System-wide blue to purple color switch bug

I've been having a very confusing and inconsistent color issue which has persisted for years on both a PowerBook G4 and my new MacBook Pro using Panther and Tiger respectively. The MacBook is only two weeks old and still has a very clean system.
Seemingly at random blue colors will switch to purple in random places in most apps. Restarting the computer used to solve the issue, but it no longer does - I am permanently stuck with a purple color scheme (screenshots further down).
- The default unvisited link color in all apps has switched from blue to purple.
- The finder icon has switched from blue to purple in both the dock and the command-tab switcher (but the icon is the correct color when viewed inside the CoreServices folder). All other blue dock icons are unaffected.
- Some toolbar or sidebar images in most apps which were blue are now purple, but other blue icons have stayed blue.
I have screenshots just to show that I'm not imagining this. Mail and the Finder use the same drag-and-drop sidebar highlight color. However, Mail has now taken on a purple theme:
And here is the Finder icon as seen in the dock, and then as an alias in the Finder:
Here is what I have tried thus far (nothing has worked):
- Logging out and in
- Logging out and in while holding shift (safe login)
- Restarting the computer
- Restarting the computer while holding shift (safe boot)
- Repairing permissions and restarting
- Zapping the PRAM (command-option-p-r)
- Creating a new user account and logging into it
- Running daily, weekly, and monthly cron scripts using Onyx
- Deleting all caches for applications, fonts, system, and kernel
- Pulled everything out of the main Library (Macintosh HD/Library/), cleared caches, and restarted
From this I've concluded that it's probably a bug or corrupted file in the core system since safe boot, clean user accounts, and a bare library didn't fix the problem. The obvious solution would be to re-install the OS, but I'm afraid that the problem would just happen again since it has been occurring with multiple versions of the OS on two different computers.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I should add that this has been a slowly developing problem, one which is only getting worse. The first effect was a system-wide change in the default unvisited link color. Restarting the computer solved the problem whenever it would occur (about twice a day). The next to be affected was image colors, and once this happened for the first time, restarting the computer no longer fixed the problem.

Hey i dont know whats wrong with my macbook it keeps switching colour from blue to yellow, but mostly blue and i havent seen the real colours for like 2 weeks its been like this, everything that is supposed to be black is blue and occasionaly when it gets darker on screen it becomes yellow, might this be beacuse of i got boot camp or what? and i dont mean that normal issue u get on macbook pro thoose horizontal  lines blue and yellow, mine stay like this all the time, ive trie everything like calibrating coloue and display ETC, HELP PLS ,

    Hi The Gift,
    have a look here for a tri-boot Mac http://blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/02/how-to-triple-boot-mac-pro-with-os-x -fedora-windows/
And yes, you have to revert back to a single OSX harddisk in order to tri-boot.
Although for initial testing/experiencing I would propose to use VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ and put Fedora in a VM.
The i386 package should work just fine on your MacBook. Or you can use the 64-bit Fedora variant which is then called x86_64

  • Photoshop CC 2014 No Longer Displaying Blue In The Color Picker Or Workspace, Only Purples.

Photoshop CC 2014 is no longer displaying blue in the color picker and on screen, only purple, violet, magenta, etc. I think it started about 3 days ago. Our current model 2.9 GHz iMac with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB Graphics Card and 8 GB RAM is calibrated to 100% via Spyder 4 Express, and reflects that in every application except Photoshop CC 2014, so I know it isn't the monitor. Blue is the primary color we use in many of our designs, so this is of upmost importance. I really appreciate any help you could provide, If this isn't fixed ASAP, I don't know what we'll do.
    Thank you so much!

Ok, so old files are purple, but new files are blue.
I took a screenshot of my Photoshop work are using Cmd-Shift-3 and it places the screen shot as a png file on my desktop, which I upload with my reply via the Camera icon in the forum reply toolbar.
I loaded a new RGB/8 file, set the bottom status bar to indicate the color profile (sRGB) and made sure the file tab on the top is visible, so I can see it is RGB/8. Then I used Cmd-shift-k to show my Color Settings before taking the screenshot. The point is to try and see where the problem is coming from, so make a screenshot just like mine with your old purple file.

  • Why does my ssh tunnel drop when I switch on a system wide proxy

The subject says pretty clearly what is puzzling me. After I establish a connection via ssh and initiate a tunnel for email access through a corporate firewall (using Apple Mail as the client and POP3 for the protocol), I find that enabling a system wide proxy (socks5, http, and https) via the same ssh tunnel causes the email to stop working. Upon switching, the http proxy (Safari) works fine -- e.g. the tunnel is healthy. This confuses me. The ssh link which hosts several tunnels is fine. I am forwarding local port 10025 and 10110 on the tunnel to a mail server behind the firewall. The socks5 proxy and http proxy are running on local ports 11080, 18080, and 18080, respectively. Why is Apple mail paying attention to the proxy settings at all? It would seem that since Apple Mail makes no attempt to connect (via the Activity window) that the link is dead, however, turning off the proxy brings the email tunnel back to normal. Wierd. Any advice? This is running on a normal 10.4 (not server), but I don't think there are any significant differences in behavior. I asked on the networking discussion, but got no response.

Two things jump into my mind: poor WiFi signal strength on the desktop PC or a dirty OS installation on the desktop PC. I'm quite sure that this has nothing to do with the cisco VPN client itself.
Assuming that you reach your remote workspace through the cisco VPN client it might also be that the remote part (the VPN concentrator) gets congested and drops your connection but than other employees would complain as well (can be checked with your ICT guys).
The thing is: when you lose Internet connection on your laptop while surfing a web site and connection comes back again within no time you won't notice anything. If the same happens to a system constantly receiving encrypted packets and some are missing the VPN client will drop the connection. Completely different protocols (http/ipsec) that are differently prone to packet drops...

  • Unable to save column as system wide default

    Hi All,
I am in 11.1.1.1.6, I am trying to the save a column as system wide default in 11g but my changes are not getting saved or reflected?
This is what I did using the "weblogic" user name and password
    1. Pulled a column EmpName in the criteria
    2. Added an action link to that column, which points to another dashboard page Page1
    3. Saved as system wide default by clicking on save as system wide default for "EmpName"
    4. Restarted the presentation services.
Now when again logged in, and selected that column in my request, what I expect to see (when I run the request and go to results) is that navigtion applied on this column which will take me to the dashboard page Page1.
But this is not happening, What is that I am missing? Can anybody please let me know
    Thanks,
    Ronny

Thanks Deva for your reply, I don't have access to Oracle support, I'll have to go back to my client saying that this is a bug,
Can you please confirm that this bug which you mentioned is related to not being able to save the column properties as system wide default in obiee 11.1.1.1.6.0 version?
Also what i just found online is that this bug was fixed in 11.1.1.1.6.2? Can you please confirm this?
    Thanks,
    Ronny

I want to disable font-smoothing (anti aliase) system wide for mavericks operating system. I already turned off font smoothing for LCD from system preferences (in general).
But it still shows blurry for small fonts in my editor (Zend studio for Eclipse). And it make totally impossible to read small codes.

When I apply the Key to an evenly lit greenscreen, anything blue turns purple. How can I correct this?

There's way too much blue in that green screen

Try pulling down the spill level and reducing the spill tint. You're probably going to have to tweak the color selection manually.

  • "system-wide" proxy ?

I might not have the terminology quite right on this, I'm far from being an expert on the subject. That's why I'm turning to you guys !!!!!!!!!
I'm currently tethering my iPhone's connection via an app called PDANet which allows the computer to connect to a sort of 'wifi router' via an ad-hoc connection. While this doesn't quite work as they advertise it to (probably something I'm not doing that's getting auto 'automagically' in Windows/OS X), I am able to 'connect' to my iPhone and get offered an IP back when this app is running. I then launch the small socks server from the iPhone's term and voila I can use it to browse the tubes in firefox (with the proper settings).
Which is what brings me to my question: using this connection to my socks5 server running on my iPhone, I can resolve names and do http, at least. I'm just wondering, why this could be not set up as a 'system wide' service. In other words, all apps that want to connect to a certain IP/domain to a certain port, will do so as they always do. In other words why can't I set up a sort of service or daemon that uses this socks5 connection to the iPhone and sends back the data to the apps? As if my nameserver were the IP on the iPhone ? Or would I need something else running on the phone to provide that capability ?
Right now, when I dhcpcd, I get my IP from the iPhone, but nothing gets written in /etc/resolv.conf. I can only ping the iPhone's IP (which is the one I use to connect via proxy in firefox), and what I can only assume is my phone's IP on the 3G network, which starts with 10 (if that means anything to you experts.)....
Anyway, I'd like your thoughts on this..

The behavier I want to achieve is that I can hot swap proxy and non proxy networks without restarting the browser. This works under gnome because chromium reads the proxy config from gconf which gets updated on network change but this doesn't work without gnome.
Most of the time I'm on networks without proxies. Only in university I need them. A simple switch to activate them when needed would be nice.

  • System wide keychain?

Is there a way to store passwords in some sort of "system-wide" keychain, so that any user that logs into a machine (networked, or local) can have access to it? What I want to do is set up a keychain with the WPA key for all of the airports in my district, then put it on my image, so that way each user doesn't have to enter in the WPA key themselves every time they switch airports.

  • System wide semaphore

This is the only reference I could find on system wide synchronization (i.e. between processes):
      http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/4490
but it seems a bit dated, and one of the comments points to a potential bug.
Should I use the zip file attached there, write my own wrappers to Win32 mutexes, or is there a better library somewhere?
    Advance thanks,

The DevZone is a little old, but I just ran the code in LV 2009 SP1 on my Windows 7 machine and it worked just fine.
James West, is correct that the CloseHandle is not called, but I do not know enough about the WIN32 semaphores to know if that would cause an issue.
It would be easy enough though to add a call the the CloseHandle function to destroy the semaphore if you were worried about it.  Just makea new VI that calls the dll and have it run after you hit the stop button.

  • System wide keyboard commands not responding

My mac stops responding to system wide keyboard commands such as the Dashboard, Expose and Spotlight shortcuts. It also does not respond to Command-Tab to switch between applications. Hitting the keys for any of these leads to no response whatsoever.
I have run into this problem several times over the last few months, and the only solution I have found is to restart the computer. Initially, it appeared to be related to the ScreenSaver process crashing. I could look in the System Monitor and see that this process had gone red, when I forced the process to quit, the keyboard commands were restored. More recently, though, this has not been the case, and I have had to restart.
Any guesses what could cause this or suggestions on how to diagnose it? Thanks for any help.

    I'll answer in reverse.
When I've experienced the problem, I have tried other (older style) keyboards, and that did not resolve the problem.
I've never tried creating another user account.
I'll try disabling the screen saver, but part of the problem is that this issue is sufficiently intermittent that it take a while to determine if this has a benefit. I was hoping to find some more systematic way to diagnose what has been happening. Any suggestions along these lines?
Thanks for your help and interest.

  • Fix for "color shift" bug

I have discovered the fix for the iPhoto “color shift” bug (at least with OS X 10.3.9). For those who tried the solution of renaming the Generic RGB Profile, this idea was heading down the right track, but ultimately is not the answer (nor did it even work for me).
When you import photos into iPhoto 5, it does not assign a color profile to the pictures. Then when you edit one using the internal editor and go to save it, iPhoto sees there is no embedded color profile and thus it automatically embeds the Generic RGB Profile, and if that is not the color profile you are using for your screen (and it most likely is not), you will then notice that the colors of your original image have been altered.
Before I tell you the simple solution to this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you create a custom color profile for your Mac. You can use the included OS X one under System Preferences | Displays | Color | Calibrate, but I personally find this one difficult to use and it doesn’t offer very good end results for me. The color profile creation program that works the best for me is SuperCal. This program is a little gem and after you use it, it will seem like someone gave you a brand new display. The program is free to download, but after seeing how well it works, I hope some of you will pay the $19 registration fee. On a side note, when creating your color profile, I suggest you use a gamma setting of 2.2 (not the default Mac setting of 1.8). This will make your screen match most scanners, digital cameras, printers, web images, photo labs, etc. (which are all based on sRGB which has a gamma setting of 2.2).
    SuperCal can be downloaded here…
    http://www.bergdesign.com/supercal/
Okay, now you’ve created your calibrated color profile (let’s call it SuperCal) so pictures will now be accurate on your screen. So now here’s the fix for the color shift bug – it’s really so simple. Go into Applications | Utilities | ColorSync Utility. Under the Preferences icon, change the RGB Default from Generic RGB Profile to your new SuperCal one. Voila! That’s all there is to it. Now when iPhoto saves an edited picture, it will embed your custom color profile. So what was once a hated annoyance now actually becomes a feature so that all of your saved pictures will perfectly match your screen.
Since the Mac is supposed to be the easiest to use computer around, Apple should fix this so that when you change the color profile for your display, OS X also changes it for file embedding, but as it stands it 10.3.9, you must change this in both places manually.

I appreciate the tip to use gamma 2.2. I'd been wondering about that.
However, as others have mentioned, tagging your photos with a monitor profile is not the way to go.
The othe thing is that under Tiger, ColorSync Utility does not have a preferences section. It only has a devices section.
It is as if iPhoto doesn't know about any profile attached to any picture, whether it's from a camera, scanner, or PhotoShop, and there seems to be no way to tell it which profile to use.
And even after replacing the Generic RGB profile with the same one the images are tagged (by renaming the other profile Generic RGB), iPhoto still displays the images with more saturation and somewhat darker.
This is on an Apple Studio 17" CRT very carefully calibrated with SuperCal.
So I have to come to the conclusion that others have in other threads -- if you're concerned about good color accuracy, don't edit the color balance of your images in iPhoto. Leave that to PhotoShop.

Thank you so much! It was really driving me crazy since I often switch between different languages and have some text in multiple languages which always caused a total mess and the correct spelling automatically thing would just correct everything wrong.
