Illustrator CS3, Mac.
I'm unable to delete a spot color swatch from the swatch palette. Selecting the swatch dims the trash symbol at the bottom of the palette and the Delete option is not available in the drop menu. As far as I can tell no element within the file uses the color. What am I missing?

I didn't post that you were using Symbols or Graphic styles. I posted that one of them may use the swatch.
What that means is even if you didn't use any.. if there are Symbols and Graphic Styles in those Panels (which there are by default).. they may be using the color. It doesn't make any difference if you've used them in your art.
Did you use the action which I suggested?

Can I use a photo as the color for my text swatches

I want to create a set of letters (Lake in Wood Camping Resort) that use a photo of the campground as their swatch, instead of a solid color. Can I do this? If yes, how? I am a novice at INDESIGN so need all the help I can get.
My thought would be to place text over the photo, using a large open font, that only shows stroke, no color in the swatch. So you could "see thru the Letters into the campground) then, delete the photo but still have the font contain the colors of the photo. Am I dreaming or is this possible? I have fiddled around with it but to no avail. Thanks for any advice, recommendations, Cathy

1. Place image
2. Draw white box to cover image
3. Place text on top
4. Set opacity of text (effects panel) to 0. Text dissapears
5. Group with white box from step 2
6. With group selected choose Knock Out Group (effects panel)
This preserves live text.

Can not find pantone+ swatches in InDesign CS6, such as 2239c?

How do I find the pantone+ swatches in InDesign CS6, such as 2239c? It is not visible in the swatches panel? Can anyone else see this swatch in Indesign Cs6 or Illustrator Cs6?

From the Swatches panel Flyout menu, choose New swatch.
In the new swatch definition dialog, under Type choose Spot, and under Mode choose Pantone + Solid Coated.
There are some legacy colors that are not included inthe Pantone + series. You can add these to both ID and Illustrator by following the directions in Pantone Plus color libraries (Thanks, Vikrant ).
2239 isn't in my old swatchbooks as a spot color or the legacy books for the program, either. Are you sure that's a vaild number? Perhaps youpi really mean 223-9, a light blue-gray process color? If that's the case, you'd need to specify Process instead of Spot, and choose the appropriate book fromthe mode dropdown. The 223 series seems not be included in the + books, but it is inthe legacy books if you add them according to the instuctions in the link above.

How to create a Gradientcolor from two existing swatches

Hello all,
I have 2 colors in the swatches palette.has anyone how to create a new gradient color from this to swatches.
So far I can get my to colors from the palette and extract their color:
aSwatch1 = sAISwatchList->GetSwatchByName( colList, colorName1 );
aSwatch2 = sAISwatchList->GetSwatchByName( colList, colorName1 );
iErr = sAISwatchList->GetAIColor( aSwatch1, &colorP1);

but what do now. to get the new color from colorP1 and colorP2. I need a simple linear gradient.
Any hints?

No, not from my view (and needs ).
The color for the gradient has a type of AIGradientStyleMap. this struct contains the angle für the linear gradient etc. This color is added to the swatchpalette so it shoud keep the value.
If you replace the CreateGradientSwatch function in SnpGradien.cpp of the SnippetRunner with the following code a 2nd swatch with an different angle is added to the swatchpalette when creating a new linear gradient is created (name seems not what it should but 2 swatches are created. Applying this 2 swatches to a rectangle also the angle is changed as it should be.
So from my point of view Illustrator doesn't take the angle when a new color/swatch is created in the swatch panel. Why the angle is saved by creating a style is another question and difficult to answer without looking inside the source of Illustrator

Swatch Option Dialog Box Not Displaying Properly

Whenever I open a Swatch Options Dialog box the Pantone preset colors overlay on the slider bars so that I cannot access the slider bars.

I tried trashing the com.adobe.indesign.plist file to resolve the issue but that didn't help.
Any ideas on how to resolve this would be appreciated.

I found the answer in another post by nread so I am posting his solution here as well.
I went into my Configure plug-ins, disabled the swatches plugin and its dependancies (created a new plugins set config), then quit and restarted InDesign. After that, I re-enabled all the plugins I disabled (by reloading the default configuration) and restarted InDesign again. Now my swatches work perfectly!
This worked for me as well.

How to create a swatch library from multiple png files?

I am having a difficult time trying to create a new swatch libray of patterns from multiple png files. The way I am doing this is very slow and repetitive and seems silly for a tool as advanced as the latest CC suite including illustrator.
What it seems I must do is open all the png files in Illustrator, creating multiple workspaces, drag one png file into the swatch window, then save that window as a library, close the existing window to reveal the next png file, open the user library I just created, drag the next image into the currently active swatch window, then drag the previous swatch/s from the user library into the current active swatch window, resave and replace the user defined swatch library (now with two images in there)fromthe updated current active swatch panel/window, close the existing workspace to reveal the next image file, and then repeat the process again, slowly building the user defined swatch library up by adding one image at a time and then adding back into the Swatch panel the previously built up library of swatches again one at at time. (you can select all from the existing user defined library and drag over into swatch panel, but this creates at least one duplicate on each cycle for as soon as you click on the first swatch in the library, it adds itto the current swatch panel and then when you select all swatches to drag across it includes the first swatch and copies it again)
This is a very slow process to build up a swatch library. For some reason you cannot drag swatches directly into the user defined library you have created, only into the active swatch window for each workspace. I searched the web and forums for answers but could find none. There must be an easier way, just can't find it.
Ideally, the best option would be a swatch window option that allows the import directly from a list of selected files in the finder.
Any ideas out there?

Thank you for responding, however I am not exactly clear on what you mean by "libraries are plain AI files". For example, I cannot find a file with the same name as my user defined library name that I have created. I can find the preinstalled swatches listed under Adobe Application Support... Library... Swatches, but a user defined folder is not present and the library sets that I have already created are not visible. I have tried searcing my Mac for a (name).ase file and still no luck (at least for the name I was looking for). I can open the user defined library from the Swatch library icon on the bottom left of the Swatch panel, but when I open this I cannot drag and drop add new swatches directly to this library. As stated above, I have to add each pattern, one at at time to the normal swatch panel, then add back the previous ones I have saved from the user defined library to the swatch panel and then save threm all as an updated user defined library. Thus by repeating this process, it builds up the user defined library one at a time.
I am using Illustrator CC if this makes a difference.

How can I convert an image into a color swatch set

I have some experience with Photoshop and some with Elements 11 but I'm still getting used to it. Gimp, which is what I'm used to can do it so I'm sure Element should be able to. I have some really pretty Irises I'd like to onvert to a swatch.

Is there a way to create a swatch that defaults to overprint?

Our workflow at work is set up with 3 custom spot colors that I used to draw fold lines or label cover panels on customer's proofs. As long as I remember to set those guides to overprint in indesign they will not print when I send the files through our workflow.
However, sometimes I forget to check the overprint box, so i'm wondering if there is a way to set these swatches up just like the black swatch so they default to overprint?

You can't do this in the Swatches panel however you can create a way to aid your workflow using object styles.
Create a new object style for each type of line/fill you will use - Fold, Cut, Spot UV - and then just attach that object style to your line/fill. In the object style box, you can select to set the stroke or fill to overprint. You can then copy these object styles throughout your documents or just set up a template with these already in place.
You can then double check it worked by selecting your line/fill and opening up the Attributes panel to see if Overprint is selected.

this is reg, getting swatches available inside the document pallette into [arrays], instead of typing the document swatches as i did.
(this is my ongoing UI script related to previous thread, answered by jump_over and peter kahrel).
Im storing manually the swatches names in [arrays] and calling it from dropdown list, instead of automatically getting available swatches inside the document...

How to disable the option of "Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100%" in Indesign by Java Scripting

Hi Guys,
We have a requirement where we have to disable the option of "Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100%" in Indesign. This option is available when we go to Indesign ---> Preferences----> Appearance of Black.
Also, if a user opens a file, in which the swatch is already enabled, then it should prompt him for disabling.
I am aware of doing it through AppleScripting, however I would be needing it on both mac as well as Windows Workstations and hence as such I require a JavaScript here.
I am novice to JavaScripting and any help would be highly appreciated.

However, currently this action gets applied to only active documents.
Can we keep the status disabled after we close the indesign document. We need to have it disabled in the preferences panel.

I am new to Indesign Scripting by Apple Script. As a beginner, I am trying to do some basic scripting in Indesign by Apple Script.
My aim is to disable the option of "Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100%" in Indesign. This option is available when we go to Indesign ---> Preferences----> Appearance of Black.
Also, if a user opens a file, in which the swatch is already enabled, then it should prompt him for disabling.
I can make a display dialog in AppleScript. But, I am bit unsure as how can I go ahead and disable this option. I tried this below script:

AI CS3, mac, Pantone swatch greyed out, I can't change it

Hi all, normally when you double click on a pantone on the swatch panel, you can modify this pantone to process and the color mode as well, but in rare occasions you can't.. that options are grayed out..!
Any body knows why this happen and hot to fix it?

Color Swatch Palette is Stuck

I am a designer working for a printer. We have a customer who is trying to add a new color to her CS4 document. She is selecting New Color Swatch - Spot - Pantone Solid Coated but is getting Process Coated DS colors -- the palette is stuck. Any suggestions? When she sent the document to me I didn't have any problems with the swatch palette.

When InDesign is behaving erratically, deleting preferences (also referred to as “trashing preferences” or “removing preferences”) often solves the problem.
Do one of the following:
(Windows) Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
(Mac OS) While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
