TC backup schedule and retrieval

Is there a setting somewhere that allows you to change when the TC and Time Machine perform a backup? It's backing up my MBP and MM every hour, which is not neccessary in my household. Once a day would be better for me. One reason for this request is that surfing, etc. is slowed down when a backup is being performed.
Also, is it possible to retrieve a certain file from a previous backup? Say I just want to reload a movie that I've deleted from the MM hard drive, but that is still on the TC in Time Machine. Or do I have to load the complete backup from said day?

yes. take a look @ _*Time Machine Editor*_.
if you have Cocktail, this app also can change backup intervals.
Once a day would be better for me.
that kinda beats the purpose of TM. i would recommend (and do) a backup, like, every 4 hours.
Also, is it possible to retrieve a certain file from a previous backup?
yes. see http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/15.html.

  • [Forum FAQ] Cannot perform a backup schedule via Windows Server Backup and receive "The system cannot find the path specified." Error

    Symptom One
    You attempt to
schedule a backup every day via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2. At the beginning, the backup works without issue. But after a few days it failed and you receive the error “Windows Server Backup:
The system cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue may occur if there is
no shadow copy storage space available on the backup volume.
    Verify
You can use the List ShadowStorage command to check if you have enough storage space to store the newly created shadow copy. If you've reviewed the size of the backup snapshot and discovered
that there is no allocated space for the storage association, you need to resize shadowstorage.
    Solution
You could run the command below to create shadow copy storage space on the backup volume:
    vssadmin resize
    shadowstorage /for=<ForVolumeSpec> /on=<OnVolumeSpec> [/maxsize=<MaxSizeSpec>]
    More Information
    Vssadmin resize shadowstorage

    Symptom Two
    When you add
another external hard drive to backup schedule via Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2012, it fails and you receive the error “The System cannot find the path specified.”
    Cause
The issue is due to the
Original Destination Disk was not attached to the server.
    Verify
You could check the disk status in Disk Management to see if the Original Destination Disk is offline or removed.
    Solution
    You need to attach
Original Destination Disk to the Server then choose another external hard drive as backup target. After that, you could remove the Original Destination Disk.
    Workaround
To work around this issue, please use the WBADMIN command line tool to add disk.
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget :{ DiskID}
The AddTarget parameter takes disk ID as parameter. It can be retrieved by running "WBADMIN GET DISKS" command.
    Example:
    WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP
    -addtarget :{ aa123d14-bba0-1dd9-0d93-80aaaa6bbb63}
    More Information
    Wbadmin enable backup

  • Can I use DB13C for central backup scheduling of MaxDB and Oracle databases

    Hello,
we have installed Solution Manager 7.0 on Windows with MaxDB. We want to use DB13C to schedule and Monitor our database backups. We have 8 systems with Oracle Database and 7 systems with MaxDB database, 1 DB2 and 1 MS-SQL Server . Due to QAS issues we can´t migrate to one database system. Is there a possibility to handle all database systems from our Solution Manager ?
    Thank you
    Heiko

You can use DBACOCKPIT for that purpose. Import the systems from the SLD.

    Hi Shero89,
Thanks for the answer.  I am not new to IOS software but I don't really ever bother with it, have discovered how little I take advantage of the i-phones capability, in reality I still only really use it to phone, text, check emails, listen to music and look on internet.  I'm not keen on jailbreaking it as I don't trust it to work so normally just update and leave it at that.  Only reason I wanted to downgrade was because the update had stopped my bluetooth working but Kilted Tim solved that problem for me so am now not interested in downgrading software.  I quite liked the things that IOS 5.1 gave me but wasn't happy with fact that bluetooth stopped working in car as it caused me problems.  One day I might try and work out exactly what I-phones can do but on the basis that it's a phone all I really want it to do is phone, if that bit works I'm happy.

  • My iPhone 4S deleted all my text messages  and it said u can retrieve them back if u do backup resort and I did and it completely wiped out all my messages and I just want my text messages and photos back

Someone please help me get back my text messages from my boyfriend that have a lot meaning and my heart is shattered cuz I lost all those text messages.. Please help me get back my messages from him!!

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Backup program and lost data

Verizonwireless sent me a link to Blackberry program to backup my data from Tour 9630.  I failed to realize that it is only for contacts.  I connected it to my MacBook Pro.  In the process all my "Notes" and "tasks" got deleted and new OS2 got installed in my BB.  I tried "Restore" button.   I only retrieved "Contacts" and "Schedule".   Does anyone know how to recover the "Notes" and "tasks?"   I had a bad habit of storing all kinds of data under Notes.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Given that some new OS got installed to your BB, all of the data on the BB itself is indeed gone. This leaves only backups as a source from which to restore. But, if the data you need is not available for restore, then, well, it's not available. I can't telly you why...I actually have very limited familiarity with the MAC interface to BBs...we have a whole section of these forums dedicated to MAC use with BBs. You might find something useful there.

  • Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

    Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
    Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe
start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
    schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Once again, the issue is not to run the backup manually from the command line but to have it run via the scheduled task setup by the Windows Backup software.
By default, the schedule task is to be run as NT Authority\System, and when run under this account, the backup does not start (even though account is member of Backup Operators) and job can manually be run via elevated command prompt. This is not a normal
behavior and constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012.
From my understanding the NT Authority\System account is a built-in account from Windows that should by default be part of the Administrators group (built-in) even though it does not explicitly appears like it in AD by default.
This account shall have by default Administrators rights and Backup Operators rights (via the Administrators group) without being explicitly added to those groups (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/ms684190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). By design
it is supposed to be the most powerful account which has unrestricted access to all local system resources. If that is not the case (as it seems) then this would constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012 edition.
As said previously and as you confirmed, currently by default NT Authority\System on Windows 2012 server cannot start backup manually via an elevated command prompt unless it is manually added to Backup Operators (or Administrators) group. But wouldn't that
constitute a bug of Windows Server 2012?
Our server has not yet been restarted since I added NT Authority\System account to the Administrators group explicitly manually so I cannot yet confirmed it would sort the issue. Indeed it is heavily in use so cannot easily be restarted. Will confirm when
    done.
We also have an additional problem where after a while of last reboot, part of the Exchange ECP can no longer be properly loaded in the web browser due to compilation error (compilation is done via NT Authority\System account which seems to no longer have
sufficient right to compile .NET code). What is strange is that it works at first and then stop working at some point... I am hopeful that adding NT Authority\System to the Administrators group would sort this issue as well but once again, that shall not be
    needed!!!
Could a Windows Server 2012 update introduced some security policy changes or else that prevent NT Authority\System to have full power?

  • Windows Server 2008 backup schedule wizard not showing volumes

    Hi folks,
We are running into issues when attempting to configure a Windows Backup schedule through either running the Backup Schedule wizard or through using the wbadmin utility. While I have previously posted this issue on a separate forum (with no luck) I’ve restructured
this description based on the responses received and am also hoping that this a more suitable forum for the problem we are experiencing.
On running the backup wizard the backup configuration screen shows the backup size to be 0KB for the Full Server option or if I choose ‘Custom’ and go to ‘select backup items’ the volume list is empty. However the later ‘select destination disk’ screen of
the wizard lists all of the disks attached to the server along with the associated volume letters (via clicking the ‘Show All Available Disks’ option).
On the backup wizard reaching the summary stage it then proceeds to format the destination disk. On completion of this format the wizard status then changes to ‘Creating backup schedule’ at which point it then fails with the message “The specified number
    of volumes is invalid”.
Equally running the following wbadmin command:
    wbadmin ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget:{81737a1c-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} -schedule:21:00 -include:c:
    Results in the following error:
“ERROR - One of the source volumes specified cannot be included: c: Please specify source as a volume drive letter or access path (if volume is mounted in a folder). Only volumes on locally attached disks can be backed up.”
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R620 running Windows server 2008SP2 and is operating as expected other than for this windows back issue. Everything appears as normal when I view the disks within the Disk Management Console. Backups used to run on this server
fine before it was migrated from old hardware to new hardware using Doubletake Move. Everything else is running fine since the migration apart from Windows backup so not why it would only be effecting Windows backup. I have also ran the wbadmin ‘delete
catalog’ command to remove reference to the previous backups that were taken.
Is there any other tests that I can run to determine why Windows backup is having trouble seeing the available volumes at the 'Select Backup items' stage but not at the Select Destination' stage? Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very
    much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Niall

    Hi Mandy,
Thanks for your advise and apologies for my delayed response. I've was on leave for the past two weeks and my colleague (who had been watching this post in my absence)
was nervous about deleting registry entries (:>)..
I have searched for upper and lower filter values defined under the specified 'Class' registry folder and have found there to be no values specified for either:
    "Storage volume shadow copies" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{533C5B84-EC70-11D2-9505-00C04F79DEAF}
    OR "Storage Volumes" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
Happy to share the other values stored under these two keys if they would be of use in helping spot the problem?
The only upperFilters value that I found within the Class registry folder that related to storage was:
"Disk drives" at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} which had a REG_MULTI_SZ upperFilters value of 'PartMgr'.
Do you know if this Disk drives upperFilters value is as expected and if should/can I delete it?
Also is there any other tests that I can run to determine why Windows backup is having trouble seeing the available volumes at the 'Select Backup items' stage but not at the Select Destination' stage?
    Thanks,
    Niall

  • My partner deleted my itunes (10) library. I use a WD external back-up and retrieved my itunes library, but when i try to play a song i get the message 'could not be used because the original file could not be found Would you like to locate it?'

My partner deleted, by accident my itunes library. I have an iMac 10.6.7, Itunes 10. I use an WD passport as an external back up and retrieved my itunes library but now get the message "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" so itunes is not recognised the exclamation marked songs, how do i get the retrieved files recognised. At times I get fed-up with Apple blocking files being used, although I like the product its restrictions are so silly!

You not only have to retrieve the library file from the backup drive but the actual music files (usually stored within the "iTunes Media" folder) as well.

  • Sizing Backup, Bootable and Storage partitions on an External Disk

I have iMac G5, 2 GB RAM, 1 TB HD with one partition currently holding about 140 GB, and a TB external disk. I want to use the external disk for three purposes: Bootable Partition, Time Machine Backup, Miscellaneous Storage.
Apple advises matching the capacity of the Time Machine backup to that of the volume being backed up. My inclination is to limit the Backup volume to 500 GB, see how that works out and re-evaluate as HD use increases.
Q1. As I understand, the bootable partition would be, at the minimum, a duplicate of all OS X (Leopard in the case of G5s) system and application software.
Q2. Should it also include 3rd party apps? (yes?)
Q3. Should it be a pristine installation that is independently kept up to date with all upgrades, but essentially unused unless an emergency arises? (yes?) Or is it okay to somehow sync it with my HD content? (this could copy a problem to just where you don't want it to be?)
Since I will be using Time Machine to backup my HD, it does not seem that all the data files (e.g. iTunes Library) need to be included in the bootable partition.
Q4. What are the correct choices for what goes into the bootable partition, including 3rd party apps and data?
Q5. What process should be used for updating this software? Independent, parallel updates? (yes?)
Q6. Are there any files that should be duplicated in this partition; for example, keychains are something you need - or would you get these from Time Machine too?
Q7. Since the Time Machine backup resides on the same disk, it is possible to restore needed files from there. When Time Machine restores the system, does it put everything into the boot partition? (yes?)
Q8. If so, since Disk Utility allows dynamic re-partitioning, I could use a limited space for the bootable partition and then re-allocate more space to it later if I wanted to run a fully restored version of the system off the external disk? (yes?)
Q9. Does it make sense to separate the Miscellaneous Storage into a separate partition? (yes?) Or should should I use just one partition to hold the bootable stuff and the miscellaneous stuff? (no?)

    Mr. Cat wrote:
Mostly agreeing with Kappy here, but a few additions.

That should be plenty, depending on how the 140 GB will grow. Our "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Q1. As I understand, the bootable partition would be, at the minimum, a duplicate of all OS X (Leopard in the case of G5s) system and application software.
That depends on what you're trying to do, and how much space you have, but usually a bootable clone contains everything. Thus it's partition should be a minimum of 120% of the data on (or anticipated to be on) your internal HD.
Think for a moment about why you want two separate, independent backups. The safest route is to have them on separate disks, so you're protected against either disk failing (and they all do, sooner or later). For that reason, consider getting another disk for the clone. If you get a portable one, you can take it to a secure off-site location, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, and direct lightning strike on your power lines. Some folks get a pair of them; use one for a week or so, then take it off-site and swap with the other one.
The other reason to have two backups is to protect you against a problem with one app or drive; thus if your TM backups somehow get corrupted, you still have the clone, and vice-versa.
In both cases, your best bet is to let both apps back up nearly everything. Sometimes there's a good reason to omit some things; see #11 in the FAQ Tip for more detail. Also, if you're running Windoze via virtualization software, you likely do not want to back it up with Time Machine. See #9 in the FAQ Tip.
Q5. What process should be used for updating this software? Independent, parallel updates? (yes?)
I use CarbonCopyCloner, in addition to full Time Machine backups; SuperDuper is similar. Both are reliable. CCC is donationware, SD has a free version, but you'll need the paid one (about $30) to do automatic scheduling and updates (vs. a full replacement). Both are easily found via Google.
Q7. Since the Time Machine backup resides on the same disk, it is possible to restore needed files from there. When Time Machine restores the system, does it put everything into the boot partition? (yes?)
    You select the destination disk/partition.
Q8. If so, since Disk Utility allows dynamic re-partitioning, I could use a limited space for the bootable partition and then re-allocate more space to it later if I wanted to run a fully restored version of the system off the external disk? (yes?)
Yes, but be careful. You can only resize a partition by dragging the bottom in the diagram up or down; you can't move the top. Thus to expand a partition, you have to delete the one below it.
Q9. Does it make sense to separate the Miscellaneous Storage into a separate partition? (yes?) Or should should I use just one partition to hold the bootable stuff and the miscellaneous stuff? (no?)
They should each be separate. See #3 in the FAQ about the TM partition; and you'll also want the clone to be on it's own partition.
Since you have a lot of room on the external, I'd recommend putting the TM partition first, and the most-easily replaced partition(s) last.
You might want to use the Restore option of Disk Utility to make a copy of your Install disc in a small partition on the external (towards the end). It's much faster and easier to boot from that instead of trying to find your Install disc, when you need to. I'd also recommend making a duplicate of that disk and keeping it in a secure off-site location.

My iMac (late 2010 model) desktop's hard drive is fried (was about 200GB). How much am I expecting to pay for a new one and retrieve my information?

As you can see Erin, trying to recover information from a hosed drive can be very expensive.
I would suggest first the OWC site as well. You can get a new drive of choice in size there.
I would also get the voyager  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VOYQHDB1.0T/
    and..
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Prosoft%20Engineering/DGDR3BUN/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/
Wth your lap top and these folllowing tools your are set to change out the drive, reload OS and then with
the voyager pop in the old iMac drive and with the Prosoft software, try to mount and recover the files. Data Rescue is very good at this " if " the drive is not totally mechanically hosed. Drive Genius is very good at a number of things too. Nothing replaces the old adage of Back Up Back up Back up.
The voyage I listed can become the new backup drive for you.. your choice of tools: Time Machine or by cloning via CarbonCopyCloner or by what I use SuperDuper! IF you want to be really kewl.. both. By that I mean cloning and Time Machine.
It will take you an hour to swap out the drive and spring clean the iMac.. there is a hundred how too,s on you tube.
Hope this helps. Remember if is always when a drive will fail..they all do. I tell the people I support that Harddrives are good for 15 min.. to when they don't work. They will all fail.
Apple Geniuses are very limited to what they can and will do as far as file recovery.
Your best bet is to try to do it your self first. There is lots of help out here and you are not the first.

  • ISE version 1.2 patch-5 backup schedules

    Hi,
I have ISE version 1.2 patch 5 and I have scheduled a backup every day @3am EST.
Now I would like to delete that backup schedule.  I know how to disable the backup but I would like to delete it completely.  In other words, I do not want to see it everytime I log into the WebUI Administration --> backup & restore.
    Is it possible?

At this time, you can only disable the scheduled backups, you cannot delete them.  I know that enhancements to the sceduled backup are scheduled for 1.2.1 and hope that this is one of them.

    Hi
Are u taking the offline backup on disk or tape. Your log seems to be mentioning it to be on tape. Anyways, have you set the /oracle/SID/102_64/dbs/initSID.sap file parameters accordingly. Also the log says that there has been a user intervention to stop the backup. Did you press Cntrl C in the process. Offline backups to tape is a bit tricky aand even we are fighting on this. I would suggest taking it on disk and then transferring it to tape.

  • SBO Backup schedule problem

    Hi,
When i try to schedule de SBO Backup in the SAP Service Manager to "daily" and click oke, then it always switches back to "on specific date"
    What is my problem?
    Greetings
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for the details, we were checking all the fixes included in version 2007A in regard the backup services and not similiar issue had been reported.
The change in the backup frequency could be related to a third party application as Anti-virus a/o spyware reseting the system values to the previous one.
As already commented in this thread, it will be advisable to reinstall the server tools or make the proper changes to allow you antivirus to take the change.
If still facing the issue after applying previous recommendations, please generate and forward a message to Business One support including all the details from your test and observations.
    Regards,
