Syncing Apple TV to computer
Must TV shows purchased on Apple TV be synced back to my computer? How can I keep purchased content without sacrificing precious space onmy computer?
From what I understand you cannot prevent media you have downloaded from ATV from syncing back to iTunes on the computer to which your library is associated.
There is a way to save your hard drive space, but it isn't something I'd recommend. After the sync is done navigate to your iTunes music folder via finder or explorer and locate the actual file. Delete the file. The program will still be listed in your iTunes library and will still be on your ATV, but it will not play in iTunes on your computer. You'll get an error message if you try and a "!" on the entry in iTunes. The file is not taking up hard drive space, but you'll have to live with the erroneous entry in iTunes.
Again, not recommended. Better to buy a cheap external hard drive and keep your computer's iTunes library on it instead.

actually, unless you take an extra step, the first opened swf will close. if you want the 2nd to close, the initial receiving lc will send a message to sender that causes the sender to close. -
Changing computer that syncs apple tv w/out having to delete all media
I just bought a new computer and want to use the new computer to sync without having to erase and recopy everything on the apple tv, which would take days given the amount of media I have. All of the media that I have on itunes and sync with my Apple TV is located on a network drive so I'm looking for a way to just reroute the Apple TV to the new computer. Switching itunes was as simple as copying the library file onto my new computer and mapping the network drive with the same letter as my old computer. Is there an analogous way of rerouting the new apple tv to my new computer?
Be very careful doing this!! I followed the advice of apple tech support in changing computers and it erased everything on my apple tv. Lucky for me it was still on the old computer, so I re-sync it back to the old computer running xp pro and everything is back to normal. There is a conflict with vista 64 bit operating systems right now running itunes. The problem maybe the same with windows 7 64bit aswell. Right now I am syncing apple tv to the old computer, then syncing to an ipod using the old computer, then hooking up the ipod to the new computer and transfering the purchases to the new computer for now. For some reason my computer will not detect apple tv(and yes, it is set to detect apple tv in my home network). Only my old one with xp pro and my sons laptop running xp home will detect it.

Apple TV purchases - will they get wiped out by a sync to a new computer?
Ok, here's my issue: I've got an Apple TV, currently synced to an old and near-inoperable computer, through which I've bought several movies which, given the state of my old computer, only reside on the Apple TV.
I'm hoping to sync the Apple TV to my new computer which I understand will wipe out the old content on the Apple TV that was synced from the old one. I'm OK with this. But my concern is for the movies bought through the Apple TV - will these also be wiped out when I do the sync to the new computer? I'm hoping not of course.

Got impatient and went ahead and disconnected Apple TV from the old computer and synced it to my new one. All purchased movies were preserved - didn't have to do anything, Apple TV just held on to them and has now allowed me to pass them over to the new computer.

This is my first time using this forum, and I apologize if my post isn't "normal" or if my question is too long. My old acer computer had become corrupted and I had to reinstall my copy of windows. When I tried to sync a new ringtone to my iphone, which was only ever synced to this same computer, I was prompted to delete everything I had so I could install one ringtone. That does not sound ideal, and I refuse to delete everything I've put on my phone and my data to sync to itunes. There has to be another way to show my phone that this is the same computer. So I do not have to go through the hassle of doing everything again. I could not find an answer in the forums, and hope you can help me. This is pretty close to being a deal breaker for me. I'm beyond frustrated with this policy.

I figured that was what I was going to have to do in the end. I have a few games with quite a few hours invested, and I worry that I'll lose the progress I have as they do not save to the cloud. I may have to bite the bullet, and just take the plunge to resolve this. I just want a way to easily transfer my "Home Computer" for my iPhone. My laptop is years old and in need of being replaced, and it's about time to upgrade my phone. These life events piling up are making me consider switching to a friendlier OS. I'm not using this as a threat. I just hope some apple high up will read this, and realize that we need alternatives. Life happens.

Using the guide provided has done both. It has helped me and given me a fix to my current problem. Lawrence has also provided me with the last bit of information I feel is missing from wjosten's guide. That syncing will completely erase all of your data and reinstall it in one fell swoop. I was trying to add and app to my iphone and was not able to do so. It wanted updated credit information. So, I entered it and it will not accept the month of experation. I have shut the phone down, sync it to the computer to update. Will not work. What can I do to continue?

I for the first time since buying my iphone and ipods for almost three years am concedering getting rid of them as I am getting tired of this problem. I can sync anything from my computer to the iphone. I can not sync movies bought on the iphone to my computer. I have tried everything and spent days trying to trouble shoot. I literally have bought hundreds of movies off Itunes but will not buy any thing else until I can figure this problem out. I have uninstalled Itunes reinstalled, troubles shooted using the itunes trouble shooter and reset my phone and nothing works.
When I try to sync from my phone to the computer it says it can not be done because the iphone is not hooked up to the computer. I have only had these problesm since the new update not before. I have bought new cables twice to see if it helped and has not. Both my kids have Ipods, I have a Iphone and was planning on buying two Ipads for the kids for Christmas but not if I can fix this.You are correct. Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases. You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again: Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.

2 questions; how to erase "other memory" on iphone 5 and how to sync to a new computer
Apple support is failing to help my issues so I thought its best to turn to the community. OK so I've talked to Apple before about my "other memory" and I performed a soft reset on my phone and it decreased other memory by maybe a gig. A month later now its higher than it was before at over 5.6 gigs, any way how to make it as little as possible?
Also I just got a new macbook pro and I use to sync my iphone 5 to my macbook (2008), how do I make my macbook pro my primary itunes and still keep all my info on my phone? My new macbook pro itunes says its backed up, but when I plug it in it won't sync any new songs or app data to my itunes, etc.
Any help with these issues will much be appreciated!!"Other" is all of the data for all of the built in apps. If you delete its contents all of your built in app data will disappear. Some of what is contained in other:
email messages and attachments
Reminders
Calendar entries
Contacts
Text messages
MMS messages and attachments
Genius data
Music cover art
Operating system settings
Safari cache
bookmarks
Game Center status
Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. Some people suggest deleting your music on the phone. DON'T DO IT! The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it deletes cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Your Other is so large, however, that there may be corrupt data contained in it (unless you send a lot of MMS messages with large attachments). If this is the case you should restore the phone as New.

My iPod classic 7th Gen will not sync with my new computer. itunes is installed and updated.

the problem is a failure to sync with the new computer. the conditions are as follows: the new computer is a pc. it has the latest iTunes software installed. the iPod is installed properly. i'm fully recognized by my iTunes account. there is nothing lacking other than my iPod's refusal to sync with my new computer. what have i left undone? i could be suffering from a duh, but i'm not the only one. nothing in the apple world is as difficult as this one is, at least on the surface. if it were that simple an issue, no one would be having any problems with it. any more information needed can be provided by request. by the way, the computer being used has been authorized. that is a non-issue.

hardphil.I believe the IPOD (Classic) uses USB 2.0, and my new laptop uses USB 3.0. I think they are not compatable because of this. If you find a solution to this please let me know.

My wife and I both have iPhones and iPads. Can we both have access to the same iTunes Match library or do we have to have separate subscriptions? Our devices are synced to the same computer and we currently download titles from the same library. We both use separate apple id's on our devices.
You need to reconfigure your phone for use with your Apple ID. I suggest you restore yours as new then reconfigure it with your information and Apple ID. Be sure to disable Find My Phone, if it's enabled, before proceeding.

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.
