"task blocked" issue in linux guest

Host: Win 7 Pro 64-bit
VBox: 4.3.12
Guest: Oracle Linux 5.6 64-bit
Every so often I get this popped up on my vbox guest console.
What's more puzzling is I can pretty well predict when its going to happen.  Everything else on the host system slows to a crawl. Even to the point of keyboard response delays and long delays even getting task manager fired up.  Sometimes the only relief is to shut down the guest, and if I do an ACPI shutdown from the guest console window menu, even that can take several minutes.
I never actually work at the guest console. Instead, use putty to connect to the vm, exactly like I would to connect to my live servers in the data center.
Any ideas on what is going on?

Hi Amit,
Can you check whether the MAC address is persistent on the VM?
Configure a static MAC for the VM using VM properties.
Delete the *persistent-net.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ and reboot the VM.

  • Task blocked for more than 120 seconds

Oracle Linux 5.6 on VBox 4.3.12, on Windows 7 Pro, 64bit with 16gb of memory.
I've been picking at this problem for quite some time.  Posted some time back on the vbox.org forum, then later on the OTN Vbox forum when I discovered it.  No help there so thought I'd try attacking it from a Linux point of view.
    First off --
    oracle:+ASM$ uname -a
    Linux vbdwprod.vbdomain 2.6.18-238.1.1.0.1.el5 #1 SMP Thu Jan 20 23:52:48 EST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Here's the problem.  After a VM has been up for a while it throws the following:
And the real frustration comes in that I can anticipate when it will throw this error because everything -- and I mean everything - else running on the host comes grinding to a halt.  Most other applications will start showing "Not responding".  Even if they don't show that in their title bar, they do stop responding.  Even getting Windows Task Manager up can be painfully slow, and when it does come up, it shows no stress on the CPU - still up around 95% idle.
I'm thinking some sort of clock timing issue between the guest and host, but that is really outside of my expertise.  I do add 'divisor=10' to my grub.conf as part of the initial build of all my vm's.
So, does anyone have any ideas what all this means and how I might address it?

    Dude! wrote:
The divisor parameter helped to reduce CPU idle consumption. OL 5.6 ships with the UEK kernel as default, which is a tickless kernel, and does no longer need the "divisor=10" parameter that was used in the 5.5 and earlier versions.
What are the implications for my kernel and version?  This vm was built to be my personal test counterpart to one of my 'live' servers, so I wanted to keep kernel and version as close to that as I could.
When did you start to experience this problem? Was this working before or is this a new installation?
It's been intermittent, but experienced on 3 different host machines.  I haven't kept such close records, but if I had to guess when it started it would be at one of the upgrades to vbox.  I'll dig back through my posting history at virtualbox.org and see if I can spot anything relevant.
If it worked before, chances are that you have a hardware issue, e.g. dying disk or faulty memory. Or perhaps your virtual disk got corrupted or someting else is causing problems. Since you are on Windows, there is antivirus, defragmetnation tools, etc. that can cause very strange affect to systems inside a virtual machine.
Yeah, the first time I brought this up on virtualbox.org, they insisted it had to be a corrupt hard drive on the host.  Wouldn't even entertain the possibility of anything else.  Never mind the fact that it was occurring on two different machines at the time, never mind the fact that absolutely nothing else on either machine indicated any HD issues - including a very thorough Windows disk analysis.
Personally I have not been too happy with VirtualBox
I've had a love/hate relationship with it ever since I switched from VMWorkstation.
4.3 and found 4.2 more compatible and usable, but I think before anything else you might want upgrade to 4.3.18 and also update to OL 5.11 and see if the problem persists. Both tasks are very easy to accomplish.
Given my usage of this VM, I'd have to think long and hard about version changes on the OS.  Perhaps a point upgrade like that really isn't relevant to my concerns - I just don't know enough about that area.
Changing the version of VBox is definitely a possibility.
One other thing that might factor in somehow, and seems to relate to the link posted by Wadhah DAOUEHI, above.  When the machine is in this state and I am finally able to get Task Manger and Resource Monitor open, the one thing that seems "out there" is disk activity.  Resource Monitor will show the disk (C; drive on the host)  nearly maxed out, with over a million total b/sec attributed to vbox.exe.   That is several orders of magnitude greater than any of the other processes.
In one sense, I think I'm more concerned about why this is having such an impact on all other operations on the host.  The error as reported by the linux machine seems to be a bit of a transient, eventually getting cleared and things moving one.  But as I said, until that occurs, I can't really get anything else done either.

  • "Hyper-V-specific video device" in Linux Guests

Hello, my question is regarding poor video performance on Linux guests. I am using Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and I have a couple Linux guests - CENTOS 7 and Ubuntu 14.04. Both installs have the desktop environments enabled, and I have connected to them through
the virtual machine management console and through VNC. In both cases, graphics performance was pretty terrible, much worse than the Windows guests I have. For example if I bring up a YouTube video it is pretty smooth in a Windows guest but extremely slow
and choppy in the Linux guests. The cursor movement is also lagging and not smooth.
    According to
    this document, and
this document both CENTOS 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 feature a "Hyper-V-specific video device" which is described as providing "high-performance graphics and superior
resolution for virtual machines." I understand these versions of CENTOS and Ubuntu have LIS built in and I should not have to install anything further to take advantage of the features LIS provides. When I check the system details from within
the guest, the graphics adapter is reported as "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits)", which I'm guessing is just a generic or default device.
I have searched many places online and in this forum for similar questions. A few I have found could be outdated or might not apply in this case.
I don't think I need remoteFX or vGPU.

You might want to verify that the Hyper-V specific video driver is, in fact, loaded and in use. Do this at a shell prompt by running "lsmod | grep hyperv". See if "hyperv_fb" is in the list of modules.
Also, if you are using the VM Connection window in Hyper-V Manager, check to see whether you have just a single cursor, or whether you have a double cursor, where the 2nd cursor trails behind the 1st cursor.  If the Hyper-V specific video driver is
loaded and in use, you should have only a single cursor.
All of that said, our goal with the Hyper-V specific video driver was to do much better than the performance you get with an emulated video frame buffer, but not necessarily to achieve video performance on par with real hardware.  Our focus with Hyper-V,
and with Linux on Hyper-V, has been server and datacenter environments, where a high level of video performance isn't super important.  This decision to not put focus on video performance is a business choice based on the markets we are most pursuing,
and not a fundamental technical issue or limitation.

  • Very Strange Network Issue With Two Guests on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster

Hi all.  We're having a odd issue with two guests on our 2012 R2 failover cluster.
In a nutshell, if we shutdown a particular server (I'll call it Server A) another totally different server (Server B) on the same node loses it's network connectivity to the domain. If we start server A back up, network connectivity returns on server B.
At first I thought server A might be running a service that was somehow linked to server B, so I decided to disable server A's NIC.  Interestingly, that had no affect on server B's connectivity.
The next step I tried was pausing server A and again, no adverse affect on server B's connectivity.
Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
One other clue is that if I ping server B from either of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster, I never lose network connection to server B.
So I would suspect this is some network issue on the cluster, but I'm kind of at a loss where to go from here.
Has anyone seen this behavior before or does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions I can try?
    Thanks!
    George Moore

    Hi Sir,
I'v never seen this before .
    >>Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
They are connecting to same virtual switch ?
First please run cluster validation to check if there is any error .
If it is ok , please try the following items for troubleshooting :
    1. shutdown  serverA   serverB
    2. then add another virtual NIC for serverB
    3. start server B  check if the issue happens to both "old" and "new" virtual NIC .
In addition , you can live migrate both A and B to another node , then try to live migrate A to the original node .
If the issue persists , I would suggest you to remove that virtual switch on both nodes then re-create them .

  • How to get the Hyper-V version/hostname from a linux guest?

    Hi,
I am running a custom Linux VM on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.
I need to get the version/hostname of Hyper-V from the running custom Linux guest. How can I do that?
I am having Integration Service 3.4 installed. Is there any option I can configure using Integration Services code?
What is the Linux kernel version in which Integrations Services code is ported? I hope 2.6.32. Is this correct?
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Linux Guest VLAN Settings lost after reboot

    Hi Guys,
last night a have seen a strange behavior with a Sophos UTM 9.204020 Linux Guest VM. (This VM is based on SUSE SLES v11? i think)
So i have Setup this in my home lab and experienced the same problem.
    ----Setup-----
    2 External VM Switches
Management OS is on VLAN 4093 with IP 192.168.20.1
The guest network adapter is in Trunk Mode, VLAN Tag (4093) is set in the guest OS with IP 192.168.20.100
Everything works until you kick off a reboot from the guest or hyper-v console, after the reboot you loose the connectivity on the network adapter with the vlan trunk.
If you shutdown the guest and start it everthing works again - this happens only on reboot!!
I have tried diffrent things (static mac, enable disable hardware features (vmq/offloading etc) on the vm network adapter but always the same error.
After some search on the net i have found this article: Link
This guy has the same problem with another linux vm (based on debian) his workaround was to trigger a powershell script with the eventlog after reboot of the vm, this works for me too but this must be bug?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Hi Andre,
I would suggest you to install the supported Linux guest OS on hyper-v , please refer to following link:

  • Oracle VM 3.1.1 using Kickstart to install Linux Guests

Up till this point in my experience with Oracle VM.... I've always used templates to create VM guests. However, I have a need to greatly customize a OEL installation and I have traditionally done this via "kickstart scripts". From what I understand, "kickstart" is not supported for installing Linux guests via PXE. If it is... I certainly can't get it to work. I have read a few things here and there about the situation but I must admit I am a little confused.
Does anyone have any insight on how to install a Linux guest via a "kickstart" script called via PXE? If you can't use PXE, then how do you do it?
    Thanks
    Edited by: user12273962 on Jul 17, 2012 2:09 PM

    Salut,
kickstart installations work for us. You don't say whether you're using HVM or PVM guests so I'll assume the latter.
Note that this works for tftp and http based installation - I've not tried nfs and I seem to recall that it doesn't work for PVM systems. At present we are using exactly the same infrastructure to install VMs as for our physical systems (tftp) to keep things simple but the original tests were with http exported images.
In the manager set the network boot path to be something like
    kernel=vmlinuz ramdisk=initrd --args="ksdevice=eth0 network bootproto=dhcp ks=http://myksserver/ks.cgi" tftp://mypxeserver/boot/RHES_5_U7_X86_64_XEN
The kernel and ramdisk locations are relative to the URL given at the end so if you've exported the ISO then they will be a little different.
One way to check that the first stage works is to connect to a hypervisor and run
    /usr/bin/xenpvboot <entire boot path as given above>
If this returns something bootable then you will see
    linux (kernel /var/run/xend/boot/xenpvboot.vmlinuz.KYBNus)(ramdisk /var/run/xend/boot/xenpvboot.initrd.img.hKHQLg)(args 'ksdevice=00:16:3E:XX:XX:XX network bootproto=dhcp ks=http://myksserver/ks.cgi')

  • Linux guest does not get DHCP offer through a bridged internal switch, but Windows guests do (laptop).

I also got trouble getting networking to work on my laptop. It has one Gigabit LAN and one wireless network interface.
I cannot get my Linux guests, I tried CentOS 6.4, Ubuntu 13.10 and Debian 6, to get a DHCP offer from my DHCP server on my physical LAN. Manual configuration using static IP addresses works, but I need DHCP for my laptop.
I tried a Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit guest and the Windows Phone SDK 8.0 and both connected fine to the internet.
    Here is what I tried:
With the ethernet cable disconnected I was connected to my wireless network or LAN with WPA2 personal authentication. On this physical LAN there was a DHCP server.
I created an internal Hyper-V switch and then I created a bridge between this switch and my wireless interface. I always used this switch as the single network connection for my VMs.
    I am using Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit.
Why are only Linux guests affected and is there a solution? Thank you.

    Hi faustbusserl,
"I cannot get my Linux guests, I tried CentOS 6.4, Ubuntu 13.10 and Debian 6, to get a DHCP offer from my DHCP server on my physical LAN. Manual configuration using static IP addresses works, but I need DHCP for my laptop."
Does it mean that you have created an external virtual switch  for Linux guests and they can not get IP from DHCP ?
Did you try to use legacy network card for the linux VM to get IP from DHCP .

  • X200: 64-bit Linux guest on 32-bit Windows XP host issues

I'm encountering an issue when trying to run a 64-bit Debian distribution (using VMWare ACE) on a 32-bit Windows XP SP3 Pro installation.  In short, upon launching the VM I receive an error message stating "Your CPU does not support long mode.  Use a 32bit distribution".  I have verified that the Intel VT settings are enabled in the BIOS (ver. 2.02), and have updated to the most recent chipset driver version; no luck.
I was initially encountering the same issue on a T500, but that was subsequently resolved by a BIOS update (to ver. 1.20).  Has anyone else run into this issue with the X200?  Does anyone know if Lenovo is aware of this problem?  I called Lenovo support but was told they could not help me with this problem.  I asked if I could escalate this to an engineer and was also told "no" to that.

Thanks for your response but no, the issue isn't due to the host OS as this works fine on the T61 and T500 series of laptops.  Actually, I initally had the same issue with the T500, but it was resolved by a BIOS update.  My belief is that there is a problem with the way Lenovo has implemented Intel's VT support in the X200 BIOS (Intel VT is the technology that allows you to run a 64-bit guest in a 32-bit host).

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Guest Virtual Box OSE problem

So I am installing my Arch Linux as a Guest in my Ubuntu partition, through Virtual Box OSE (3.2.8). I followed the wiki ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … lBox_Guest ) but still have an issue:
sudo pacman -S kernel26-headers xorg gcc make
    sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
    sudo /mnt/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
But It fails on Shared folders, and cannot recognize X:
:: Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions Kernel Modules [BUSY]
:: Building the main Guest Additions module [DONE]
:: Building the shared folder support module [FAIL]
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find otu what went wrong)
:: Warning: Unknown version of the X Window System installed. Not installing X Window System drivers.
:: Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components [Done]
    /var/log/vboxadd-install.log states:
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9: error: unknown field 'clear_inode' specified in initalizer
/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.c:406:9 warning: initalization from incompatible pointer type.
Which is strange, because as far as I know, clear_inode is part of the linux headers.
Any idea why this is happening? Do I just need to update VirtualBox to a newer version?

  • Adv RACF 9.0.4.15 LDAP Gateway setup issue on LINUX

    Hi,
I am trying to setup LDAP Gateway on LINUX, while starting the script (run.sh), it is throwing lot of errors. Can anybody please share their working LDAP Gateway run.sh? I will try to compare and resolve the issue.
    Thanks,

I have had to resiolve similar errors using the LDAP gateway for the AS400. The two products are based on the same gateway from Identity Forge.
When you are trying to debug the startup, be sure to watch the console the console for class not found errors. When debugging, I typically run the gateway as a forground task instead of using nohup. In my case, there were some missing jar files that were reventing the gateway from running. I used google to locate the jars and got the gateway to run.
Here is a copy of the run.sh I made using the provided run.sh code as a base.

  • KM Scheduler Task Cache issue

We have created couple of custom schedulers in Enterprise Portal. These schedulers are worked fine in our QA and DEV environment. But when we move the same transport to Production the scheduleru2019s tasks are not showing up in KM scheduler list. But after restarting J2EE couple of times it's showing up in KM scheduler task. This is the behavior we are seeing whenever we move the scheduler to production.
Here are the some technical details about the scheduler,
We have created one Portal Development component and 10 Scheduler Tasks under this component. All the tasks are not created in a single release. Initially when we develop we used to have 2 scheduler tasks under this component, when we move this transport to production we didn't faced any issue. Even after adding 4 to 5 scheduler task we didn't had any issues. After adding more than 6 to 7 whenever we add one we are getting the same issue.
Question: 1 - Is there any limit to for adding Scheduler task in one Portal Component?
This time we have restarted our server more than 5 times but scheduler not showed up. We ask our manger to logon to the portal server who never navigated to KM screen, we ask her to navigate and she did. For her schedulers are showed up. After she navigated to the KM screen everybody is able to see the scheduler. This is not the first time it happens like this, the same situation happen for the previous release also. In previous release we ask our Technical Architect to login to see KM schedulers. After his login everybody is able to see the schedulers.
After doing all these is what I obverse is, it seems KM scheduler has some server level cache for the user and it's giving old screen whenever we are trying to login and see. After the transport, the cache is not getting updated with the new version.
We guess it might be something we need to do with cache.
Is there any idea why the system is behaving like this.

    Hi,
I am facing similar issue. How did you resolve it?

  • OBIEE dashboard login issue in LINUX

    Hi,
I am getting the following error on LINUX IN presentation server log.
    State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred.
[nQSError: 12002] Socket communication error at call=recv: (Number=9) Bad file descriptor (HY000)
On Windows its working fine and when i copy the RPD Linux server and try to login its not logging in.
    Please help.

    Hi User,
It seems to be a Unix server crash.
    I have few questions :
    1) Are you using OBIEE 10g (10.1.3.4)?. It seems to be a bug on 10.1.3.4 to do with the ldap library.
2)Can you login as Administrator and check the report? . What about the login status for normal user?
If your case is as an adminstrator, you can login and see the report while for a normal user you can't able to view then
Do the following steps to fix the issue: (To start up the OBIEE Server)
    abipatst:-$ more StartBIEE.sh
    #!/bin/ksh
    . $HOME/BIEE/10.1.3.4/setup/sa-init.sh
    export LD_PRELOAD=$HOME/BIEE/10.1.3.4/server/Bin/libibmldap.so
    $HOME/BIEE/10.1.3.4/setup/run-sa.sh start
    $HOME/BIEE/10.1.3.4/setup/run-sch.sh start
    Thanks,

  • Delivery block issue

    HI ,SD GURUS
Issue is , once created a sale order and delivery ,so between created sale order and delivery , price may be revised by the customer. Delivery control deapartment  they dont have awareness about price revision..i maintained the condition record fro the materials.
my requirement is i need block the delivery due to price changes from the condition record.
    pls help me
    with regards
    dinesh

    Hi,
One point came to my mind is, the prices in sales order are agreed upon prices with the customer. Now even if you change the prices later, the prices agreed upaon still holds good.. right..
Before changing anything always take into consideration the business perspective also.
So in this case my suggestion would be to have delivery blocks in sales order. Before the users create delivery, check the prices and then release the block.
    Or
If you are gonna use the latest prices then do as Madhu suggested.
    Let us know.
