Temporary install files?

I just noticed, and I don't know if this has ever been on topic but, I went into (on my Vista laptop) C:/ProgramData and opened the folders Apple and Apple Computers and noticed that there is hundred's of MB of temporary (I think) install files. Why aren't these removed after the installation, these hidden files are easily taking up at least 1GB. That's a lot of wasted space! What's the deal Apple? Can these files be removed? Are they temporary or required?

Templeton Peck wrote:

These are user to user forums. Nobody here would know what the "deal" is.
*"Are they temporary or required?"*
Move them somewhere else temporarily. If you never get an error messages then they're probably temp files and can be deleted.
You should also post Boot Camp related questions in the Boot Camp forums:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237
I understand these are user to user forums. I was just asking for emphasis. I've already moved the files and found, to my knowledge, that they are just for the installation of their products (i.e. iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, etc.). Besides the fact it is on Windows, it has nothing to do with Boot Camp. This is on my 2 year old HP _Vista Laptop!_ I'm wondering why Apple decided to put these files in C:/ProgramData and not the Temporary Files folder so Windows can remove them after the installation is done, instead of keeping the files in a data folder and letting them sit. That takes up a lot of data! It doesn't make sense to me. Either way, asking anybody on this forum isn't gonna help the issue. I just want to make sure Windows users (should be using Mac OS X) are aware of this.

  • How to delete un-needed Lion install files

To recover some extra disk space I am wondering if there are any temporary install files that I can now safely remove.  I did a google search and wasn't able to find anything.  Maybe the Lion install software already cleaned up as part of the process?
    Thanks!

I used Monolingual and deleted unwanted Languages, Architectures & Input methods and free up 1.3 - 1.7GB.
The I deleted unwanted print drivers and got back about 600MB

  • When I try to download and install iTunes I get this message...Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\iTuens64Setup(1).exe is not a valid Win32 application

Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\itunes64Setup(1).exe is not a valid Win32 application

That suggests that the installer is getting damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Temporary wim-files for multicast transmissions still needed for WDS installation in Server 2012 R2?

    Acording to
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn281955.aspx one of the new features for WDS in Server 2012 R2 for multicast is:
Improved multicast deployment by eliminating the need for making a local copy of the install.wim file. You can apply the install.wim file while it is being downloaded without significant impact to the application process.
However, this doesn't seem to be activated by default and I still get the following error when installing one or more machines using multicast:
"Windows Setup cannot locate a valid hard drive to store temporary installation files." However, once I remove Multicast from this install image, it installs without any problems at all.
I have also noticed that while multicasting, the installation will use the "Copying Windows files" phase, while downloading and copying the install.wim (or whatever name it is) locally on the hard drive first, so this will require lots of space.
So the question is, how do you enable this new feature that should be a part of WDS in Server 2012 R2???

    Full version:
Following steps could help enable the feature:
    1.       Mount the boot image using dism.
    e.g.
    >dism /mount-wim /wimfile:c:\remoteinstall\boot\x64\images\boot.wim /index:2 /mountdir:c:\mount
    2.       Create a metadata file if no existing one. The metadata file should be in mountdir from the first step under mountdir\sources. And the file name should be: WdsClientMetadata.txt
    3.       Add entry to the metadata file: WDS.Client.Multicast.WIM.Streaming.Enabled=true
    4.       Save changes and unmount the boot image
    e.g.
    >dism /unmounts-wim /mountdir:c:\mount /commit
Sorry for the late reply, but I had to test this thoroughly since I didn't get it working right away. I tried both the regedit you first mentioned, and later also creating a textfile in the "/index:2 boot.wim", both without any success. I noticed
that creating the sources\WdsClientMetadata.txt with the data "WDS.Client.Multicast.WIM.Streaming.Enabled=true" gives me an error upon booting into WDS as follows (EUFI/IPv6-boot):
Same happens if I boot using IPv4 (an non-UEFI boot), except that there would be a plain IPv4-address instead in the error msg. Just for troubleshooting I tried writing WDS.Client.Multicast.WIM.Streaming.Enabled=false in the file instead, and WDS would throw
me the exact same error message. Once I delete the file sources\WdsClientMetadata.txt from the WDS/Boot image, the client boots ok, both for IPv4/IPv6. Disabling the firewall on the WDS didn't help, so something in the configuration is still missing? I'm getting
to a dead end here, and I suppose you're all out of advice on this one?
Thank you Shaon Shan for your great effort so far.

  • Unable to create temporary backing file

My program is throwing out the error:
temporary open: /var/tmp/BDB20825: Too many open files
unable to create temporary backing file
This happens after my program has been running for about 4 hours. The program appears to run out of file descriptors. The listing of /proc/<PID>/fd shows hundreds of lines naming the same file (/var/tmp/BDB20825), like this:
    lrwx------ 1 zobell users 64 Jul 28 14:41 622 -> /var/tmp/BDB20825 (deleted)
That file does not exist. I suspect that someone is deleting but failing to close the file. A few open file descriptors with this deleted file occur slowly in the early hours, but not at a fast enough rate to bring the program down when it does. It looks like there is a sudden flood at the end.
The program repeats this error slowly, and is stuck inside the db code. Here is the gdb backtrace I am seeing every time I interrupt:

At this time, the program is trying to extract fields out of an XmlDocument that is the result of a query. The program uses a pre-calculated XmlQueryExpression to extract a specific field. This may not be the best way to extract a field from a document, given the apparent overhead of needing a temporary file!
My program queries two database files (OD.dbxml and FD.dbxml.new), and uses the information to add records to the second file. The databases are rather big:
    bash-3.2$ ls -l /tmp/*dbxml*
    -rw-rw---- 1 zobell users 5233745920 Jul 28 14:42 /tmp/FD.dbxml.new
    -rw-rw---- 1 zobell users 6539427840 Jul 13 10:16 /tmp/OD.dbxml
(I keep them in /tmp because everywhere else uses NFS and performance is awful with NFS.)
    My environment:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.3 (Tikanga) 32 bit.
Berkeley DB XML 2.4.16, C++ interface.
Disk space should not be an issue:
    bash-3.2$ df /tmp /var
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-tmp
    28948572 13044384 14409968 48% /tmp
    /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-root
    144742920 5333544 131938272 4% /
I ran this program about a year ago and did not see this issue. I have made a few changes and linked to the newer version of the XML database since then. Any help is appreciated.

I have more information about this problem.
If I "disable" the routine __os_zerofill() in os_fzero.c, by having it always return (0), I no longer get an exception and my application appears to run smoothly. However, I have not determined what in this routine leads to the exception. And, I have no idea what the short and long term consequences of "disabling" this routine will be....

  • When creating PDF I get message "This file was saved to the Temporary Internet  Files Folder"

about 80% of the time when I am creating a PDF Document using the Print to Adobe function I get the following message:
"For your computers security, this file was saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder"
"Do you want to open this folder?"
It doesn't matter if I say yes I want to open the folder or not I can never locate the file.
I am using Vista Ultimate 32. for an operating system.
I have the following programs installed too:
    Office 2007 Enterprise
    Office 2007 Project Professional
    Office Visio Professional 2007
As a antivirus I am using Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008
    Diskeeper 2008 Pro
    Nero 8
    Quicken Home and Business 2008
    WinRar
I am using Microsoft Internet explorer V 7.0.6001.18000
Thank you for your help. I have looked everywhere and I'm lost.

You can get the same results (as turning protected mode off) by:
(presuming you have an icon for Internet Explorer on your desktop or taskbar) -- right click the icon and pick "Run as administrator"
I've got the same problem printing to pdf (Acrobat v8; problem's only in IE7) on a Dell Optiplex/Vista Business desktop machine (though not my T61/Vista Ultimate Thinkpad laptop) and the above resolves the issue for my desktop machine. Certainly not a fix but perhaps a clue to Adobe developers, on the [slim?] chance they read these posts.

  • After downloading PSE 13, receive error message cannot open windows temporary internet files

After downloading Photoshop elements 13, I receive an error message as it tries to open (but instead opens my PSE 9 application) and this message appears:  "cannot open C:Users\Spears\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.1E5\AV8ZNMD1\Photoshop Elements_13_LS25_win64.7z"
I have been trying various fixes to download this for 2 days now.  Can someone please help me?
    Thanks!

Did you check if the Firefox file is in that location?
If it isn't there then do a clean (re)install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
If the file is there then do a malware check with some malware scan programs.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.<br />

  • Temporary Internet Files

I am new to this forum and new to MAC. I have a used PowerBook G4, with MAC OS 10.4.7. My issue is this, the other day I got a notice that I only had a minimal amount of Memory left, even though I have not downloaded anything and I do not create documents that take up a large capacity of space. My roommate who sold me the MAC said something about deleting Temporary Internet Files, I know how to do this on a PC with Explorer, but this computer doesn't have Explorer. I don't know what the deal is. I deleted a large bit of info, mainly all my iTunes to get back up to more than 2GB, well in just two days of only being on the internet and nothing else, I am down to 1.5GB. Where is my memory going and how do I get it back? Can anyone help me. I would really appreciate it. Hey iraravitz,
Could you please let me know what version of OS are working on.
You might receive this error when you attempt to install on a drive with the HFS+ Case Sensitive file system, which is not supported for installation of Adobe Creative Suite 6.
So, please try installing on a drive that has been formatted with a supported file system.
You might refer the KB doc link mentioned below for the same:

==> ERROR: install file (nasm.install) does not exist.
When reviewing the PKGBUILD file there was a line in the header:
    install=nasm.install
ArchWiki (PKGBUILD) explains the install directive
The name of the .install script to be included in the package. pacman has the ability to store and execute a package-specific script when it installs, removes or upgrades a package. The script contains the following functions which run at different times
I removed the install= line and everything appeared to work.  My question is... does anyone know if the install script it was expecting to find did anything special that is going to cause me grief going forward?
    Thx

I figured out what I did wrong.   I copied only the PKGBUILD file out of /var/abs/extra/nasm folder ..  the nasm.install was still in the folder.
Explains why I couldn't find the answer on Google.

  • How can I get Full PDF file in temporary Internet Files folder when a PDF is opened in IE?

when a URL displaying a PDF file(http://www.google.com/Test.pdf) in internet explorer is done, the PDF file is opened in Microsoft internet explorer itself. But I observe one thing. i.e., If the PDF file is created with acrobat distiller the the PDF file opened on IE is fully obtained in Temporary Internet files, and if the PDF file is created with other than acrobat distiller(i.e., created using other PDF tools), then if the same file, then only a part of PDF(10KB-50KB) is obtained in Temporary internet files folder, and remaining is obtained by Acrxxxx.tmp in C:\Documents and Settings\Current UserName\Local Settings\temp folder. why this is happening?
consider the total size of file as 1.5MB.
In my PC, I had Adobe reader 8.1 and IE6.

Yes, I was seeing the difference between PDFs that are linearized. I had unchecked that option, still I can't get the Full PDF in temporary Internet files folder.
Are there any more settings to be changed.
Why only for some files this is happening, What was the difference b/w the files which are fully obtained in temporary internet files folder and that are of not fully obtained.

  • How can we change the default folder location (avoiding problems with Temporary Internet Files)

(Environment in question: Windows 7 secure desktop (running as user not admin), Office 2010)
    Hello,
As has been touched on in various forums (such as here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/797451), when one opens a PDF attachment in Outlook, Acrobat and Reader store the file in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder (f/k/a OLK folder in previous versions of Outlook.  There are two major problems with this:
First, as Microsoft has documented in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817878, attachments end up here staying here under certain conditions (go checks your now, you'll find some!), which ends up being a file attachment no man's land, and that can present security risks (e.g. if data we thought was deleted still lives in that folder).
Secondly, the first time you open an attachment in Acrobat and do a Save As, Acrobat is defaulting to the Temporary Internet Files location.  This folder (as noted in the thread linked above) is ridiculously hard to get to for the average user, so they can end up storing a file and then losing it.
We've found that if we open Acrobat once, do a save as, and change to the users Documents folder, the change sticks.  But how can we have Acrobat default to Documents instead of that temporary location?
      Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you check to see if Acrobat sets a registry entry or file preference for the first Save As?  That's where I would start looking.  Process Monitor is a good tool for this.

  • How Do I Execute An exe or an msi Install file From a Button in Flash Movie

    Issue:
I have a flash movie that runs as a standalone player on a
Demo CD... I also have an install msi file(same as an exe) that
when the user is done viewing the flash movie they can click on a
menu button in the flash movie that executes the msi or exe located
on the root of the CD which starts the install process.
Question: What is the action script (FOR FLASH 8) that i
apply to the button that will initiate or call the MSI or exe
    install file.
Anyhelp would be great... even a link to an example... or
    anything... thanks
    Thanks in advance...

    fscommand("exec","myexe.exe");
Should run the program myexe.exe inside a directory called
    fscommand
which must be a subdirectory of whereever your projector is
    located.
In windows:I know you can run .bat files with fscommand. But
I'm not sure about msi files.
You can often get around the limitations by having a .bat
file that will a) show a cmd window briefly and b) do the thing
that you couldn't do from flash.
If running the msi doesn't work from flash directly you may
want to try using a bat file...
    There's some information here.

This is like the 20th time this ipod not being read by pc problem has occurred and it's really making me never trust apple with pcs again.

    2. "I ran the system rescue cd and fsck'ed both partitions" -> Did you get any direct filesystem error message from the system?
    3. What happens if you try to delete the corrupted files and restart ? Does it become corrupted too every time?
4."X sometimes won't start, I get a black screen and I need to power down by holding the power button." -> Which driver/kernel/xorg version do you use ? I've experienced such a situation with the nvidia-185.18.31 driver.
Thank you for your quick response.
    1. Is it safe to delete the corrupted files in /var/log? I already deleted viminfo after it got corrupted the first time, but it happened again.
    2. In the rescue cd, fsck quickly said "it's ok" without checking. Is there a way to force it to check? The man page doesn't say. The longer check I get sometimes when booting ("hasn't been checked in the last X mounts yadda yadda") shows only "fixed write time in the future" from time to time.
    3. The Xorg.0.log particularly gets corrupted after the hard restart that I issue when X fails to start and a black screen locks up the pc.
    4. xf86-video-ati is 6.12.2-2, kernel26 is 2.6.30.4-1. xorg-server: 1.6.3-2. The black screen issue will be (I hope) solved in the other thread I made (link in first post), but I have the suspicion that both problems are very closely related (one is the cause for the other, or some sort of vicious circle.)
