SX50 HS with Speedlite 430 EX II

I'm trying to use a Speedlite 430 EX II with my SX 50 HS, but the Assist Beam of the flash doesn't seem to work.
The camera's Assist Beam works correctly, the flash fires, but the Speedlite's Assist Beam doesn't.
Is it normal?
Thank you!

Follow-up as promised:
When I mount the 430EX-II on my EOS Digital Rebel (DSLR), which DOES NOT have a built-in AF Assist beam, the AF Assist light in the 430EX-II operates exactly as it is supposed to, but when I mount it on any of my Power Shot cameras (G1, S5-IS, SX40-HS), all of which have built-in AF Assist beams, the cameras use their own built-in AF Assists and not the flash's.  It would appear that EOS (DSLR) cameras that do not have built-in AF Assist beams have the AF Assist request lead wired to the hot-shoe, while Power Shot cameras that have built-in AF Assist beams have the AF Assist request lead wired directly to the built-in beam circuitry and NOT to the hot-shoe at all.  This is in keeping with TCampbell's response to your post on this matter over in the "Speed Lite" Forum.  So, is your 430EX-II operating correctly ?  Yes, it appears to be.  Whether or not this could be a problem for you depends on your camera and how you use it.  The stated max useable AF Assist range (NOT the FLASH range) of the 430EX-II is 32 feet at center and 16 feet at the periphery.  Canon does not state the AF Assist range of its Power Shot cameras, but typically for this type of camera it is about 12 to 18 feet or less.  So, in certain circumstances you could find yourself where your flash's ability to illuminate the subject far exceeds your camera's ability to focus on it, thereby offsetting some of the benefits of the high-powered flash.  Some (many ? / all ?) of the ultra-long zoom point-and-shoots seem to have problems with Auto-Focus in low light conditions when fully zoomed in on a close by object, particulalry if it is soft, fuzzy, or lacks adjacent areas of sharp contrast.  Even if they can eventually focus, it takes them forever.  I have been having fairly good success extending the AF Assist range with a SunPak LED attachment, usually used with video cameras.  I mount the 430EX-II in the SX40-HS's hot-shoe as normal, and mount the LED device in the cold-shoe of an old folding "L bracket" type of flash bracket that screws into the tripod socket in the bottom of the camera.  It greatly extends the AF Assist range by improving the Auto Focus accuracy and speed, but is not bright enough to noticeably affect the exposure or color balance of the image.  It can even be of help in composing the shot.  NOTE:  This is for extending the AF Assist range - NOT the flash range.  As a matter of fact, I have grown to like the comfortable hand grip (left hand) of that old flash bracket so much, that I just leave it attached to camera all the time, even when I am not using the LED attachment.  It provides me with a much more stable grip than just the camera itself.
Good luck !

Ted

    Hi!
I'm trying to use a Speedlite 430 EX II with my SX 50 HS, but the Assist Beam of the flash doesn't seem to work.

    Thank you!

What do you mean by assist beam, the focus assist?  Or are you trying to wirelessly trigger the 430 with your camera?
If the former, the AF assist beam is very faint (it's a red cross hatch).  Best way to check is to try focusing on something in a dark room.  It won't work in AI Servo, and some dSLRs need so set some custom settings to get it to work.  I really don't know much about the SX 50 HS and if it's compatable.
If you're trying to use Canon's optical wireless system, I don't think that the SX 50 HS has it.

  • Canon Speedlite 430 EX ii slave for Canon Powershot SX 60 HS, How ?

Without purchasing any wirelss flash transmitter Can I use my Speedlite 430 EX ii as a slave external flash to work remotely ?
My target is I do not want to attach the flash unit directly into the hotshoe of camera but it should work remotely, How ?
Is it possible with Canon Powershot SX 60 HS ?
Details instruction needed. I tried to set the flash Channel 1, Slave A. But while shooting only pop up flash working not the external flash.
Camera ---------> Flash unit seperated-----> while shooting it must work, How possible ?

Yes I checked my SX60 HS no seperate menu for controlling external flash only little thing like red eye correction. I clicked zoom button of 430ex ii to set the flash as slave but my camera pop up flash doesn't trigger remotely. I am really sad a premium range bridge camera with a multihotshoe camera doesn't have this function built in. Can any expert check the matter in more details if I am not doing it in proper way/method pls.
Ok about 3rd party device like yongnuo YN622 wireless ETTL flash trigger receiver transmitter transceiver woyld work? How to be sure before purchasing?
Yes, the YN622C transceivers should work.  I used the YN-622C's with my G1x and they performed well. These transceivers fool the camera into thinking the flash is actually attached to the camera when it is not.
The basic optical slave in the link above will not work for two reasons.
    1) Your camera has an ETTL flash and the ETTL preflash will cause the slave to trigger at the wrong time.
    2) The Canon 430EX II has some circuitry that is incompatible with these types of optical triggers. They will fire once and then the flash will no longer respond.

  • SX50 HS with Field Monitor

    Hi,
Is it possible to connect the SX50 HS during shooting to an external Monitor via the HDMI output and do the composing / focusing on the much bigger screen?
Unfortunately I have no Mini-HDMI cable to test, so before I invest in cable and monitor I prefer to ask.
    Thanks
    Robert

CHDK does have Remote options for using several controls, but none for viewing live streams which I'm assuming what is meant by the OP - yes? I've been all over the CHDK PDF and there isn't a mention of streaming being made available to see better the Focussing and so on. Is there a loupe "shroud" that one of the Hoodman options:
    http://www.hoodmanusa.com/prodinfo.asp?number=h-lpp3
    http://www.hoodmanusa.com/cvp.asp
OK, I just tried with a mini to standard HDMI to my pro field monitor, which I do use with my Canon XF300, but to test I lashed it up to my SX50  - and no. I can't get a live stream from the SX50 output to see, only on Viewing previously captured work through Review. Nothing live.

  • Two sessions with GT 430

I want to start off by saying that I am LOVING Arch! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful distro!
I am currently trying to get my machine setup so I have two separate sessions, one to my monitor and wired keyboard/mouse, and the other to my HDMI output and wireless keyboards and mice. I have had some success, but am running into a little problem. Right now my wireless keyboards are still feeding to my monitor's session, and I am not seeing any video to my HDMI.

  • Can I wirelessly use a 430 EX II as a slave with the built in flash of the EOS T3i?

I have a Rebel EOS T3i.  According to its manual, pp 191 ff, I can fire a remote speedlite wirelessly from the camera.  I get an error message that the speedlite can't be found even though I have set up my speedlite 430 EX II according to its manual directions, pp25 ff.  Thanks for your help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes - the 430EX II will function as a slave and the T3i (but not the T2i or earlier) can remotely trigger the speedlite.
It's a bit tricky and can be confusing.
First... set the 430EX II in the right mode.  Press-and-HOLD the "Zoom" button for about 2 seconds or so.  This activates a menu that lets you put the flash in either a single-fash mode vs. remote "slave" mode.  Use half-circle buttons to toggle it to read "slave".  Press the "set" button (in the middle of those half-circle shape buttons.)  I don't happen to have my 430EX II handy, but it should default to Slave "A" and Channel "1".
    Now for the camera.
On your camera menu, the left-most tab (which we'll call "Red Camera #1" to distinguish it from other tabs) has the "Flash Control" as the last option on that screen.  Incidentally for cameras with a built-in popup flash, the menu is labeled "Flash Control".  For cameras that do NOT have built-in pop-up flash, that same menu is called "External speedlite control".
On that sub-menu (Flash Control), make sure "Flash Firing" (the top option) is set to "Enable" or  "CustWireless" -- it must NOT be set to "disable" or nothing will work.
You will see a menu options for "External Flash func. setting" (and also "External flash C.Fn setting".)  IGNORE THESE!  These are ONLY for flashes which are in the camera hot-shoe and do NOT control wireless remote flashes.  This is likely where you were getting confused.
Next go to "Built-in flash func. settings" where, ironically, you get to control how your camera communicates with your REMOTE flash (yes, I realize that's not the most intuitive place to put it.)  It turns out that it's your INTERNAL flash that is responsible for communicate with any REMOTE slave flashes.  The optical wireless actually uses visible light (a lot of people presume it's an infrared communication -- myself included -- I ultimately learned that was incorrect and it is actually the visible light of the flash itself.  It sends out communication to the remote by rapidly pulsing codes to tell the remote flash what to do.  All this happens before the image is exposed and you'd swear the flash only blinked once... but it turns out it's actually quite busy pulsing away to communicate.)
In the "Built-in flash func. settings" menu there are a number of things you need to set.
If you set the Built-in flash mode to "EasyWireless" it will gray out many other settings... basically the camera will automatically decide what it wants to do.  I think the only setting not gray is the channel number (which needs to match the channel number on your flash.  The purpose of channel numbers is to allow you to shoot at events where other photographers are also using wireless flash and not have conflicts where they're triggering your flashes and vice versa.
If you set the Built-in flash mode to "CustWireless" it allows you to set many other options.  CustWireless offers the most control.  It is ultimately probably the mode you'll use the most once you get used to remote speedlites.
In CustWireless mode, the "Wireless Func." menu option becomes available.  This option lets you decide if you want (I'm taking these out of order for simplicity of explaining):
    a)  both internal and external speedlites to fire as one group (external flash icon,  a PLUS sign (+) and the on-camera icon)
    b)  both internal and external speedlites to fire but allowing you to control the power RATIO (external flash icon, a COLON symbol ( and the on-camera icon means "ratios" can be customized.)
    c)  only external speedlites (only the external flash icon is on that option - no on-camera icon.)
I want to mention something about that external-only option because it confuses most people at first.  The camera communicates with the slave via the on-camera flash.  The on-camera flash pulses rapidly to send instructions to the remote flash units.  This means that in order to use slave-flashes, the on-camera flash must be raised (in the popped-up position).  If you ask for external flash only (no on-camera) the on-camera flash will only pulse instructions BEFORE the camera shutter opens to take the exposure.  When I first started learning about external speedlites, I saw the on-camera flash fire and thought my settings were being ignored.  Not to worry... when you check your images you will see that there was no light provided by the on-camera flash DURING the exposure... all that flashing happens before the shutter opens.   Everything happens so fast that you'd swear all the flashes only fired once... but in reality they actually do a lot of "talking" before taking the picture but this happens incredibly fast.
And one last comment... since the camera communicates via the optical (visible light) flash to talk to the remotes, it is important the the lower-body of your 430EX II can "see" the flash on the camera.  In small rooms it doesn't really matter where the lower-body is pointed... it'll notice the pulses of light from the on-camera flash.  But in large rooms or outdoors the lower-body of your 430EX II (where the receiver is located) wont get any reflection from walls, etc.  In these situations, just rotate the lower body of the 430EX II so that it is facing the on-camera flash.  You can then swivel the head of the 430EX II to point wherever you need it.  The 430EX II will fire even in full daylight as long as it can "see" that on-camera flash.

  • What's the best flash to use for nighttime sports games?

What's the best flash to use for nighttime sporting events? I have a rebel XT and I'm pushing it to its limits trying to stop the action. I've tried a speedlite 430 but it didn't have a hook up for an external battery pack and I was told I'd need the extra power. Just tried the 580ex ll on Friday but at the 1/1 setting, it didn't flash for each frame in a burst, even with the external power. I should have backed it down to 1/4 but didn't know at the time. Any thought on a really good flash for night sports? Is the 580 a good choice?

JUst as Tim_S said. YOu will want a external battery pack. Unforatannly the 430 does not have the option to plug in a external battery pack so will want to pick up a 580 or one of the new 600 series.
Then you start looking at the battery packs. I recommend Quantum power packs

  • Original Digital Rebel and Flash Recommendations

I have the original Digital Rebel camera, which I purchased in 2001, I think it was.  And I would like to add a flash unit to it.  I am specifically looking one of the speedlites, but can't tell if any of them will work.  I would hate to by one only to find out that it won't fit this camera.  I was specifically looking at the 600EX-RT.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I guess I’m a little biased against the 600EX, only because I feel that Canon is really trying to box you into the Canon system at exorbitant prices given the cost of modern day radio triggers.  But there are plenty that own and love them.
I would go for a 430 or 580.  I own both, and I started with a 430.  Obviously the 580 is a bit stronger, has more flexibility, and a few more specialty options like strobe.  I don’t think any of them are game changers, but added up it’s certainly a more advanced flash.  The biggest difference for me is the controls.  I hate the controls on the 430.  I have to use the edge of my nail to push the center button to change power.  The 580 is much better.  That said, I didn’t miss the difference when I only owned a 430.
All the digital EOS cameras are Type-A and compatible with eTTL.  However, Type-A II started at the 350D so you won’t be able to use that metering mode.  It’s an upgraded form of eTTL, and it’s a function of the camera.  All the mark II versions of the flash: 430exII and 580exII can do it, so if and when you upgrade you’ll be able to use the new mode.  I don’t know that you’ll really be able to tell the difference.

Greetings everyone,                                      My name is Tim Reilly and I am not a professional photographer. Actually...I am a pretty simple guy who LOVES to take pictures. I am a guy who had a desire to take good photos of my kids while they were growing up. I simply showed up to their school plays, games, field trips, etc with my camera.  I started 10 years ago with my oldest daughter and am still going strong with my youngest son...now a junior in high school. I started this little hobby as a personal need to get some good shots of my kids and it has evolved into me being the  "official/unofficial" school photographer. I started shooting with the Sony f828. I was able to get adequate shots but something was missing. When I took the plunge and got serious about quality I upgraded to Canon. Previously  I have shot with the 30D then the 50D and I have settled into the 1D mark IV. I shoot primarily with the 70-200mm L series and the 16-35mm wide angle zoom lens..L series as well. I recently purchased the 40mm pancake lens and have been happy with the performance so far. If there is 1 thing I can add to this forum it is to say that there is an unlimited source of events to photograph right under your nose...that would be at your local high schools. I have been most fortunate in my little corner of the world. I have photographed 2 state football championships as well as many state championship runs that fell short. I have had opportunities to shoot everything from weddings...not a big fan...to funerals...also not a big fan. State championships to school plays, dances, assemblys and everything inbetween. I edit 99% with Adobe lightroom4. I am a guy who loves to take pictures and I am getting better every day. I am excited to be a part of this forum with hopes of learning something from you and hopes that I may have something you can use.

  • GeForce4 Ti4400 - various problems

I have been having various problems with my card.  These include:  Pausing for several seconds (like a lock up) then reverting to vga mode;  complete freeze where I have to reset the computer;  red lines and dots that fill the screen sporadically;  a blank screen appears for 2-3 seconds and then back to normal.
In all cases I have to reboot to correct.  Sometimes rebooting does not help.  The red lines and dots return even on the posting screen.  When this happens Windows/XP doesn't even start.
I have to powerthe machine off and let it sit for awhile and then turn it back on.
I'm using the latest driver from the MSI website:
    nv4_disp   Version 6.13.10.3100
    VBA bios info:     4.25.00.22.44
I have a Gigabyte  GA7VRXP MB,  AMD 1800+ cpu, 512MB pc2700 memory from Samsung, HP cd-writer, lg dvd-rom drive, and 40Gb Maxtor hard drive.
This is all in an antec case Plus880 with true 430 ps
I also get  a windows/xp dump file in:  windows\logfiles\watchdog   Here is what is in there:
    // Watchdog Event Log File

I have 98SE so I don't know much about XP, but the artifacts you're seeing and the way it sometimes needs to be left off for a while makes it sound almost like it's overheating, because I had similar screwups when I overclocked another vidcard a few years back too much.
Check the fan on the card to see if it's running and make sure it's getting good ventilation (the card might be too close to another card on the board). If you have access to it, some of that cooling spray they have for testing electronics (might check Radio Shack or a PC store) might help show if it's temp-related or not.
And if you're running an overclock utility, try resetting to card defaults for a while. Running it past a certain point will screw it up even if you have it sitting in a freezer for cooling! :^)
    Good luck.

  • HP dv9000z...general musings & errors

Laptop comes (stock) with nforce 430 chipset and GeForce Go 6150 integrated video.
    As of Kernel26-2.6.18-7:
Will not boot (arch64) without out first turning off acpi.
(hangs randomly and or no visual output after boot)
Will not boot 7.2 install (stock or topwa's)
kernel panic on topaw's and I forget what error on stock
Nvidia1.0.8774-2 installs, however a reboot produces nothing but a black screen (x loads, you just can't see anything....at all)
       NV driver works
       HorizSync 30-82
VertRefresh 56-76  <-----2+hrs on HP's chat site just to get H&V values!!!
       Modeline "1440x900@60" 108.84 1440 1472 1880 1912 900 918 927 946
I would very much appreciate help on getting this working w/nvidia driver (as opposed to nv...sucks) as well as w/o having to turn off acpi.

Haven't tried wireless yet, nor card readers nor firewire...just trying to get basics down for right now.
    EDIT:
Tired beyond kernel...same deal as stock.
May try ck but I'm sure it'll produce same results.

So on a whim i decided to give a live cd a shot...sabayon linux... pretty sweet for a live cd uses beryl, emerald, aiglx or xgl, and the latest beta drivers for nividia. Check it out if you want to see some nice eyecandy via a live cd SABAYON. Booted it up and worked like a champ. Didn't have to turn off acpi either.
Turns out this model of laptop doesn't work with the current nvidia 8x drivers, only the 9x drivers. Answers that problem.
Reinstalled arch64 7.2 and got it to work w/out turning off acpi. Don't know why it's working now where it didn't before...I did nothing different. However during the boot process i get LOTS of udev errors. Where can I find a log of the entire boot process? I've checked all of the logs in /var/log and didn't see anything about udev errors.
Sound works out the gate...sort of. When you go to the properties of the sound module there's only 1 option (Master) for a slider. Also, having headphones plugged in doesn't turn off the laptop speakers, nor does it pipe sound to the headphones.
P.S. Kudos to ArchLinux!!! a beryl search at google.com/linux turns us up as the 3rd link!!!

  • New system will not boot up.

I am in the process of building a new system and it will not boot to the post. The power gets to the cpu fan and case fan for about 5 seconds then shguts off. I have to clear cmos to get the same response. Please help, I have pulled everything from the case and tried to boot with just the cpu and memory. Same result.

Would be nice if you guys had different psu's to try.
I recently had the "reboot loop during startup" problem with an Abit AI7 and the Antec  TruePower 480.  However, the problem didn't start to occur until several months after it was new.  After replacing the PS with a 430 amp Enermax the problem went away.

  • Intel Turbo Boost Driver

    Greetings
I have the i3-M330 chip on my laptop.  I was looking at laptops with i5-430 ( ? ) chips.  CNET stated that the later comes with Turbo boost.  But  seems the Turbo Boost driver is available for my chipset also.  Has anyone tried to install it on this chipset?   Does anyone have any preference between the i3s adn i5s?  I like my laptop alot since the video card is separate.  I am just curious how the Turbo boost driver works on i3s.  I remember the MMX technology was not very successful, and this Turbo boost seems like a similar attempt.  Any thought?

Please install the drivers as per the instructions from the following weblinks depending on the operating system installed on the system:
