Symantec AntiVirus LiveUpdate hangs my mac mini intel

Hello. I have an intel mac mini running mac osx 10.4.6 I
installed norton antivirus corporate edition (site-licensed
at my university) and all worked well.
That is, it did until I installed the firmware update on
the mini. Since then, when I try to run live update, the
system hangs, and all I can do is move the cursor around
the screen with the mouse. Can't click on anything, can't
break out with the keyboard, nothing. Need to reboot.
I can't find any information on this on the symantec site.
crDo you guys know anything about it?
Based on another thread I read here, I looked at crontab
(crontab -l), and it said "no crontab".
Thanks very much

I don't know what is causing your issues, but in the meantime you can get the latest virus definitions from sites such as MacUpdate (just type "norton" in the search field).
FYI definitions for Norton Antivirus X 9 will also work with Norton AV X 10.
BTW there have been two firmware updates for Intel-based Mac minis (Firmware Update 1.0.1 and SMC Firmware Update). Which one did you install before the issue came up ?

  • Mac mini (intel) Dead :(

Ok this has being going on for months. The only programs I use are iTunes and Eyetv. They crash several times a day, regardless of the versions used.
If I put the Mini to sleep over night for example, I wake it up and about 15 sec later It hangs, the coloured ball appears and spins for ever. I force quit the Mini and it can't fine the HD. I get the folder with a question mark. I unplug everything including power, wait 30sec plug in the power start up the mini and it's fine until the next day when I do it all again.
This method no longer works. It will not start up. Tried the utilities from the system disc but no HD shows up.
    Any ideas ??? Any one.
Mac Mini Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Here is wat to do:
    1. copy all your important data via fire wire
    2. use the disk utility on the osx disk to write zeros to your HD
    3. resart
    4. reinsal mac osx
This was cause most likely by eyetv because the hardrive is very active while using it so if u had a power surge or pushed the computer 2 far and started to use the hd as Vram you corupted your harddisk.. i did the same thing running linux in paralles

  • Mac mini Intel Updated to 10.4.10 - Won't boot if Airport turned on

Just updated my Mini to 10.4.10. I have two locations set up - one wired, and one wireless. If the location is set to use Airport, the machine will not boot. It may get to the desktop, but usually hangs before the dock makes it onto the screen. I need to do a Safe Boot, and change the location back to Wired for it to boot. After that, it works perfectly fine until I try wireless again, resulting in the same problem. Taking cues from some of the threads here, I downloaded and applied the Combo update, but it didn't help. It worked just fine under 10.4.9, and is completely reproduceable under 10.4.10. I tried turning off my Linksys wireless router to see if talking to it was giving Airport trouble, but even with the router powered off, the mini still hangs.
Saw some other threads about people having difficulties after 10.4.10 using HDMI to an HDTV, which I am also using, so maybe there's some combination of DVI->HDMI monitor and Airport???
Mac Mini (Intel Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   DVI->HDMI->Vizio GV47L HDTV

Curiously, of the 3 users I have with Intel minis who updated to 10.4.10, none have boot problems with Airport enabled. None are using any unusual adapters etc, but the systems are behaving correctly none-the-less.
However, there are obviously some users who do have problems, and just to be clear, since this is a user-to-user support forum, Apple do NOT read these threads. Well, to be more accurate, the forum hosts do, but solely from the standpoint of 'policing' content, and from time to time other staffers may, though not for the purpose of identifying technical issues. It is expected that users wishing to report a problem contact Apple directly to do so, and for all those suffering this anomaly (and others like it should they occur) it cannot be stressed too much that if the answer cannot be found here from another user, contacting Apple directly to make them aware of the problem is the best way forward.
In many instances, these issues turn out to be caused by issues that already pre-existed in the system before an update was installed, but in other instances where there is a genuine issue with an update and a specific piece of hardware or software or in certain operating circumstances, often the only way Apple will know is if users report it to them directly so they can then examine the details of each reported case to help identify the cause and then release a fix if it is necessary.
A useful resource for reporting and troubleshooting issues like these is http://www.macfixit.com/ though it's interesting to note that they don't seem to indicate this particular issue has been reported to them. They do, however, have a comprehensive guide on reinstalling MacOS at http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070709083546267 for those who want to downgrade from 10.4.10

  • Firmware Updates on Mac Mini Intel

I have a mac mini intel. Two firmware updates come up via Software Update:
    - Mac mini SMC Firmware Update version 1.0
    - Mac mini EFI Firmware Update version 1.1
I have tried to install both of these individually several times. Each time, after I double click on the icon in the Utilities folder I enter my password and choose "shut down". Each time, the system starts the process and never really shuts down. Instead, it hangs on my desktop screen. Eventually, I push the power button. Then, I hold the button down like the instructions say. There is a sound and then it reboots a second time and returns to the login.
The problem is that when I log back in, it says the update has not installed!
I'm using the original Mac Mini Intel (the higher cost version) and the OS is totally updated. I need to update the firmware so that my bluetooth headset will work properly.
    Any suggestions?

I do not have a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer, and I was not planning on getting one. The only task I cannot do is run the update for my Nokia N80.
I wonder if Nokia are planning to release a "over-the-air" update for this phone? It's a pain that the update process requires such particular software.
I believe v4 of the firmware is downloadable via OTA. It may be network/firmware dependant though. It does mean you'll have to pop along to the local Nokia shop for this update or follow the instructions above.
I have full End User experience of:

  • How to use a mac mini intel with 30" cinema display

Arg, I just bought an Apple 30" cinema display to go with my new Mac mini intel, but oops the 30" apple cinema display has to use a dual link dvi card. Anyone know how to get out of this horrible situation without buying another new computer.
    Thanks!

If you want to run the LCD at it's high 2560x1600 resolution, then you have absolutely no option whatsoever than to buy a PowerMac or MacBook Pro. Otherwise, you will be able to run the panel at 1280x800 with the Mac mini, which wouldn't make much sense though.

Good catch. I would never have though of that since I eagerly anticipate each chance I get for a clean install.

  • Mac Mini Intel Core Solo 1,5GHz won't turn on

    Hi at all!
I'm in a trouble with a Mac Mini Intel Core Solo-based.
Well, when I connect power cord, after a while, Power LED self-turns on (without powering on the Mac), but Startup Chime isn't played, there aren't no video signals on screen, Optical Drive mechanics isn't initialized and no Hard disk Drive noise is audible.
I can hear only (if I put my ear on Mini's body) a bit Fan Noise (and a bit air flow on the back).
If I stay-pressing power button for 4 seconds, Mac turns off. It I re-press that button, Mac turns on again. Finally, if I long-press the power button, Mac DON'T perform PMU reset (with classical speed flashing of power led, Long beep and Startup Chime).
What can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks very much to all readers!

    You're right!
I wrote PMU instead of SMU.....in fact, mine is an Intel-based Mac, and PMU is present only in PowerPC Architecture.... ^_^
    Sorry for my expression error.....:)
While I'm writing..... I thought that, in my Self-repairing operations on the Mac Mini, I've also replaced the internal 3V battery (because, with a multimeter, I'd can verify that battery voltage was only 1,75V instead of near 3V). After that, I left Mac turned off for a certain interval of time (I was busy in other personal activities). So, when I turned on again the Mac (after the complete reassembly of the entire computer), the Startup chime was played and the Mac beguns to work.
Is possible that, in the Mini - Intel Core Solo 1,5GHz, a low internal battery can cause problems like in the old dear iMacs G3 ????

  • Hitachi PJ-TX300 projector and Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo?

My PJ-TX300 projector is hooked up via its PC connector to my Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo, via a DVI to VGA adapter (which came with the Mini from Apple) plugged into the Mac mini. I cannot get a clear screen picture at any resolution: there is always ghosting. Can you advise me?

Ghosting would typically implicate the video cable. Where did you get it? It sounds like you may have a very cheaply constructed VGA cable and a better one is needed.

  • Dual Powermac G5 vs Mac mini Intel Duo

I'm sure this has been discussed already, but I would some more input on this.
I am looking to upgrade to a faster Mac. I am currently running a G4 1.25 DP with 2Gigs of RAM. It's a fine machine, but I would like to take advantage of some of Apple's more powerful units. Anyway, I am considerering a Dual Processor 2.0 G5 Powermac with about 2.5 to 4gigs of RAM, or my other choice is one of the new Mac mini Intel Core Duo models with RAM maxed and a faster larger HD.
My question is--what machine would give me a better performance running Universal Apps, such as Logic, Soundtrack Pro, ect...? Obviously, the Apples are all going to way of the Intel and I have been hearing great things about the new Intels. The Mac-mini has limited expandabiltiy and one Firewire port, but runs Intel. What to do? I may consider the Imac G5 core duo as well.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Randy

    well here' my experience...
i recently sold a dual 1.8 G5 with 2GB RAM. reason being simply to get rid of it while it was still worth something. on top of that, it was really large, loud and put out a ton of heat. i bought the Core Duo mini with a GB of RAM as a sort of temporary machine until the next Intel "Pro" towers come out. i've been using it for about a month now for Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live and Reason and soon my SoudTrack Pro Universal disks will be here as well. i was really concerned that the system would feel slow coming from the G5 but i can totally recommend this machine with confidence as it feel and performs as fast as (and sometimes faster than) by dual G5. i'm talking when using Universal binaries of course. these Intels are fast. the mini is a silent, snappy little machine. there are a few things i miss that will eventually prompt me to buy a tower such as:
limited internal storage options - i believe the largest 7200RPM hard disk you can put in the mini is the 100GB from Seagate. of course, external Firewire and USB storage is always an option.
the limited graphics card could be an issue for some. it doesn't seem to directly affect audio performance but just knowing that it's using your hard RAM is a bit unsettling.
i miss FireWire 800, even though the G5 had serious slow-down issues when writing to fw800.
    i miss using two displays.
having said all that; the speed, quietness and cool running temperature of this mini is enough to outweigh any negatives. i notice zero speed decrease from the dual g5 and cost me about a third of the price. it will make a great temporary workstation for me and when the next towers come out it will make a great livingroom entertainment system and perform node duties over gigabit ethernet. don't hesitate. it's a great system.

  • Tiger Update Crashes my Mac Mini Intel

I got a new Mac Mini and finally got it going though it was not easy to transfer from my eMac. But I prevailed. Then I made the fatal mistake of updating all that the Software Update software suggested. Now my brand new Mac Mini will not run at all.
REWIND: I tried to update my eMac a couple of weeks ago to Tiger. I did that and ran Software Update and GUESS WHAT? It crashed my eMac so badly I had to reinstall ALL the Panther software.
    Did Microsoft buy Apple???

I figured out the problem last night after a week of gnashing, grumping, and general anxiety. Hope this post helps others with a similar problem.
I have a free Lexmark 1150 All-In-One printer attached to my Mac. Apparently Tiger DOES NOT like the Lexmark application that turns off the printer during Restart and Shutdown. The application is in Library/Startupwhatever folder and I just trashed the Lexmarksleep..app (whatever it is named - I'm at work and cannot remember the exact name) and erased it.
Now my Mac Mini is back working like a Mac - PERFECT.

  • Mac Mini (Intel) Ticking/Clicking Sound

I purchased a new Mac Mini (1.8, 80gb, 1gb, superdrive) about a week ago, and have enjoyed using it ever since, however I recently there is a ticking or clicking sound coming from the unit which sounds to me like it may be the hard disk either starting up, or parking down, this happens intermittently and doesn't seem to follow any strict pattern.
Opening Activity Monitor and viewing the Disk Activity tab reveals that there is usually a small amount of data being written to the hard disk when the ticking occurs, however this is not the case 100% of the time.
The disk appears to be fine according to its S.M.A.R.T. status, however I've had "verified" disks fail on me before, therefore don't really trust the S.M.A.R.T. monitoring.
Does anyone have any suggestion on what this may be?

The drive is actually a Fujitsu.
It's now started clicking again after being left on
over night, I've closed everything and tried running
fs_usage, but could see no distinct pattern when the
    sound occurred.
This is happening to me with my 80GB Fujitsu Mac Mini Intel. It started after about two weeks of use. This also happened to my G4 Mini with the stock Seagate drive. My old G4 eventually beat itself to death over the course of a month and I have a feeling this one is going to do the same. My second drive (Toshiba I think) didn't have any problems so it may be that only certain drive models are affected.
I also downloaded and ran fseventer, which again
revealed nothing, when it first clicked after opening
the app it said the machine was writing to Finders
plist file, however nothing registered after this
    with subsequent clicks.
Yeah, fs_usage doesn't seem to reveal anything significant either.
I'm still in the dark with this, and have a hard time
    believing it to be normal.
I agree, I think there's something wrong with the Mac Mini power controller. My drive mainly does it when it is left running overnight. As soon as I sleep and wake the drive, the noise goes away - to me that suggests a controller just needs reset. I've resorted to sleeping the drive overnight and when I'm out until Apple post a fix for it. The drive head slamming into the mechanical stop is not normal in the same way a train slamming into the mechanical stops at the station is not normal. Some control is being messed up - according to the last site, it is usually caused by the fact that the servo calibration is messed up and cannot properly govern the speed and position of the head assembly on the drive and this is worsened by temperature.

I purchased a new Mac Mini Intel Duo 2.53 320HD 4gb and a new Airport Extreme, new iWorks, wireless Mouse and keyboard, ipod touch 8gig and have a iphone 3gs 16g already few months old. My Mac Mini keeps trying to install something in System/Library/CoreServices and halts permission check until Disk Utility saying that it has been altered and will not repair. I did notice in that directory everything about Apple Remote Desktop, including ARDAgent / AppleVNCServer.bundle which contains curtainlock, kickstart, remote desktop.incs, RemoteDeskoptAgent, lock.jpg, networkUser.tiff, Lockscreen, lockscreekLeopard386, VNC Gues, sshHelper, writesettings, VNC PrivilageProxy, AppleVNCServer, Screensharing, Upgrade User, UserAccountUpdate, WorkflowServerRunner, Ticket Viewer and so on. My new Apple Extreme Dual Band, paid $179 for it, shows another base station when trying to re-set to factory settings that doesnt match mine, and I have no other apple stuff in my apartment. Also, before I can even enter the password and set it up, the Amber solid light turns green, and thanks me at the end for setting up my wireless with a usb printer. I don't have, nor ever setup a printer, no in my sharing, and under Airport at the top of my screen listing all the networks in my area also has a second section listed Devices - and it shows a hpsetup under my computer's airport.
Would buying techtools deluxe help fix this problem? Or norton Security for mac? or use the PGP Corporation Whole Desktop security Apple recommends to encrypt everything and re-install my operating system after I do a full erase with a one zero clean on both empty and disk02 - Machintosh HD?
Also my iphone 3gs is acting strange. It says the AT&T firmware is 5.11.7 and 3.1.2 (7D11) but the actual model number has changed from whatever M..L/A to now just M...LL (no /A).

Actually, he has 2GB of RAM and a 2.26 GHz processor.
I'd suggest trying it. Worst thing that could happen is your system is too sluggish to use, in which case you reformat the partition (or remove if you want) and install a different, more compatible version of Windows. But personally, I could see it working well for you. However, if you're using an Apple Wireless keyboard and Mighty/Magic Mouse, you may run into some problems with pairing, however, this is a Boot Camp driver problem and can be fixed fairly easily.
I can't see it creating any problems, I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on my Mac mini with only 1GB Ram and a 1.66 GHz processor. And it's running really smooth. I should also note that Windows 7 uses far less resources than Vista, thus it runs a little better on slower machines than Vista did.

  • Dualdisc cd side won't play on my mac mini intel core duo w Superdrive

Shakira Fijacion Oral DualDisc "CD" side will insert and then automatically reject from my Mac Mini - Intel Core Duo. The DVD side plays fine. Unfortunately iTunes not smart enough to work with DVD side. There is a query in IPOD forum about Springsteen DualDisc also failing on intel mini mac that is listed at "answered" but for the life of me, I can't tell if you are supposed to just not buy DualDisc or else take the Mac Mini back for a new drive.
mac mini (intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo's did not ship until 2006 which seems plenty of time for Apple to announce 'we have a problem' and what their recommended solution.
Why would they do that ? I mean, they don't have a problem. The inventors of DualDisc made a type of disc that won't play in all players, and Apple can't really do anything about it. Superdrives are not made by Apple, it's just Apple's name for a DVD burner; the Superdrives that are found in various Macs come from several different manufacturers, and although Apple probably ensures that the Superdrive and the Mac work well together, they won't test whether it works with each type of disc (usually, the manufacturer will).
However, that is probably limited to redbook/standards-compliant discs; since a DualDisc's CD side doesn't comply with any standard other than "DualDisc", and because it is not considered important enough to be officially supported by most (if not all) manufacturers, they probably won't test them since they're bound to get mixed results anyway.
Similarly I don't remember seeing a "strictly redbook only" disclaimer on any of the media available from Apple describing the capabilities of its Superdrive when I was making my mac mini buying decision.
You didn't see one because it is not required. Asking that Apple (or any other company) warns you that their players won't play non-redbook CDs is a bit like asking that they tell you everything your optical drive won't play. Apple claims that their Superdrives will read CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R DL, which aren't only a bunch of weird-looking letters, but also correspond to a standard. When you see a CD logo on a drive, it means that it will play redbook-compliant CDs. Your Dell player simply does more that what it is supposedly capable of, but because one (or many) optical drives will play DualDisc doesn't mean that they all have to.
