Switching on external audio ejects external hard drives

Hi folks. Weird problem here.
I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) with a regular 3.5mm line-out jack going from the audio out port to an external speaker/subwoofer system.
Whenever my mac is on and I have forgotten to power up the external speakers, once I flick the switch on the system all the external Hard Drives attached to my mac eject (750GB WD USB2, 4TB Seagate USB3, 5TB Seagate USB3).
Normally they reappear after a minute or so but sometimes they don't and I have to restart in order to have them show up.
I am beginning to think that it is related to an issue I have had ongoing for a number of months (since upgrading to Yosemite actually) 27" iMac randomly reboots whereby I would have messages appearing throughout the day saying "external Disks have not been ejected properly", and then having 2 HD's terminally fail on me.
I have seen other threads talking about glitches with their audio when using audio in/out devices but I have seen nothing about hard- drives being ejected.
I suspect that the Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack) is susceptible to power surges, such as a connected device being switched on and this somehow causes the ejection.
Anyone else have similar problems or know of a possible cause?

Firewire chain for external audio interface and hard drive

I use Logic Studio 8 on a Macbook Pro with a Presonus Firebox, an external Lacie Firewire hard drive for audio recording, and another Lacie Firewire drive for backups.
Is there a recommended chain order when chaining my Firewire devices together? I read somewhere on a ProTools forum that they recommend putting their Firewire audio interface Mbox2Pro at the end of the chain.
So right now I have Macbook Pro -> Backup Drive -> Audio Drive -> Presonus Firebox. I once had it in a different order with the audio drive first, but I found it was reading more slowly from/to the audio drive when it was in that order. I have no idea technologically why this would be the case.

I just found and joined this great forum. Following up on Ray's comments about his MacBook set-up, I have a similar MacBook 2ghz, 4mb ram, 9400 chipset, and am exploring getting into Logic Pro 8 and was wondering if my MacBook was underpowered, and whether I needed to step up right away to a MacBook Pro because of my lack of PCI slots for recording audio to an external eSATA drive.
I was encouraged to hear that the USB 2.0 connection for Ray's external WD 7200 hard drive has worked and improved things and his audio isn't getting choked and he is not getting the clicks and other problems.
I'm wondering if Ray or anyone else has any other tips on using a MacBook for Logic and for optimizing one's setup. And Ray, did you notice a point at which the clicks started? .. in terms of number of tracks? Or were they present from the outset? I'm wondering how many tracks you are running now on your system.
I might mention that I don't have an audio interface yet but was impressed with what I've read about the Apogee Duet. Any comments on interfaces and the Duet?
By the way, I'm just recording one instrument/one track at a time and perhaps occasionally two instruments at a time. And right now, my main purpose for getting into Logic is for editing and mixdown of pre-existing tracks that have already been created on a standalone hard-disc based DAW. If all goes well and if I like the whole Logic experience I'd expect to get a more powerful MacBook Pro or even a Mac Pro or whatever higher end iMac exists in the future.
To summarize, all I'm intending to do initially with the MacBook is:
1) transfer individual digital tracks from a standalone hard disc-based DAW into Logic for mixdown and mastering.
2) Record a few extra new tracks one at a time - probably not using any instrument plug-ins but relying on external synth/sampler/guitar sound sources ..in each song (maybe 3-4 tracks at most), and
3) apply standard effects like reverb and EQ and panning to the mix down and master songs, each song containing a of approx 25-40 tracks.
My basic question is, can a MacBook 2Ghz with firewire 400, 4gb memory and USB2.0 to external hard drive handle this or is it underpowered? Thanks.

External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I have a External 2.0 usb hard drive that I use as a backup for my pictures, documents, videos etc. Currently I am using Windows XP but I want to get an Intel Based iMac. Can I just plug the hard drive in to transfer files or is it not that simple?

I have a similar question but I am earlier in the process.
I want to transfer my files (iTunes, photos, etc) from my Windows XP Dell to my new iMac. I have an 80GB Iomega USB external hard drive that I can borrow from work. Should I format it in one manner (Fat32 or NTFS) before I start the whole process? And then is it just as simple as putting the files on the hard drive, ejecting it, and then plugging the USB into the iMac?
I guess my other question would be should I bother doing this, or just use an ethernet cable and connect the two computers and do it that way, if that is even possible!? I am just trying to get my ducks in a row before I make the big "switch"

External USB 2.0 hard drive reconnects on its own after power-down

I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive which I'm trying to power off (after unmounting all partitions, of course) using:
$ udisksctl power-off --block-device /dev/sdb
When I do this, the drive spins back up after a few seconds. Only when I issue the same command again does the drive stay powered off.
I'm running:
linux 3.13.7-1
udisks2 2.1.3-1
This is what I see in the journal log when I:
- Plug in the drive's USB cable
- Issue the power-off command
- After the drive spins up again, issue the command again

What is interesting is that on first connect, the drive is using ehci-pci driver, then after the first try powering it off, the drive appears to reconnect using the ohci-pci driver. Not just that, it appears to 'jump' from one USB bus to another. How is this even possible?

Just to be sure, I rebooted my system, shut down lightdm from another VT, made sure that really nothing is using the drive, no partitions are mounted, no services that could try to use the drive (except udisks2.service, could this one be the problem? But how am I supposed to use the udisksctl command when the service isn't running?).
Tried the same command again. same result: I needed to run it twice in a row for it to 'take'.
What I find even more fascinating: how can a USB device jump from one USB bus to another like that? I've honestly never seen anything like this before :-)

Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display?

Hello,
Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display and back up a MacBook Air to the external hard drive using Time Machine?
I intend to connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt cable.
I would also like to connect my printer via USB 2.0 to the Thunderbolt Display. Will this also work?
Effectively using the Thunderbolt Display as a USB hub or docking station.

I would like to know if this configuration is possible and Time Machine will run correctly.

External USB 2.0 Hard drive not showing up

I have a 120gb Western Digital external 2.0 USB hard drive.
When I plug the drive in (have tried both speeds of USB) nothing shows up.
The drive powers up and spins.
The first time I plugged it into the computer it ran perfectly. 5 minutes later after I restarted it would not show up.
I can confirm the drive works fine as it transferred data with no issue when it did show up.
I have tried the disk utility function and it just hangs and never resolves.
I have tried to look at it via the system profiler under the usb and again it just hangs.
This drive is used back and forth between a PC, my G4 Power book, and now this G5. For about 2 months it was working fine between the G4 and the PC. Just the other day it stopped working on the G4, and then when I tried it on the G5 I just got, as mentioned, it showed up the first time then nothing.
Any help would be fantastic.
Please note I'm not the most proficient in getting under the hood on these machines, so please talk slowly. lol

The USB disk icon is also lost. I had just finished re-formating the drive to the MAC format, backup up mail and all of my pictures - and 2 users of mail files. Shutdown the system to install Leopard from Tiger. My IMAC is 20 days old ... not a lot of files.
After Leopard was fully installed and updated with all fix's, I re-connected the drive, but it never appeared. A waited for a while .. no change, so I pulled the USB cable. Leopard give me a trap like error and said to old down the power button until powered off. When the system came back up .. its still not showing. I tried the Disk Util .. it does not see it also

If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.

Eject Firewire Hard Drive, Won't Stop Running

I upgraded my Early 2009 Mac Pro OS to 10.9 today, but I found a problem about my external firewire hard drive.
If I eject firewire hard drive under 10.8, the hard drive will stop running/rotating. Then I unplug the firewire cable. After I upgrade to 10.9 OS, the firewire hard drive will not stop running/rotating after I eject it. I cannot see any external hard drive icon on desktop, but I can hear the hard drive running sound.
I'm not sure if it's safe to unplug cable under running condition after succeful eject. How's many people have the same problem with me?

I have a dozen OWC cases and they have all continued to work (but can't say about 10.9) and they are getting "dated."
Apple though often changes drivers, IOKIt and how external drives are treated, 10.5.0 thru 10.5.2 the rules changed and changed back and forth. Some drives had to be off during startup. Users have had trouble with 10.6 as well with their drives, often USB and/or FW from major vendors (WD etc) not working.
Do either of you get the "drive was not ejected properly" message on the next time you do connect and power it back on or after a restart?
One of the reasons I prefer waiting for the .2 or later releases.

I've tried it on my friends mac and it shows up straight away. Any ideas?
It's a Samsung USB 3.0 1tb. All my other External Hard drives work fine. Just this one wont show up on my mac anymore.

Superficially its very strange, however Ive seen same countless times, minor power diff. between Macs on a dying SATA card. Thats why its called "haunted (external) hard drive syndrome", .. 2 symptoms are illogical diagnostically
The 50 cent part inside most external HD is a nightmare.
If you had a new external enclosure, diagnosing same would take less than 2 mins.

I was thinking about purchasing two of these hard drives. I want to use one at home an the other at work so i can bring work files home. I have a mac at work and a pc at home and wanted to know if I would just be able to plug it into both and have it work or can I only use it on the mac once it is formatted for the mac?

I forgot to include this in my other reply - OSX only has the "read only" limitation for NTFS. Most internal hard drives of PCs are formatted with this and can only be read by OSX. Most external hard drives come formatted as FAT32, which, as I said above, OSX provides read/write support for.

External WD 1 TD hard drive not detected on MBP 13.3" OS X 10.9.1

Hi all,
I have a WD 1 TB hard drive that is not detected by my MBP 13.3" which has OS X 10.9.1
The check box for external disks is flagged in Finder>preferences
I have also looked to see if the hard drive is deteced in disk utilities but it is not.
I have a lot of data stored in the external drive which I cannot afford loose.
Any help on this is highlt appreciated!!

Cheap external dvd+rw and hard drives

I have recently purchsed the most basic model of the macbook, with a 60gb HD and the combo drive, cos i got a good deal on the price for that model only, however, the HD doesnt have enough space for much other than all my music files and i need an external drive, but am having trouble finding a cheap one that is mac compliant. All seem to be PC compatible, same with the dvd rewriters.
can these cheaper models be used with Macbooks? can i download mac os x drivers somewhere? or do i have to pay over the odds for a mac compliant equivalent??
also, any recomendations on cheap dvd+rw and hard drives? and where can i buy them (bearing in mind i am based in the UK)?
now i have bombarded you with questions, i hope what i have said is clear, and apologise or being such a mac novice!

All seem to be PC compatible, same with the dvd rewriters.
Strongly recommend you look for firewire external devices, not USB. Your Mac will see them, and you will be able to initialise the hard drive using Disk Utility. As dvd burner, the same applies, except that you may want to consider third party software for burning.

I purchased a seagate 3 tb hard drive and planned on connecting it to my airport via usb. I setup the drive and did the full time machine back up of my imac. I then powered down the airport and the hard drive. I then plugged in the drive and airport and then powered them up. The airport lite up green then went yellow and stopped broadcasting.
Can these two work together like Time Capsule does?

I was sort of in the same boat. I ended up getting a 4th generation TC about six months ago. I only got the 2 TB model as I have a number of those WD My Passports laying around. I decided to use the TC's internal HDD as a NAS and use a powered USB hub with two My Passports attached to them for Time Machine backups. I use the 500 GB for my Mac mini backups and the 750 GB for my two other Mac laptops.
I could have just as easily switched to using the intenal HDD for Time Machine and the My Passports for the NAS. However, I wanted better to use the better transfer rates of the internal drive for my NAS.

I had been using my hard drive for a while and everything was fine, but when I went to plug it in today nothing happened. The blue light still comes on, but there are no sounds. It does not show up in windows explorer (8). It does, however, show up under "remove hardware safely," "devices and printers" and, as USB Mass Storage Device under USB Controllers in Device Manger. It does NOT show up in disk management.
I have tried every way of unplugging and re-plugging the USB cable and power cord (along with restarting/shutting down the computer). I have tried using different USB ports. I have tried using a different USB cable. I have tried unistalling the USB Controller in Device Manager and re-installing it (and one time I tried uninstalling it, then unplugging the power, then plugging power).
Now, I have had it plugged into my computer for about an hour, and when I open Devices and Printers, I can see it there, but it keeps disappearing and re-appearing.... this is where I am at... I am at a loss of what else to try.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Have you tried it with another computer? Does that computer see it?

By selecting the drive and pressing Command+E.
Any of these methods will work.
