System Prefs won't stay locked

My computer has all sorts of problems when I restart it, mostly regarding things in the System Preferences. The network settings don't remember my passwords for networks and when I have the lock clicked on to prevent further changes, it will be unlocked again after I restart. Do I just always get stuck with the freak computer, or does this happen to other people, too? Frankly, I'm kind of sick of nothing ever working right on my computer that's supposed to never have problems (if you believe everything you see on TV).

Hi
I think the way it works, at least in 10.3 which I am using, which incidentally is the focus of this forum, though maybe it is the same with Tiger, is that for an Admin account, the Sys. Prefs are unlocked based on the correct assumption that the administrator has the privileges to make changes to those preferences, like Sharing, and therefore is not required to unlock anything by default,
In a standard account (ie. no Admin privileges) the locks are always closed by default and can only be opened by supplying the Admin account name and password.
As you state that "sharing prefs in particular need to be accessible only to myself", I suggest having standard accounts for everyone whom you do not want to have access to the Sys. Prefs, so for them they will be locked and only your admin account will open unlocked.
This may not suit your particular requirements but is an attempt to explain the situation.

  • Preview missing -  no menubar clock - System Prefs won't open....help!

Wow. Preview is missing (it shows up in the Application window as a zero K app, then when I click on it, it vanishes), all the Preview docs I had on my desktop are neutral icons ( just a white rectangle), and also my menubar clock is gone. System Preferences won't open. Help! I've tried repairing permissions but that's as far as I know what to do. Thanks, Chris

Wow, I feel a tiny bit proud of myself. And actually, Disk Warrior eventually helped,in a circuitous way. I reloaded the Combo Update for 10.3.9, that seemed to rejuvenate Preview. But still no System Prefs, no menubar clock. I right-clicked on System Preferences ( that
right-click or option-click is really useful sometimes, because it can open
packages and other single-icon deals that you can't see into otherwise - I
really recommend a 2-button mouse, I was resistant to it after 20 years of Mac-ing but the 2 buttons combined
with a scroll wheel is way better than the Apple mouse and the Dell mouse
is about 10 bucks on eBay)... once that was cracked, there was a Terminal
icon which I clicked on... wwhich indicated that there was a
pref file it couldn't find. When I searched for it with Find, there it was
in the 'REscued Items" folder from DiskWarrior. Dropped it in where the
Terminal readout indicated it was missing, and voila! A restart, and I
have System Prefs again and a menubar clock. The only thing still FU is
that shift-3 isn't working to get a snapshot of the screen so in order to
generate a PDF from the screen I have to use Grab and finagle there. I
have a feeling, though, that I'll find a way to fix it now. And as you
know, sometimes these things weirdly self-correct after a while, a few
dozen restarts, whatever. At any rate if that's all that I have to contend
with it's not a big deal. So -= DW helped in the end! Thanks to the respondents on this issue- C

  • The system drive won't stay unlocked

When attempting to use the OSX Snow Leopard install disk for the repair tools I press and hold the C key and unfortunately the disk ejects.????!!!!  I looked at the "Get Info" data and noticed that all of the drives including the system drive are locked.  So I unlocked the system drive and rebooted with the Snow Leopard Install Disk, held down the C key and again the disc ejected.  I looked at the "Get Info" data and the drive had relocked itself again.  What do I need to do to keep the drive unlocked.  I won't be able to access the Install Disc and repair the drive with the advanced tools unless I can get and keep the drive unlock for read and write purposes.  I might be wrong about the access problem and maybe the Install Disc is ejecting for some other reason but I still need to be able to unlock the drives for read and write purposes and after I "restarted" with the Install Disc the drive had relocked itself.  What gives...????

  • System Prefs won't stick

I have a couple of Mac G-5 towers that have annoying quirks in the OS that I wonder if someone can help me solve. Both of them are running Leopard 10.5.8. One of the Macs has two hard drives in it, which I named A and B. I do all my work with Drive A, and it is assigned as the startup disk. I keep an OS on Drive B so that I can start up with it and use it to repair A if I ever have to.
So Disk A is assigned as the startup disk (and I clicked the little lock icon shut), but about half the time, when I start up the Mac, it will select Disk B to start up with. When that happens, I have to go to the system Preferences and choose A all over again, even though it is already shown as the startup disk. On the restart, it will usually start up correctly with A. But couple of startups later, the computer goes back to choosing Drive B as the startup disk again. This is getting tiresome. Short of throwing the System folder off of Drive B, how can I force this Mac to always use A as the startup disk?
Mac G-5 #2 also has an annoying habit: after I arrange a folder's window the way I want with the View Options, the next time the Mac starts up, the windows go back to the way they were before. For example, in the View Options, I set a folder's window to arrange items by Name, to show the icons at a large size, and to Show Info for the items in the folder. But the next time I open that folder, the icons have all gone back to the way they were before: tiny icons randomly scattered all over the window, with no info shown. How can I make these folder windows stay the way I set them?
I tried Disk Utility's "Repair Permissions" and "Repair Disk" on these drives, but these quirks persist. Is there any way to make a Mac stick to the assigned startup disk and window arrangements?

    Hi Tom,
    On the startup...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
See which one your G5 has...

    On #2's issue...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • System Prefs won't open from Apple Menu

    Ay, ay, ay.
    Gigabit G4, Tiger
I couldn't get rid of the blue label on Applications/System Preferences so I created an "archive" of it, tossed the original in the trash and opened the archive. The renewed Sys Prefs gave me permission to change the label, but now it won't open from the apple menu. I guess its an alias there. Where would it be? How to fix it?
    Casey

    Hi,
In some cases "newer" version of an App will not run on Older OS software.
For instance Leopard's iChat 4 will not run in Tiger.
You say a clean install and do not say if you moved your Home Folder Contents back.
Your Mail would have been in there as would the Address Book info.
However related to the first item, you may have issues getting the older Tiger apps to read documents/Databases created by the newer Apps in Leopard.

  • Bus Error, System Pref won't launch

This isn't a case of the System Preference not being found, being moved out of the Applications Folder, or anything trivial like that. System Preferences will not launch. This is a clean install of Leopard, and updated to 10.5.8. The error message in console is:
    9/1/10 3:11:45 PM com.apple.launchd74 (0x0-0x18018.com.apple.systempreferences212) Exited abnormally: Bus error
"The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly." Relaunch doesn't wo

baltwo swrote : "Move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file out of your /Library/Preferences/"
Was my first idea and would love to but, as this is just after having installed the system, Sys Prefs has not yet created any Pref, good, bad or indifferent ; ).
    Catch22ish, huh ?

  • OS X Lion Locked Network settings won't stay locked

I have Mac OS X 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro and am having the following problem:
I disabled my Wireless network and locked my Network settings. I reboot. The Wireless is re-enabled and the settings are Unlocked.
Additionally, I have other software (Intego) in which I lock the settings and after reboot they are unlocked again.
I also set the setting to not "Reopen documents" when an application is re-opened (what a really iritating modification) and it does NOT WORK. Not everytime, but most of the time, reopening an app like Excel will re-open EVERY last document I had opend previously.
What is wrong with this operating system????!!!!
    Help please.

I guess no one else is having this problem?
    I still do.
Just this morning after logging in, my network settings were again unlocked.
I opened excel and it tried to open two documents I had previously opened.
I have repeatedly locked the network (and all other) settings and repeatedly configured it to NOT OPEN documents or apps on login or reboot, to no avail.
And I do have admin privileges to this computer.
Something is terribly wrong with MAC OS X Lion.
Does anyone at Apple have a comment or some advice?

  • Some of my system prefs won't save...

I posted this in the MacBook forum to no avail, so I thought I'd try here. I got my new MacBook, used the migration assistant to copy my environment over, and for the most part all has been wonderful...
My problem is, at least two of my System Preference Panes are, as far as I can tell, unchangeable!
I go into Sound, turn off the "user alert" sounds (not fond of them), close System Preferences, and the sounds are still there. Open the Prefs, open the pane, that button is turned on again. Go look inside the Lib/Prefs folder, sure enough, that .plist file hasn't been changed... I've tried blowing it away, and it does recreate it, so it's not a permissions issue (I don't think)... but I can't change it in the GUI (and unfortunately, it's a binary .plist, so I can't just edit it by hand).
Ditto for screen savers... it's defaulting to "Flurry", I can change it in the GUI, test the changed one, close the Prefs, and it's still Flurry. The .plist hasn't been touched, the SystemPrefs aren't changing them... and again, that one is also binary, so I can't hack it by hand. If I delete it, it makes a new one... but with the default settings ("Flurry"), which I can't change.
    Thoughts?

when you say that you don't think it's a permissions
issue, do you mean that you've already tried
repairing permissions from disk utility? which could
be necessary anyways since you've updated to 10.4.5,
    unless it shipped like that.
I did run that... I meant more in the UNIX sense, looking at the settings on the files and directories (and the fact that it can create the .plist when I delete it, which suggests it should be able to write new settings into it)...
and have you made a 'test' account? cause it sounds
like an issue where it might be appropriate.
That I haven't done... but I will, good idea!

  • Network in System Prefs won't load -  in this big world surely there is someone who can help me!

After returning home after a house refubishment, had to get TalkTalk engineers to reconnect me.  Now have internet and Fibre Optic access.  But, when I click on the Network icon, it keeps saying: Loading Network ...'  But never does.  I am not very computer savvy.  Nobody in these communities speak English, so to speak.  I can see that people are looking at my pleas, but nobody is replying.  Hair being pulled out as I type!  Please help.

I have uninstalled my Access Connection, but this problem seems to persist. IBM technician have changed the wireless card of my T60, the first few days after it was changed was very fine, no problem at all. About a week later, the problem occured again, and it happened quite frequently after that occurence. Now i really have no idea what is the cause and how to solve it. Will be greatful if there is anyone that can help me.

  • System Prefs "LOCK" will NOT STAY LOCKED... stuff changes... Help, please?

I have been using OS X since it first was introduced, and have noticed this behavior in all of the versions that I have run, up until and including 10.4.10, now. It was not too much of a concern to me until now, and I would like to resolve this once and for all if possible.
    PROBLEM:
System preferences does not stay locked after I lock it. Internet sharing keeps turning itself OFF, after I start the service, and then LOCK system preferences. I go back and check later, and SYS PREFS is unlocked. Sometimes internet sharing is still on, sometimes it is off. Some other times I will go back and check after locking, and it will still be locked, but internet sharing now OFF!!! After a re-start, it is the same as described above. Sometimes OK, sometimes not. I leave the mac on most of the time and rarely turn it off.
I use the mac as a gateway for two other PCs, in my small network. My wife is the only other human user on the network, with her wireless laptop. I use the other PC (it's mostly off the majority of the time) and the "gateway" Mac OS X 10.4.10. If my wife wants to use her PC and I am not at home when the phenomenon occurs, she does not have internet access, as she is a computer novice and does not use the Mac at ALL.
When I have noticed the occurrence in the past, it is annoying, but I just check and the turn things on and re-lock what the "gremlins" have been playing with. Now In addition to wanting to keep my wife happy, and surfing when she wants, I would really like the system to operate the way it is supposed to.
Has anyone else been experiencing this sort of thing over the years of OS X and found a (hopefully) simple solution?
    Thanks in advance.....
    R. Andom

..."I am at a loss for what to do as in reality this might really be a security issue."...
It might be, but it may not...
I suspect the fact that "Internet Sharing" stops running has nothing to do with "System Preferences" being unlocked - pref panes are apparently unlocked automatically by default when a user logs in to an "admin" account, especially after a reboot:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1790.html
Most people recommend not using an "admin" account as their main account for security reasons so demoting the account to "standard" might be one option, but otherwise, the "Require password"... option can be selected as described in the "Help" note.
As for the other aspect of the problem, I have never used "Internet Sharing" so I can't comment on what might be causing it to crash (if that is in fact what is happening). It might help to see if anything turns up in the logs...

  • System preferences won't launch

    Hi,
2011 Core i7 iMac with Lion. Noticed yesterday that system prefs won't launch. No spinning beachball, does absolutely nothing including no launch animation. Read some suggestions on these forums and tried resetting the SMC, followed by booting into disk utilities and doing repair permissions. Then did a reinstall of Lion, again from the disk utilities boot. Not sure if I was at 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 before all this, but reinstall got me back to 10.7.3, updated to 10.7.4, problem persists with both.
I just noticed this is only with the main admin account. There is one secondary account on the computer that my kids use - if I switch to it I am able to access system prefs.
Any suggestions? Do I have to archive and install now?

Have same problem, plus other issues too....
Have tried doing the restart in safe mode and then go to SysPrefs to Users & Groups, etc...but I can't open the SysPrefs window and when I try to select Users & Groups from the pull-down menu, nothing happens.....
Also, when I try to search for 'com.apple.systempreferences.plist' file to delete, search does not respond, ie, I don't see that it is searching for anything...
What started this for me, was when I came back to my MacBook which is hooked up to an external 24" LCD monitor, and tried to wake up the display/MacBook and saw the message on the external monitor "No HDMI Input". So, was trying to figure out why all of a sudden the monitor wouldn't work and went to check SysPrefs....which of course, wouldn't open....
This is very odd....and frustrating too....
    Any suggestions????
Thanks for any and all help!

  • Cannot use System Pref's/Network -- dialog box won't go stay gone

G5 running Tiger, browsers, Mail and other internet functions (DSL, PPPoE) work fine BUT: if I boot the Network app in System Pref's, it shows a dialog box that says "Your network settings have been changed by another application." If I press OK the box goes away for a second and then returns -- there is no way to proceed, or use this app -- the only thing I can do is for Systems Pref's to quit. In other words, it won't take OK for an answer!
Some notes: 1) Network diagnostics from the Help menu says everything is normal. 2) I did move my Ethernet connection to another computer to run that one -- this Mac was off at the time. I did not change any modem or router settings, and this Mac, as I said, works fine except for the above problem. 3) an app called "Internet Connect" in the apps folder will not boot (don't know what this is); 4) the utilities Netinfo Mgr and Network Utility don't tell my anything useful or at least that I can understand. How do I reset the SystemPref's/Network app or whatever it is so I can use it? Thanks.

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!
