcale/Sun.
Have you changed anything in your backup environment lately ?

How to configure clearcase with sun studio enterprise 8
Hi,
I am trying ot setup sun stuido enterprise 8 with the clearcase server. If any one has instruction set for that please let me know.
Thanks!Hello,
ClearCase configuration information for an older IDE versions is available as test specification on NetBeans site:
http://vcsgeneric.netbeans.org/qa/testspecs/s1s5/ProfileCC.html
In JSE8 ClearCase configuration process is very similar.
But is available through adding VCS working directory in 'Versioning Manager' (open it using 'Versioning | Versioning Manager' main menu item).
