SuperDrive in Mac Mini seems EXTREMELY scratch-sensitive

I've come into this problem with my Mac mini's SuperDrive. The drive seems to be extremely, overly sensitive to even the smallest scratch or dust on a CD, even stuff that isn't easily visible. If I insert a CD with any imperfections at all and the drive tries to read that spot, it begins repeatedly, repeatedly seeking back and forth, spinning up and down, over and over and over, and there is no obvious way to stop it - the system itself even freezes with a spinning beach ball until whatever app is trying to read - say iTunes - gives up (which can take ten minutes or more!) And by freeze I mean freeze - the Dock magnification even stops working when I run the mouse over the dock!
This is becoming extremely frustrating as I try to import my CD's into iTunes! I do take relatively good care of my discs, but we all know that a scratch or two on a CD is inevitable - that's where error correction usually comes in. But for some reason the Mini just gags on these discs and I end up having to wait until the program stops trying to read it and errors out (like I said, which can take several minutes), and then wipe off the disc and hope it fixes it - which is most often doesn't. Ever since I force rebooted a Mac last year stuck at a beachball (similar situation - it was a bad external hard disk, and even pulling it out didn't fix it) and then was unable to even boot into singleuser mode without a kernel panic!, I've been nervous to force reboot Macs.
Advice anyone?

I have no idea how CDs or DVDs get scratched. I have maybe 600 disks between music, games and videos and have never had a problem with scratching. Easiest answer is to not play horseshoes with your disks. On the other hand, most of the disks I rent have been through ****, so someone has to be cleaning disks with sandpaper. There are a thousand products/techniques to clean or repair discs. If you have a problem with scratching try one of the clear protector shields like http://www.gamestech.com/miscellaneousinfo/micellaneous/cleanboy_cdprotector/miscellaneous.htm. I've not used them, but I've heard good things about them.

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.

Mac Mini Airport Extreme - Cannot detect any wireless networks

Last week my Mac Mini (Power PC)'s hard disk crashed. So I did a DIY replacement. I managed to re-install all the software, and installed all the latest updates.
However, for some reason, the Airport Extreme is not detecting any wireless network after the re-install.
My own wireless network router is a third-party, which has been working well for the last 2 years. My Window PC and laptop still connects to it fine.
I can see the Airport icon but it doesn't how any detected networks (and there are quite a few in my neighbourhood). I did Apple Hardware Test and it shows the Airport card to be working ok.
Any help would be wonderful!

It still may be possible that the antenna wire is not placed properly within the Mini. Here are an excerpt of the DIY instructions for installing the wireless antenna. Hope it helps...
- Make sure that the antenna cables are firmly seated in the mezzanine board.
- Pass the antenna cables through the gap at the rear of the internal frame.
- Carefully lower the internal frame down onto the motherboard. Make sure that the wires are routed to the right of the interconnect board.
- Snap the AirPort antenna onto the black plastic column next to the rear port panel.
- Tape the AirPort antenna wire to the edge of the DVD drive.

Mac Mini Airport Extreme - Cannot Detect Any Networks

The main thing that worries me is that in my case, the Mac Mini is not even seeing any networks - zero in an apartment block where there is at least 5 network on the air at any time

IMovie won't run on brand new Mac Mini (Quartz Extreme message)

I just bought a new Mac Mini. The latest 2010 Mac Mini.
I have a Samsung 23" LCD monitor.
I tried to open iMovie, and got the following message:
iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.
I'm new to the Mac world. Shouldn't Mac software run on Mac hardware?

I'm actually on my second Mac mini in a month (I returned the first one) with the same problem. I didn't have Perian installed, and certainly not Windows Media. I also have the problem that when I turn the computer on, it freezes on the Apple logo and the spinning gear stops turning. I have to shut down, then when I turn computer back on, it goes directly to the log in window. It will work fine from there. And most times, iMovie will start no problem. I hope that I don't have to return this one as well, but I might have to.

I can't use my SuperDrive on my new Mac Mini (2010/2/22).
I never tried it before but today ...
When I load a CD or DVD (both new or written), I hear the drive but it can't open the CD or DVD and reject it !!!

One tip: as getting the top case off is such a wrench, run it with the top OFF for a few days afterwards, to make sure everything has been put back OK.

Mac Mini: Quartz Extreme not supported?

I have a Mac mini (late 2008) 2.0Ghz with an Intel GMA950. MB139LL/A -- It says Quartz Extreme is not supported. Is that right? This machine is new and shipped with Leopard. Do the Mac minis really not support Quartz Extreme?

I'm not sure which "Samsung SyncMaster 940" you have, but it looks like the technology in that monitor may be about 5 years old.
My guess is that monitors that have been released more recently will have better support.
Personally, I like to buy monitors from stores with good return policies, because you never know what you might not like about a monitor until you try it. Depending on where you live, Costco can be a good place to buy monitors, as they have probably the best return policy in the business. (90 days on TVs, but no time limit on monitors -- the last time I checked.)

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Mac mini is extremely slow

I dove in an bought my first mac. A 2012 mac mini i5 with 4gb ram. To this point I've mainly been working on getting iPhoto set up with my pics. I made a copy of a certain point and lucky I did because something messed up. I fixed that, named the 8-9k faces and made some albums, etc. I wanted to make a copy of the library temporarily on the same external it resides on now, as a way to easily switch between in case something happens. It says it's going to take days to copy it to it's own directory.
My trash also seems to take forever to empty. Also, moving around in iphoto is always laggy. Tabbing to name faces was a huge chore, because it would constantly miss the first letter I typed because it was lagging so much. My library consists of about 12-13k items, but from my understanding, that is small compared to some.
I did check my pages outs which are nil, and I have plenty of ram not being used during all of this. HEEEELLP! I really want to love the Mac experience, but as a long-time windows user I'm beyond dissapointed. I have a windows 7 machine with an i5 and 8gb ram and don't have near the lag and bad experience as I've so far had with this mac.

That's normal.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Mac mini works extremely slow

I have Mac mini that works extremely slow,
it starts to load the OS but turns really slow once the login is done, it takes about 30-40 min to load.
i did few tests like permissions verify and fix, then verify and repair disk which said that Macintosh HD is OK.
What should I do next? Its sounds like hardware issue - for my opinion its the HDD but I can't understand why when I use the Restore mode the computer works fast so maybe its OS issue related? Should I reinstall OSX?

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

My Mac mini is EXTREMELY slow and occurs random OS crashes

Hi, I bought a Mac Mini in late 2011, Very recently I experienced it has become VERY slow! And the Operating System crashes. It says something like 'Your Mac Mini needs to restard' CPU usage is low, No useless background proggrams, Hardly and space taken up 4GB ram, Any ideas?

Mac mini running EXTREMELY slow

I bought the Mac Mini server just 4 months ago and it is running incredibly slow. I do not use it as a server, just bought this version for the extra disk space.
The CPU load is very low, and less than 2 GB of 8GB total memory is used by the system. But the Spotlight seacrh simply does not work (it shows the greay wheel going round and round).

A new Mac Mini seems to have a very quiet constant squeaking sound, is this normal?

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a brand new Mac Mini (i5) yesterday, and today in my very quiet room noticed that there is a very quiet squeeking sound coming from the unit (I believe it is near the front of the machine, opposite where the ports are). It is constant and changes pitch very slightly - but when there is a chirping noise from the hard-drive doing work, I think it stops then comes back straight after.
Any idea's if this is a problem and if I should be worried? It's just a bit annoying.

If you purchased the full AppleCare service support extended plan with automatic enrollment with the Mini computer, and you get a new one (or refurbished) ask that the Plan coverage be moved to the replacement Mac. Or refunded if you choose to wait & want to re-think your next product. They may be able to re-credit your method of payment, if a credit card.
I usually read through the product support discussion forums to see what the patterns of issues are, since that may be an indicator of a sort within a narrow specific build series model & sub-year version; and am watchful of graphic card problems in models where the parts may be difficult or costly to replace, if at all, later on.
At least with a Mini, you can choose several display adapters and hope to get a good match with whatever kind of display or digital TV you may wish to try & use as a screen. Some don't do all that well, & others do better.

External Superdrive for Mac mini?

Recently I got a disc stuck in the drive of my mini and for the life of me I can't get it out so...I was wondering if they make an external Superdrive that will work with the mini. I had a look at the website and found one that says its for the macbook air, would that one work?Thanks in advance.

Speaking for myself, I typically offer links to that vendor because they have Mac, and system specific, solutions which helps with a level of confidence that the problem is more likely than not to be solved. My personal experience with them as a vendor has born that out.
That said, there are other competent vendors out there too who also offer good service and stand by their products, so it's up to you who you use. The only thing that encourages me to OWC is that if you buy something they are offering as a viable upgrade or add-on to your mini and it proves otherwise, they'll resolve the problem.

Mac Mini Airport Extreme compatible with LEAP?

I'm looking into having our department buy a Mini for some Mac support we offer, and we'll have to use the wireless because nobody has a free port in their cube. Our wireless network uses LEAP authentication, and I'm not sure if the Airport Extreme support this. I checked Cisco's web site for vendor support, and Apple isn't listed there. (Or are their Airport cards manufactured by a 3rd party?)

I did a little more searching, and found that the Airport Extreme is compatible with LEAP.
