T61 or Windows Vista used up disk space so fast ?

Hi,
Just purchase a new T61 with 140GB hard disk running Windows Vista Business.  After installing Office 2007 Standard and Acrobat v8 Standard.  I realized that I am left with only 13.5GB space.
My personal data/files only take up about 20-25GB, including email files. What happen to all the storage space ?  Does Windows Vista take up large storage space that "eats up" all my space. ?
Can someone help.  thanks.

Hi,
I tried to load Rescue and Recovery console.  But not able to find the automatic backups option you mentioned ?  Where can I find this automatic backup option ?
But when I check for Properties of the hard drive.  Under the "Previous Versions" tab which looks like many duplicate backup.  Is this the automatic backups you are referring to ?

  • Installing Windows vista using boot camp..

I am trying to isntall windows vista using the boot camp and it says IMPORTANT: back up your disk before partitioning it or installing windows. I'm not quite sure on what that means or if i should continue in the boot camp because I don't know what that means......

*"I'm not quite sure on what that means"*
It means just what it says... backup your files prior to installing Boot Camp...in the event something goes wrong.

  • "Create alternate versions without using extra disk space" Really?

"Create alternate versions without using extra disk space" says Apple. But is that really true? Because, from what I understand, for Aperture's OS Integration (with the Media Browser) to work, Aperture has to render Previews of all your photos first. So, any alternate versions that you create, do exist on your Hard Drive in the form of an actual file (e.g. a JPEG).

As Ian notes, it's smaller than a RAW - also smaller than an alternate PSD you might make, or duplicating a background layer in a PSD.
Also though, you don't have to have previews for everything - I find what I do is leave automatic preview generation turned off and then just generate previews for images that I like the end result of. This lets you explore alternate versions with essentially no addition space used.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • Does filevault use more disk space?

Does filevault use more disk space than when not using it?  I'm running an SSD drive and need to keep usage to a minimum.  Thx

The difference is about 200 MB, regardless of the size of the volume.

  • Does increasing Exchange Storgage Quota use more disk space immediately?

Exchange does not use the space immediately, it just allows each mailbox to grow up to that size.
I would consider carefully before increasing the quota limit. One of the reasons for having a quota is to keep mailboxes to a manageable size. Every GB of size costs a heck of a lot more than just the GB on the spindle.

    Hi
The current policy is a 20Gb limit. Thanks to a post I made in this forum, I know that 21 of the users are nearing this limit.
Now I can increase the limit for those 21. Or I can change the policy to 25Gb for everyone. If I increase it to 25Gb for everyone, does Exchange use the disk space immediately? Lets say I had 1000 Gb free, and 150 users. Does increasing by 5Gb mean that 5x150 = 750Gb is now allocated? Or does exchange use the disk space as required?
    Thanks

  • I can't eject the windows vista 64-bit disk.

So I just upgraded to leopard today, and I want to run boot camp on it. I inserted the windows vista disk like it told me too, unaware that it cant be 64-bit and so it cannot load the setup, so I tried to eject the disk... no luck, I'm not sure what do do, I tried holding the APPLE, OPTION, O, and F key at startup, but it just keeps on trying to load the windows bootloader, where I get the error that the CPU is not compatable.
Thanks for any help I get.

command option o f is for booting into open firmware.
holding down the option key should let you use the eject key.
holding down the mouse button should open the optical drive.
and X should take you to OS X, yes.

  • Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk

    Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.
    http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-a6300-Desktop-PC-series/3644673/model/3671505/driver...
The next page just keeps looping or not proceeding when I put in details.
I can’t find anywhere to get hold of my copy of windows vista for this PC or get a disk to re-install on a new drive or fix the old detected drive, can someone please help!!

Just what size HD and is the drive Sata II or Sata III?

  • HT201612 When I installed Windows on my Macbook I allocated too much disk space to Windows, thus reducing the disk space available for MAC OS 10.6. Can I reallocate disk space without damaging existing Mac aplications, files, etc?  Thank you.

n I use Boot Camp (Assistant) to change the percentage of disk space allocated to each, without damaging existing MAC applications, files, etc.?  Thanks in advance.

make sure Windows will also have the room for updates, cache, page, hibernation, and growth with 20% free space; and Mac should also have 20% or more after accounting for growth.
Spend the $19 and save the headaches with CampTune but backup both - CampTune should help with that chore also but also TimeMachne and clone OS X.

  • Upgrading my T61 to Windows Vista Ultimate

    Hey all,
I have a T61, [email protected], 3GB RAM, 120GB HD with Windows Vista Home Basic.
I recently got a free copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (from my University) and I was wondering if I could install it...
Basically, I want to know that:
    1) If I install Windows Vista Ultimate off another DVD, will it wipe out my ThinkVantage integration? i.e. being able to use the ThinkVantage button during boot-up and so on.
    2) I know I can download the ThinkVantage Vista software again from the Lenovo website, but would I lose the ability to factory restore my HD from boot-up if I install Vista Ultimate from my new DVD?
    3) Is Vista Ultimate even worth spending the time and energy on for upgrading?
    Thanks!

Mostly.  You can restore some of it by downloading ThinkVantage software and the appropriate device drivers etc from the Lenovo support web sit for your ThinkPad model.

Yes, you will lose it.   There are ways around that, but they require some 3rd party software.
You can always do a factory restore, if needed, from the DVD set you should have created on recieving a ThinkPad.

I have installed it on all my Vista capable ThinkPads, in x86 or x64 version depending on the ThinkPad platfrom capabilities, and find it well worthwhile.

  • IPod shows as camera and will not let me use as disk space. Please Help!!

Okay, so i know that this has probably been asked before, but every similar question i read was a little different from my specific problem. Maybe someone on here can help me. :)) *crosses fingers*
I've had my iPod Touch since summer, and I just got a new laptop for Christmas. So I want to transfer my iTunes over to my new computer, of course. I read the tutorial on Apple Support, but when I went to drag my Library over to my iPod, it was showing up in My Computer as a camera, and will not let me use it as disk space. I've also followed the steps to stop the automatic Camera pop-up when I plug in my iPod. Yes, my iPod is set up on manual, so disk use SHOULD be enabled, correct? I am positive that I also have the latest iTunes software. AND my USB ports are up to date.
Sorry for the overly-thorough problem description, but I have read too many of the similar posts, and I know all the usual suggestions. But seriously, any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to say that you cannot use an iPod Touch as an "external" drive, unlike the "Classic" etc. which I believe have this feature.
To transfer your library you will have to back it up to disc(s), a different type of HD or use a network to send the files over.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • Hot Sync problems with Windows Vista using a Tungsten E2

Need Help solving a hot sync problem. Have a Tungsten E2, about a year old. Use Windows Vista OS. Can not sync to desktop. It worked fine for awhile then stopped sync'ing. Have reinstalled Palm Software, Have downloaded Palm 6.2. Have deleted all 3rd party apps,,,and their back up files. Particulary,,,,Epocrates apps, Took over my PDA. Installations and updates gets to synchronizing Calender and 'freezes' have left it on overnight figurng lots of data,,,,no progress. I need help. I really enjoy using this equipment.  I use my PDA for all my scheduling of work shifts appts etc. I would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks in advance. Mike.
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Hi..  Welcome to the Palm forums.  So if I am understanding you when you try to sync it goes to calendar and freezes and never completes the sync.  That being the case the first thing you want to do is go to the conduits and turn off calendar then sync and all should be successful, except calendar will not sync.  What this indicates is that you have corrupted data in your calendar, most likely on the E2.  Do a google search on your computer for a utility 'dbfixit' and download it to your computer.  Extract it so you have the dbfixit.prc file and double click on it to put it in the installer.  Then, insuring the calendar conduit is off, sync to install it.  Once installed run dbfixit.  This utility is free or can be purchased for (I believe) 12.95.  The free version will search for corruption and problems let you know where they are and you will have to manually fix or delete them.  If you register it, when you run the utility it will find the errors and fix them as well.  Once all errors are fixed, turn the calendar conduit back on and you should be able to sync.

Can you be specific as to what drivers are not installing? An issue that can be had when doing PNPEnum is that child devices of something that does not have a driver installed are not visible to the PNPEnum. A way to get around that is you can force the
injection of drivers that are not getting installed. Something like you can add a second Inject Driver step but, have it be a selection profile of drivers that always get missed because they are children.
