System suddenly is using all ram

Hi, Can someone please assist as to what may be causing the issue I'm having?
Problem description:
System is cycling every 6 to 8 minutes using all ram (16) gigs. This has not happened before. I”m lost as to what to do other than the basic.

I Thought that ram memory cycling from 12 to 0 gigs or so was and is a problem in and of itself. As you've explained and demonstrated it's not. But this scenario  that is now playing out has never happened since I've had this Mac Mini. Again many thanks.
SO if I may ask one other question separate from the above.
In updating to Yosemite would you recommend a clean install or just upgrading? I've not done a clean install since purchasing the Mini but I was thinking since I'm having issues with the system hanging and spinning icons perhaps performing a wipe is warranted. If so, I understand I can not just format and download Yosemite but I must reinstall Snow Leopard then update to Yosemite. Is this correct? Since I've upgraded the ram from 4 gigs to 8 and earlier this year to 16 gigs, will Snow Leopard recognize 16 gigs of ram?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

  • System expanding to use all RAM when idle

Just had my Mac Book at the Apple Store for tests because the fan was running a lot & computer was running really slow.  They found no hardware problem but suggested my problem was that the 2G of Ram was not enough because the system with nothing open was using over 75% of the RAM.   Installed 4G of RAM, now 2 days later, having restarted the computer several times, the system has expanded to using 80% of the RAM with just Safari open.   Anyone else having this problem.. open to suggestions.  Have reset the PRAM, Reset SMC, ran long harddrive test, had it to the Apple store, had them run there tests on??  This is a 13' Mac Book (late 2007) model, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with UTD software, now with 4G of RAM using 3.81G of RAM with just Safari and the Activity Monitor open.   Thoughts, suggestions, cures ..  all would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

You can find out which application is eating up your memory in Activity Monitor. Selet "All Processes" from the drop down on the right side of the window (next to the search field). Then click on the header for the column marked "Real Mem". This will list all of the process running sorted by how much memory they are reserving, and will give you a clue as to where the problem is.
What web pages do you have open in Safari? Safari can grab large amount of memory depending what kind of plugins a particular site uses.

  • Safari uses all ram

A mid 2011 iMac, 8 GB of RAM.  If Safari is opened, it eventually consumes all RAM available and exhausts app memory.  I have completely wiped and reloaded, Tried a variety of OS versions, now 10.10, and no luck.  I'm pasting an Etre report for reference. I did follow one support tip to kill off Safari WebDav as that was going crazy as well. Any help appreciated.

  • Photoshop Using All RAM And Making 15gb TEMP Files-HELP!?

    Hey Guys,
Having a massive issue with Photoshop CC right now and need help asap!
I was recently working a on a really big PSB file (about 6gb or so) I finished the job, saved it, sent it to client, all went nicely. However now when I open Photoshop for whatever reason it instantly uses all of my RAM, and creates a huge 15gb RandomPrice TEMP file on my SSD scratch disk (as shown in the screenshot, excuse the crude snipping tool skills.) I have tried deleting the TEMP file, restarting my PC and opening PS again but it just starts making the file again, it has also drastically slowed down the time it takes to open PS which used to be about 2 seconds, and is now approximately 20 seconds. I'm pretty well clueless what to do here so throw some suggestion my way guys! EDIT: This temp file always reverts to the exact same size after deleting it, right down to the KB. I can sit in explorer refreshing it, watching the size of the temp file going up, and as soon as it reaches 15,276,080KB Photoshop opens up correctly.
    Cheers,
    Tom

The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • Using 10.5 have had system slow down used pr ram now all I have is a blue screen

need help used pram to reset system now it either shows the pin wheel turning or sometimes it will go to the blue screen but nothing else. all started when I downloaded one of the security that apple sent to down load.
need help please what to I do now, are we looking at a bad hard drive?

sorry if this is a duplicate response first one said error.
is this the battery under the airport card section?
also installed a disk for hardware trouble restarted and held the C key came up with mac-boot. did this and I got a file folder with the apple Icon face and a question mark flashing back and forth . what do you think? could all of this just be a loose connection to the hard drive? Battery read on digital meter 3.1 volt dc I know under load this could change.

  • Logic 8 not using all RAM

I'm running Logic 8 on a MacPro 8-core with 13 GB of RAM, but Logic always crashes once it's used about 6.5 GB of memory. I'm trying to run a lot of sample libraries and plugins at once (Vienna Instruments, EWQLSO with Kontakt2, Stylus, EXS24 instruments, etc.), but it reaches a limit and crashes, telling me "could not allocate enough memory" and other memory messages like that. How can I get Logic to use the rest of my RAM that's just sitting there?

Ok here's your first problem... 13 gigs of ram. If you read and pay attention to Apple's info, you'll see that they highly recommend you pair up the RAM chips and use the same ones, otherwise you're using 64bit memory addressing as opposed to 128, which of course means processing things faster. Look at your RAM configuration and look at which ones are not paired up, I'm thinking you have a pair of 512MB DIMMS in there which should be taken out, yes you'll lose a gig, big deal, you'll gain speed.
Second, Logic can't use more than 4 gigs of RAM. It's not a 64bit application. 64bit as it's compiled, I am not talking about the audio engine. The fact that it reaches 6.5GB is because EXS24 has its way of starting up more processes which can use 4gigs of ram Each. Logic itself is not using the 4 gigs.
The reason you crash is because one of the plugins you're using is not written properly to let Logic know that it's running out of RAM, and hence Logic tried to take up more and crashes because it can't address more than 4gigs of ram, and when it does... boom. As an example of that, BFD 1.5 used to be like that, until FX rewrote their code to work properly, and now when BFD2 tries to get above what Logic is capable of, it stops loading samples and throws up a little popup telling you you're running out of memory.
Your problem is not logic, it's one of those plugins which is not written properly.

  • Win2k8R2 svchost.exe suddenly starts to use all memory

    Dear all
I have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 + current Patchlevel Remote Desktop Host. Installed are a lot of applications, SCCM 2012 Client, Kasperksky AntiVirus Enterprise Edition.
Yesterday i had the problem that the svchost.exe is using all RAM of the Server (32GB) and has a private working set of 120GB. A quick "fix" was to restart the server. And now after around 24h i have the same problem again.
I did not change something on the server except install the Microsoft CA Hotfix against flame.
The svchost that has this problem controls this services:
    svchost.exe
AeLookupSvc, CertPropSvc, gpsvc, IKEEXT, iphlpsvc, LanmanServer, MMCSS, ProfSvc, Schedule, SENS, SessionEnv, ShellHWDetection, Themes, Winmgmt
The server is now running since 2 Years without any problems and now it starts :/
After a restart this svchost.exe is using just 48MB RAM.
    Thanks for any tips
    JBAB

    Hi,
For troubleshooting purposes please reconfigure so that the services for this group run in their own process.  To do this you may create a .cmd file using Notepad with the following contents:
    sc config AeLookupSvc type= own
    sc config Appinfo type= own
    sc config AppMgmt type= own
    sc config BITS type= own
    sc config Browser type= own
    sc config CertPropSvc type= own

    sc config LanmanServer type= own
    sc config MMCSS type= own
    sc config MSiSCSI type= own
    sc config ProfSvc type= own
    sc config RasAuto type= own
    sc config RasMan type= own
    sc config RemoteAccess type= own
    sc config sacsvr type= own
    sc config Schedule type= own
    sc config SCPolicySvc type= own
    sc config seclogon type= own

    sc config ShellHWDetection type= own
    sc config Themes type= own
    sc config wercplsupport type= own
    sc config Winmgmt type= own
    sc config wuauserv type= own
After saving the file please double-click to apply the changes and then restart your server so that they will take effect.
After restarting your server please open task manager, select the Processes tab, and sort the display by the memory column so that the processes that are using the most memory will appear on top.  When one of the services starts to use too much memory
you will be able to right-click on it and choose Go to Service(s) and you will know which service is misbehaving.
    Thanks.

It seems to happen randomly. all of a sudden I get the beachball Activity Monitor says root kernel_task
it has 4Gig mem 2.8 core 2 duo seems like it just all of a sudden it boggs down.using all memory. then after afew minutes it goes back to normal.
    any help would be great...

IF you are using Safari my guess is that is the culpirt. Open Activity Monitor and click the System Memeory tab to see what apps are using most of  your RAM. As mentioned keep a close eye on Safari.

  • Oracle using all the ram on my server

    Hi,
I have oracle 11g r2 installed on red hat linux 5 with 8 GB of RAM. I need to specify that only oracle is installed on this machine, and even in idle (absolutely no one connected on the database) all the memory is used

You may not expressly be using all the RAM in your machine but OS X will, whether you know it or not.
Each time you read a file from disk, whatever was read is cached by the system; when the file or program is no longer in use, the memory is marked free for the system to recover for other purposes but as long as it remains in memory the next time you need to access that disk information it's simply read from memory.
The more RAM, the more disk data is kept around and the faster your machine will operate until that memory needs to be recovered or you reboot (or otherwise flush the disk cache.)

  • System service using all CPU w/XP SP1

I have a K7N420Pro and after I install XP SP1 the system service uses all available CPU cycles.  If I check the task manager my CPU usage is at 100%!! has anybody else seen this?
By the way, It is the system service not the system idle process.
    System specs:
    K7N420Pro
    Athlon XP 1900
    1.5 GB Ram (3x 512 MB)
    2.6 BIOS

I pulled EVERYTHING off the MB. Floppy, CD/DVD drives all the memory except one stick, I even disconnected the USB and diagnostic leds.  That didn't work.  Then I realized that the small sound card addon wasn't actually part of the MB even though it came with it.  I powered down and pulled the CNR Sound MAX card and when I rebooted it found some additional sound hardware and the system service was back to no CPU usage.  I then shut down and readded the CNR card and when I powered on the system it was still fine.  I now have to reconnect all the rest of the stuff I removed and make sure it is still fine but it looks good so far.
Well, It's not fine.  When I rebooted the problem was back.  I will now pull everything off again and then add it back one piece at a time. :(
    OK
Now I finally know what the problem is.
I had both of the additional USB connections filled.  One from the diagnostic thing and the other from the front of my case.  Well I guess that the cables from my case are bad since when they are connected my problem is there but it goes away when I remove them.  I can definitely live with just 4 USB ports.  I only have 3 USB devices right now and if I ever get more I can just add a USB hub.

  • Trustedinstaller using all my RAM

I've had a laptop and a PC were I have done a reinstall from a recovery partition.
On both the system when I'm updating them the trustedInstaller.exe process has been using all of the RAM, and resulting in low memory errors.
If i install the updates bit by bit it isn't so bad. but is i install say 130 the ram hits max around the 100th update. on the laptop I've just done the process had 3,800,000KB committed ram and was only working 50,000KB, the computer only has 4GB in it
so it just maxed out and the updates would take 10x longer than they normally do.

    Hi TommyWat,
    What is your current situation?
What is result about using the Windows performance toolkit?

  • POA Agent Uses Uses all memory in system then is killed.

    System OES2 SP3 latest patches
    Groupwise 2012 SP1
    4GB Ram
The POA is uses all the memory growing to 65% before the system is out of memory.
Ran GWCheck structure and content fix.
    Opened a SR with Novell.
Found the SLAP error, did the procedures per Tid=7009119
Start the POA everything seem okay, so added couple of user. After all the users got on the system the memory usage started to climb.
    Check the logs no errors.
Could this be caused by on of the clients????
    Any Idea would help
    Thanks
    Jody

How many users on this POA? The POA can consume a large amount of RAM, but not normally. Ours is sitting at about .5GB for about 500 heavy users. The GWIA and GWINTER typically grow very fat: 2 -4 GB.
Since you have a SR open, work the problem with the engineer, if it looks like its languishing, you can always ask for an escalation.
Does this server have swap configured? A caption from top might help us to know whats what, including the line for the POA in question.

  • Export out of Motion uses all my Ram?

Why when I export out of Motion it uses all my Ram? Whether I have 6GB or 10GB of Ram it uses it all.
Then it starts all the page outs. Right now I am at 12GB of page outs.
From what I understood you should not have a lot of page outs thats why I purchased more Ram.

Well, as a bit rate, HDV has the same throughput as regular DV. The throughput for ProRes is higher so if you have a lot of multiclip angles, you'll need RAID speeds to run it.
However, HDV is a Long GOP format and as such is not really meant for editing, it's designed for file compression. Pro-Res is an intraframe codec. You can wiki the difference if you want to get into specifics, but the gist of it is that HDV requires a lot of processor power to uncompress the GOP structure, allow for editing and then rebuild the GOP structure on export. This is what makes HDV undesirable for editing. It also eats up a lot of what Motion uses to perform math for motion gfx.
If you're working with multiclips, and you have FCS 3, then you have access to the ProRes LT and Proxy codecs, both of which are high-quality/low bitrate codecs. I would convert the HDV to proxy or LT (whichever your system can handle), edit, and then batch re-digitize to the source tapes. However, I would want the high-rez source to be ProRes regular, not HDV.

  • System not using all avail. mem.

Hi all, did a lot of forum searching and haven't seen this topic.
I'm using PPCS5(in production Premium) While rendering, the program is not using all available memory. before I go on here is the system I am using:
    Win7pro
    EVGA X58FTW mobo
    I7 970
    6x4gig Kingston hyperX 1600 RAM
    Quadro fx4000
    WD 140gig Raptor sys. drive
    2x1TB RAID 0 (3gig SATA) data
    2x2TB RAID 0 (6gig SATA) data
    see image:
I have 21gigs allocated to the program.
Is the bottleneck the cache memory?
    This is what I'm outputting:
    Thanks for looking.

There is a little contradiction in the information here, HDV is 1440 x 1080 i60 or possible p30 I do not know of any camera that is 60p

  • TS1388 My battery on my macbook pro all of a sudden keeps using the battery power really quickly, so I am having to rechareg it constantly.  Does anyone know why this occurs or how to fix it.  I have used all the energy saving tips.

Hi My battery on my macbook pro keeps running low on power very quickly and I have to keep recharging it.  This has never happened before. I have used all the power saver options, but it keeps happening.  Can anyone help. The battery seems to be losing power even when it is turned off.

    Hi BigThinker,
How old is your Mac? If it is an older one, then the battery may just be dying. You can check by clicking on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner, then clicking on About This Mac>More Info>System Report, then click on Power (about half way down the list). At the top of the resulting display, you should see the following type of info:
The Health Information will tell you if your battery is going to need replacement soon. If it says Normal, then it is not the battery.
    Cheers,
