Synful orchestra/versus sample morphing.

just did some work with synful orch. what a great idea. also heard demo of garritan stradivari vln with sample morphing - equally excellent. eric at synful is most helpful. the new version of synful to be release mid year promises to be the killer for orchestral music on computer. a combination of the two(above) techniques would be very productive. manufacturers need to keep sample/HDD real estate to a minimum so everyone can use these tools, no matter what their set-up. what do you think?
G4 450DP   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   digidesign, motu, apogee

eric is improving synful all the time. new version out by mid year which i will buy. yes, this is the future. this and morphing of samples (see garritan). the bs involved with big/expensive sample libraries should be a thing of the past very soon. DJR

  • Getting sample expessions together

i would like to build an orchestra where each section and solo instument contains all the different playing methods or types of expression. to do this i'm having to import lots of orchestra / instrument sample c.d's.
i don't want 14 orchestras with the same things repeated, rather i want to add new playing techniques or expressions as i find them without having to hand sort all the duplications with each new import. the end goal is of course to have an orchestra as near to a live one as possible, whilst keeping the number of files in such a way, that stops them becoming clumsy and hard to use.
At the moment I'm starting off with files in all sorts of formats but ending up with exs voices. The manual mentions loading sampler instruments in the exs24 instrument editor but i just don't seem to be getting it I wish they would use writers to write the book. lol.
    all help appreciated yours, harp_man

Hmm, okay. So it tells you the volume where the files are located and you plug in that volume.
In the lower half of the window, the volume should appear and you should be able to navigate to the image file.
When you click on that file the Reconnect and Reconnect All buttons should become active at the bottom of the window.
Is that not how it is working for you?

  • ACE 4710: Find out the response time of a real server

    Hi to everyone,
I have a couple of ACE 4710 and I need to find out what is the response time of a real server.
Is there a way for this?
    Thank you for any answer!
      giorgio romano

    Hi,
Kindly add the following line in your serverfarm configuration:
    predictor response syn-to-synack
Suppose your serverfarm looks like this:
    serverfarm host AAA_FARM
    predictor response syn-to-synack
    probe HTTP_PROBE
    probe TCP9001_PROBE
    rserver SC106
    inservice
    rserver SC107
    inservice
    rserver SC108
    inservice
    rserver SC109
    inservice
    rserver SC110
    inservice
    rserver SC111
    inservice
    rserver SC112
    inservice
    rserver SC113
    inservice
    rserver SC114
    inservice
    rserver SC120
    inservice
    rserver SC131
    inservice
And then use the following command to see the average response time from your rserver as follows:
    ACE1/prod# show serverfarm AAA_FARM detail
    serverfarm     : AAA_FARM, type: HOST
    total rservers : 11

    Configuring the Application Response Predictor
To instruct the ACE to select the server with the lowest average response time for the specified response-time measurement based on the current connection count and server weight (if configured), use the predictor response command in server farm host or redirect configuration mode. This predictor is considered adaptive because the ACE continuously provides feedback to the load-balancing algorithm based on the behavior of the real server.
To select the appropriate server, the ACE measures the absolute response time for each server in the server farm and averages the result over a specified number of samples (if configured). With the default weight connection option configured, the ACE also takes into account the server's average response time and current connection count. This calculation results in a connection distribution that is proportional to the average response time of the server.
The syntax of this command is as follows:
    predictor response {app-req-to-resp | syn-to-close | syn-to-synack}[samples number]
The keywords and arguments are as follows:
•app-request-to-resp—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends an HTTP request to a server to the time that the ACE receives a response from the server for that request.
•syn-to-close—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives a CLOSE from the server.
•syn-to-synack—Measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives the SYN-ACK from the server.
•samples number—(Optional) Specifies the number of samples over which you want to average the results of the response time measurement. Enter an integer from 1 to 16 in powers of 2. Valid values are 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. The default is 8.
For example, to configure the response predictor to load balance a request based on the response time from when the ACE sends an HTTP request to a server to when the ACE receives a response back from the server and average the results over four samples, enter:
    host1/Admin(config)# serverfarm SFARM1
    host1/Admin(config-sfarm-host)# predictor response app-req-to-resp
    samples 4
To reset the predictor method to the default of round-robin, enter:
    host1/Admin(config-sfarm-host)# no predictor
To configure an additional parameter to take into account the current connection count of the servers in a server farm, use the weight connection command in server farm host predictor configuration mode. By default, this command is enabled. The syntax of this command is as follows:
    weight connection
    For example, enter:
    host1/Admin(config)# serverfarm SF1
    host1/Admin(config-sfarm-host)# predictor response app-request-to-resp
    samples 4
    host1/Admin(config-sfarm-host-predictor)# weight connection
To remove the current connection count from the calculation of the average server response time, enter:
    host1/Admin(config-sfarm-host-predictor)# no weight connection
You can use threshold milliseconds parameter which is optional Specifies the required minimum average response time for a server. If the server response time is greater than the specified threshold value, the ACE removes the server from the load-balancing decision process (takes the server out of service).
Enter an integer from 1 to 300000 milliseconds (5 minutes). The default is no threshold (servers are not taken out of service).
In case if you have measures the response time from  when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives a CLOSE from the server  use syn-to-close      (already discussed previously)
If you have to measures the response time from when the ACE sends a TCP SYN to a server to the time that the ACE receives the SYN-ACK from the server use syn-to-synack   (already discussed previously)
SAMPLES parameter is optional and  specifies the number of samples that you want to average from the results of the response time measurement and response time is used to select the server with the lowest response time for the requested response-time measurement. If you do not specify a response-time measurement method, the ACE uses the HTTP app-req-to-response method.
Whenever a server's load reaches zero, by default, the ACE uses the autoadjust feature to assign a maximum load value of 16000 to that server to prevent it from being flooded with new incoming connections. The ACE periodically adjusts this load value based on feedback from the server's SNMP probe and other configured options.
Using the least-loaded predictor with the configured server weight and the current connection count option enabled, the ACE calculates the final load of a real server as follows:
final load = weighted load × static weight × current connection count
    where:
•weighted load is the load reported by the SNMP probe
•static weight is the configured weight of the real server
•current connection count is the total number of active connections to the real server
The ACE recalculates the final load whenever the connection count changes, provided that the (config-sfarm-host-predictor) weight connection command is configured. If the (config-sfarm-host-predictor) weight connection command is not configured, the ACE updates the final load when the next load update arrives from the SNMP probe.
If two servers have the same lowest load (either zero or nonzero), the ACE load balances the connections between the two servers in a round-robin manner.

  • AU plugin not working?

I can't seem to get to 3rd party plugins in Logic Express 8. I've intalled Synful Orchestra (demo AU version 2.4.4) - It shows up in the Audio Units Manager (and passes scan test), but doesn't show up in mixer insert or library (not really sure where it should show up).
    Can anyone help?

In the inspector left-hand column click on above where it says "out 1-2". Scroll down to Au-Instruments. It should show up there under the manufacturer's name. Non-Logic Au instruments do not show up in the Library though sometimes their instrument settings do. It seems to depend on the instrument.

  • "No Mac Can Handle" professional Orchestral sample libraries?

    Hi,
What I do: Film / TV / Ensemble composer
Sample Libraries I use: As my normal palate; Symphonic Choirs, LA Scoring Strings, Vienna Woodwinds, Project Sam Orchestral Brass, Storm Drum 2. Plus others for colour.  I WILL be expanding this in the future.
What I want: A system that will allow me to work with all these plugins (in Logic Studio), without sticking up 'Failed to process data in time' or any other errors! I need it to WORK, so I can edit and get on with composing! My current system can't even handle Symphonic Choirs, or LA Scoring Strings on their OWN!
I'm using a mix of high quality sound libraries, and I'm doing orchestral scoring, so I need something that can run ALL the sound libraries at once without falling over!
I was thinking of buying this iMac:
    2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
    16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB GDDR5
Someone else suggested I skip that and go for a MacPro.
Since then, on another forum I've been advised that even people running 8 Core systems have them fall over due to CPU usage spiking to 100% when JUST using LA Scoring Strings (Nothing else)!!! Obviously I'm going to be putting my system under alot more strain then that.
Some people have suggested using PC Slaves as this is apparently 'the only way' to do it without it falling over - but obviously I don't want to do that as all my software is geared for mac, and I love the operating ease!
I don't understand how the 'top' composers do it, there doesn't seem to be a system built that can handle this stuff.
HELP ME FELLOW MAC COMPOSERS - you're my only hope! Please specify what sample libraries you are using concurrently (so I can get an idea that we're trying to do the same thing), or how you have managed it!
Any help gratefully appreciated. What do I buy?!

As for your error message, it appears to be an incomplete entry from your logfile of what happened. Open your Console application and see if it has any more details such as USB, Memory, CPU, Firewire, or 80211, or ATAPI, etc... The standards mentioned in your logfile of the crash will give you some indication where the problem is. Is your data backed up? How full is your hard drive? Can you reproduce the error in a second admin account with no system modifications running?

  • What Orchestral samples for EXS?

I am looking for a decent but simple set of orchestral samples to use for EXS to complement the existing set supplied in the LPX download. I do not intend to spend a lot of money on a complicated item of software, I already have EWQSO andfind it is too power hungry and slow to use, which inhibits the creative process. I do not want to use Kontakt, and ralise this probably limits what is available. However it would be intersting to know what others are using for EXS ?

Unfortunately the range of such orchestral Libs for EXS24 is extremely limited and basically non existant.......
Most musicians creating Orchestral Mockups in a DAW use Kontakt and any of the excellent 3rd party Libraries available... (Spitfire Audio, CineSamples, LASS etc) and/or Vienna Symphonic Libraries...
The reality is... If you don't spend the money on the right libs.. and you dont put the effort into learning/using them...  then you probably won't get the results or work flow you wish.....
However, depending on the quality of samples you need, some people use Garritan's low price Orchestral sample library.... when they cannot afford to take the Kontakt/VSL route...
    http://www.garritan.com/products/personal-orchestra-4/
.Note: EWQL Play Libs do tend to be somewhat unstable and power hungry under OS X as you have found... but can be utilized if you resort to bouncing/freezing tracks... when composing.

  • Most Authentic Orchestra Sampler

I am somwhat new to Logic. I'm scoring a film and don't have the time or budget for a real orchestra. However, I would like to invest in a $500-$700 range orchestra sampler. What's the best out there and what are some tips for making it sound real (as in best space designer setting etc.)

Congrats on your film score opportunity!
Yours is a hard question to answer because you haven't mentioned what style your score is going to be. Overall, are you looking for a big sound or an intimate sound? Those kinds of things... And every orchestral library will have its strengths and weaknesses.
If you want to get by on the cheap, get Garritan Personal Orchestra. $249. It's got its own learning curve (stock programs aren't velocity sensitive to volume -- you have to ride the mod wheel to control dynamics) but IMO you're not going to achieve the huge, glorious "Hollywood" string or brass ensembles from that collection.
Haven't tried it, but there's the MOTU symphonic instrument as well.
Another way to go would be get some Akai-based orchestral CD-ROMs (these can be translated into EXS24 format -- without the need for additional conversion software). Same goes for Gigasampler (to a limited extent). Some of these CD-ROMs are relatively inexpensive. So right off the bat you have the Peter Seidlaczek stuff, Kirk Hunter, and other string libraries to choose from.

  • Orchestral Samples

I'm going to be running Logic Studio 8 on a new Macbook (after tomorrow), both for live use (using Mainstage) and recording/writing.
I'd like to get a relatively inexpensive orchestral sample library to get me started, and I've been doing a lot of research recently, finally deciding on either Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO - £99) or Vienna Symphony Special Edition (the cut-down version, £230). Some say they prefer GPO, others Vienna SE.
My main requirements are very thick, realistic-sounding and lush ensemble strings, with a couple of articulations (legato, staccato, portamentos between notes, ideally through performance rather than having to be dialled in from a controller). I'd like to "play" these instruments using a variety of controls like velocity to trigger the different layers, modulation to control vibrate, expression pedal etc., rather than editing afterwards. I'd ideally like them fairly dry, so that I can put my own reverb on afterwards. Other good instruments like horn/flute etc. would also be appreciated, along with a good palette of other sounds.
The strings will be used for both contemporary stuff like RnB/pop/electronic, and more traditionally in film scores etc.
I'll be getting the Garritan Stradivari solo violin as well, as it sounds amazing.
So, which should I go for - the Vienna SE Standard (which has less instruments and articulations I believe, but people seem to rate its raw sound quality), or Garritan, which some people also seem to rate for its playability and ease of use.
    TIA.

This is a big area in some ways... you're asking for a lot from the low range price band of orchestral sampling. Yes, VSL SE will do many of the articulations you want, but you may need the extended edition to be sure... or you may actually be wanting the full editions of individual sections for some of these articulations (which is big bucks). So yes, you may find gaps... but without spending thousands, thats probably going to happen (without compromising quality).
The Kirk Hunter set doesn't seem to have too much info about articulations, and I certainly don't know but I would compare this carefully before making the decision. Also, a lot of this comes down to very thorough programming at the end of the day to make things convincing. If you've not done this type of thing before, be prepared - its going to take a long time with ANY orchestral set to make it sound right. And thats also about learning how to arrange properly - not writing in a way which is unnatural/unrealistic etc.
At the end of the day, listening to audio demos and others advice doesn't always help... its when you boot it up for the first time and you begin to get a sense of what it does that makes the difference. Unfortunately you can't trial this stuff. How many times have we brought sample CD's in the past based on demos, got them home and gone... "oh, this doesn't sound like it did on the demo..." All I know is I've not been disappointed by VSL SE (and I've been disappointed with a fair few things).
I wouldn't be too carried away by Kirk Hunters presence either... you can still speak to Gary Garritan on that side of things, it doesn't mean the products any good (not dissing Garritan, but it doesn't cut it anymore). As for 10.5.1 - I think its fine (I'm running 10.4.11 on my G5), but check with Time and Space who distribute them (in the UK). They're very helpful as are the Vienna team in Austria who do it well over Email.
    Choose wisely... and good luck.

  • Goofed my sample rates, now audio won't sync 44.1kH versus 48kH

We recorded the audio for our project using a Zoom box that had the sample rate set at 44.1kH. I opened the files in Soundtrack and diced them up, exported them and then processed them in iZotope's RX.
They are now 48kHz, and of course the conversion from 44.1 has thrown off the speed of things. Can't Synchronize Clips in Final Cut.
Is there any quick fix for this?  I don't want to have to go back to the beginning since the editing and processing steps mentioned above were very time consuming.

When and how did they become 48K?
My guess is that at least some of your work will need to be re-done depending on when you did the conversion to 48. If you did all PRE-video audio work at 44.1 and then exported the result as 48 you should be ok.
They were 44.1 going in to Soundtrack. When Sound track exported the clips, they were saved as 48k .aiff files. From there I went into RX, and then to Final Cut.
Over the course of a 15 minute clip, the drift isn't huge, but it seems perceptible.  Fortunatly there are no shots that last that long until cutting away to another camera angle.  I guess that worst case scenerio, I can manually nudge things if need be.
Thanks for the help so far everone. Any other suggestions are welcome.

  • 44.1 versus 48KHz sample rates

Since manufactured CDs are 16-bit, 44.1 KHz, is it better to record tracks in that format? It looks like STP defaults to 24-bit. Is it better to use the higher sample rate as well? 48KHz?, or should it be even higher than that?

Hi Bob. Let me see if I can remember what I learned way back in my college physics class. Keep in mind there are almost as many ill-informed opinions as there are people who record digital audio. (Oh! Dig!)
Some of that stuff sounds silly to me. Generally it's wise to use the best quality that's available to you unless you have space or bandwidth constraints. Saying you should do all your recording at 16/44.1 because it's ultimately going to end up on a CD is like saying you should shoot all your digital camera pictures at 320x200 because it's ultimately going to end up on a web page. Shooting pictures at higher resolution allows you more flexibility when editing them down for the web site, right? And audio is no different.
Here's some basics, explained in pictures:
    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?doc_id=88273&g=home&src=3SOSWXXA
You can find more stuff like that (and endless hand waving and opinons) if you google "Bit Depth Sample Rate Physics".
    Bit Depth:
Imagine in some simple world your recording software could sample waves that had amplitudes between -1 and 1. With 16 bit samples, you can record 65,536 discrete levels. (You might define a sample value of 0 to be -1 and 65,535 to be 1.) At 24 bit, you can record 16,777,216 discrete levels. The resulting representation of the wave you record will be far more accurate.
    Sample Rate:
This comes down to Nyquist Frequency. The idea is that you can only record frequencies up to exactly half of your sample rate. That doesn't mean you can get a good or accurate recording of those highest frequencies, though. The higher your sample rate, the more accurate picture you can get of those higher frequencies.
This is important for recording and playback, but it's even MORE important when you later go to combine this recording with other recordings. Mixing signals, the mathematical results of processing with effects, etc. All those things will give you better results if you give them higher resolution going in.
Combining 16 low resolution tracks will give you a much worse result that combining 16 high resolution tracks and then down-converting the result. The combination of the 16 high resolution tracks will be a much more accurate representation, right?
That said, there are certainly diminishing returns. 24 bit/96kHz can give you great results, but will take up more disk space and processing bandwidth than 24/48. If you're not using superb mics and preamps, the improvement might not justify the difference. You might consider trying some experiments to see if you can detect differences yourself.
