SunMC Console on a Mac?

Hi there,
Just wondering, did anybody try running the Console on a Mac with OSX?
I'd love to be able to monitor the network with my Mac ;-)
Regards,
Emerald

Not surprising since the product literature claims to supports Linux and it appears to be written that way in all the debug and tracing output that I've reviewed. Sun provides console installation packages for Windows also.
To be thorough, I gave it a go on my Macbook Pro last night. The files were copied from a Sparc Sun MC server with a console installed as you state in your post. The execution failed. Tracing the code clearly shows the software is coded with Linux and SunOS support and calls specific shared objects. As I'm sure you're aware, Mac OS X is built on BSD. This would require rewriting the code to call the OS X libraries.
By the way, I have not verified if the Linux hack you mention works. I take your word for it.
If one must run the console on the Mac, why not install Windows (assuming a Mac with intelor Linux for that matter http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page ) on it using one of the several methods available? Then install the Windows version of Sun MC console (or copy the Sparc files to Linux). Using one of these methods, you'll have the Sun MC console executing natively on the Mac. (I can't believe I just said that, but I'm here to offer potential solutions, not personal preferences).
The above hacks may not be supported by Sun. One would be on their own to spend the effort necessary to realize a successful setup.
Now, the personal preferences...
It still makes no sense to me, to execute the console on a Mac. It is purely nice to have in my opinion, since no actual monitoring is taking place on the Mac. The Mac only serves as a device to view the monitoring console and display its data. Just install the console along with the server, login to your Mac, make sure the display permissions are set, ssh into your server, set the display back to your Mac, start the console, view to your hearts content. This takes a lot less time.

  • Opening Console on a Mac OS Leopard using Firefox or Safari

I am trying to open a Virtual Manchine's console on a Mac using Firefox or Safari. Either way I got a blank pop up screen, and nothing got loaded. I have tightvnc installed on the VM Manager. I could bring up the console on a Windows machine using IE, or on a Linux node iwth ovm-console installed. What do I need on the Mac to get it working?
    Thanks.

I'm using "Chicken of the VNC" and I connect to the consoles of running VMs by changing the "Display" value in the connect dialogue. For instance, to connect to the first VM console I use Display 0, to connect to the next running VM I use Display 1. Just put the console password you set into the connect field.
I also set the Encoding to CoRRE that connects fine.

  • Video game consoles on a Mac?

Hi there, I'm new here. I plan on gettting a new 24" iMac for 3D design, animation and music composition. I've been looking into a Mac for a long time, and all of the PCs I have used are worthless.
Also, I'd like to use my Mac for console gaming. Is there any type of Component, Composite or HDMI adapter I can use to hook up my console to the Mac so that it can be used like a TV screen?
Let's say the Xbox 360: You have the option of Component, Composite or HDMI. To connect the Component cables, do you need the Red, White and Yellow cables, just the Blue, Green, and Red, or all six connected? And if I was to hook up the HDMI, would I need the Component/Composite cables also connected or the HDMI cable alone?
Please answer any questions that you can. I look forward to joining the beautiful Mac familly soon

Maybe I am confused about what it is you are trying to do, but the video connector on an iMac is a video output for running a second display. The iMac does not have a video input in the sense of being able to use it's screen as a display for an external device. Although I have heard some people use these things to connect game consoles, but I have never personally used one:

  • SunMC console through firewall

Our firewall sits between our SunMC server/agents and our Windows PCs (SunMC console gui) I'd like to control what ports the SunMC server talks to the console on so that I don't have to have all ports open in our firewall.
Has anyone changed what ports the server uses to talk to the consoles on? It looks like they are all high ports and it would be nice if I can define a range of ports. I can see in the docs how to configure what ports the agent talks to the servers on, but wasn't able to find th same info for the server <--> console portion.
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Hi Karen,
Unless things have changed, the Java RMI communication between the Server and Console uses unbound (dynamic) ports, and there is no option to restrict them to a certain range.
Do you need all the functionality of the standard Java Console? Many organizations use the full Console to setup SunMC, then use the web interface through a browser for day-2-day viewing. The web server is part of the standard free SunMC 3.5 distribution, requires no additional license, and uses a single http/https port... which you should easily be able configure your firewall to accept.
I recommend giving the web interface a try to see if it meets your needs. If not, then you may need to look into some sort of tunneling/VPN solution. You could even use a free X Server on your Windows box (i.e. Cygwin) to run the Java Console off of your SunMC Server, but that may be a bit slow.

  • TV via Firewire & Camcorders & VideoGame Consoles on the Mac

I worked out that by connecting my MiniDV camcorder (Canon MV600i) to my set top box which is also connected to my mac via Firewire, I can get a television signal through firewire to view TV on my large external LCD screen. I'm currently using a program called Vidi to view the television stream. This works well, but I've got some questions that need asking:
    1. My TV stream is being constantly displayed in the eyepiece in my MiniDV camcorder. I can't find a way to turn this off. Should I worry about the fact that this will always be on as long as i'm watching tv? Will it wear out?
    2. Vidi is great for recording my TV shows in the DV codec. I can view the TV stream full framerate whilst I'm recording, which is brilliant. I would quite like to go a step further though, and be able to pause and rewind live television. Are there any programs that can manages what Vidi manages to do with the ability to pause live TV?
    3. Vidi can't display my TV stream on my 2nd display in full screen whilst i'm doing other work. It will only display my tv stream in a window. Is there another program that can manage this?
    4. I would love to be able to play console games on my mac monitor. Using my current connection method, games are unplayable because there is a delay (a fraction of a second). Is there any programs out there that can get rid of this delay?
    -Cheers

    1. My TV stream is being constantly displayed in the
eyepiece in my MiniDV camcorder. I can't find a way
to turn this off. Should I worry about the fact that
this will always be on as long as i'm watching tv?
    Will it wear out?
The backlight is the only thing that will wear out. If there is a brightness control, set it at minimum for longest life.
    2. Vidi is great for recording my TV shows in the DV
codec. I can view the TV stream full framerate whilst
I'm recording, which is brilliant. I would quite like
to go a step further though, and be able to pause and
rewind live television. Are there any programs that
can manages what Vidi manages to do with the ability
    to pause live TV?
Formac software would do this but I think it will only work with their video to DV converter. Elgato will also do this, but it won't handle DV streams. You could try starting the recording with Vidi, then use another application to play the DV file as it is being recorded. You could then pause and backup. Some applications may not work with an incomplete file, but there are LOTS of player applications out there to try.
    3. Vidi can't display my TV stream on my 2nd display
in full screen whilst i'm doing other work. It will
only display my tv stream in a window. Is there
another program that can manage this?
Have you checked all the menu options. I can't run my copy of Vidi to check, because I no longer use a DV device.
    4. I would love to be able to play console games on
my mac monitor. Using my current connection method,
games are unplayable because there is a delay (a
fraction of a second). Is there any programs out
there that can get rid of this delay?
The delay is in the video to DV converter. You can't fix it with software. Elgato has a couple of devices (the 250, or the Hybrid) that have an uncompressed, low latency mode for game playing.

  • SunMC Console on Windows XP not connecting

    Hello,
I have just installed SunMC Center on my PC and attempted to login into the SunMC Server but get an error of communication could not be established, the server version may be incompatible.
I am able to connect using another PC, so my SMC server is up and the processes are up and fine. The working PC is on the same segment as my new PC, so I dont know what could be the issue with this PC thats not working.
Has anyone ran into this before? If so, what is not configured?
    TIA
    LR

    Hi,
I had this problem-it is not a firewall issue (I had the problem with
both the firewall on my PC and the server down) but seems
to be a weird software conflict.I posted a message on this some
    time ago (displayed below)..
Glad to see somebody else is also having this problem and it is not
just me.Anybody have the console on Windows XP working?
So far all I have found out is that port 23 of the SMC server is being
accessed by the SMC console on the PC (which is not working) but
on the laptop install of the SMC console it is not (this information is from
    firewall logs).
Both the SMC consoles on the Laptop and the PC are installed from
the same packages. Both have the same firewall settings, both report the same java version..
Needless to say if you get it working let us know how you did it.
    Cheers,
    Ian
    ====================================
I have been trying to get the Java based console
Working from my PC and have found the following
oddments. When I run it from my PC the console fails
with a message saying Communication could not be
Established with the server. The server version may be
Incompatible If I then get my laptop, which has the same
Operatating system, same firewall setup, same virus software,
    Same java :-
    java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_03-b02, mixed mode),and the same smc software ,
remove my PC from the network and plug in my laptop in which has the
same IP address as my PC,the console software works! Does anybody have any
idea what could be preventing the console on the PC working whilst the
laptop is fine? I have a few ideas in that the console software installed on some
other pcs does not work as well so there appears to be something in common
Installed on the PCs (but not on the laptop) which is somehow stopping
the console from working. Now ,my pc is one inherited from the ghost of sys admins
Past but there is nothing as far as I can see which could cause some form of
Conflict-I am mainly focusing on Java based software..What I guess I will have to do
Is to uninstall as much software as I can and hope to eventually find the
    Culprit..

  • Cant launch SunMC windows JAVA console under Sun VirtualBox 2.0.0

    Hi,
Has anyone managed to successfully launch the Java console under Sun VirtualBox?
    I'm using SunMC 3.6.1, Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Sun VirtualBox 2.0.0
When I attempt I get the usual messages
    "Connection establish. Authenticating user"
"Login Successful. Launcing console'....but the console never displays.
    Any thoughts?
    Dom

All of this was in fact related to the IP address changing (still not sure why a modified HOSTS file didn't fix?).
As a test, I removed "use DHCP" and hard coded my network connection back to the address it was when I first installed. While I did in fact lose internet connectivity, EM and the Listener could then fire up.
Obviously this won't be my permanent solution, but I wanted to post back for others with these issues.

  • How do I get the Web Console on top, in FireFox 21 Mac?

In Firefox 21, the Web Developer Web Console seems to be fixed to the bottom with no option to change it. In previous version of FF, there was an option to put it on the top of the window. The bottom is a bad place for the Web Console, especially for Mac users. For one, the status line is right above the command prompt when something is loading or I'm moused-over a link, so I can't type in the prompt. Also annoying as a Mac user, when I bring the mouse too close to the bottom of the window, to type in the console prompt, my dock pops up. Whenever I want to use the console prompt, I have to bring the window up an inch to keep my Mac OS dock from popping up.

I prefer relative inside positioning to a separate window getting in the way. You must assume that I already know what the Web Developer console is to basic extent; it's not a tip to point out an elaborate and separate option that is already known to all who are familiar with the console. Perhaps I didn't explain my problem correctly. I think I meant Web Developer Web Console "above" not "top", but yes "top" to CSS definition of top, including whatever it is called in GUI terms "above", but not like window above or top in layers.

    Hi,
We have a pair of new Sun 4150's (with the Xeon Woodcrest CPU), and I'm playing around with the remote management features provided by the eLOM. On Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, I am able to launch the Java Remote KVM (Sun eLOM console) Java utility, but it never shows the console inside the window. In addition, in the java console, I see this stack trace:

I just got some Sun X4450s, their eLOM client didn't work under Linux (RHEL5, Mandriva 2008.1 etc.), but worked on Windows.
I then did the eLOM to ILOM upgrade, and the ILOM's Sun ILOM Remote Console works fine (just as well or better than on the X4100's, X4200s, X4500s, and X4600s we have).
If you have the ILOM Remote Console working on Mac with other servers, I'm quite sure the eLOM to ILOM upgrade will do the trick.
If you're hesitant, I can get the one Mac user in our office to confirm ...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT3924 Can I use my 27" late 2013 imac as an external display for a gaming console?

If so, how would I set it up and how much would it cost me?

No, sorry, you can't. Pre-Thunderbolt iMacs could to this, but with Thunderbolt-equpped iMacs they can only be used as a screen for other Thunderbolt-equipped computers. No company has yet to come up with a converter that works with Thunderbolt Macs. The only way you could get video from a game console into your Mac would be via a video capture device and the inherent lag in such capture would, I think, make most if not all games unplayable.

  • Exception in C++ air native extension for Mac OS X

I develop air extension for ios and mac os x.
I use the same code on ios and mac.
    For ios all good.
But on mac - have problems.
In extension I use std::vector. Code example:
    vector<Type*>* types; types = new vector<Type*>();  Type* type = new Type(); types->push_back(type);
    Application crashed by line:
    types->push_back(type);
I tried add try/catch block - but application crashed too.
I don't know what wrong. This code is work fine on ios and in console application for mac.

    Workaround found:
Need to launch adl as a line command (depends on your directory config, of course):
    /Applications/Adobe\ Flash\ Builder\ 4.6/sdks/4.6.0/bin/adl -runtime /Library/Frameworks/ -extdir /Users/vandrito/Desktop/simpleAirNativeExtension/launch/extensions -profile extendedDesktop /Users/vandrito/Documents/Projets/o3sui/simpleAirNativeExtensionTest/bin-debug/simpleAirN ativeExtensionTest-app.xml
Pay attention to the library location: it is the one of the Air 3.1 install. Did not check the same trick with Flash Builder 4.6 Air install.
Then use a fake web debugger to connect to the process (if compiled in debug mode). See here how to do (french):

  • Is it possible to output PSP video to Mac?

I know there are devices such as those made by Elgato eg http://tinyurl.com/gameconsolesonmac which allow you to connect a games console to an adapter which connects to the Mac so you can then play the consoles on the Mac's screen, however I am not aware of any which say they support the PSP.
I know there are both component and composite cables for connecting the PSP to TV's so you can play it on a bigger screen but I was wondering if there was a way to connect a PSP to my MacBook?

This is not possible with a mini.

  • Is SunMC the tool of choice?

    Hello, world!
I'd like to hear your oppinon: is SunMC the tool of choice, and if so, what modules do I need?
I'd like to have my Sun server hardware monitored, in addtion to the Solaris monitoring we already have with BMC Patrol.
The tool should tell me about
    * partial power loss/power supply failure
    * fan defects
    * over-temperature-events
    * disk failure.
    * other possible hardware failures (if there are some left to be monitored)
The marketing sheets for SunMC don't state clearly that this kind of monitoring can be done with SunMC, so I'd like to ask the community: what do you think.
    Thank You!
    Peter

    Hi Peter,
SunMC is definitely what you're looking for... but my opinion is biased because I install a lot of it for many customers :)
You should also consider SunMC->BMC integration. If you're primarily a Patrol shop then you can use SunMC as a black-box just for the Sun hardware errors, and have those errors feed to BMC so you're not stuck looking at a SunMC Console all day. Patrol will treat it as just another supplemental source of alarms, so you can use any existing procedures or notification rules you have set up.
