T400 with Windows XP, freezes on shutdown

Hi, I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 laptop (originally with vista) and installed Windows XP on it. I installed all the drivers one by one from the lenovo website, and verything works nicely- except for one hitch. When I go to shutdown or restart, it starts shutting down and then at the screen "windows is shutting down" everything freezes in place. I cant move the mouse and it won't shutdown no matter how much time I give it. So I have to manually shut it down using the power button. I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before and know of a fix? Thanks very much,
Thio

I'm reviving this post since I'm having the same issue.  Windows XP and hangs on during shutdown.  Yesterday I installed around 30 updates using the ThinkVantage program. Maybe is the Power Management Driver, BIOS update, who knows.  Any help will be really appreciated. Thanks.

I also have same exect problem for my T400 (after installing new audio driver).
No fixes found yet, but system restore (prior to new audio driver installation) at safemode worked for me.
(since windows can't shutdown normally on regular mode).
Hopefully this helps.

I've ordered T400 with windows vista(without XP downgrade). Will I be able to install windows xp on it? I mean will you provide drivers for windows xp too? I understand hybrid graphics switching does not work on XP but apart from that, will there be XP drivers for sound, graphics, card slots etc. ?
another quick question, can I expect 3 hours of battery life with a 4 cell battery in balanced mode with wifi, bluetooth on?
    thank you.

  • Creating recovery media for T400 with Windows 7

I have a brand new T400 with Windows 7 Pro in factory condition.  I purchased a larger hard drive and extra RAM to install myself.  I successfully added the RAM, but I'm having trouble creating the recovery media to transfer to the new hard drive.  When I go to ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, I only have the option to create Rescue Media, not Recovery Discs.  I was able to create 1 CD with the Rescue and Recovery media on it, but not the OS, applications, etc.
Am I missing something?  Is there a way for me to create the Recovery discs and thus actually use the hard drive I bought (and have back up in the event of a hard drive failure)?
    Thanks in advance!

    Coyotered, welcome to the forum,
as you have a factory install you should see in the start menu an entry for Lenovo Tools, has three red blobs as an Icon, click on it and it will open a window offering you several options including creating restore media. Alternatively you can open Computer and double click the Q drive, this should then offer you the opportunity to create the discs.

  • Download Itunes 10 64bit with Windows 7 "Freezes"

I have attempted downloading Itunes 10 64bit on my new ASUS PC with Windows 7. It starts to download then "Freezes" at about 20-25mbs. I am using agood broadband connection. Is the software available on anyother media ie: CD rom?

I have iTunes 10.2.1 running on ASUS Win7 64 bit.
After the upgrade to iTunes 10.2.1 I had major problems syncing. I had not had issues previously. I keep my iPhone locked but previously I could just plug it in and iTunes would start and the iPhone would sync. Now I have had many error messages, such as:
A folder was specified instead of a file.
A duplicate file name was specified.
    An internal device error occurred.
The required file cannot be found.
    An unknown error occurred (0xE8004006)
There are too many files open currently.
iTunes could not back up the iPhone "myphone" because the backup session failed.
A connection could not be established to the iPhone.
Not all errors occurred at once, but during the many hours I worked on the issues. My troubleshooting went in this order:
shut down iPhone and try again to resync -- still received connect errors.
reset iPhone (hold down top button and home button about 10 seconds) -- still errors.
deauthorize and reauthorize my computer -- still issues.
uninstall all apple programs in an order specified by apple and download and install the latest version of iTunes (latest was already installed, but reinstalled it) -- still errors.
Then I saw an entry by someone about unlocking the iPhone. I did this before connecting the iPhone to the computer and it connected. However, I still had other errors.
I configured iTunes to not sync with Outlook email, calendar, notes, etc. Only synced with Contacts. I also unchecked many of the apps to be synced. I finally got it to back up and complete a sync (according to the iTunes message). However, my Outlook contacts did not sync properly. That is, a new Outlook entry did not come across. Maybe other issues but not sure yet.
Also, the iTunes sync is very, very slow and iTunes appears to freeze during the sync. That is, the iTunes window cannot be repositioned and if I open another window and close/minimize it, the image remains on top of the iTunes window and does not clear.
Bottom line, it appears to sync now but with limited results. My apps now work after the second somewhat successful sync whereas after the first sync an app would open and then immediately close (except for the bundle of apps that came with the iPhone). I am not satisfied and all is not well. I am still experimenting and trying to regain all functionality.

  • Multiple ethernet networks show and the internet doesn't function on T400 with windows 7 64bit

Hello all we are having an issue with several T400 notebooks which i hope someone can help with.
the first symptom is no internet connection on the wired port-wireless has been turned off so it doesn't interfere with testing.
the network and sharing center shows multiple networks on the local area connection, one work (a domain), one public why the public one is there i don't know.
ipconfig shows it is getting an ip and dns through dchp and they are proper but two gateways are showing up one proper the other 0.0.0.0 this is where it is dying (i think)
i've done a route -p delete 0.0.0.0 but it doesn't persist through reboots for some reason.
so every reboot you have to run the route -p delete (administrative cmd prompt required) and then a release and renew and it works properly until it is next rebooted.
Does anyone know a way to get rid of the 2nd network?  Beside the "public network" shows local area connection same as beside the work network if i disable one it disables the adapter and neither works.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • T400s with Windows 7 RTM doesn't have undock option

I just purchased a T400s, scrubbed it completly and installed Windows 7.  I'm gradually installing Vista drivers in hope of getting some advanced functionality.  I also purchased a Series 3 advanced dock.
The Start menu doesn't show an undock option.
Is there a specific driver that enables this functionality?

Hmm, I was wondering how you were going to pull of the installation of ThinkVantage and the Service volume after a complete wipe with a retail copy of Win7.
Is there such a 'blessed' upgrade path?  Perhaps new OEM discs that have it for restore?

  • Laptop G 780 with windows 7 freezes

Good day. I apologize if I am posting in the wrong section. As a matter of fact, I did not found any section entitled to my Laptop series. Any way, my Problem is the following: often all freezes. I am able only to move the mouse. The pressure of any key produces no result. I am not able to open the "System Monitor" too. It seem that everything is in order, but this phenomenon occurs more and more frequently. What is the solution?
I purchased some months ago this Laptop with only MS-DOS preinstalled from Amazon.de. I installed Windows 7 from a System Builder Version, installing any Driver in the Lenovo cd.
    Thanks and best,
                                                                                   davide

    hi davide,
Can you run a diagnostic on the HDD/RAM.
    To create the diagnostic disc:
    a. On another machine, download the UBCD ISO and burn it using imgburn.
    b. Insert the bootable diagnostic disc that you just created into the defective computer and reboot
    c. On Power-up, press F12 and choose CCD/DVD to boot from the discx
    d. To test the HD, navigate to HDD > Diagnosis (for the tools, choose the diagnostic software depending on the brand of your HDD - i.e. choose Seagate for DOS if you have a Seagate HDD)
    e. To test the RAM, navigate to Memory > Memtest86+
Alternatively, you can follow this guide on how to burn the diagnostic software on a flashdrive,
If the computer doesn't freezes right away, you can run the diagnostics inside Windows (try Seatools for Seagate/Samsung drives and Data Lifeguard for Western Digital HDD's or a universal diagnostic like HD TUNE)

  • Restrict wifi to 802.11b on T400 with windows 7?

Hi Folks, I need to restrict connection of my intel 5300 to 802.11b at work (g is flaky for some reason). On XP, access connections would let me restrict my mode to 802.11b. In my new Windows 7 installation, however, I can't figure out how to make that happen. Is there any way to restrict my wifi to 802.11b in Windows 7? Thanks, a T400, 2764-CTO Intel 5300 AGN Windows 7

  • How to run Lenovo t400 with Windows XP in safe mode

    Hi guys,
I caught a Spyware Portection Virus this morning while i was doing research on fish disease. The virus isn't letting me run any programs except Internet Explorer. I have found the program to delete it but I need a way to run it so the best way is to run Windows XP on safe mode. So how do you run windows xp in safe mode. I can't access the Microsoft Configuration program (msconfig). Any ideas of how to work through bios to boot up in sade mode?

  • T400 with Windows 7 hangs on boot

This problem crops up every couple of months. After installing something, including Windows updates, the thing appears to re-boot properly. However it hangs immediately as soon as I try to launch any application. Nothing at all works. Sometimes I can re-boot in safe mode and roll back the system, but sometimes the only way to get the thing working is to hand it over to the techs who re-install Windows. Has anybody else seen this problem? I have googled it for months but come up empty. Thanks.

run the hdd diagnostic tool from the bios menu.

  • T400 shutdown unexpectedly with windows 7

Pls I need urgent help on this.
I have a T400. Machine Type is 7434-A43. It came with Windows XP which over the cause of use I have upgraded to Service Pack 3.
Yesterday, I did a new installation of Windows 7 Ultimate. Since then I have been having these intermittent 'shutdown' on the system. No blue screen, warning or error message shows. It just goes off like a light bulb.
I have installed all the necessary drivers, I have updated versions of both Power Manager and Power Management driver. So I dont know what the problem is. I searched the web and I discovered a host of other T400/T400s/T500 users who had the same problem after upgrading to Windows 7.
I never had this problem with windows XP. Also it seems the 'shutdown' doesn't happen on battery, only when I have an AC adapter in, battery installed or not. I have tried different Power Options to no avail. I have updated the BIOS to the latest yet to no avail.
I hope this problem has been solved by now. Pls I need urgent solution, the laptop is kind of useless right now.
    As I said earlier I use a T400, Machine Type is 7434-A43.

Trying to download itunes onto PC installed with windows vista. Download keeps getting to 99% with 1 second remaining and then freezes / does nothing? Any help appreciated.

I solved the problem! The updates orignally were downloaded to the C: drive of the server. I've since moved them to the E: drive and for some reason the Content folder in IIS didn't change the file path to the new WSUScontent folder.
The root cause for this was failing to use the UTILITY designed for this very purpose.
I edited the virtual directory settings in IIS and was able to put the correct path in.
You still need to use the UTILITY.. to fix all the other stuff you're still missing.
    In the %ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Tools folder...
    WSUSUTIL MOVECONTENT E:\WSUS E:\WSUS\MoveContent.LOG -SKIPCOPY
This problem was caused by moving the WSUS updates to a different local drive.
No. This problem was caused by IMPROPERLY moving the WSUS updates to a different local drive.

  • Intel Wimax 5350 not working with windows 7/t400

As someone who uses server 2008 on my desktop, when i received my t400 a few days ago i balked at the idea of using vista.  so i decided to download and install 64bit windows 7 (from vista 32bit...i did a clean install though...i believe).  i had not heard of anyone having trouble with wireless drivers in windows 7 and indeed intel states on their website that windows 7 will automatically install the drivers for the 5350 wireless card.
unfortunately, when windows 7 installation was complete the drivers were not installed and i did not have internet access.  so i had to take the usb wireless adapter from my desktop and plug it in to access the internet.  windows update did not fix the issue.  so i installed the visa 64bit intel drivers and windows told me that my wimax device was recognized, the drivers were installed, etc.
except the wireless card still wouldn't work!  currently under network adapters it is listen as local area connection 2/network cable unplugged/intel wimax link 5350.  i don't understand this...shouldn't it be listed as a wireless network connect as my usb adapter is?
i think the problem might be that under device manager, i do not have a driver for network controller, pci serial port, or pci simple communications controller.
this is quite frustrating and i really regret not having put more thought into this windows 7 installation.
    thanks for the help

I just got a brand new dell studio last week; i installed itunes 9 with the 64bit and for the first few days it worked just fine and now I will be watching a movie on itunes and my computer will freeze and go black, requiring me to do a manual shut down because i can no longer move my cursor or click anything. I've heard other problems with windows 7 and itunes. When i insert a regular DVD into windows media it works just fine. So far my computer only freezes with my itunes videos but who knows next week it could be my music too!
    HELP!

I had the same issue for windows 7. Right click on the iTunes setup file and run as administrator, it works.
