How do I find my original photo files in Iphoto?

Well...Thanks Apple for censoring and deleting my previous discussion which DID contain useful and constructive information for many people who are trying to track down their photos in Iphoto. I didn't realize how strongly censored this forum is. I guess I shouldn't rant about it, or this will also get deleted.
Once again, if anyone is trying to find their original picture files, open a Finder window > Places / your user name / Pictures / Iphoto Library ( Left click and select "Show Package Contents" / Originals.
Also: as an Apple Forum user tip: Don't be too critical of the Apple products or your post will be deleted.

Don't use iPhoto.
iPhoto is a Photo Manager. It's designed to work like, say the AddressBook on your computer. Think of it this way:
Add all your addresses to the Addressbook. Edit them, group and organise them as you will.
If you need to access an address then simply use the tools built-in to every app in your Mac to do so - like the email or mail merge features and so on.
*some where on the HD is all that information, but you wouldn't try and find that file, would you? You'd access the data via the Address Book application or the various hooks written into the Applications that integrate with it.
Now, repeat swapping out the word 'address' for the word 'Photos'
Add all your Photos to the iPhoto. Edit them, group and organise them as you will.
If you need to access an Photo then simply use the tools built-in to every app in your Mac to do so - like the Media browser. These are detailed here:

What you are trying to teach the kids is a file based system. iPhoto is a data based system. If you don't want to teach the kids how to use a data based system then don't use iPhoto.

How do I put photos in the iPhoto Library onto my external hard drive?

I used an old iMac for years and I would go into the hard drive in the Originals folder and drag each folder onto the external hard drive. That way I could easily find the different shooting sessions. Now with my new Mac I find an iPhoto Library folder but none of the pictures are there. In asking other questions over the last 6 weeks I've learned that if you click certain keys on the keyboard you can bring up the folders to view. Am I supposed to do this or is it asking for trouble? What is the best way to get my individual folders in iPhoto onto my external hard drive? Thanks so much.

Deleting photo's in iPhoto didn't really delete them from hard drive

I do a lot of photography, mostly sports/action etc. I just noticed that when I delete a photo in iPhoto, it is removed from my view, but it does not go into the trash can. I can use Finder on the pic's left in the same event folder and then peek around and still see the photo's I thought I had deleted. When I tell iPhoto to delete a photo, I want it to delete both copies (original and modified) - I'm afraid that I may have literally 1000's of photo's left over, sucking up hard drive space that I thought were deleted.

For the sake of completeness:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

How to export photo out of iPhoto environment?

I want to upload some of the pictures in an album in the internet and I do not get the proper information for me to do it. It seems that Apple has closed it to keep it inside their environment in order to force people to print it with them, or not to be able to manage it out of this application what makes from this a Nazi app since it keeps you out of being able to do what you want with your own photos. Apple keeps users hostages of it. It is far from being at least a little fair. Come on Apple!

Instructions say to select a photo then click the add to button in the toolbar. I cannot locate that button.

Problem using photo's in iPhoto to upload to net

I just got this macbook. Brand new to Mac. I just put some pictures from my iphone into the iphoto library. So, theoretically they're on my mac and ready to be uploaded to the net. These are property pics and I'm putting them in a listing. I've never had an issue withthe pc. So, I go to my listing page and try to upload but for some reason when I go to my pictures file to upload, I can't get access to the iphoto library. I read a few posts in here and it appears I have to make a copy of the pictures before I can use them for anything...
can someone tell me why apple would make something so ridiculous?? why would I want to make a copy of something I just copied onto my computer so I can use it again. Why add a step to the process? I've found the same with PDF attachments in emails. I'll open the attachment and then I can't save it until I make a copy of it from the preview area...why the heck add the step?
So, I'm sure there are ways around this...at least I hope there are. Please let me know how I can simply connect my phone, or camera, to my computer, save the pics, and then upload them to where ever I want without the need to duplicate everything.

Apple didn't make anything so ridiculous. You don't have to copy the photos to use them. With the pdfs and email, jusy drag them from the email to the desktop or where ever you want them. There is no "preview area", what you're been asked to do is save the file from the server to your machine. Same as Windows, a little different workflow that's all.
As a tip: before you decide that Apple are making things ridiculous, remember you've got a learning curve ahead of you. Just like when I sit at a Windows machine, it might help to bear in mind that if it seems overly complex or thick, then you've probably got something to learn. That works for me.

Delete photos in both iPhoto and Finder at the same time??

Is there any way I can delete photos in iPhoto AND at the same time delete them permanently in the finder?
We all take too many pictures with out digital cameras and we can't say for sure which once are good with just looking at the camera... so we have to import ALL of them to iPhoto. When we do that, they also get saved in the Finder. When you delete the bad photos in iPhoto you still sit on the bad photos in Finder...
Does anyone know an easy way to delete BOTH at the same time?

I'm not sure I understand your set up:
And I wanted to let you know that under Preferences the box "copy items to the iPhoto Library" is checked.
So, all your pics are copied into the iPhoto Library. BUT you also have copies in the Pictures Folder. Why do you have two copies? They don't count as a back up because they aren't on a different volume, all they are doing is wasting disk space.
If you let iPhoto manage the files then you have no need to access them in the Finder. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.

Looking to transfer photos from several iphoto 6 sources to new iphoto

Hey all,
So I just got a new macbook pro. i want to transfer all my previous photos to my new iphoto. heres the thing i have prob 3-4000 pics that are saved in 4 seperate places (all by simply copying/ backing up the Iphoto Library folder)
I have:
1 iphoto library folder on my old powerbook
1 on my G5
1 on a firewire drive
1 on another firewire drive.
these are all iphoto 6 libraries
i dont care about transferring over the library files or saving the albums because only 1 of these libraries actually has some orginized albums and i'm going to be going thru and reorganizing all once i get them in the same library.
Can i simply just drag all the "originals" folders to the new iphoto's originals folder?
or do i have to drag the contents (photos/vids) of these originals folders into iphoto?
again i just want the pics in my new iphoto. i dont care about albums and i never did any retouching or editing in iphoto

Photos visible in iPhoto application but not accessible for upload

Any help anyone can provide with this is greatly appreciated. I took pictures of a friends wedding and have been trying to order a photobook as a gift. I decided to try to use iPhoto to make the book. I don't use iPhoto very often and at the start of this, my iMac was running on the Tiger OS and an old version of iPhoto (I think 5 or 6). After completing the first version of my photobook, I tried to place an order, but got a message that my version of iPhoto wasn't supported any longer and I'd have to upgrade.
I called the Apple store and ordered the Mac Box Set to upgrade my operating system to Snow Leopard and my iLife to version 11. The woman at the Apple store had me check my system info., available space, etc. and she assured me that my system should be able to handle the upgrade. I went ahead with the upgrade, loading the new operating system first and then iLife. The install seemed to go just fine, I never got any error messages and all the applications appear to function properly. So, I used the new version of iPhoto to create a photobook. I then placed the order the first time. On my end the process went smoothly and the upload completed without interruption. However, I got an e-mail message 4 days later saying my order couldn't be completed because files did not upload properly. So, I tried to place the order again, following the instructions to make sure that all my other applications were closed, etc. Once again the process seemed to be completed without any issues. However, now a week later, I once again got the error message that my order could not be completed because files did not upload properly.
So, I decided to try to place an order through a different vendor. Now I have discovered that all my recent photos (despite appearing in the iPhoto) are not accessible when I try to access them for upload to the vendor's site. The icon for iPhoto library is grayed out and there is no longer an option to access my photo rolls through finder. So, now I am unable to place the order for the photobook.
Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Uploading photo album from iphoto library

New at Mac. I have 2 thousands photos on my Mac. I have created many albums for these on Iphoto. When I want to upload these albums , i do not have access to my iphoto library . Instead i get the library where the photos have been downloaded by the hundred and some are not related. Why when uploading i cannot have access to my iphoto library with my albums.. This is very frustrating ..thanks again for the answers.

You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

i can't tell if my question is the same, or slightly different, but this thread seems closest to my question so i will ask it here so as to not duplicate:
on my iphone 6 i have icloud photos beta on. in iphoto on my computer, i have photostream on, but auto import off. so, the only thing i have for photo stream photos is "icloud" under the shared heading.
when i delete a photo from the icloud section in photo, it does not delete it from the photos beta app in beta.icloud.com. if i had auto import turned on, i would think this would be normal functioning with respect to the actual events that get imported, but since i have it turned off and am working with photostream itself i would have thought it would delete from the photos app on the website when i delete it from the stream in iphoto.
similarly, deleting a photo from the photos app on the icloud website does not delete it from the iphoto photostream if i had already opened iphoto and thus the album had already been updated (though if i delete the photo from the beta website before opening iphoto, it won't show up in iphoto since it was deleted from photostream before iphoto updated from photostream).
so, as it stands - my iphoto only sort of syncs with photostream. is everyone experiencing this? i'll be honest - i still don't get the new icloud drive and photos, so maybe the issue i am having is exactly what the photos app for osx is intended to correct when it comes out next year. or am i just wrong in how i think the syncing is supposed to function?

Finding photos OUTSIDE of iPhoto 8

With the older versions of IPhoto you could find photos stored in the library easily (without opening the application), and then open them in Photoshop, etc or email them. With this newer version - I cannot figure out how to do this - it is either the entire library you have to open, then edit in PhotoShop, then email it or whatever. This is VERY frustrating. Likewise I just edited some photos and I cannot find them in the iPhoto library, even though in the save menu I see what folder they are in, but this folder does not exist in the IPhoto library that I can see. Am I missing something?

Yes.
Quick background: With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
It has never been the correct way to access files via the Finder. Period. This is true of all the previous versions of iPhoto. Any and every time you surf the Library with the Finder, Bridge, Photoshop, whatever, you risk damaging the Library.
For using Photoshop with iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. *This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.*
If you use a 'Save As...' command in Photoshop you are creating a new File. Save the file to the desktop and then import it. iPhoto does not know about files saved into the iPhoto Library unles they are imported. If you're doing the 'Save As' to preserve the original version of the file, that's not necessary as iPhoto does that for you.
Other than that:

Viewing photos uploaded to iPhoto

I have uploaded photos to an iPhoto event today. They cannot be seen by Pixelmator or by WordPress. They are definitely in my iLibrary, and on my harddrive. Neither softwares can see the event, although it is visible in the recent list, but no photos are visible. I can not access these photos.

Pixelmator should be set as an external editor:
