Team Foundation Service Reporting (is it possible to point it to a BI Tool or excel?)

Hi, I've read about TF Service and see that it has very limited reporting capabilities, but I have not been capable anything regarding pointing it to excel or a BI tool.
My question is:
would I have the ability to point it to a Bi tool or even Excel to the data cube to allow to run reporting?
If you can please tell me or refer me to a web page where I can see that,  it would be great.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Jose

hi Jose
you're probably using the wrong forum as you're looking for TFS Service aka VisualStudio Online and not the on-premise TFS Server.
for on-premise TFS server you can use this link
Excel Reports
currently VisualStudio Online does not have a cube and therefore the reporting is very limited and restricted to work item charting
Visualize progress (work item charting)

  • Team foundation service doesn't format datetimes locally

    In using Team Foundation Service AKA VisualStudio Online AKA VisualStudio.com, ALL date and date time formats throughout the various portals eg: Backlogs, Queries, Iterations, Task History etc, consistently show in US date time format.
    Considering I'm an Aussie, it would be nice for me and fellow citizens if the site displays Aussie date time format by default eg: dd/MM/yyyy.   We are an Australian company, so this would be a company wide setting.

    You can change the default culture for your profile on the edit my profile page (click your name in the upper right corner)
    And the account (VSO account) wide setting on the admin/settings page which should be here:

  • Microsoft Certification on Load Testing using Visual Studio Team Foundation Services

    Hi Folks,
    I need your help in finding the Microsoft Certification for load test using TFS Online.
    I've gone through the MSDN blogs for this topic. The closest one that I found was https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a25f86d4-9089-42d8-a9a1-32d22fe8f82b/microsoft-certification-exam-for-load-testing?forum=vstswebtest
    With reference to above, can you please let me know if there is any kind of certification that is now added for load testing.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Also If there is no update with the above certifications then can we suggest to the Microsoft certification team about the same? I think many of the software testers would be awaiting to get an Microsoft Certification in this field.
    Thanks,
    Devendra

    There is no certification that specifically focuses on Load Testing. The closest is perhaps exam 70-497, "Software Testing with Visual Studio", but this deals mostly with functional testing, and only has minimal coverage of load testing.

  • Is RoboHelp 7 (and older) compatible with Team Foundation Services (TFS)?

    We want to migrate our older RoboHelp projects to TFS. Is RoboHelp compatible with TFS?

    RoboHelp is compatible with TFS. See http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/robohelp-tfs-integration.html for an instruction on how to set it up.
    Having set that, I have only ever used RH8 with TFS. I don't know whether older versions of RoboHelp work with TFS, but I have used RH7 with VSS.
    If you give it a try, please post back to let us know whether your old RH versions work with TFS too.

  • TF400893: Team Foundation Server services are not available.

    Hi Gang
    Am getting
    TF400893: Team Foundation Server services are not available. This is most likely caused by a network error. Please check your connection and try again.
    consistently when trying to access TFS2012 Web Access.  I'm on the same domain as the server and able to login however as soon as I try and access a query it asks me to log in again and then presents me with the above message.
    Any thoughts am trying to get as many ports open as possible however security's pretty tight here.

  • Team Foundation Server 2013 update 4 New Install - Error 503 Service Unavailable for Sharepoint Central Admin

    Hello,
    I ran a new install of Team Foundation Server and let it install the built in SharePoint pieces on a single server setup. After the install i'm able to access the
    http://teamfoundation:8080/tfs/ address without issue but am unable to create a project. When I attempt to create a project I get the following error:
    TF30172: You do not have permission to create a new team project (when checking security i'm a member of the project collection administrators and Team Foundation Administrators)
    This led me to look at the sharepoint central administration site where I receive the following error:
    Error 503 Service Unavailable
    I've gone through and validated the identity is set correctly in IIS for the following services:
    SharePoint Central Admin v4
    SharePoint15AppPool
    The SharePoint Web Services Root is set as LocalService instead of the domain user.
    The identity domain user is setup as local administrator on the Team Foundation Server. They are all set to use .net v4.0.30319 with integrated Pipeline mode.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for your post.
    Please share your detailed team project creation log here.
    In your TFS Admin Console>>Extensions for SharePoint Products tab, ensure SharePoint Web Application shows correctly in the right panel. And go to TFS Admin Console>>Application Tier>>SharePoint Web Applications tab, ensure your SharePoint
    web application displays in the right panel, then select your SharePoint web application and click Repair Connection, ensure can repair successfully.
    In your IIS Manager, select your SharePoint Central Administration V4 site and click Browser:17012(http) in the right panel, check if your SharePoint Central site can be opened successfully or not. If your SharePoint Central site cannot be accessed, I think
    this issue relate to your SharePoint site, you should contact SharePoint experts to resolve this issue first. After you resolved this issue and your SharePoint Central Admin site can be accessed correctly, then try to create your team project(within SharePoint
    site) again, if there still has issue when creating team project, please share the detailed error message here, we will try to resolve it.

  • (BUG??) Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 4 Support for SQL 2014

    Scenario: On Windows 2012 R2 x64 I have installed SQL, Reporting Services & AS 2014 (applied all updates through Windows Update), SharePoint 2013 Foundation, and installed Team Foundation Server 2013 RTM (did not configure).
    Before configuring TFS, I applied Update 4 to the server (not update 1,2 or 3 directly). When trying to configure I get the following error:
    ==========================
    TF255146: Team Foundation Server requires SQL Server 2012 SP1 (11.00.3000) or greater. The SQL Server instance you supplied is version 12.0.2254.0.
    TF400403: The Report Server instance specified is version 12.0.2254.0, the minimum supported version is 11.0.3000.
    TF400070: A required version of a component is not installed on the application tier. You must exit the Team Foundation Administration Console and install a supported version of either SQL Server Analysis Services of the SQL Server Client Tools on the application
    tier to ensure that the Analysis Services object model is present for warehouse processing.
    ====================================
    My understanding is that as of Update 2 (or was it 3) that SQL 2014 was supported. However it appears if that particular update is not installed directly it bypasses the check. Can someone verify I am seeing the intended result or is this a bug?

  • Team Foundation Server 2013 trace doesn't work

    I'm trying to turn on tracing on my TFS 2013 instance. To do this I'm modifying C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation
    Server 12.0\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config file like this:
    <appSettings>
    <add key="traceWriter" value="true" />
    <add key="traceDirectoryName" value="%TEMP%\\TFLogFiles" />
    </appSettings>
    <system.diagnostics>
    <assert assertuienabled="false" />
    <trace autoflush="false" indentsize="4" />
    <switches>
    <add name="API" value="4" />
    <add name="Authentication" value="4" />
    <add name="Authorization" value="4" />
    <add name="Database" value="4" />
    <add name="General" value="4" />
    <!-- WorkItem trace switches -->
    <add name="traceLevel" value="4" />
    </switches>
    </system.diagnostics>
    After these manipulations log files appear but they are not verbose at all. I tried the same step with 2 different TFS
    2013 deployments and got no results. I also tried this technique with TFS 2010 and it works.
    Has anybody tried this feature with TFS 2013 or has precise  instructions how to turn off detailed tracing on TFS 2013 (I found the only good article for
    outdated TFS 2010: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bryang/archive/2011/11/14/tracing-in-team-foundation-server-2010.aspx)

    Hi Shkleinik & Kevin,
    TFS 2013 includes low-level tracing for diagnosing complex server problems. You can refer to the page below for tracing configuration for TFS 2013, chekc if it works.
    http://larzjoakimnilzzon.blogspot.in/2012/04/tracelogging-configuration-in-team.html
    If it doesn't work and you want to report to MS, then you can submit it to Microsoft Connect Feedback portal at:

  • How to populate data for SharePoint Team Foundation Server web part burndown, bug progress chart

    Hi,
    We are configuring the Team Foundation Server web part to show dashboards associated with burndown, user stories, etc. I added some active but when I click on the Bug Progress link, the chart does not display any data. I click on the Burndown link to
    add some issues data. When I click on the Task burndown or the  user story progress, I get the following message
    "The error occured during an attempt to establish a connection to the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh:
    TfsOlaReport"
    I would like the see the data correctly populated in the chart. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Comicrage86,
    Thanks for your post.
    What’s the version of your TFS and SharePoint?
    Do you mean the burndown report and bug progress chart in team project site? If yes, your current team project created using which process template?
    As far as I know team project Release Burndown report shows in team project site by default. How did you add the active to show Bug Progress chart and did you custom your Burndown in team project site? Please share the detailed steps here. And you can share
    your screenshots here, it will help us provide the better response.
    If reports cannot show correctly in your team project site, please check the default reports in your team project>>Reports, ensure that default team project reports working fine in your Reporting Service site first. Then follow the
    steps in this
    article to troubleshooting the SharePoint Dashboards data source issue.
    Or refer to the solution in this post:

  • Setup Team Foundation Server - Team Site Collection - SharePoint Web Application Settings failed with error TF205014, TF250025

    Hi
    I have TFS server installed and working with other SharePoint farm.  (TFS installed,  SharePoint extension installed and Granted Access for TFS.
    When Setup TFS - SharePoint Web Application Settings,  It ask for the three values:
    Web Application URL:
    Central Administration URL:
    Default Location of team project collection sites:
    What notice about the TFS sites that are working is that they are Path Based Site Collection.  Created with SharePoint Web Application managed path (like
    http://spserver/sites/tfs_site1) and so it easy to see it will work.
    Web Application URL:  http://spserver
    CA URL :   http://spserver:portnumber
    Default Location :  Sites or any managed path
    We start using Host Name Site Collection (HNSC) to get the benefit of multiple unique site name without having multiple web application for each.  Work great but when we tried to setup and extend TFS service on the HNSC, we could
    not get them to work and got errors when trying different variation of path URL.
    After doing lot of searching on this, I came up pretty empty and I don't know if that is possible so my question is Have anyone able to setup TFS to work with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection?
    If you have, a simple yes will be great but please share or even if anyone think it is possible or not possible, please share too.
    Thanks in advance for any comment / suggestion.
    Swanl

    Hi  Swanl,
    I’m afraid that we cannot setup TFS to work  with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection.
    Also you can  initial a new thread in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server forums:
    Team Foundation Server – General: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=tfsgeneral
    More experts for Team Foundation Server will assist you, then you will get more information relation to your issue.

  • Monitoring Team Foundation Server

    Hello,
    We have a two server deployment for Team Foundation Server 2013 with Database Tier on one server and Application tier on another.
    To effectively manage and maintain both the servers/applications/Database, my organization is looking at options.
    I suggested use of SCOM to monitor resources, services, etc. We are looking at options like activebatch - an application that is a Job Scheduler. activebatch is a consideration because we already have a license of the product.
    Using activebatch, we are supposed to schedule jobs (written in PowerShell, SQL Server and whatever may be required) that will monitor certain parameters/resources of the Servers/Application/Database. Please suggest what parameters can be considered for
    monitoring. What all is required to be monitor.
    I understand that SCOM Provides, out-of-box management packs to do such activity, I just need an answer as to why SCOM is better than scheduling hand-crafted jobs for monitoring.
    I am in favour of SCOM but organization requires explanations to why not activebatch.
    Thanks in advance!!
    Best Regards,
    Yogesh

    Hi Yogesh,
    Based on your description, seems it's not a real TFS question. For the options to monitor TFS servers, it depends on your own decision.
    You can let your organization know more information about the features and benefits of SCOM. Please refer to the links below for more info:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Center_Operations_Manager
    http://www.systemcentercentral.com/the-top-5-benefits-of-combining-operations-manager-and-sharepoint-scom-sysctr-sharepoint/
    And you can also consider to integrate SCOM with activebatch, check this

  • Connecting Visual Studio 2008 to Team Foundation Server 2012/2013

    I currently have many projects in VS 2008.
    We are able to build and deliver all of the products to the production servers.
    I want to connect VS2008 to VisualStudio.com so I can create an environment for Beta Testing with VisualStudio.com and Azure.
    I have started from scratch:
    Build a VMWare Virtual Machine - Windows 7 Ultimate
    Added all of the Windows Updates
    I installed Visual Studio 2008 - Professional
    I updated Visual Studio 2008 to SP1
    I have installed VS2008 Team Explorer
    Unable to install GDR2 - with message "Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your system. '
    I attempted to follow the "more information" instructions but there were no previous version to uninstall.
    I attempted to login to Team Foundation Server (https://nnnnnn.visualstudio.com/DefaultCollection) and receive the "TF31002: Unable to connect to ....
    I am able to login to the visualstudio.com site without any issue.
    I have been working on this for days and no matter what I have read and tried, I cannot seem to get past this point.
    I tried using a laptop I have and did the same steps as above with the same results.
    It is obvious I am missing a step or that this process is longer possible.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Is there a "support" number that might help me resolve this?

    Hi Zanyfrong,
    Thanks for your post.
    To using VS 2008 connect to TFS 2012/2013 or VSO, please install components follow the below order:

  • Team Foundation Server 2013 MP discoveries not working.

    We are standing up a TFS 2013 instance.  We copied over our prod data to new hardware and performed the upgrade.  The system seems to be working, testing is going on now.
    I brought in the Team Foundation Server 2013 Management Pack ver 1.0.0.1 into SCOM and applied the run as account.
    First question, in the documentation it shows to apply this to all objects and add in your application tier server(s) into the more secure area to control where the account goes.  Doing this caused a slew of "System Center Management Health Service
    Credentials Not Found Alert Message" as every other server didn't have rights to run this account.
    Changed that to object and selected the AT server.  This stopped the alerts and some of the discoveries are working.  But when I look in the logs the URLs its trying to hit are missing data, example, MonitorForRegistrationWebService.vbs :
    RE-CONSTRUCTED URL = [http://localhost:/tfs//Services/v1.0/Registration.asmx], noticed the // after TFS.  Its seem to be missing the project collection name.
    I also noticed that the Default Project GUID is coming across as all zeros.
    In the monitoring panel the TFS Application Tier Servers view shows my single AT server and all icons show healthy
    In the TFS Project Collections, it shows the single project collection I have as healthy but TFSBuildAgent and TFSBuildController are not monitored.  These exist on a different server from the AT.
    The TFS Installation view shows a single installation as healthy except for TFS Build Server is not monitored
    As you would expect by now the TFS Build Agent and TFS Build Controllers view are empty.  We don't have a Proxy setup.
    I have not disabled any of the discoveries as I wanted to make sure that one or the other would discover the build servers.  No override MPs are in place.
    Looking at the build controller and build server I don't see any TFS discoveries running in the event viewer.

    Hi,
    Did you use below management pack to monitor TFS?
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35773
    I would like to suggest you check below links:
    http://dotnet.dzone.com/articles/monitoring-tfs-2012-using-scom

    As when change TFS server, then no errors, so I would like to suggest you compare all TFS related settings. And please also check runas account for the management pack.
