Taking a Mac purchased in Australia to Canada

Hi,
Could anyone advise if there are any problems taking a Mac Mini or iMac purchased in Australia to Canada? i.e. powersupply voltages and international support.
My friends are really interested in getting a new Mac for their family but are moving to Canada in the new year and would like some assurance it will work in both countries.
Thanks.

Hi wjharvey,
All LCD iMacs and mac mini's sold in Australia will work in Canada, however the reverse is not true - for some reason, Apple decided to make the first iMac G5s sold in Canada, US and Japan will only work on those countries' 100-110V supplies.
They will need a power cable converter or new power cables, but they are easy to find.
The DVD drive in the machine only has 5 changes available, which may be a problem, but there's not much that can be done about that (without warranty voiding drive swaps and firmware flashes).
They may also need a different modem to comply with legal requirements, and they shouldn't set the Airport to use Channels 12-13, which are legal in Australia, but not north america, but aside from that, there won't be any issues.

I am taking my US purchased MacBook to Australia. Is it safe to plug the computer into the 240volt 50 cycle electrical outlets there(with plug adapter) or do I need to connect through a voltage converter?

  • Online American Mac Stores That Ship to Canada

    Hi,
I'm interested in purchasing a Mac Mini. Are there any American online Mac stores that ship to Canada? I want to take advantage of the strong Canadian dollar, and Apple computers are cheaper in the US.

  • I have an ipad that I purchased in Australia and my iTunes account is Australian, but when I try and watch Australian TV shows on Australian websites it says that the content is not available because I am not in Australia.

Please help! I have an ipad that I purchased in Australia and my iTunes account is Australian, but when I try and watch Australian TV shows on Australian websites it says that the content is not available because I am not in Australia. How can I fix this?

Are you using a proxy server to access the net?
Or another cause could be that your router thinks it's in its home country (probably china)
I just don't know how to fix it. There's a way but I don't know enough to advise.
You could try googling your router model and 'wrong country' or keywords like that and see if something comes up.

  • First Mac Purchase - iMac i3 - Please Advise

Hello, I am very close to purchasing my first ever Mac, but I am unsure of which direction to take. I am debating between the iMac i3 - 21.5 inch base model with 8gb of ram, or the next model up. I know that the hard drive is double, the processor is a little bit faster, and the video card is better. I am hoping there are some Mac gurus who might help with some insight is this decision. I will be mainly using it for work, but also for some light gaming, nothing serious. Is the $250 worth the 3.20 i3, 1TB HD, and the better graphics card? Or, should I increase the ram on the base model from 4gb to 8gb? Any suggestions on above mentioned information or any other relevant information would be much appreciated, thanks.

Thank you all for your quick responses. As far as the first respons goes, I just do not know enough yet about the OSx applications, so I am really not sure yet what applications I may be using. However, I do edit/add new products to the web for the company I work for. It's primary used will be for work, but the web editing I do is nothing too crazy. Mainly just editing photos and writing the info in HTML.
In reference to the second response, that was the way I was leaning. I am unsure if I can convince my wife to go up to the i5 model though, ha. I do want to check out some games on I though, even though I have a ps3. I also may want to run Windows with the parallel program. I guess I'm just trying to make the most informed decision since I do not know a lot about the macs and which one is the best value.
The third response has almost convinced me now to go with the base model. The bottom line for me is $250 is not a huge deal, but $450(to go to the i5) is getting closer to being a big deal. To me, it seems like the faster processor and the graphics card are worth $250 and the hard drive is a bonus as well. I definitely liked the point of getting an external drive, but how much am I going to spend for a 500gb external drive? Will I be getting closer and closer to the original $250 difference I could have spent to go with the nicer model? Once again thank you for responding, and I hope to hear some more insightful thoughts to help me with my first Mac purchase, cheers.

  • Bootcamp & Mac purchase

Bootcamp & Mac purchase: just bought song in boot camp. Expect it will not be in Mac. I can copy song folder to Mac
but will it be accepted? Will album art be there?
I could not go other way because Vista does not see Mac files, so all purchases should be with Vista?

Expect it will not be in Mac.
    You're right, it won't be.
I can copy song folder to Mac but will it be accepted?
Drag the song into the iTunes window and it should be, yes.
    Will album art be there?
Album art from the iTunes Store is kept in a separate folder, so you'll have to copy it separately.
I could not go other way because Vista does not see Mac files, so all purchases should be with Vista?
Or buy them on the Mac side and use one of the various means available to copy them to the Windows partition, including burning a CD, copying the track to a USB flash drive, or getting drivers that allow Windows to mount a Mac volume.

Are you saying you want to check the hd for problems?
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
    Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid  Tab.
    Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

  • Prepaid card purchased in Australia, use in US acc...

    Howdy...
Can a prepaid card purchased in Australia in Australian dollars be used to recharge a US-based account which is charged in US dollars?
If so, what is the exchange rate that would be used?  Any weird taxes (like vat) subtracted from the conversion?
    Thank you.

    Itunes cards are country specific.
U.S. cards need to be redeemed with a U.S. account, on the U.S. store and physically from the U.S.

  • Befuddled second-time Mac purchaser

New Leopard Mac purchased. I had a Panther which developed an aversion to getting online. Now need to transfer files to my new machine, but Intel Leopard is snubbing PPC Panther so I'm having to transfer files via a storage hard drive unit.
    Problems:
    1. I can't figure out how to transfer info like iPhoto Albums, iCal daily notations and the like. No problem transferring my music into iTunes.
    2. I can't seem to get Leopard to stop going directly to Admin Account instead of the managed one I want to work from after a Shutdown. (Bypass separate log in page and go right to my secondary account. Can't remember how I got Panther to do this, but seem to remember it just did it if I shutdown from the secondary anyway.)
    3. With Panther I went months before finding out about things like YASU and Permissions Repair. What maintenance programs are considered must-haves for Leopard? Is YASU still needed? Couldn't find it on VersionTracker. (I already installed new versions of Little Snitch and ClamAV.)

I went to Accounts, did the Login Options and was given the choice of changing my password and altering Parental Controls. That was it. No option to stop Admin being auto chosen to open when turning on the computer. (However, I just did Software Update yesterday to ignore GarageBand and iMovie. So naturally those two items showed up with the huge MB files waiting for my dial up to download. sigh
What with two screen freezes yesterday (one requiring a hold-start-button restart, maybe I got a lemon Leopard? Does that option show up on anyone else's OSX10.5.3?
I've only got until July 5 to return this if need be and though this will definitely be my last Mac purchase, I'm not ready to go back to Windows yet.
