Syncing two computers via network session

hi
this topic started out in another thread, really should have it's own though...
so i want to sync two computers via a "network session".
one is a G4 (dual 800 running logic pro 7.2.2) the other is my macbook pro running logic pro 6.4.2.
basically all i am using the macbook for is to playback a quicktime movie...
now i have successfully got the network session going in "Audio Midi Setup", but for the life of me can't get the logic on the macbook pro to slave up. even though mtc is set up and the logic 7.2.2 is set up to send mtc via the network session.
if anyone has any ideas...please feel free...
cheers, warner

really?
cool.
have been researching this a little bit (not that i have the time - just got curious).
there are a couple of relaly interesting apps out there that can take MTC and play video. one in particular was very interesting....check this out:

  • Why can't apple let us sync two computers over bluetooth?

I am extremely annoyed that mac won't let you sync two computers via bluetooth, when you can easily do it with phones and pdas. It seems to me that it takes the exact same technology to do so, and the only reason mac does not let you sync two computers is that they want to force you to pay $100 for a .mac account. Very Microsoft-like of them. Apple advertises that you can do this function as part of the OSX, but fails to mention it requires additional cost. I hope they provide this in the future.
I've heard a new program, spanning sync, may work, but that is just for your calendar.

    1) Apple always advertised its computer to computer sync'ing as ".Mac sync" (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/dotmacsync/) so I don't see where they "fail to mention it requires .mac" or put that "in the small print no one reads"
    2) Peer-to-peer sync'ing leverages many conceptual problems that sync'ing with a central server does not have. It takes a lot of effort to have proper, reliable, secure, yet simple-to-use peer-to-peer sync'ing. It becomes even worse when more than 2 peers are involved, and becomes a total nightmare when there can be cycles in the sync'ing swarm. Apple took the simpler, reliable approach. Of course, Apple can put money to provide some peer-to-peer solution but it's likely not worth the money yet for Apple.
    3) Third parties can provide peer-to-peer sync'ing in no time (if it were that simple) since Tiger, thanks to Sync Services... yet there isn't many solutions out-there... however, maybe you should take a look on VersionTracker. You might find what you want:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/index.shtml
Remember... sync'ing is never that simple.

  • Can I sync IPhoto albums between two computers via ICloud?

I have some pictures on my MacBook Pro, and some on my desktop.  Other than offloading to a hard drive and trying to duplicate the two drives, is there a way to create albums and have them show up on both computers via the cloud??

No you cannot sync an iPhoto library between two macs. If you do you will corrupt the iPhoto Library file. iPhoto is a consumer level app, and this feature is not supported.
What you can do is share the photos but not the library. Each machine will need to have it's own library file.
The easiest way to do it this is to enable sharing (in the iPhoto Preferences) on both machines (one sharing the library, the other looking for the share). When you do this the shared library will appear in the Source (or left-hand) pane and pics can be dragged from that to the library in the other machine.

  • How to sync two computers (or more) without iCloud?

i need to sync (or copy) iCal, Notes, Remembers, Adress Book between two computers working on Mountain Lion. How can i do without using iCloud or other cloud?

You can share files via Airdrop. Not sure if that's what you're really looking for pertaining to a way within the Mac OS.

  • Sync two computers with one documents folder?

This is a question re: a imac and a powerbook.
I am looking for a product that can update the most recently edited files in my documents folder on both computers automatically...
Often, I use the laptop remotely and need updates to the desk top and vise versa so that the folder being duplicated is a mirror on each machine...
Is this a possibility with some product currently on the market, two computers one set of folders?
Optimally I would like it to happen automaticall but a wired version would be OK too...
When machines are tethered the more recent folders update on either machine.

    Hi Elin,
Here's a Dropbox tutorial which keeps two Macs synced: http://thenextweb.com/apps/2011/09/21/how-to-use-dropbox-to-sync-your-documents- folder-between-macs-for-free/
What's not clear is if it will allow you to disconnect the two Macs and then sync after reconnecting them.
iCloud is something else to consider.

  • Best method to synch addy book from two computers not networked together?

I have two Macs, un-networked, and two diff. operating systems. 10.2.8 and 10.3.9. What is the best way to synch em' up on a regular basis? Thanks.

first let me say i dont know if there are any compatability issues with address book in 10.2 and 10.3. I suspect there may be. If not…
get a .mac account - which of course costs
You could alternatively buy some syncing software ( unfortunately there doesnt seem to be any freeware syncing options) and use sometype of transfer medium (usb thumb drive?)

  • HT1495 can you sync two computers to one ipad?

We just got an ipad for traveling and have two home computers, mine and my husbands. Can we synd them both to the ipad for our trip? Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks.

No you cannot sync with two computers. "Sync" being the key word. You can use an iPad with multiple computers for the purposes of transferring music.
You can read more about it here.

  • I want to sync all my mailboxes and preferences between two computers via iCloud

I have created a folders under iCloud ~/Library/Mobile Documents called My iCloud Documents and it works like a charm to sync non-icloud app docs between my iMac & MBP.  What I did was creat this folder on both computers and add it to my Favorites in the left column of my finder window, on both computers.  Now I can simply save to it or drag & drop docs/files to have access on both.
Note: you should add Mobile Documents folder to your side bar for easy access by creating an alias of Mobile Documents folder and draging it over to the sidebar.  Once you have done this you can delete the alias from the ~/Library folder
I would like my MBP to mirror my iMac with my Mail.app, specificly all my non-icloud mail boxes and folders and also the preferences...
    On My iMac:
    1) duplicate the files/folders so I have a backup on the iMac
    2) create aliases of the original files/folders and leave in place
    3) move the copied files/folders to my newly created ~/LibraryMobile Documents/My iCloud Documents/Synced Mail Stuff
    4) rename the files/folders so I dont overwrite them on the MBP
    5) create aliases of the files/folders that are now syncing on the MBP in the  ~/LibraryMobile Documents/My iCloud Documents/Synced Mail Stuff
    6) create the aliases and move them to the appropriate location on the MBP
This is where I am stuck, if there is anything in the files or folders on the MBP that I need... how would I then be able to access it for syincing?
I guess I can export and then import once I complete my syncing...
Any help would be great on this matters!
    -Alfeo

This does not work.  I tried to move the folders to the iCloud folder leaving the Alias, but the system only recreated the mailboxes in the proper place.  Still looking for help on how to achieve this task.

  • Sharing Catalog Between Two Computers on Network PSE7

We have several computers connected to a network. Our PSE7 catalog and all picture files are stored on an external hard drive connected to one of the computers. We load photos to the external hard drive from two separate computers. When we open the catalog file through PSE7 on each computer, we only see the photos uploaded from the individual computer, not from both. We also don't get a prompt that new files/photos are avaialble for importing. Our question is how can two users on two separate computers share the same catalog, add new photos, and edit existing photos and have these changes viewed by the other computers.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Jonathan,
    > When we open the catalog file through PSE7 on each computer, we only see the photos uploaded from the individual computer, not from both.
It sounds like each computer in fact has a different catalog. You can verify the catalog locations by doing Help > System Info.
    >Our question is how can two users on two separate computers share the same catalog, add new photos, and edit existing photos and have these changes viewed by the other computers.
While this can be done, it can be tricky and I recommend you dont undertake it unless youre comfortable and knowledgable about administering Windows networking.
First, if you have a wireless network, youll likely be disappointed with the performance of PSE (even with a new n network). And with a wired network, you may still get poor performance like most database applications, PSE is very sensitive to the speed of the network and the network file service.
Second, in your situation, youll have to ensure that both instances of PSE refer to the external drive via a mapped network drive. Call the computer with the external drive C1, and call the other computer C2. Suppose the external drive on C1 is assigned the drive letter F, and the folder containing your catalog and photos is called F:\Photos.
Next, on C1 use Windows Explorer to share F:\Photos as \\C1\Photos.
    Then on
both C1 and C2, map \\C1\Photos to a network drive. You dont have to choose the same drive letter on both computers for that network drive, but it would help avoid confusion. Suppose youve mapped \\C1\Photos to Z on both computers.
Now, create a new catalog on Z: and import photos into it. On C1, be sure to always refer to the external drive using the drive letter Z: (the network drive), not F:. Otherwise, youll end up with references to F: in the catalog that C2 wont understand.

  • Syncing two computers to play music at the same time

    hi!
i have two imacs in my house one upstairs and one downstairs is there a way to sync them together with bluetooth so that if i play music it comes out through the speakers on both computers?

Temporarily, move the AirPort Express to the same room as the Time Capsule and power it up for a few minutes.
Then, hold in the reset button on the Express for 10-12 second and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
I have seen some bugs already with OS X 10.9.3, so we will have to see what happens on your end.
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network and then suggest that the Express will be configured to "extend" the Time Capsule wireless network.
Enter a device name that you want to use to identify the Expess and clck Next
The utility will set up everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete and you see a green light on the Expess, click Done.
Now move the Express to a location where it can pick up a strong signal from the Time Capsule. It should be no more than half way to two thirds the distance between the Time Capsule and upstairs location where you want more coverage.  You may need to experiment a bit with the location of the Express for best results.

  • How to print to two printers via network?

    Hi,
I just moved into a new house with ethernet cabling throughout. I'd love to print to my two printers (HP LaserJet 1012 and a Canon iP3600) via the network without using a computer. However, I can't figure out how to do it.
    So far, I've tried:
Attaching a USB hub to my 1st generation Airport Extreme. Didn't work. Don't think they support hubs. I can print to either printer if individually hooked up, just not via the hub.
A D-Link D-301U USB ethernet print server. Misread the specs. Thought this came with two USB ports. Tried each printer individually, but couldn't figure out how to hook it up. Failed utterly with a USB hub attached.
The issue is NOT the network connection. No problems plugging my computer directly into the ethernet on the wall and getting great connectivity.
Any suggestions how to do this? I've heard that the latest Airport Extremes support printing through a USB hub...
    Thanks in advance.

    Next issue -
The drivers provided by HP and Canon for those printers are USB-Only! You will have to use third-party drivers for each, to use the standard network print protocols. Apple has included one set of third-party drivers, Gutenprint, in OS X. To see if your printers are supported by the latest Gutenprint version, check here:

  • Syncing two computers with same short name

Hi folks, esp. Dancing Brook ,
So, I have a computer at work, a laptop at home, and a Palm PDA. Since both computers are mine, they have the same short name. I only make iCal entries on my work computer (plus anything that I enter in my PDA, of course), but like to have the latest iCal data on my laptop too. Here's my question:
I only have iCal on my laptop for the convenience and as an extra backup. Since, however, it shares the same short name as my work computer, do I have to worry about sync issues? E.g., if my laptop iCal has old data, could it overwrite the new data if I sync it after I sync my work computer?
I've read that changing the short name of your computer isn't a great idea, FWIW.
    Thanks,
    PL

Don't know. Wouldn't think it would be a problem as it is too likely to happen (ie same name on both computers). But you could setup a new account with a new name on the laptop if you don't want to experiment. I would just backup and experiment, or set up two new users, one on each computer along with a trial .Mac account.
