System went back to 10.6.8 from Lion after hard drive replacement

I just got my iMac back from the Apple Store where they replaced the hard drive (on recall). I backed up the contents of my computer on a 2 TB LaCie external drive using "Time Machine". I brought home the iMac, attached the external drive, and started copying the backup onto my new hard drive. When it finished, I did a shut down and restart. My password wouldn't work. I contacted Apple and they helped me replace my password. But now none of the applications that I purchased for the Lion system will work...not iPhoto, Apperture, iTunes, Safari, etc. Then I realized that my OSX had reverted back to 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and not Lion. I don't know what to do. I can't access Safari nor the App Store. I'm using FireFox right now, and I can access the App Store, but it won't let the App Store interact with my computer. I was just going to order Lion or even Mountain Lion and install...but I can't access them. Since Lion was only released as a download, there isn't a disk/DVD to go back to that would allow me to reinstall.
Does anyone have a solution? The Time Machine backup was done the night before I took in my computer, so there wasn't any "old" information on that external hard drive at all. The tech at Apple asked me what system I currently had on my computer when I left it, and I told him Lion.
I basically can't use my computer for things that I need until I get this problem resolved. Like some others who have posted on service problems, the 27 inch-iMac is pretty heavy and awkward to carry across a large parking lot, and through the 2-story mall to the Apple store. We did it yesterday, but I hope I can solve this problem without taking it back to the store. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whew...

  • Trying to restore system onto MBP after hard drive replaced using time capsule...

The hard drive on my MBP died and was replaced. Everything had been backed up on time machine, on a time capsule.
I've been trying unsuccessfully to do a full system restore from the time capsule. first I opened up the MBP and opted to restore from time machine in the set-up, using wifi network. I got the network and 'disc' 'data' '1 time machine backup' but when I pressed continue I got a dialogue box 'opening XX macbook pro...checking volumes' for about 3 hours, then finally the message 'no volumes detected'.
Tried that a couple of times, then went through the set-up procedure and in to Migration Assistant to try again.
The same thing happens, whether throgh wifi or usb - 3 or 4 hours of 'checking volumes' then 'volumes not found'.
Shouldnt restoring from time capsule be simple and straightforward even for a non-techie like me? (I thought that was the point!)
Any pointers on how I restore my old mac onto this new drive please?
NB old system was running on Lion. Mac Store installed snow leopard onto repaired mac.

How are you starting the system? Are you booting from a DVD or starting from the new hard drive that was installed?
In your OP you never stated the drive was replaced by Apple. You just said you had a New drive.
I'm going to leave this for someone that is more familair with time capsule as I have never worked with one.

Ok .. Please can someone give me step by step info on how to bring my mac back to life. It has a new hard drive, I have a time machine back up. • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

  • Can I pull iWeb files back from MobileMe after hard drive failure?

I suffered a recent hard drive failure and while I had my pictures backed up I didn't have my iWeb files back up and don't want to start the website from scratch if at all possible. Is there any way to save the files I uploaded to MobileMe back to my computer so I can continue my website?

  • How can I back up an IPhoto library from one external hard drive to another?

Hey Folks, WIth your help I have consolidated my IPhoto libraries using IPhoto Library Manager. I'm storing it on an external hard drive because I have run out of space on my Macbook Pro. Now I'd like to back it up. I have another large external hard drive that is set to perform Time Machine backups on my Macbook. Is there a way to ALSO use it to perform occasional backups of my IPhoto library which, as I mentioned, is not kept on the Macbook itself?  Thanks in advance, David

I do not understand your question
The basic answer is that TM backes up everything that is not excluded - it backsup to the TM backup - it can not backup any files that are on the TM backup volume - only those on other volumes
To remove an item form the excluded list select the item and click the "-" button

  • How do I put my pictures back on my macbook air from my external hard drive?

i have a macbook air and i put all my iphoto library on a toshiba external hard drive and i can not get them back onto my computer. can anyone please help me, i also dont want to do anything that will make me lose the photos that i now already have on my computer. if any body knows anything please let me know asap i really need the help.

hook up your Toshiba USB external to your AIR.
Open the Toshiba and drag your file with photos back to a file on your Air.
A: are the files on the HD in a time machine backup?  Or are they just stored there as archived data?
B: Can you or can you not access your HD when you hook same to your Air? ....or is the case that you cannot SEE to open it?

  • How to get iPhoto back after hard drive replaced?

I went in to get a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro because it had stopped working and lost everything on my laptop including iPhoto.
How should I go about getting the app back?

    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

  • How do I get all my music library from my iPad to iMac after hard drive replacement?

Recently my iMac hard drive crashed and was replaced with a new one.  Thankfully the entire music library was still on my iPad.  However, with the new hard drive, iTunes will only let me move over the purchased tracks from the iPad to the iMac.  This is not good since most of our music was purchased on CD and loaded into iTunes.  iTunes states that you can only sync with one computer and the iPad is showning a different library than my iMac.  How do I fix this?  Apple is holding my legally purchased music hostage!

No, they aren't holding it hostage. You are relying upon Apple to provide a service  you should be doing by backing up your computer properly.
Some of the information below is summarized by turingtest2 in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18842615
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • System Recovery After Hard Drive Replacement

I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 that the hard drive crashed on. I purchased a new hard drive for the laptop, but since the Windows Vista operating system and all the factory installed programs were on the Recovery Partition of the bad hard drive, I have no way to recovery the necessary files I need to restore it. Is there any way to get the necessary files/programs to restore the system to factory settings?
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    Selena

    Hi:
You can probably still get a set from this vendor at the link below.
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/
With regard to XP...yes, it will probably work but it may not be easy to do.
I would need to know the full model number of your dv6000 to give you the instructions to install XP because they are different depending on model series.

  • Recovering music from Ipod after hard drive failure.

My hard drive failed and was replaced. I had most of my music backed up, but not all of it. Can I recover songs from my Ipod and put them pack into Itunes? Can I also recover playlist? I did not have those backed up.
    Thanks,
    Mike

SImpler solution, if your not too comfortable using terminal, Is to simlply download the trail version of Music Rescue.
    http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/musicrescue/
The trails free forever, it just has an annoying popup every 50 songs you take off your ipod, it works exactly like a reverse iTunes.

  • Importing Songs from iPod after hard drive failed

My hard drive failed. Fortunately all of my songs were backed up on my iPod. Got a new computer and can't figure out how to get the songs from my iPod back to my computer. Some songs were purchased from iTunes, some from CDs. I tried the import function and all it does is bring the titles into my library but cannot find them when I try to play them on my computer. The songs are still on my iPod.
iPod 40g and Nano   Windows XP

The transfer of music is designed to be one way by default - from iTunes to iPod, however there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    PodPlus Windows Only
Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these and pick one you are happy with, they are generally quite straightforward.
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode in which case you can ignore the rest of this post. In manual mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased. However if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Iphoto package contents is separate from iphoto after hard drive recovery

I have moved some of my previous iphoto libraries to an external hard drive. It fell and was not usable and did nor want to open any of my fikes. It was rceovered and I've received it back. The package contents are now seperate from the iphoto icon's on the hard drive. If I want to open it, it asks me to upgrade to the new maverick's version iphoto library. I click upgrade but then it saus that my iphoto library needs recovery and that it will quit and relaunch by itself. If I press quit the whole process starts anew. What should I do to be able to view my iphoto library? Please please help!

Dear Larry. Unfortunately I have just copied all my old libraries to this external hard drive and was about to back it up when it fell. This was still the previous Iphoto app before I updated my mac to mavericks. I now run OS X 10.9.2. The folder in which I received back this hard drive shows: folder "2012 iphoto". In this folder all the package contents lies together with the older iphoto app. In other words, if I right click on the iphoto icon, there is no option to "show package content:, because I assume it is not in it and is seperated. I hope I explained this correctly?
If I now double click on the iphoto icon, iphoto starts up and it shows me the following message: "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.". I then click upgrade, and the following message appears: " An inconsistency in your database has been detected. The application will now quit, relaunch, and restore your database to a consistent state. This may take some time." It only shows a tab with "quit". If I pres quit, iphoto closes and reopens with the first message showing again. This continues untill I choose the option to not upgrade...

  • Need new Windows 8.1 activation key after hard drive replacement and system recovery

I am new to this board but a very long time ThinkPad user.
Bought a new T540p and the hard drive failed within five days of receipt; Lenovo sent me a new drive, recovery disks, machine is fully restored.  With a new hard drive, the machine's "finger print" no longer matches the original Microsoft OEM activation.  I have been on the phone with Lenovo six times and they promise to send me a new activation code, they have transferred me to Microsoft twice (they actually tried to help but concluded it was an OEM copy so they couldn't do anything).  Still no activation code and I really can't finish building out this machine.  Short of sending the machine back to Lenovo, is there a way to legimately get this valid OEM license activated? How do you get a new activation code from Lenovo? I was transferred back and forth between hardware and software support three times.  I searched the forum but did not see this problem exactly.
    Thank you for you help.

    @2014anonon...
Good day and welcome to the community.
On an outside chance of an embedded key / recovery dvd version (pro vs std) mismatch, please have a look at the first screen of your UEFI / BIOS. What value do you see listed as the Preinstalled OS License? Whether it's defined as Std or Pro in UEFI / BIOS, it should match the type of W8 Genuine sticker on the bottom of your machine. Then check the labeling of the recovery DVDs you received from Lenovo to compare.
Please let us know what you find.
    Regards.

  • Wont boot from CD after hard drive installation.

I just installed a new hard drive in an iBook 700mhz. I expected the system folder missing message, as the hard drive was blank. However now it wont boot from CD when I hold down c on boot. Also when I hold down option, I get a circular arrow and an arrow pointing to the right but no real options. I reset the PRAM but that didn't help. Any one have an idea?

Over the years I've seen some optical drive failures that were actually being caused by the hard drive. The first thing I'd suspect given a new drive is that you didn't quite seat the I/O cable. The second is that the HD is defective. A couple times everything seemed fine and when the drive was placed on the bench and after formatting it there and reinstalling it the drive and computer were happy.
