SVGA to S-video Cable?

Using the provided Apple adapter, I want to run my video signal out of my MacBook Pro and into the s-video input on the front of my Sony receiver and displayed via a ceiling mounted Sony projector. Can this be done without an appreciable loss of signal?
Thanks!
GB

You can use the Apple DVI-to-video adapter ($19), which will output to both component video (RCA-type jack) and S-video. There will be "loss" of resolution, but the limitation is not due to the adapter per se, but to the video format - S-video is an NTSC signal, which is limited to a resolution of 720x480 (compared to your MBP display at 1440x900). The DVI-to-VGA adapter that came with your MBP carries higher resolution signal, so if your projector is capable of higher res (e.g. 1024x768, aka XGA) then you should use that to connect to your projector.
Just FYI, "VGA" has two meanings - the VGA signal is the same resolution as NTSC (720x480), but now VGA is commonly used to refer to the type of plug, so a "VGA cable" can carry higher than VGA resolution (e.g. WXGA at 1366x768), it just has the VGA-style plugs.
Hope this helps...

  • Less expensive component video cable?

I'm looking for a special component video cable that works with the Epson Powerlite 77c video projector.
    The cable looks like this:
    http://www.superwarehouse.com/EpsonProjector_Component_VideoCable/ELPKC19/p/41751
The cable is 1 x 15-pin Mini D-Sub at the projector end and 3 x RCA (R/G/B) Component Video at the source end.
I'm wondering if there is comparable non-Epson cable that would be substantially cheaper. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Thanks!
    Sounds like

    or this

might do the trick. Though I'm not sure why they make a distinction between SVGA and VGA in the cable. I didn't know the cable knew the difference.

  • DVI to Video Adapter and S-Video Cable = Flipping TV Screen

    Hello!
I attached my DVI & S-Video Cable to my television. Everything was fine, except when choosing different display resolutions, the TV screen would start flipping.
    THEN:
    • I removed the DVI to Video Adapter from the computer while it was still plugged into the TV.
Now, no matter what I have tried, I get a TV screen that flips.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Jeff

S-Video is the better of the two interfaces. Neither is very good when compared with a computer screen, which will have much higher resolution. I doubt you will notice much difference between S-Video and RCA Video but if you have the choice you might as well go S-Video.

  • Mini DVI-to-Video Cable

    Hi,
I've been looking to get a cable to connect my macbook to a normal widescreen CRT TV. I found the Apple Mini DVI to Video cable on the website, but it doesn't list the Macbook as one of the compatible systems.
Can someone let me know - preferably with a link - which cable I should go for

This should be what you are looking for on the UK site.

Don't forget to get a 3.5mm stereo male to rca male cable for your audio. If you have a different audio input on your TV get appropriate one. The MacBook has a 3.5mm stereo plug on it for audio out.

How do I connect an iPhone 5S or 6 with audio video cables? Our van only has these connections. Apple did have a cable that worked with the 4/4S, but it does not work with an adapter on the 5S. I want audio only.

  • What s-video cable for a DVI to S-Video adapter

    Hi,
I have an old MiniG4 lying around, which I thought I'd make into a media centre.
I bought the Apple DVI to Video Adapter (<http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A>) which is specifically for a Mac Mini and I thought that I had an s-video cable too, but clearly I have the wrong one.
The cable I have, has a single plug at one end and the red/white/yellow plugs at the other end. The single plug is a headphone-jack style, but with 3 yellow connector 'stripes' instead of the usual 2 black ones, but this plug doesn't fit in the DVI Adapter's yellow socket. It's too wide.
Can anyone tell me what cable I need to work with the DVI Adapter? Should it be 2 plugs to 3, or 1 plug to 3? (I'm in Europe, if that changes anything)
(Why don't Apple tell you what you need on the product page at the Apple store???)

    Thanks for the replies.
I found the correct cables ... really dumb that Apple sell adapters but doesn't tell you what is required for them to work.
Anyway, it works really well. I was surprised at how good the output is. Just like the original DVD. The only place I can see any artefacts is on a totally black screen. Should it be of interest to anyone else reading, I used Handbrake on preset AppleTV but with FFMPEG instead of H624 (which took incredibly long to encode) and choosing to maintain aspect ratio and 100% quality.
I'm also using the iPhone to control via Apple's 'Remote' iPhone app and I bought 'Rowmote' as well, which gives more control.
The G4 Mini is the 'stealth' version, the last one they made with a slightly faster processor and a more capable video card. It's adequately powerful for running the movies and acting a media hub.
All in all, I'm quite happy.

  • Conecting Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable with my mac book pro

Hi. I just bought Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable to connect my mac book pro to my HD TV. I connected the cables and put my TV on HDMI input. On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!

    Hi y3p3v3,
On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!
You've got it connected, and you're viewing it already! Connect it up again, and try dragging a window either to the left, or right, off your built-in screen. You'll find that it appears on your TV!
What you're doing is running the computer in "extended desktop" mode. That means that your TV screen is available to put things on, but won't show your menu bar, dock, or icons. Those remain on the "primary screen" which remains your MBP's built-in display.
When the TV is plugged in, go to System Preferences --> Displays
The main System Preferences window will remain on your MBP's screen, but a second one should appear on the TV as well. If you go to the one on your MBP's screen, and click the "Arrangement" tab, you'll see two screens shown in the diagram. One will have a menubar. That's your MBPs screen. You can drag the menubar to the other screen to change the primary screen to the TV.
OR, you can just click "Mirror Displays" and your TV will show the exact same picture as your MBP display. This option is the simplest and will accomplish what you want, I think.
If you have any other questions, or if you need any clarification, feel free to ask!

  • Please confirm use of mini DVI-Video (s-video) cable with Macbook

    Hi,
I have tried to use the Mini DVI-> Video cable with my new Macbook in order to be able to connect to my TV.
Unfortunately it doesnt work, I do get the resolution change when I plug in the cable but nothing on the TV. I went back to the local Apple center and they tested the cable on a Powerbook G4, it worked flawlessly. Then they tried a monitor on my Macbook's DVI port, it also worked.
But when trying the mini DVI to Video cable on the Macbook, no luck!
Can anybody please confirm they have used this cable and connected successfully to a TV?? Using either the s-video option or composite?
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Best Regards,
    Thomas
    G5 DP2.0, Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I can confirm that the s-video connection to a standard CRT TV using the mini-DVI video adapter does NOT work with my MacBook.
The display is detected, and when mirroring is enabled, the resolution on the MacBook display is adjusted, but the TV doesn't display the MacBook signal. Instead, I get a black screen or some random flickers of color. Following the instructions in the help files, I've adjusted the resolution down to its lowest level with no success.
My guess is that this is related to the fact that the integrated graphics relies on system RAM, and I am running my machine with the stock 512 Mb RAM it shipped with (2 GB are on their way).
On the off chance it would help, I even tried closing the display, in hopes that the memory savings from turning off the MacBook display would enable the TV signal, but no luck.
Thomas, how much RAM do you have in your MacBook?
Those of you who have been successful using external displays, are any of you using the stock 512 Mb RAM?

  • Lost:  Composite to-S-video cable.

I have never had a use for the composite to-S-video cable that was supposedly shipped with my PowerBook 17 inch, circa May 2003 Now I want to do a PowerPoint presentation and need something to connect my laptop to a Dell digital projector. Right now, I have no information on which projector this might be.
Does anyone think I can find such or something similar locally, say at Fry's Electronics as I do not have time to order. Would they have a composite video cable which I understand I would need if I can't find or locate a composite to-S-video cable. Thanks.

Your system should have two output options: a DVI Output port and the S-Video port. Assuming you have neither of the adapters that came with the system, if you're close to an Apple store, go pick up the DVI to VGA adapter. Or Fry's also carries Apple adapters, as well as some third party adapters. On my work notebook, I plug projectors into the VGA port all the time.

  • No S-Video and composite video cable adapters from Apple?

    Hello.
Is it me or does Apple's http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/cables/cable_choo ser not carry any video cable adapters that go to S-Video and composite inputs (an old Panasonic projector TV from Y2K) from MacBook Pros (2008 and 2012 models)? This is just for watching fullscreen videos.
    Thank you in advance.

Might want to canvass Mom & Pop computer stores in the area, that usually don't have such a furious inventory turnover rate as the big chains, and maybe you'll find what you need. Or look in eBay, Amazon, etc. Note that you don't NEED an Apple-labeled adapter, just one that will plug in whatever ports you have left and gives the required output.
OK and thanks. I tried to find on big retailer stores online like Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, Office Max, Radio Shack, etc. but had no luck. Or maybe I am not searching correctly (DVI S-Video and DVI composite keywords as two examples)? I did find Apple's on Amazon.com based on the model number from someone on comp.sys.mac.system newsgroup: http://www.amazon.com/APPLE-M9267G-DVI-Video-Adapter/dp/B0000ACOBL/ ...

  • There's video problems with my Zen Vision:M already (M video cable related) Please help

    Some background...
System:Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
Player: Brand new Creative Zen Vision: M with no firmware updates.
My Zen Vision:M has a problem (besides the scratch and fingerprint attracting top surface): It won't play videos on a TV screen when the M Video Cable (also from Creative) is linked to it anymore. It's only been a few hours...
I had the cable already, and got the player today. I let the player charge to /4th of a battery while I was setting up all the software. I ran the software programs just to take a peek, only changing the name of my player (to my name). I used Winamp 5.3 to put a music track on the player to test it. After that, I hooked it up to the VCR in my room through the white and yellow A/V plugs in front. It worked just fine. It to the tv a little large, but I was okay with it.
Later on today, the new AC charger I ordered came in the mail (Player came through UPS, charger through USPS). I looked at my old charger (Creative Zen Touch) and realized it would work with the plug-in part of the sync unit at the bottom. I tested it for a minute and it did. I still took it out and tried the new one. This is where, I think, something happened. I had to press the sides to get the thing in, and it was hard to come out. Everything still fit just right, and nothing seemed to be wrong. I used my old charger as I added more of my music library. Now it was on to videos. I had to convert the first two test vids (they were .wmv), but they played on my player fine. I put a bigger .wmv file onto the player to see if it had to convert it, and it did. It still played on the player. When I go to hook it to the TV with the A/V cord again, there was nothing but a black screen with the occasional diagonal scan line. The sound is still there.
Besides quirks with the navigational system, the player is still great for music and video. Still, I needed no video capability, and one of the things that made the ZVM a buy for me was watching my vids on the big screen. I'd return this for a second try, but I want to know if this is a recurring issue with you guys and if there's something I can do to fix it before a return. Did I mess with a setting? Should I get new firmware? Did I do wrong using my old charger? If any of you have an answer, or need more info on my situation, please let me know.
And BTW, does anyone know of some better software for organizing files on the ZVM? I used Winamp for my Zen Touch and the music on my ZVM, but videos are another ballpark. I can't transfer a video from one folder to another folder (assuming both folders are on the ZVM). Not to mention the music I transferred using Winamp isn't even showing up in Windows Media Player. I think I need a different program altogether.

I have got a new Creative Zen Vision W and getting the same problem....when i attach to the tv then i am able to hear the audio content and the video does not show. Are we missing something ? or is it a problem with the player. Also the software provided with the Zen converts small .vob files to .wmv when ever the size is large it gives an error 'conversion?unsucessful'.Any body facing similar problems please help.

  • After updating ipad 2 to IOS 5.1 composite video cable says "this accessory is not supported by iPad"

Now that I have updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s to 5.1, when I connect my composite video cable to watch netflix or other video on my TV I get the message that the accessory is not supported.  The audio goes through fine, but the video only plays on the device.  Anyone else run into this?  Ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem. Even worst, I use my iPod touch at the gym cause our bikes and threadmills have iPod connection (and screen of course) so I used watch TV shows from my iPad. Last week, thought the treadmill connector on the machine was broken... from what I see, it's the TV out on the iPad that is not working anymore.
Once home, I used my composite cable, well just like you got a message : "not supported" tried on iPad and Ipod Touch.
THANKS APPLE WITH YOUR STUPID UPDATES!!!!
But now seems your Video cables won't be selling much if not working hey?
And reboot has no effect, don't waste your time.

  • How to Extend S-Video Cable to Watch DVDs on TV?

My TV's built-in DVD player died, so I want to use my iMac as a DVD player but watch DVDs on the TV. The video cable (S-video?) as you know is about 6 inches long. The TV is approx. 15 feet from the iMac. Is there some sort of a cable extender to attach to the "TV" end of the video cable? Thanks.

Here's one possible option (I've never used them but they do do up to 100ft cables).
Remember that S-Video doesn't carry any audio so you'll need to wire that seperately; ideally you'll get something like this.
