Sync iPod with iTunes - reduce network bandwidth for iTunes music folder

I'm using a network drive for my iTunes music folder. Average bandwidth is 50Mbps, compared to, say, an external USB HDD with hi-speed USB bandwidth of 750Mbps.
For some reason iTunes needs to consult the files in the iTunes music folder when syncing an iPod. That is, it needs to access the music files even when there is no change and no files actually need copying from the music folder to the iPod.
Because iTunes is reading my music files, it's really slowing down a sync.
How do I get iTunes only to look at my music folder when there's a file to copy. Reading each file just for a sync is consuming resources and I can't see that it's necessary - iTunes knows what is in my music folder as it has the library xml file stored locally on the PC hosting iTunes.
Anyone have any advice here ?
Thanks.
PS have posted this Q twice before with no replies. Hopefully yet another paraphrase to make the question more relevant with get some help from a kind soul out there.
Here's a link to my previous post(s): http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=802961

On my Mac, if the external drive with iTunes library is not connected, it will error out and ask if I want to keep looking for the files.
I'm using a network drive for my iTunes music folder. Average bandwidth is 50Mbps
Why so slow? Is it wireless? What kind of connection is it?
iTunes also wants to know if there is a file to delete or if there is a file that has changed.
an external USB HDD with hi-speed USB bandwidth of 750Mbps
USB 2.0 theoretical max speed is 480Mbit/s. Realistic max speed is ~60% of that.
iTunes knows what is in my music folder as it has the library xml file stored locally on the PC hosting iTunes.
iTunes does not use the library.xml file. It is simply created for other applications to access iTUnes library.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up new computer with newest version of itunes

Cannot sync ipod with itunes after setting up on new computer, only songs which tansferred were songs bought on new computer after set up, tried to sync songs and it deleted old songs from ipod.  How can I get them back on ipod??  They are showing in music library on itunes still.

If the iPod database gets corrupted, it will add files to "Other" instead of where they really belong.
Restoring the iPod will erase this database and recreate it.
And if I do this, won't I just have the same issue when my iPod is re-updated to the most recent version again?
No, it shouldn't. This is why you Restore the iPod. It erases the corrupt database.

  • The network bandwidth for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

I use BITS in Powershell script to download files from Internet. The download speed is 1mb or lower. I tried set 2mb in the following local policy but not working. the reason could be the policy is not for Windows 7. Anyone has suggestion?

    Hi,
The following policies are supported in Window 7
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) |Set up a maintence schedule to limit the maximum network bandwidth used for BITS Background transfers

  • HT4335 Does Itunes have a solution for playing music in a business setting?

Does Itunes have a solutions for playing music in a business setting?  Can you play your downloaded music in a business-overhead speakers?

Presuming you are referring to the iTunes Store, tracks purchased from that service are for personal use only and are not licensed for use in any commercial setting. You will need to either find a commercial service to provide music (easiest by far, though perhaps not the cheapest), or buy the appropriate CDs and then obtain a license from the various rights clearinghouses for playback in commercial use.

  • Network Drive/Cover Art/Music Folder Location

    Hello,
On my work PC, I have used a network drive for my iTunes music folder location. We have a 'jukebox' of sorts that multiple people can access. The connection to this drive is not so hot (i.e., it's a bit slow), but it has always been sufficient to listen to music, as the transmission rate is usually faster than the length of any given song.
Now that 7.0 & coverart has come out, the network drive is no longer viable. The coverart stutters, and accessibility is just too painful.
So, I have moved my music to a local drive & removed all the connections to the remote music.
I remember reading somewhere (although I can't remember where) that iTunes now monitors more than one music folder location for changes to the contents. This is a nice feature, but I suspect it's continuing to monitor this network drive, so that even though I moved all my music, everything remains slow.
I've done everything I can think of to try to fix this; I've uninstalled & re-installed iTunes. I've scanned the registry for instances of iTunes trying to figure out where it might store the memory of this network drive. I've deleted references to the network drive from my machine (it's not a mapped drive however; it's just a \\000.00.00.000\mp3 path). I've disconnected the network cable to see if it will 'forget'. I've deleted iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml, along with the Album Artwork folder, and rebuilt each of them. Nothing has worked.
My machine was specifically built for video and graphic editing; I am positive that this is not an issue with video drivers or memory or anything like that. It has a gig of memory, a P4 hyperthreading processor, etc. There are only currently 319 tunes in my library. Sheer volume should not be slowing me down. My 3-year-old laptop at home has half the memory and 15x as many tunes, and it works flawlessly.
So - after this longwinded explanation - I am looking for suggestions for the following:
Am I correct in the "remembering the folders" theory? Is my machine indeed continuing to ping this network drive? If so, how can I make it stop?
Alternatively, is there a procedure to completely wipe all traces of iTunes from my machine, short of re-installing XP? Even after uninstall there were many, many references to the application in my registry, along with the library files and such.
My goal is to get the performance of iTunes & coverart to a reasonable level. Right now it's running like a goat, as if I had a x386 processor with 32M of RAM.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I have resolved the problem with the slow coverflow. I had to re-install and update my nVidia driver (thought I was gonna lose the PC there for a minute...it was hairy...).
    Anyway...problem solved.
    tks for reading,
    -Mike

  • Help please! Can't sync ipod with itunes among other problems

I reset my ipod deleting all information on it. Whenever I turn it on with the button on the top left the apple is lighted for awhile and then the screen fades to black. This is all my ipod touch does. My itunes doesn't recognize my ipod touch either. I thought that once I reset the ipod it would easily sync with itunes and put all my music, videos, and apps on it. Help please.

    Hi,
Under your post is says that you are using a docking charger to sync it????? Try using the cord that came with the ipod.
Can you get into the ipod to use it or is that all it does.
If you have jailbroken your ipod, this could be the reason for the problem.
You could also try holding the home and top left (on/off) button at the same time and wait until the apple logo come up.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I sync IPod, with lots of music, to ITunes empty library?

I lost my entire ITunes library when I had to format the hard drive. Now I want to sync all the info in my iPod into this new library. I wory that the sync may go the other way and empty my IPod. When I connect the IPod to the computer it tells me that it is synced with a different library. (This must be the one that was deleted when I formatted the disk).
    Please help

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Syncing iPod with iTunes with greater file size than iPod capacity

    Hi,
My wife has a large iTunes library. It is composed of a large number of mpg files converted from CDs. Many of the songs she doesn't care to have on her iPod, they merely came with the CD.
The iTunes Library has grown so large that there are more songs than there is capacity for her iPod to hold. She likes using the auto sync feature. Is there a way for her to "mark" the songs she wants to sync and have iTunes keep, but ignore the songs she doesn't want on her iPod?
    Thank you,
    TPK
Is there a way for her to use the auto synchronization feature, yet still limit the tunes that are stored on the iPod?

Note that unchecking items will cause them to not be played in iTunes either — the preferred solution is to make a playlist for your iPod and sync only that playlist.

  • Syncing iPod with iTunes fails with error (-69) appears

When syncing my iPod with iTunes an error appears saying syn has failed to "my" iPod due to unknown error (-69). Is there a solution for this problem?

Perhaps a corrupted iPod? Why not try a restore (warning: will erase and then resync everything) and see if that clears it up?
