Tagan 480W and MSI K8N SLI-FI

Just about to install a Tagan 2force 480W PSU into an MSI K8N SLI-FI motherboard. This board requires 3 power connections, the 24pin ATX, 4 pin for CPU and there's a 4 pin molex (PCIE_PW1) connection for PCI-Express VGA cards.
From the Tagan website, I thought that this power supply had a blue 4pin connector to use for this PCIE_PW1 connection. It doesn't, it only has the two 6pin PCI-Express connections.  Can I use one of the white molex power cables that would normally be used for drives?
This PSU also has a GND/RTN grounding cable. Do I put this under one of the screws fixing the motherboard to the case?
Thanks

Hello !
Yes, you can use the standart connectors for your VGA Cards, but it should be the only device attached to this power string. Do not use it in combination with other devices as power source for your card. I do not know exactly if your PSU has two 12V Power Rails, but if so, try to combine them to one 12V Rail. There should be a switch on your PSU to do that.
You can install the grounding cable to any place in the case, i would not put it under the motherboard, i suggest mounting it to a HDD cage.

  • Is there a big difference between MSI K8N SLI and MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboa

i am a bit tight on budget, so I was wondering if I should get the MSI K8N SLI motherboard instead of the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard (my previous choice),.......what do u guys say ?

    Hi,
Note that he is not talking about the Neo4 versions, looks like in the US MSI has different products:
    Here is the K8N SLI:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=681
And here is the K8N NEO4 SLI:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4/SLI&class=mb
One has Sound blaster, the other does not.
Besides, K8N SLI Platinum has only one LAN.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=641
While the Neo4 Platinum has two.
    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb
A bit confusing right !? Remember that this forum is accessed by people all over the world.
The thing is that the Neo4 and the related non-Neo are using the same BIOS AFAIK.

  • MSI K8N SLI and Athon 64 X2 4200+: some problems

    Hi from France
I've try to upgrade my computer all day long, and still have no solution about this..
    Mainboard: MSI K8N-SLI
    Processor: Athlon 64x2 4200+
    RAM: CORSAIR 1Go *2 PC 3200
Graphic card: MSI X1950 Pro 256 Mo Radeon
2 HD (WD 250 Go and WD 160 Go) on IDE 133 (supplied by the mainboard)
OK, I've connected everything, everythings seems to be well started, the CPU is recognized as ATHLON 64 X2 4200+, and I try to go into BIOS by pressing "DEL", as it is written on my screen (just beside "F11 to boot sequence)
Nothing happened, it seems that it freezes...
When I start the computer, I hear my HD starting, the graphic card also, everything...
    But what's going on ??
I'm a little bit disappointed, it's not the first time I do this kind of upgrade...
I've rebuilt my computer with "old" configuration MSI K7N L Athlon XP 3000+ and MSI 6600 Geforce
    Every thing is ok

  • MSI K8N SLI Mobo (with 24 bit SB Live!) and XP64, no driv

There are no drivers to be found anywhere for the onboard 24 bit SB Li've! chip on the MSI K8N SLI platinum motherboard. It's quite confusing really, seeing how it's a board designed for 64 bit processing yet there are no drivers for the Li've! chip. I'm assuming the drivers are in Beta development, is there a tentati've release date, even if it's November, it's better than not knowing anything. I love my 64 bit system but it really stinks having no sound.
    Jan Gonsalves

As I stated in the original post, I am looking for 64 bit drivers for the Sound Blaster 24 bit Li've! chip that is onboard the MSI K8N SLI Platinum Motherboard. The "preview" drivers, as noted in the release notes:
    (http://preview.creativelabs.com/Lists/Announcements/DispForm.aspx?ID=6&Source=http%3A%2F%2Fpreview%2Ec reativelabs%2Ecom%2Fdefault%2Easpx)
    2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
One of the following supported audio cards:
    Creative SoundBlaster Li've! (except Li've! 24-bit)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy (except Audigy LS)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 (except Audigy 2 NX)
These do NOT support Li've! 24 bit. In fact, on the Discussion board at the preview website, a moderator wrote this:
    (http://preview.creativelabs.com/Lists/General%20Discussion/DispForm.aspx?ID=344&Source=http%3A%2F%2Fpreview%2 Ecreativelabs%2Ecom%2FLists%2FGeneral%2520Discussi on%2FAllItems%2Easpx)
"It is not a site for asking for the Li've 24-bit/Audigy LS/NX drivers (32-bit or 64-bit). If you want those drivers, post at the official Creative forum or contact technical/customer support. That will get noticed. No one reads this site except for the people involved in the 64-bit driver preview for hardware listed in the release notes."
So, according to that email is says this list is responsible for producing 64 Bit drivers for the SB Li've! 24 bit chip. I would like to know which group is responsible for the drivers and when these drivers are TBA. Like I said, rough estimates are fine, I just want to know SOMEONE is working on it.

  • MSI K8N SLI Platinum and 4x512 DDR

    Hello everybody,
My problem is with a 2nd kit of 2x512 MB DDR I bought recently. I had a pair of  Kingston KHX3200ULK2 512 MB and unfortunately this model was discontinued, so I got another 2x512 MB DDR, this time Geil UltraX which should work @ 5-2-2-2-1T.
When leaving everything on auto, the motherboard sets the 4 modules at DDR333 with the tightest timing. I want to run them in DDR400, so I set them up manually @ 5-2-2-2-2T. In this config, everything is unstable. Sometimes the system doesn't boot, sometimes I get blue screens, etc.
Can somebody help me with some ideas ? The system appears to run stable with timings setup at 6-4-4-2-2T, but I really paid a lot on those modules and I'd like to squeeze the most out of them.
    Thanks in advance

  • MSI K8N SLI and AMD FX-60

Can someone please tell me if the AMD FX-60 CPU is compatible with the
    MSI K8N SLI (MS-7185) version 1.0 motherboard?
If I upgraded to this processor would its performance be limited by
the speed of my memory. I have 2.5 Gb PC3200 Corsair RAM.
    Many thanks!

    Quote
Yes I'm sure its back at 200MHz ie PC3200 but I don't know why the numbers are low. What else would you recommend that I use for benchmarking memory?
From the below statement I thought you meant you tried to run all 4 memory sticks at 200Mhz, I guess I misunderstood?
    Quote
However, I tried it with all four sticks and it also works in dual mode but only in 2T command rate. Although it went into 167 MHz memory frequency but I changed it to 200MHz to get PC3200 (400MHz).
Obviously from the sceenshot you have 2GB and 2 sticks and are at 1T, but what about 3GB.  I thought you meant running all 4 sticks at 200Mhz from what you said.  That is why I said the score is low.  Sandra is pretty linear when it comes to the bandwidth test.  If memory speed goes down from 200 to 167 that's about 17% reduction, add in 1-3% for 2T in Sandra, and you get very close to your 18% reduction in bandwidth for 3GB test.  Since it sounded like you said you adjusted 3GB to 200Mhz then the score would be too low for the 3GB run, as it appears it is still 166 at 2T.  If that's the case the score is pretty much right on the money.
BK's recommendations are good for other benchmarks, make sure to try real world apps though too.
Before you get into overclocking read some of the overclocking guide(like down in the overclocking modding section on the forum)

  • So, is a -5V pin supply still required for MSI K8N SLI Platinum or not ???

I am looking to buy a new custom made computer. I want the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard for it. The problem is that the non-USA page claims that it requires the -5V pin supply. I have read many threads on this same topic, but havent found a definitve answer.
Is the -5V rail still needed or not ???
I read somewhere that USA models dont require it, as its not mentioned on the USA site. Well my one will most probably be from Taiwan.....
Is there a check, through which I can confirm whether the motherboard my local hardware store is selling, requires a -5V pin supply or not???
lastly, is that a specific model number, from which onwards, the requirement is no longer needed ????
    thanx in advance

I agree with SAB only because mine has been rock solid for quite some time.  If I could afford it, I would have purchased SAB's PC Power & Cooling 510 model.
The only other model that seems to have the -5v rail are the OCZ psu.  However, I have noticed a lot of users with tagan's and have yet to see someone complain about this psu.  Im running the 12v rail as a single rail at 30a...you can experiment with the dual rails and it will adjust to the need of your mobo up to 20a on each rail but then the other rail gets only 10a (at least I think thats how it works).
The tagan 480w u22 was built for the future:
    1.  has a 20/24 pin main power connector - shielded
    2.  a 4/8 pin cpu power connector - shielded
    3.  2 - 6pin vga connectors - shielded
    4.  4 - sata hdd connectors
    5.  Whisper quiet - you just dont hear it
    6.  12v rail at 30a - peak load at startup to 35a for 60 seconds
    7.  70% to 73% efficiency rating
Is it enough juice?  It seems to me that the manufacturers have realized that pretty soon we will have to purchase $500 psu's just to keep up.  So IMO, the manufacturers seem to be getting the point.  The new 90nm AMD chips take less power than the 130nm chips...and the new 7800gt video cards take up less power than the 6800gt video cards.  In the future, AMD will be coming out with a 65nm chip, which will need even less power.
So I think Im right at the sweet spot with the 12v@30a and its also flexible enough to switch to a dual rail system if I need that feature in the future.  Tagan does make a 530w and 580w psu too, but they are not as quiet and you only get 2 more amps on the 12v rail as you go up the line.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Very, very low sound from MSI K8N SLI Platinum

The sound from my MSI K8N SLI Platinum nForce 4 is so low that i must set the volume control on max and the speakers on max to hear anything. I tried other speakers with the same result. The speakers are amplified.
    What can i do?

Well for a start you could search the forum as this problem is now well known. I'm not getting at you but I know how frustraing it is wanting someone to respond with an answer, and you don't have to wait if the problem has already been discussed!
The problem is that MSI decided to specify that the 24 pin supply must have -5v to support the creative chip. This is in contradiction to atx 2.2, and other PSU specs for 24pin supplys, which say the pin in question is NC (no connection).
What you need is a dual standard 20/24 pin supply.
Theres is a FAQ about this on the diamond forum, but I'm not sure if unregistered Platinum SLI users can read them anymore!
According to the FAQ MSI are promising US diamond users the chance to RMA their diamond boards when modified boards whcih don't require the -5v supply are availble. This isn't much use to us european Platinum SLI users.
I have a Tagan 480w which is dual standard 20/24 pin supply.

  • MSI K8N SLI - Freezes Randomly - Need Help!!!

    Hi,
Can anybody help me? My PC keeps freezing and sometimes BSOD'ing on me and i have no idea what the hell the reason is. I've tried changing graphics drivers, sound drivers, checked for bios updates and all the usual stuff. I've had a scou around the net and these forums and quite a few people seem to be having this problem and appears to be related to the PCIe Graphics. Not sure if this is the case but a lot of peole report this. One person said it was his audigy card and on removing it the problem went away. But, I don't fancy sacrificing my audigy card for the onchip sound if I can find a work around.
Is it the motherboard at fault with the PCIe interface or the Audigy or something else? If anyone has any ideas it would be fantastic!

  • Is the Hiper Type- R 580 modular PSU compatible with MSI K8N SLI Platinum?

Hey guys, i just recently bought a Hiper Type R 580w PSU after my old PSU went bad.
I installed the new PSU a few hours ago and came across a problem, nothing shows up on screen.
When i turn on the computer, the green light is constantly on including my dvd/rw light.
I double checked everything were connected properly and everything seemed to be connected properly.
The cpu's fan are running properly including the graphics cards and the case's fan but i can't pinpoint whats causing the the green activity light to light constantly including the dvd/rw.
I also tried resetting CMOS but it didn't fix the problem.
So now i'm starting to wonder if it's to do with compatibility issues between the Hiper Type R PSU and my K8N SLI Platinum motherboard.
So i just wanted to know if the Hiper Type R 580 PSU is compatible with the K8N SLI platinum?
I would grately appreciate any assistance.

    In short no.
The Hiper Type- R 580 does NOT have a -5V supply line
Although the -5V requirement has been removed from some MSI designs, the MSI page for the K8N SLI Platinum http://msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703525&cat_id=77 states:

    • For ATX 12V power connection, it should be greater than 18A.
    • For this model, you must use the power supply that with a -5V pin supply.

  • MSI k8N SLI Platinum - dead??

    Hello,
I have started the PC as per usual. Pushed the power button... nothing. Then again... nothing. Then I swithed off from the switch near the mains entry. and switched on... PC started however I get nothing on the screen. No beeps.
I have an Antec Truecontrol 2.0 power supply, an MSI K8N SLI Platinum (socket 939) with AMD Athlon, 2 GB Corsair TWINX Ram, three HDDS SATA, Raptor 75GB as Primary (C:) and another two WDS. Video Card: BFG 7800GTX+ 256MB OC, PCI - Express.
System has functioned Ok for three and a half years at least. I have replaced the Northbridge Fan from the beginning with a Blue heatsink - I believe Zalman. No temp issues. No overclocking, I am not using any commander modes etc etc.
When I look at the D-Bracket I get Memory Init Error (RED-GReen-Red-Red). I am pretty sure it is not the RAM. I pulled the RAM, used only one stick... same error.
I pulled the video card out. Then interestingly the system reaches the phase just before booting and the D_Bracket shows Floppy Init error (Green-Red-Green-Green). I tried moving the video card to the second PCI -ex - I also reach the Floppy Error point. I put in a crappy PIC-Ex video card - I reach the same Floppy init point - the floppy actually seeks but does not try to read. Unfort I forgot where I put the Monitor adapter thingy so I can;t check if I get anything on the screen with the crappy PCI-Ex video card. Will get it... soon...
I have a hard time determining whether it is the Video card or the mainboard. I have pulled the battery out, left overnight, pushed the BIOS reset... nothing helped. With Video Card in PCI-Ex slot 1, I get the memory init error. With the card in PCI-Ex slot 2 or with no card or with crappy PCI-Ex, I get to the Floppy Init point.
Could it be that at that point I would be getting a VGA error that I cannot see on the screen ? Why then NO BEEPS? Does this Mobo model not beep, just uses the D-Bracket?
It is important - if it is the mobo I am done for, I have to buy Mobo, RAM, CPU... $1,000. If it is the Video card I may find something 1 slot wide and similar to the BFG ...
Can anyone help narrow this please ?
BTW on the screen I get NOTHING, if I pull out the cable the monitor says - check connection, if I plug it in the monitor goes to power saving.
    Thank you Heaps

Put a stick of memory in there of el-cheapo brand.

Found out what the prob was - the BFG 7800GTX was DEAD. RMA-ed the card. the MSI Mobo is Ok

I no longer have the manual and I need to clear the CMOS on my MSI K8N-SLI Board. Actually, my issue is that nothing comes up on my monitor screen. I was 95% certain that it was the video card which was an old MSI NX6600 256MD eLite nVidia vid card. I'm in China at the moment and I bought a "Colorful" 9500GT 512MB vid card to replace it, however it does work. It may work for up to 2 minutes, and then prior to finishing the initial boot up, it says that the computer is placed into safe mode due to overclock???? I've never overclocked before....
