System hangs with radeon card and vgaswitcheroo

I have an HP Envy 17-3200 with an integrated HD4000 (i915) and an ATI M7850 (radeon).  These modules are both included in the kernel via mkinitcpio.  I am using systemd but have enabled the rc-local service to run at boot (rc.local is run).  This turns off the discrete card via vgaswitcheroo.  Given this configuration, the system boots normally into gdm.  However, when I attempt to switch graphics cards via:
$ echo DDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
$ sudo systemctl restart gdm.service
The system hangs (I have to force a reset).  This happens regardless of whether I echo OFF into vgaswitcheroo.  This does not happen if I restart gdm without switching cards.
I know the radeon driver is loaded and associated with my card as:
$ lspci -k
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1853
Kernel driver in use: i915
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 6827 (rev ff)
Kernel driver in use: radeon
I'm not even sure of what log to look in to narrow down the problem.
NOTE:  This seems to be related to this post.  That problem was at boot time and mine was not, though.  In addition, no one replied to that post, so I thought I might make a new one.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37528
I am not 100% sure, but I think that is the answer to your question.  Not very satisfying, but I have the same problem.  It's impossible to get it working.
Maybe Wayland will solve the issue, someday... when we've already bought new laptops... which by that time won't be supported by Wayland. ;-)

  • FOR ALL CANTERWOOD, SPRINGDALE & GRANITE BAY BOARDS WITH RADEON CARDS

There is a known issue with radeon cards and these mobo.
    You have 2 choices:
    1. Disable Fast write and 8x.
    2. You can uninstall SMARTGART, Click HERE for uninstall software.
This solves the Radeon 9500 9700 & 9800 series probs with these board.
    Good Luck to all

    JeffPH!
I already asked on couple threads, that how the FSB/DDR speeds are related together?
As you can check at my signature I've a P4 2.4B cpu and 2x512Mb PC3000 (DDR370) Kingston HyperX ram. I'm thinking on replacement of the ram to 2x512Mb of PC3500 Kingston HyperX to have the speed-advantage of dual chanel DDR400 and
to have some extra speed in reserve for OC.
I don't know if this change is fine or not.
I heard that dual chanel 400 can be used only with P4 C cpu. Is that so?
At this moment my DDR rated to 370 so is tat mean the fsb can be 185Mhz maximum. Is it right? Or is the mem-speed and fsb speed asynchronous?
My other problem is that my windows crashing in 3D when my 9500pro has 8x agp and fast write enabled.
It's working fine with 4x and no fast write. I tried with Smartgart uninstalled, tried with catalyst 3.4.
How can I test what is wrong? or what can cause this crash?
Please take 3 minutes and reply to me! I would appreciate that!

IBM OS ISSUE: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD
    ==================================================
    PURPOSE
이 문서는 IBM AIX5L OS 상에서 Arch Process가 online redo log
를 release하지 못하고 OS의 kill 명령으로 kill조차 되지 않을 경우
    조치 방법이다.
    Problem Description
이 문서는 다음 OS 정보와 Oracle version인 경우에 해당한다.
Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 9.2.0.5.0
Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 8.1.7.4.0
    AIX5L Based Systems (64-bit) or (32-bit)
문제 발생 당시의 증상은 다음과 같다.
    - arch-process doesn't release redolog files
    - arch-process doesn't die after database shutdown
    - arch-process can't be killed

IBM OS issue: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD.
    Workaround
    none
    Solution Description
    OS AIX5L ML4.0(5.2.0.40)의 bos.up / bos.mp / bos.mp64 fileset level을
갖는 JFS2 file system을 갖는 경우에 해당한다.
    AIX 5.3 APAR IY59387은 IY58143에 포함되어 있다.
JFS2 file system에 Heavy I/O activity가 발생하면 database process에
    Fix :
Need to install the IBM APAR-FIX IY59082, this APAR is included on
    bos.64bit 5.2.0.42.
    (주) IBM 엔지니어에게 확인 결과 이 Patch 안에 AIX5L 32bit 용과 64bit
용이 모두 포함되어 있는 것으로 확인됨.

    b,
The install was from my original Dell XP Pro-SP1 'Reinstallation' CD along with the complete MS XP-SP2 download that I burned to another CD. I also had all the latest Dell drivers from their website burned to a CD. Install went as follows:
    - Format HD
    - Install XP Pro SP1
    - Install SP2
    - Install Dell Drivers
    - Obtain any MS patches from their site
    - Install Office
    - Update Office from the MS website
    - Install iTunes
    - Tweak MS settings
    - Install many software programs
    - Make an interim Image of system and store to ExHD
    - Install other software programs (mostly security programs)
    - Make another 'complete' Image to ExHD
    - Restore backup data and music
After additional testing last night, I determined that it is not iTunes at all (or to blame). I get intermittent hangs/freezes/pauses in other media players (WMP, etc.).
Seems that something is causing the 'System' process to periodically jump up in CPU %age (though not more than 30-50%). Even this relatively small amount is enough to pause the playback of music or video, hang the mouse movement for a brief moment, or delay a menu opening. All very subtle - you have to be looking for it to notice (except with real-time audio-video, which is quite noticeable whenever this happens).
I had this problem a year ago, which is why I reimaged then and stayed with SP1 on the advice of Dell and Webroot. I'm stumped as to where to look for the culprit. Every time I go back to the original HD with SP1, everything runs smoothly. Some sort of system call is generating this complete pause....
I'll be limited in my Internet ability for the next several days, so I may be out of touch until Friday. I'll keep testing and playing with the limited equipment I take along....
Any thought you or others want to toss out, I'll attempt when possible.
    Thanks!

I cannot import my AVCHD files by using log and transfer. I can see all the files, but when I add the file to import que it doesnt work, the status is a red and says that its no data. I have tried with different cards and different cardreaders, but it is still the same. Why?!

Please give us more specific information -
What make/model camcorder are you using?
Are you absolutely certain this is AVCHD video?  Tell us more about the video settings you used in the camcorder (eg, frame size, frame rate, quality level)
Why are you attempting Log & Transfer from a card reader instead of from your camcorder?  Have you tried doing Log & Transfer from your camcorder?
Are the SD cards straight from the camcorder, unaltered, or are you just using the cards as storage?
Are you using FCE 4.0 or FCE 4.0.1?

  • No Signal on Mac Pro with Radeon X1900 and ViewSonic VA1912wb monitor

I have a Mac Pro (purchased in Summer 2007) with an ATI Radeon X1900 (512mb) graphics card. I am connecting the card to a ViewSonic VA1912wb (LCD) monitor.
When I first bought the system, it worked perfectly fine with the monitor. While it did not detect any display at certain times (when trying to install Windows XP for Boot Camp, and sometimes when starting up Boot Camp), I understand this had something to do with the video mode, and when I connected an old CRT monitor, everything worked fine.
Now, when I turn on my Mac Pro, the display sometimes does not show up at all. I often have to start and restart my Mac 5 or 10 times before the ViewSonic monitor will detect a signal and display. Sometimes even more (I was unable to get a display at all last night, after restarting over 20 times).
Does anyone know why this could be? It's very frustrating to have a nice computer and a nice monitor, but not be sure if I'll be able to start it up at all.

First you got to isolate the problem... is it the monitor, the graphic card, or the cable.
The easiest way to find it out, is to connect another display. Does it work, you know the monitor is to blame... if not, it's the graphic card or the cable.
Try another cable... if it still don't work, it's the graphic card.
I have the same graphic card and while surfing around the net, I figured out that these specific model has to be treated very carefully because it is overheating very fast. So it's strictly recommended to clean it every once in a while from dust... using compressed air.
Search around the net and you can find workarounds and pictures. Like this for example: http://www.macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=13207

  • MacBook Pro hanging with blue screen and spinner after installing Software Update

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me with this current issue. Just a few hours ago I finished reinstalling Mac OS X Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro. I performed a clean installation as part of a yearly spring cleaning that I do on all my systems to keep them optimized. So there was I downloading some software updates which included the combo update of OSX 10.6.8 and others. The updates finished downloading and the system logged out to install the updates, when the updates finished installing my MacBook proceeded by logging out into a blue screen and show a gray spinner similar to the one seen when you start your Mac. Here's the problem after 2 hours the system is showing the spinner and the blue screen, I think that my computer has just hanged in the reboot process.
I was wondering what should I do? Do a force restart? Or leave it overnight?
Also, where can I find any information on what error is causing this issue?
I appreciate your responses and help.
By the way, I installed Mac OS X from a USB stick that has the original image of the disk installer that came bundled with my computer.

    Kappy wrote:
Force a shutdown. Do not restart yet, but first do the following:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
    Hi Kappy,
Checked the hard drive after forcing a shutdown and booting from my Snow Leopard Installer USB Key and the status of the HDD says "Verified". I ran the repair and the volume was repaired successfully. Clicked on "Verify Disk" and it says "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So I ran a second repair and again no errors were reported.
As suggested I booted back again in Safe Mode and restarted normally. All software appears to have been installed successfully. But I don't understand why my computer hanged and showed the spinner after installing the updates in the blue screen that appears just before rebooting. I am aware that the system shows that spinner after a OS update but the longest it lasts is 30 seconds at the most in my previous cases.

  • Tieing 2 key systems together with fxo/fxs and 1760 routers

    Hello,
I need some programming help from someone good on voice. I've got two offices that I'm trying to tie the phone systems together with 2x Cisco 1760 routers each with 2x PVDM-256K-4 1 DSP Modules. I've got the layout below and am basically looking to do two things.
First, I would like ext. 210 from the first site to dial a co group “1” or directly access a “CO line” that is connected to the Cisco and get dial tone to be able to dial the directory number for a “CO line” with the same setup at the second site and have it able to be answered like a normal call and be transferred.
The second connection I would like is to have ext. 210 be able to dial locally to one of site 1's analog single line extensions and have the Ciscos make a connection through to site 2 and go off-hook on one of the analog single line extensions of site 2 in order to get a site 2 dial tone and be able to dial locally @ site 2 to any extension, or dial one of site 2's co groups or directory number for one of site 2's real CO lines and place a “local” call to the outside world from site 2's lines.
Obviously this process would all be reversed for site 2 accessing site 1. I've come across a couple of documents, like ID: 15405, and a section of a VoIP Configuration guide labeled OL-1070-01 and have some command structure available, but the concept of how it all takes place and should be configured is a little fuzzy.
    Thank you,
    Mark

OK, let me simplify things. I think I'm putting way too much thought into it all. I've got site A and site B. Site A (currently for testing) has a single line extension from Site A's key system plugged into port 0 in fxo card in slot 2. Site A will have a patch from port 0 in fxs card in slot 3 to a CO line on the key system. Site B has the same setup. Both have fa 0/0 configured with IP addresses on the same network (just to simulate the connections - later I will actually move these to two separate internet feeds for more advanced testing).
Currently for testing I have disconnected the fxs patches to the phone systems and just have a regular analog phone plugged in. When my phone plugged into Site A goes off hook, I get dial-tone from the extension hooked up to Site B (which is the exact way I want it). When my analog phone is plugged into Site B (port 0 of fxs card in slot 3) and goes off hook, it will ring port 0 of fxs card in slot 3 of Site A. This I don't understand. If I can get both to behave like Site A, I'd be happy.
I need to know if this makes sense to anyone on how I want this to operate? Is it achievable?
Here's my base config on it (Site A first, then Site B):

  • Problem with SD card and Sony Bloggie MHS-CM5

I have just bought a Sony Bloggie model MHS-CM5 and a SanDisk SDHC (number 4) 4gb card. For some reason when I turn it on, it was saying "error formatting sd card" or something very similar. I did some research and saw a problem somewhat similar, tried connecting to my computer, taking the battery out and back in, formatting card from camera options, and now it is saying there is no space on the memory card when it is brand new. I am fairly good with these things and I am stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated!

A SDHC type 4 4GB card should work fine with your bloggie, so try the card in another device and try another card in your bloggie to establish which is having the issue. If you find that the bloggie is having issues with several different cards it may need service. Give Sony support a call and they will be happy to help:

  • A20m Trouble with Ethernet Card and the Internet

I have a A20m Thinkpad that is not connecting to the internet. At first my problem was that I did not have an ethernet card as detailed on this forum post.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Legacy-ThinkPads-A-I-V-300-600/A20m-Network-Controller-Driver/m-p/219725...
Thus I bought this ethernet card and installed it.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190223756432
From what I can tell I installed it correctly and then I preceded to install the drivers for this card. The ones located on this page.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4K4PWT
It seemed to work well and the controller shows up in hardware devices.
That went well, but I still cannot connect to the internet. I thought it might be the card itself but after running the 3Com NIC Utilities that came with the drivers it said that there were no problems with the card.
Also of note I have noticed that there are no lights on the port where the ethernet cable is plugged in. I am not sure if there should be. Any help people could offer would be most appreciated. This Thinkpad is running windows XP.

Called them up today and basically I got them to pay for shipping this time. They told me they did not have any more new ones of my model and are not willing to ship me a suitable new replacement model after all this trouble and just gonna keep on shipping me refurbished until we find one that works (the heck? ...his quotes). So basically by the time I get my 2nd refurbished replacement (and assume it actually works this time) my computer would been down for over 2 months.
I am currently saving up for a 9800gt from evga since they are budget priced now (heard they actually have a good customer service and good quality cards) and based on my experience with MSI I can't recommend their products to anyone now sadly.
Hopefully MSI will send me out a tested a verified to word refurbished card this time.

  • Using the Z68A-GD65 board with graphics card and Lucid Virtual Driver

Edit:  I found the online manual for Lucid, so the main question is answered (where to plug in the monitor).  However, I'd appreciate tips or suggestions on how to use this new technology.
I play a few games, burn/rip blu-rays, but mostly use Photoshop.  The latest Photoshop and Win7 both use the processing power of a discrete graphics card.  However, I'm going to install an i7 2600k which also has the graphics built into it.  I understand the Lucid software allows video processing with the i7 and gaming with the discrete card.  It sounds as though "i-mode" is the way to go, but are there any drawbacks?
Also, while I have your attention, here's my planned build, and I'd appreciate any recommendations/suggestions.  Thanks for the help.
    Win7 Pro
    Z68A-GD65
    Intel i7 2600k
16 gigs of Corsair Vengeance Low Profile (1600)
    EVGA GTX 560Ti
Crucial SSD 128gig SATA III (for the boot drive)
Plus, all the leftover gear from the old build (BD drive, 3 hard drives, OZC 700w psu)

    Thanks for your feedback .
