Swapping DVD drive from 667MHz Titanium PB to my 12" PB

The DVD drive on my 12" 1GHz Powerbook has died. When I put in a CD or DVD, I get what a lot of other people have been describing. The disk goes in, I hear one set of clicks, and the disk gets ejected. I have a dead 667 MHz Titanium Powerbook. Does anybody know if the DVD drive from that PB will work in my 12" PB? The Titanium DVD drive is read only (will read and write CDs but only read DVDs), but I'm really only interested in burning and reading CDs and watching DVDs.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Richard.
Powerbook G4 12-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Alex-
I've looked into the Pioneer K05 and K06, but I've read that they don't seem to be "native" and have problems. Is it your experience that I should just be able to replace my Matshita UJ-816 with the K05 or K06 and just use it? Or is there something else I need to do as well?
Thanks.
Richard.

Can I share my CD/DVD drive from my laptop running OS 10.4.11 with my MacPro running Snow Leopard?

Hi, no idea if this works in 10.4.x, but...

Might have a couple of other ideas if it doesn't.
Hmmmm, looks like 10.5.2 might be required for that, let me know...

You can probably create another keyboard shortcut to eject a disk, if you wish.

  • Can I use my DVD Drive from my pc to load Tiger on my Mac

Can I use my DVD Drive From my pc (compaq R4000)to load Tiger onto my Mac G3 Blue & White?

    The short answer is no
long answer is maybe but if you manage to get a DVD drive from a Compaq into a G3 then install Tiger it will be so slow (Tiger on a G3 iMac) it'll bring tears to your eyes.
What are talking about this sloww nonsense! I've been using Tiger since it came out on my Summer 01' 'Snow' iMac 500Mhz and it works quite nicely! Sure garageband is sssllooww but who needs it. Everything elese is good! Just bump up the ram and your good to go as long as the processor is 450Mhz or higher! Although after looking at your post, you were using OS 8.6 so I assume its a 233Mhz. So ya that would be slow...BUT I've found 10.2 Jaguar to work well with my Bondi 233Mhz with 192MB of Ram...

  • Swap Hard Drive from 15" MBP to 13" MBP

I have decided my two month old 15" MacBook Pro is just too big to lug around with me all the time and am going to replace it with a new 13" MacBook Pro. Can I just swap the drive from my 15 to my 13 and expect everything to work? It is a larger 7200 RPM 500 GB HD so I want to use it in my new machine and don't want to have to play musical chairs with the data if I can avoid it.
    Thanks!

No - you are better off migrating the data. Migration Assistant will do the job. OS X installs are specific to the machine they are installed on, and the hardware configuration of that machine.

  • Putting a DVD drive from a G5 into my  G$

I have a DVD Burner drive from an old G5. I want to put it in my old 450 mhz dual processor G4 which only has a cd drive – no burner. WIll this work? Is there any software out there to burn DVD's on OS9.1?

I believe it will work. When using OS 9.2, I use Toast Titanium 5.2 to burn CDs. I don't have a DVD burner. The Toast specs say it can be used to burn DVDs.

  • MBA (Mountain lion 10.8.2) and sharing CD/DVD drive from Win 7 PC

I have a MacBookAir. I want to share CD drive from a Win7 pc. I installed the cd share exe on the win box
(DVD or CD Sharing Update 1.0 for Windows.). the program for mac(DVD or CD Sharing Setup Update for Mac v1.0) is refusing to install and tells me a latest version already exists on the MBA. I have latest 10.8.2.
When I go to system preferences>> Sharing , it doesnt show CD/DVD option there for me to check.
I can go to finder >> go>> connect to a server, I can see folders and content of cd on the remote machine.
but that does not let the air see that as a cd drive if I have to install some software....
    what to do?
    please help ....
    thanks in advance,

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can I swap hard drive from my Macbook (10.5.8) into Macbook Pro (10.6)?

I have a white Macbook from 2007 (model A1181, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, OSX 10.5.8 installed) which I upgraded with a 500GB hard drive. I now have Macbook Pro (model A1278, 2.53GHz, 10.6 fresh install from disc, 250GB hdd).
I would like to swap the 500GB drive from the Macbook into the MBP so I can transfer over all my settings and apps. Will that upgrade work? If not, what's the best method to perform this upgrade so I can restore my system on the MBP? I use TimeMachine and SuperDuper to backup my Macbook if that matters. Thank for any input!

No, once you put the older MacBook drive in, if it even fits, you can't transfer to the new one because it's not physically in the MacBookPro anymore.
And the MacBookPro may not be able to read a 10.5 boot disk if it shipped with 10.6.
They are not backwards compatible when trying to boot from an older machines drive that probably doesn't have the correct drivers to run on a MacPro.
    First,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk in case you have some directory corruption.
Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job. Better, run DiskWarrior if you have it.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then use Target Disk Mode and Migration Assistant to move settings and data.
Make sure all your apps. are 10.6 compatible. I would trash any plug ins also.
I followed this routine and had no troubles.

  • Swapping hard drive from one MacBook to another

I'll spare you the gory details, but my daughter broke the screen on her 2.0 Core Duo MacBook, one of the original ones. It has a 250 gb hard drive that I put in to replace the small stock drive. We are replacing this MacBook with a new one, a 2.0 Core 2 Duo. What I would like to do is simply swap out the hard drive from the old and out it in the new one. The old one does have Leopard. Is there any reason this would not work? Thanks.
(Also, is there any market anywhere for a MacBook that works fine except for the broken screen?)

You may need to run Leopard install again on the drive when it's in the new MacBook. There will be some drivers and stuff that won't be on there that the new one needs. You could probably just do an upgrade to do this.
(Also, is there any market anywhere for a MacBook that works fine except for the broken screen?)
You could consider keeping it and hooking it to an external monitor and use it that way as a spare computer.
You could also look online at some of the MacBook repir shops and see if they buy broken MacBooks for parts.

  • Using a Shared DVD drive from a Windows PC

    Hey,
I want to pick up a Mac mini but I just want to spend about 600 on the regular one without the DVD burner. I will be using this mostly to learn Mac for my certifications.
Anyways, can the Mac find my shared DVD drive located on my Windows Vista Desktop machine and burn to it from iDVD and other programs? Or is that a Macbook Air only feature? Am I stuck with the regular drive or has the almighty Apple blessed their holier than thou of an OS with a basic feature as drive sharing?

i believe its only a feature on the air...... unless u can download somewhere that remote disc sharing ****

  • Can I swap hard drives from a 13.3" MBP and a 15" MBP?

    Hello,
I have a 13.3" MacBook Pro with a 500Gb HD in it. Tomorrow I'm upgrading to a 15" MacBook Pro. Can I just swap the HD's round? If I can't do that, whats the best way of moving the data?
    Thanks
    Mark

If the drives both have the same version of OS on them (ie, both are 10.6.2 for example) then I doubt you will have problems (though in some cases where different "builds" of the same OS version occur, difficulties can arise) . If the drive from the old computer has a newer version of the OS installed than the new computer (quite common to find if you update your OS software whenever new releases come out) then it will probably work without problems.
If the drive you are trying to install has an older version of the OS on it, though, it probably will not work at all, and, if it does, you are likely to have other problems along the way.
Other quirks can occur when doing this, however. You may find that you run into networking issues, for example, because after the swap, depending on how you have gone about dealing with account info etc., both your old and new Macs may have the same "network identity" for some purposes.
With two current model computers like yours simply using Migration assistant, with the computers connected either by a firewire cable or an ethernet cable, should probably work fine as an alternative.
    Cheers

  • How to flash bios on Sun Fire X2100  (without cd/dvd drive ) from solaris.

Hi I have the following problem. I need to udpdate bios in my sun fire x2100 (not the m2 version). Installed system on it is the latest solaris 10. I have also one laptop with sxce b107. I need to update bios to support zfs root/mirror.
Both devices are int the one subnet.
I download supplement cd from sun, but I was pretty amazed that there is available only remote update from rhel (32bit) or boot from cd/dvd drive.
    Any help is welcome.
    Lubos Kocman

    1. If an OS is installed:
    - log in as you described
    - shutdown the server with `init 0`
    - this should bring you to the OK prompt
    - Insert the bootable system software CDROM into the CDROM drive
    - On the OK prompt, type `boot cdrom`
    2. If no OS is installed:
    - connect to the serial management port with your PC (Hyperterminal)
-> NOTE: you will need a DB-25 Adapter (Part No. 530-2889)
connect this adapter to the serial port of your PC, then connect the adapter
with an RJ45 cable to the serial management port of the server
-> Serial Port Settings in Hyper Terminal:
    Duplex: Full
    Bit Rate: 9600
    Parity: None
    Databits: 8
    Stopbit: 1
    Flow Control: Xon/Xoff
    VT100 Emulation (if applicable): ON
    - change to the OK prompt by typing `break`
-> if this does not work, try `reset -x`
    - make sure your OS Installation CDROM is in the drive
    - at the OK prompt, type `boot cdrom`

  • Unable to remove DVD drive from Pavillion Slimline S3015 UK - Help Required

We have a Pavillion Slimline PC model 3015 UK which we are about to upgrade the RAM Memory, inorder to access the RAM we need to remove the DVD drive.
OK having followed the support instruction here
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01049980&tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=u...
At present  the Drive is not moving forward even though the two cables are out and applying presure to the lever on the RH as per the instructions to release the DVD unit.
The model we have does not allow access to the LH side screws, if there is one holding the unit you cannot see it as there is another metal casing in the way.
YOur comments & advice most welcomed, we need to use the PC on a daily basis.
Whats the best route forward ?

To remove the dvd drive, the expansion slot below the dvd does have a brown lever you push on and then the expansion slot slides to the back of the computer and comes out.  And like the other comment says you will see the obvious screw underneath the dvd.  Once this is removed then DVD slides forward....
