Supplementing applecare with insurance

I am wondering if anybody has found a good way to supplement AppleCare with accidental damage insurance. In this case I'm hoping to buy a MacBook Pro with Retina display.
AppleCare doesn't offer accidental damage coverage as an add-on. Other companies like SquareTrade do provide such an add on, but you have to buy the basic coverage too (i.e. limited hardware warranty). Square Trade's 3 year coverage with both basic and accidental damage coverage is $450 total.
This is actually reasonable compared with $350 for 3 years of AppleCare without accidental damage coverage, but it means you'll only have 1 year of full support through the Genius Bar. After that 1 year, yeah you're still covered by SquareTrade, but my impression is only after the fact (after you've paid Apple for the out-of-AppleCare fix, you can then submit a claim to SquareTrade and hope for the best). This seems riskier and less convenient, assuming your problem would have been covered by AppleCare.
So the ideal scenario coverage-wise would be to buy both, but that's $800, so not a great option. Has anybody else faced this dilemma? What did you decide to do?

I've never dealt with SquareTrade but I do know that whenever I buy something computer-realted on Amazon, the insurance for SquareTrade will pop up. Yes, with no AppleCare, you lose both your three-year phone support and your ability to get on-the-spot coverage.
If I were you, I'd look into a homeowner or renter rider for accidental damage. I'm soon moving out of a nursing home and into an apartment and will be getting renters insurance and I am certainly going to ask about accidental damage riders. I'd look into that first, were I in your shoes.

You don't really need a receipt.  The Apple system knows when the device was sold.
You can check here to find out the status of your iPAd

    Enter your iPad's serial number.
The only tihng to be aware of is the purchase date:
AppleCare+ must be purchased within 30 days of the date you bought your new iPad. If you did not purchase AppleCare+ with your iPad, you may purchase it at an Apple Retail Store. To buy AppleCare+ at an Apple Retail Store, a Specialist will first need to verify your iPad purchase date and confirm that your iPad has no pre-existing damage. Find an Apple Retail Store.

You should call Apple but you should get an email from Apple. I got one a few minutes ago and this is what they said about AppleCare+ :
Thank you for your recent iPhone 5 purchase at the Apple Store.
We would like to let you know that every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a $49 service fee.
We noticed you weren't given the opportunity to add AppleCare+ to your iPhone. If you would like to extend your coverage for only $99, please reply to this email by September 21st.
After that date, if you would still like to purchase AppleCare+ within the first thirty days of receiving your iPhone, you can call AppleCare at 800-MY-IPHONE or visit an Apple Retail Store.
Thank you for shopping with Apple.
    Sincerely,

  • AppleCare for MB Pro. Is AppleCare with the old part number valid?

I've got a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and went to Amazon.com to get AppleCare. The AppleCare product for this Mac has a part number of M8853LL/A, while the AppleCare in the Apple Store and other places is part number MA515LL/A. It looks like the same thing, but with different packaging and a different part number. If I buy a version of AppleCare with the old part number is it valid on a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro?
Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.
MacBook Pro Core Duo 2 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

As long as the Amazon product states that it's compatible with a MacBook Pro you'll be fine.

  • Watch are benefits to AppleCare with iPhone 4

I understand AppleCare from having it for my MacBook, but how does it apply to an iPhone?
Example question: If iPhone "goes south" during the second year of ownership (and not at the fault of the owner/user), does AppleCare provide a replacement for free?
How does Apple treat replacing a broken phone when there's no insurance or warranty involved during year number two? Is it at the full-retail or upgrade price? Is a new contract required (assuming there's no AppleCare involved)?
is AppleCare for the iPhone the key to the Genius Bar?
Here's where I'm coming from: If Apple, during year number two, will allow a broken phone to be replaced at the upgrade price (say, $199, paying $70 to cover a possible $200 loss seems downright stupid.
    Input would be appreciated. Thanks.

The AppleCare extended warranty extends the standard one year warranty by an additional year. This provides free telephone support if needed for the entire two years. Free telephone support is limited to the first 90 days after the purchase date.
If there is not an Apple Store nearby and an exchange under warranty is required, with the AppleCare extended warranty there is no charge for expedited shipping. Otherwise there would be a $29 charge for expedited shipping.
Having the AppleCare extended warranty for the iPhone is not the key to the Genius Bar. If you don't purchase the AppleCare extended warranty and there is a problem with your iPhone in year two, you can make an appointment at an Apple store and there will be no charge for the support to determine what is wrong and if it can be resolved.
After the warranty expires, if there is a problem that cannot be resolved by any other means besides the iPhone being taken apart for repair or for a part or parts to be replaced or purchasing another iPhone, Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price off the full retail sales price. For the 3G and 3GS, the cost is $199 plus tax and includes a 90 day warranty. This does not require signing a new two year contract with AT&T and does not affect your upgrade eligibility.
If you don't qualify for AT&T's fully subsidized or discounted price if this happens in year two without having the AppleCare extended warranty, you can't purchase a new iPhone at AT&T's fully subsidized or discounted price. It would cost an additional $200 at the early upgrade price which would require signing a new two year contract.

  • Help with insurance plans

    Hey everyone,
I know there were some other posts but I was a little confused.
What do you think is the best insurance for the Iphone?
I think I selected the Verizon one at check out that is $10.99 a month.  Will this be good enough?  Should I get Apple Care too?  And what exactly is the Square one/where do you get it?
    Thanks a lot

Hi. It depends all on your needs. Squaretrade is a great warranty. It covers all accident or problems with the phone for 2 years. It does NOT cover lost or stolen phones. It is also only $99 or about $4 per month and is cancellable if you do not have the phone for that long and then they will credit you back some cash. You DO NOT need Applecare if you but either one. Applecare is just extending the 1 year warranty you get for free from Apple to a 2 year. In review, the $10.99 covers everything including lost and stolen, or broken phones for as long as you are paying the $10.99. If you arent concerned about lost/stolen, then it is way cheaper to get the squaretrade warranty. You can get it here; http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/iphone-landing24?ccode=**_war_vc_090:HPother Hope this helps!

  • Help with insurance choice

When I purchased my iphone I didn't select any insurance option, right now I am trying to decide between Apple Care protection and the insurance that Verizon offers could someone please tell me the difference and what you all think is the best choice?

. If you purchase the Apple Care only, this Protection Plan provides advance troubleshooting and assistance with iPad or iPhone 4 features such as iTunes billing, MobileMe setup and use, and other potential App difficulties at no additional cost for two years. Below I have provided you with additional information regarding your concerns.
You have the option to purchase the Apple Care, as every iPad and iPhone 4 includes Apple's complimentary telephone technical support for 90 days after the purchase date and a one year limited warranty. Once the 90 days of complimentary telephone support has expired, calls to Apple technical support are $29 per incident. With the AppleCare Protection Plan, after initial registration (instructions provided in-box), complimentary technical telephone support and the limited warranty is extended to two years from the purchase date.
The AppleCare Protection Plan must be purchased within the first year of iPad or two years of iPhone 4 ownership. The AppleCare Protection Plan starts from the purchase date, not the purchase date of AppleCare Protection. The purchase date can be verified for customers by looking up their account.
The Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) insurance insures your device and covers lost, stolen, and damaged where the Apple Care does not. The TEC insurance is billed at $10.99 per month with a $199.00 deductible for the 32GB device, and $169.00 deductible for the 16GB device.
So basically, the answer is that you need to purchase BOTH......
The phone comes with a 1 year service through any apple store, do not pay extra just for phone support.. Just go to apple.com and set up an appointment at any apple store near you and go in its completely free for the first year.
Also you have until that year is up to purchase the extended 1 year Applecare Protection Plan.
In my opinion unless you are completely clumsy and know you will drop and break your phone, the TEC is unnecessary I've had every iPhone since the first one and I absolutely hate putting cases on anything I own and i've never broken one, just protect the $200 investment you made, no need to spend money on insurance than your $200 deductible iPhone are EXTREMELY easy to fix and I repair many in my community as a side job.
With a little help from eBay and www.ifixit.com anybody can repair an iphone.

  • Is it better to purchase applecare or insurance thru carrier like Sprint

In iphone 6 on order from Sprint ($50 everything $20/month lease plan).   Applecare or Sprint insurance?

I scratched the display of my 5S right after I bought it last year. I now want to sell it when my new phone arrives. I took the 5S into Apple, and they are replacing the display at no additional cost to me. I have Applecare +, and expected I would have you pay for the repair, but it is covered - by some magic.
I will purchase Applecare + for every device I buy in the future.

  • Shattered iPhone 5 screen with insurance.

I purchased the 1 time 100 dollar fee insurance when I bought the phone. The lock button started to act up and a few days later I shattered the screen and the lock button rarely works. How does it work when I go to get this fixed? Is it just a new screen or the whole phone?  ( I will be purchasing an otter box afterward)

The iPhone will be exchanged and if you are referring to AppleCare plus, there will be a $50 deductible.

  • Couldn't order AppleCare with iPhone 5

I wanted to order AppleCare when I ordered my iPhone 5, but the Apple Store app never gave me the chance (it took me straight to checkout).
I've tried to modify the order but haven't found a way without canceling it, and don't want to do that at this point.
    Any ideas?
    TIA, Bob

Bob, definitely be patient. They seem swamped right now. I could get through to 1-800-MYAPPLE, but would always get disconnected once I got past the automaton.
Here is the full email text since it outlines all the options if you were not offered AppleCare at time of order. They clearly indicate you can call AppleCare at 1-800-MY-IPHONE (which is a different number from 1-800-MYAPPLE) within the first 30 days of ordering. I would try that number as an option although it may actually connect to the same number behind the scenes. I didn't actually try because my problem was solved.
Thank you for your recent iPhone 5 purchase at the Apple Store.

  • Purchasing AppleCare+ with a carrier preorder?

I preordered my iPhone 4S from Verizon (the AppleStore site wasn't loading yet), but they did not have AppleCare  as an option. Can purchase it from Apple before I activate the phone? The Apple Store site says no, but the terms of AppleCare (section 11(x)) say I can.

That is ridiculous!  Wow.  I called Verizon's 24 hour help number last night and finally got through around 3:40 EDT.  The guy I spoke with had to ask me what the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+ is, and told me that Verizon hasn't given him any information on AppleCare+ or how to order it.  He couldn't help me out at all.  Verizon's support Twitter account said yesterday that "AppleCare" was going to be available under the iPhone 4s accessories step of the pre-order process.  It most definitely was not there, though, just original AppleCare.  There is still no AppleCare+ on their website.  I tweeted them this morning to ask how this issue could be resolved.  They just responded to me: "I have no info on AppleCare through pre-orders. I have raised this up, and we'll address this issue once iPhone is shipped."  Clearly I'm not about to get anywhere with Verizon soon, let alone before I have the iPhone in my hands.
I'm also not about to cancel my pre-order.  The phone I currently have is completely dead and I haven't done anything about it because I didn't want to screw up my eligibility to pre-order the 4s.  I ordered an iPhone 4s last night without the AppleCare+ through Verizon, after trying for almost two hours, until almost 5:00 in the morning here, to find a way to order it with AppleCare+ because I didn't want to be without a phone for an extra who knows how long if I didn't order right away.  I think it is Apple's responsibility to provide this to people who tried to purchase it, not Verizon's (or AT&Ts' or Sprint's) since their website was on and off not working and when it was working, there was no way to purchase AppleCare+.  I still don't see how people can order it through Apple's website...I have yet to see an 'Add to cart' button to click.
If only I could get through to Apple to complain...

  • Supplemental logging with Oracle 10gR2 Streams and Data Guard

    Hello,
I have a environment with Oracle DB 10gR2 and Physical Standby with Data Guard DR Conf. Right now, this environment is going to be extended to a replication schema using 2-way Oracle Streams Replication (for replication to the central office from this branch office, other branchs will be added soon). The primary DB will be replicated to the other primary DB (in the remote central office).
So, there is my question: It's completly necesary to specify Supplemental Logging on the sources databases (primaries) for setting 2-way Streams Replication?, and, if it's completly necesary, then, do I can set Supplemental Logging on primaries without affect theirs physical standbys, or do I need to do something special?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, it's repeated. 'cus browser connection problem.
