Syncing ical across multiple computers without .mac

Hi,
Is it possible to sync ical calendars across multiple computers in the same network or over the internet without .Mac? If I have a website or ftp server, can I use that instead to synce over the internet or is there an easier way? Thanks.

This is another related question.
Having at last extracted a decade of diaries from Palm Desktop as vCal (since you ask I had to go back to Classic as the app quit without writing the export file in Tiger and Leopard, even tho it is otherwise OK) I now have something I can import rather messily into iCal.
However as I have really bad internet access in the Boondocks where I live I don't want to use .Mac to sync between my iMac and iBook. Palm ran very happily from a thumb drive, but I don't see how I can do it as the powers that be seem to have made the data file invisible.
I'd like to move it to the thumb drive and have an alias on each Mac where the data should be - as I do with Palm.
Does anyone know the path, and if there is a problem doing it between Tiger and Leopard?
Cheers, Colin

  • Is there a way to sync mail across multiple computers without using .mac?

I'd like to be able to use either of my machines to check/respond to email, and have both of them be updated with both incoming messages and my replies. Is this possible outside of using a .mac account?
I'm using 10.4.6 and also the latest version of Mail.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yes, there are several people that have published the steps to set up your own .Mac service by reverse engineering the protocol and rolling their own server to provide web services to emulate .Mac.
If you are looking for a hobby, I would encourage you to try it. Assuming you are sophisticated enough to google it and find some steps you can use, it should not be that hard to set up.
Please note - I haven't looked over the licenses for all of the software involved (Mac OS and .Mac) - you might be in violation of your license term by reverse engineering parts of the system or violating copyright/patents. As long as you don't go into business or diverting income from Apple - you may well be fine by learning how they did things.
P.S. I assume you mean syncing the mail settings, not the actual contents of the mail box.

  • Sync iCal across multiple macs WITHOUT internet

Here is something for the experts out there...
I have a Mac at home, with my iCal.
I have a Mac at work, with an iCal.
How do i get these two computers to sync back and forth WITHOUT using the internet (i don't have the NET at home)...
I can sync my iPOD to my home calander, but when i get to work, it doesn't matter, because i would need my WORK computer to sync to my iPOD's calander, then i can update my work, put it BACK onto my iPOD and then do the same at home, but there doesn't seem to be this feature.. i need to be able to alter calander files and take them with me...

Interesting, never knew there was an iCloud website.  Ironically, it wouldn't open in Safari (just got a spinning progress wheel), but it opened up fine in Chrome.  :/
So, I logged into iCloud under my wife's Apple ID, clicked on the calendar icon, then clicked on those icons to the right of the two calendars shown (Home and Work), selected Private Calendar, and added my email address which is linked to my Apple ID. I hoped that would do the trick to allow me to see her calendar entries in iCal in my account, but it didn't.
Am I correct that the process outlined above should display my wife's entries onto my iCal calendar?  Or do I need to go view her calendar online somewhere instead of seeing the entries on my own iCal calendar?

  • Sync iCal across multiple user accounts

I'm trying to do what I would think would be an easy and oft-requested endeavor -- sync iCal calendars across different User accounts on my computer as well as my work computer. To illustrate, I'd like to be able to schedule an event on iCal and have it show up in my wife's calendar, which is in a separate User Account on my Mac.  Of course, I'd like to see her events as well AND see them on iCal on my work computer. Can this be done?

  • Duplicate email alarms sent when syncing iCal on multiple computers

Hi, I have iCal set up on my laptop, my work computer and my home computer and they all are syncing using .mac, which is great because I can add an event on any computer and it updates everywhere. The problem is that when I have an event that has an email alarm all three computers end up sending me a reminder. As a result my inbox looks like a plate of spam. Is there a way I can suppress email alarms from all but one of the computers?
    Thanks in advance.

I sync my iPhone with two different computers. This appears to be something new & unique for the iPhone.
My "Info" data (contacts, bookmarks, calendar, mail) comes from my iBook. My "Media" data (music, podcasts, video) comes from my desktop PC.
I don't believe you can mix the sync data beyond that. In other words, you can't sync podcasts from one computer and music from a second.
When I started doing this, I recall getting prompted to erase all data before continuing the sync in the traditional iPod method of 1 computer to 1 iPod. But hitting Cancel to that question actually continued the sync without deleting the iPhone resident non-synced data. You may have to do that on both systems (the Cancel), but now it seems automatic. The iBook just touches the Info data & the PC just touches the media data.
I also turned off 'auto-sync' in both iTunes for the iPhone. I'm not sure if that made a difference for the dual sync. I just prefer to kick off the sync manually in case I'm downloading new podcasts or just need to charge the iPhone and don't want to go through a sync at that moment.

  • Sync iCal across two computers?

    Hi there -
I just bought a router, and it's working beautifully. I was wondering if it is possible to sync my iCal from my home desktop iMac to my iBook (without using .Mac or a palm device) through my router?

As indicated above, the solution is to use SyncTogether from Mark/Space.
You should never attempt to use a Palm device as a data 'carrier' to synchronize data, as severe record corruption will result.
The synchronization framework, including clients like the Address Book, iCal, iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit, as well as replacements for it like the Missing Sync for Palm OS and supplemental sync-aware applications like Entourage, Transmit and Yojimbo are not intended to support such procedures. You need to use a dedicated tool like SyncTogether or .Mac Sync to achieve what you want.

  • Sync iCal between 2 computers - NO .MAC

I am trying to have the same calendar entries on my 2 computers. First one is iMac PPC G5 Tiger, second is new MacBook with leopard. I have tried using my iPhone as the conduit with no luck, and also exporting the calendar and then importing it into the new computer.
Most everything transfers via export, but there are mistakes (example: a recurring entry ends on the 8th - and says so in it's details, but it shows up as ending on the 7th!).
Is there a way for both calendars to be the exact same - and to LOOK the same, by using the iPhone OR exporting? Am I missing something? I do not have a .MAC account - and would prefer not to get one.
    Thanks

The "ease of use" computer company DOES provide a solution to this issue.
    It's called ".mac".
Apple has invested a lot of time, effort, and money into making .mac work as well as it does. And like all publicly held corporations, their #1 responsibility is to turn a profit. I can't see them throwing away a source of revenue because some people don't want to pay for the service.
You say you bought a new laptop recently. (Congratulations, by the way.) Didn't they offer you a discount on .mac at the time at the time you bought the machine? It's normally $99/yr, but when I bought my new MacBook Pro earlier this week they offered me a .mac box (the code works for a new membership or for a renewal) for $69, if I bought it at the same time as the machine.
Another option might be to run a CalDAV server yourself, keep your appointments on the server, and have iCal on both machines subscribe to the same set of calendars. Apple has released "iCal Server" as open source, there's nothing to stop you from running on your own web server.

  • Newbie question about setting up iTunes to sync across multiple computers

    Hi,
Right now I am using iTunes primarily for listening to streaming radio. However in about 2-3 weeks after I move, I am considering importing all my CDs into iTunes.
So my question is this. What can I do before I start that will make my life easier for syncing my iTunes across multiple computers.
I don't expect the computers to connect to each via internet but I do have a 4 GB flash disk and 230 GB firewire drive that could be used. And since one of the computers is MacBook Pro, I could use it in target mode I think.
    Thanks.

Authorization only applies to computers. When you update a device any protected content on the device for which the library is not authorised will be removed. Otherwise no attempt is made to remove content that was added by a now deauthorised library.
There is a separate scheme permitting up to 10 devices (computers, iPhones, iPad or iPod touches) to be registered for automatic downloads of your purchases with a different mechanism for deregistering devices.
Once you have a file on your computer you can physically copy it to any other computer in the same way that you would copy any other file like a Word document, put it on a disk, email it if not too large, burn it to DVD, stick it on an external hard drive or move it over a network. You can use Get Info. To tell you where it is now and you can drop it into the library at the other end.
The user tip shows how to backup the whole library and then update that backup efficiently. Such a backup to a portable drive also provides a possible tool for transporting any content to another computer.

  • Now that iCloud has done away with galleries, how can we share as I did with MobileMe? How can we sync non-Apple email accounts across multiple computers?

Now that iCloud has done away with galleries, how can we share as I did with MobileMe? How can we sync non-Apple email accounts across multiple computers?

You will need to find a third party solution for online storage in order to share things like photos with others. Some popular solutions to this are dropbox and sugarsync.
You cannot sync non-iCloud email accounts across your iOS devices and computers unless they are IMAP accounts like iCloud. If they are IMAP accounts, you will do it in the same way as you have always done.

  • Manually controlling music across multiple computers

I've seen a lot of similar posts about this and I find it quite frustrating that I was able to manually control my music with my 30GB ipod across multiple computers but my iphone locks me down to just one computer.
Even if I decide to use the 'manual' option it just doesn't let me add music to my iphone from multiple computers. I am constantly directed to erase and re-sync with the new computer. It's not a solution I like considering what I can do with my older ipod.
The only solution I found so far was to jailbreak the iphone but I refuse to go that path. I read a few reasons Apple released as to why it was limited and find it very silly for lack of a better word.
Anyone experience the same frustration and have a solution? Or know if there is an update to resolve this any time soon?
    Thanks!

    One thing that might help.
The iphone will only sync music and video content from one computer at a time.
If you want to sync music or video content from a second computer, itunes will remove what the first computer put on the iphone.
One thing you can do though, is combine our itunes library onto one computer.
    This article might help out.

  • What is the best workflow for Final Cut Pro X across multiple computers?

I travel on a team that is in a different location every week, so all of our video editing has to be fairly moble. We have 3 macbook pros and would like to use final cut X on all of them. What would be the best workflow for us all to work on the same project and sync it across the computers? (eg, one of us editing the footage, one editing the sound, one working on visual effects?)

My first question would be how well 5.1 would work with SL. People have reported problems.
As far as cameras are concerned, I would guess most any tape-based camera would work and so much depends on the kind of projects you work on that I wouldn't want to start guessing at your needs.
If you want broad access to tapeless and advanced formats try to locate and purchase an upgrade disk to 6 or 7.
    Good luck.

  • Syncing ical across devices

Hi, I've recently started using the calendar application on iPad and iPhone, but noticed it hasn't automatically synced to my MacBook Pro. I looked at MobileMe but saw there was a charge for this service. Is there another way I can sync iCal across all my devices, please?
    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi,
Check your calendar where you are adding the event belongs to the MobileMe Calendar, otherwise will not synchronize.

  • Can't sync ical across two users on the same Mac

I hope I can get some help.
My wife and I had our ical's sync'd when we had a .mac account. My .mac account expired and we upgraded to Mobileme. Since then we have not been able to sync our icals on the same mac.
I spent an hour with chatting with apple mobileme tech support to no avail.
Any suggestions or solution would be great.

Thanks for your reply, but this article is telling me to do exactly what I already tried.  I just get the message: "The folder “Drop Box” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
