Symbol to call back on the main timeline with Label?

Hi,
I have a symbol called Panel_1. When it slides out, I have a button inside to call out to Panel_2.
I created Panel_2 on a main timeline (only 1 frame) using a Label called "Label_2".
This code doesn't work with I click.
sym.getComposition().getStage().sym.play("Label_2").play();
Any idea how to fix the code?

You need to remove the second sym in the code.

  • Convert a movie clip back to the main timeline? Help!

    I hope you guys can help me with this because this is a work project. Here's the situation:
    The entire .fla animation consists of nothing but two really long movie clips. Which are placed on frames 1 and 2 of the main timeline. Now for reasons that are too deep for me to go into explaination about my boss is telling me that I have to have everything main timeline -no movie clips. I've tried copypasting all of the frames but they all paste wayyy to large on the main timeline and they wind up in different places on the stage.
    How can I move all of the frames from my two movie clips onto the main timeline without everything breaking? Better yet - is there any way to just convert a movie clip into an .fla?

    you're on the right track.  note the x,y of your movieclip in frame 1.  create a new layer and paste all the frame 1 movieclip's frames into that new layer.  click the edit multiple frames icon below your timeline.  select all the frames, click an on-stage object.  in the properties panel, change the x,y of the all the selected objects to the previously noted values

    OK, I have a main timeline that has 27 different scenes.  I have a movie clip that is an "on call" navigation menu for the main timeline.  I can call the menu once, and it will go to the first place I want it to go.  However, I cannot seem to figure out how to get it to go away to be able to call it again.  I get the "must be child of caller" error.  Any thoughts on how to get rid of it each time I use it?

    I had the same problem with mine when I connect the ipod when it's full charged and turn on. The problem never happen when the ipod is charging or i'ts full charged and it's turn off. So just turn off your ipod down and connect to your mac again.

    Is the store frozen i.e. can you navigate within that category ? You could try closing the iBooks app completely and then re-open it and see if it then works : from the home screen (i.e. not with iBooks 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iBooks app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

  • Targeting the main timeline

    Trying to make the switch from AS2 to AS3 and like many
    before me, becoming confused.
    I've laid out three movieClips on my main timeline (named,
    "main") and spaced them five frames apart, nice and tidy, like I
    like to do. Each frame on the main timeline containing a movieClip
    has been given a unique frame label. My problem is, I want to have
    the movieClips jump to the next targeted movieClip on the main
    timeline after clicking a button, or upon entering the last frame
    of its predecessor, in some cases. In AS2 the was easy to do this
    was by using the gotoAndPlay function and targeting to the_root
    timeline. Now I can't figure out what to do. I can make any button
    inside a movieClip target a specific frame within that same mc, but
    cannot make a jump to the main timeline to play the next movieClip.
    What am I missing here? I'm a noobie at AS3 and fumbling my
    way forward. (should be obvious now) Is there a simple way to refer
    back to the main timeline, which is only one level up? What am I
    missing?
    Here's as far as I got with the AS3 code within the mcs:

    The trace function runs true so it's a matter of telling the
    player how to get to the main timeline and frame label.

    presented with the issue of having the last frame of movieClip2
    automatically taking the viewer back to the main timeline to begin
    playing movieClip3, located on frame label "gsm".
    Again, I know this should be easy, but conceptually I am
    having a problem with how to do this. I don't have a button to
    attach the AS3 to and this new syntax is confusing to me. Nor do I
    want this to be a button based decision on the viewer's part. How
    do I attach this automatic jump back to the main timeline, frame
    label "gsm"? By an enterFrame event, which seems old school AS2? or
    stage.addEventListener? Is enterFrame even the way to do it
    anymore?
    Lynda.com tutorials are great but I'm struggling with this.

  • How can I reference the main timeline on a swf once it was loaded into another?

    I have an swf with some custon animation functions using actionscript 3. I'm refering to the main timeline with Movieclip(root) and it works just fine.
    However, this swf is going to be loaded inside another (a custom player), and when that happends, everything stops working.
    I think it's because the Movieclip(root) is now referencing to the loader swf and not the loaded anymore, but I just can't find any information on how to fix that.

    This is basically what I´m doing here:
    I'm placing this code on frame 1, and calling the function textAnimate() whenever I need to insert some text.

    The swf works fine, but once it´s loaded into the player, nothing works anymore. Unfortunately, I don't have the code for the player, and can't change anything about it... :/

    I'm not really sure how to properly describe this so please
    bear with me.
    Say you create an animated action on your main timeline with
    a symbol. Then you decide you want to take that action and put it
    into a movie clip so that it migrates across the screen. Since it
    is already on your main timeline, how do you take that layer, and
    convert it into a movie clip?
    I hope I've described this clearly enough.

    Select all the frames on the layer, right-click on them and
    select copy frames. Create a new symbol. Right-click on the first
    frame of this new movieclip and select paste frames. Go back to the
    main timeline and delete the layer.

    your can use _root to reference the main timeline from anywhere though that can lead to problems if your swf is loaded by another swf.  because of that eventuality, it would be better to use a relative path back to the main timeline.
    so, from a movieclip's timeline (when the movieclip is on the main timeline), you can use _parent to reference the main timeline.
    but even better would be to use no code on that movieclip's timeline and keep all your code on one timeline (the main one).

    You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi.     How do I expand the animation timeline with labels. I'm working through the Edge Animate "Classroom in a Book". In lesson 3 I successfully expanded the animation time line by selecting all the timelines and dragging the cursor from the last frame after the cursor turned into the double arrow.
    In lesson 5 I put in some labels and the lesson text told me that when the timeline is expanded the labels would change position proportionally. This didn't happen. The labels stayed where they were. When I used the menu to "select all" the timelines and the labels were selected but then when I tried to expand the total animation timeline by dragging the last frame the whole sequence moved along the timeline without expanding proportionally.
    What am I going wrong?

    I'm not familiar with the details of the lesson that you're referring to, but I am able to lengthen transitions and labels at the same time. The first step is to select all (Cmd/Ctrl+A) in the timeline, as you did. And after reading your description, it seems like you're doing everything correctly but just in case a visual example is helpful, here's a screencast that I just made using Edge Animate CC 2014:

    Ive created a box, turned it into a symbol called box,
    Inside box i have a left to right animation with auto play turned off.
    I then went back to the main stage, clicked the box, added action, on click to play, yet it does nothing.

    On click handler for the symbol use
    sym.getComposition().getStage().getSymbol("nameofsymbol").play();
    or
    sym.getSymbol("nameofsymbol").play();
    replace the italics with the literal name of the symbol as it appears in the Elements panel.

    Just getting started with Animate and coming to it from Flash, as may be apparent from my question. How do you set a variable to the main timeline from within a symbol?
    I have 24 pairs of clickable elements, each in their own symbols, and all 24 of those symbols sit inside another symbol. I want all 24 to be able to set the same global variable when clicked. I can't find that this question is addressed anywhere, which makes me think I may be stuck in a Flash mindset and approaching the task in the wrong way. (There are however MANY discussions of how to address objects at different levels in the hierarchy. That's well covered.)
    Relatedly, how do you access a function on the main timeline from within a symbol?
    Adobe should consider putting together a support page (or pages) just for folks migrating form Flash. In the materials I've encountered so far there seems to be a studied effort to refrain from mentioning Flash in any way. I imagine there are a lot of people out there like me who have a deep background in Flash coding, but are just getting started with Animate. We don't need help with most of the basic concepts, but we may still have some pretty basic questions about how to accomplish some things in Animate because our Flash knowledge is getting in the way.
