Temporary Machine Freezes After RAM Previews

We're having alot of trouble pinning this down, and are using up alot of time approaching a deadline.
I'm using:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz
8Gb RAM
GeForce 9800 GT with 182.50 Driver
Win XP Pro x64 SP2
with AE CS4
Up until a few weeks ago, this wasn't a problem, but basically, after a RAM preview, and in this case a 700 frames 1050x576 shot, single layer in the comp, no effects, with Task Manager reporting about 2.3Gb RAM in use during the preview - the machine locks up for tens of seconds, sometimes up to a minute or two when I come out of AE.  Can't open drives, can't access anything in fact, then suddenly it comes back and works normally again.  never crashes, just locks you out.
Am I missing something here?  Is this normal?  The point is that through the back end of last year, I spent 14 hour days throwing long HD shots and comps at AE, doing RAM previews, etc., but it all worked fine.  Some slowdowns with that kind of data flowing through, but nothing outrageous.
We spent today swapping out RAM modules, thinking it's a RAM issue, though there are no classic symptoms of RAM failure, but that hasn't helped.  Tons of free space on the two internal drives - 762Gb free on the boot drive, and 347Gb on a second drive.
I would appreciate any ideas as we are up against a difficult and tight deadline, but as ever, this kind of thing happens.
Thanks.
Julian.

Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? If so, make sure that you've got enough RAM reserved for other applications, including the OS. Actually, I'd try just turning Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing off to see if that alone makes your problem go away.
A side note (perhaps not related to your issue): You didn't say whether you had installed the After Effects CS4 (9.0.2) update. That update fixed a lot of bugs.

  • AE CC 2014.2 crashes after RAM preview.

    Hey,
It crashes almost every time after RAM preview. I think it gives an error, but it's buggy and i can't see it correctly. The error box, the timeline, effects tab etc goes completely black. Can't close the program from anywhere else, only from task manager. And what's even more weird - it doesn't let me do a print screen of the crashed UI. What is there to be done?
Can't imagine it's because of the computer. I've got 32gb of RAM, 4gb graphic card with CUDA, i7. 2-3 months old, works perfect with other programs. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Does it do it when your RAM preview with just a solid in your project, and nothing else?

  • After Effects CS4 freezing with RAM preview audio?

Firstly, I'm on a mac.  This problem just started a few hours ago after I made some system updates.  When I hit preview in a comp with audio it runs through the frames, then locks up when it would normally start playing.  I just get that dang spinning beach ball of doom.  If I turn off the audio on the layer, it previews fine.  I believe the only think I had updated when this problem began was upgrading to quicktime 7.6.2.  Would this effect the RAM preview?  Since the problem, I've updated AE to 9.0.2 and OS 10.5.7 with no change.
    Anyone come across something similar?
    Thanks

Mmh, well, seems ominous, but quite obviously QT is somehow involved. do you use any dedicated video hardware such as AJA or BMD cards? If so, the QT update may have introduced an incompatibilty with their drivers... Even if not using any such equipemnt, definitely check your QT system control panel. Also use OnyX to flush your QT components cache. They may just need to re-initilaized to function properly. Short of that I'm not aware of such issues, but anything is possible. If the issue persists, using Pacifist and downgrading your QT may be the only option. What Mac are you on exactly?

  • Unable to create image buffer after RAM preview

Running into an odd and frustrating error. Built a comp using the new Ray-traced 3D renderer and now I'm regretting being an early adopter big time with all the problems I've been encountering with it. The latest comes whenever I do a longer RAM preview in an attempt to watch the whole duration of my comp. It will get to about 170 frames or so, at which point I've interrupted by pressing spacebar because I don't need to see all the way to the end of my work area (around 220 frames). It'll play the RAM preview back fine, and even loop it, but as soon as I stop playback, I get this error message: "After Effects warning: Unable to create image buffer." There's only one button: "okay" and as soon as I click it the same error pops up again and it will never go away, forcing me to close AE from the task manager. I've taken to saving before every RAM preview like I used to do with Flash before previewing my buggy swfs for fear I'll lose all my work after previewing. Any ideas about what might be causing this?
Some more details about my comp:
    1920x1080 @ 29.97
    Ray-traced 3D
About 70 3D layers (I'm guessing this is my downfall - new renderer not designed for this many layers?)

    i7 2600K
    32GB RAM
2x GTX 570 video cards running latest driver (301.42, CUDA 4.2.1)
508GB free on my 2TB internal drive where the project and cache lives

Yeah, some buffer is very likely not flushing when you interrupt the preview and then there is no more memory on the graphics hardware. Consider setting the work area and your preview options to use only the work area. if it finishes the preview "correctly", it may not suffer the issue. Beyond that - raytracing doesn't/ shouldn't care about the number of items. The math is such, that it makes no difference whether you render a million polygons or just one. Of course there are still limitations due to the GPU dependency, but I doubt you ever truly exhaust the cards' geometry buffers. Compared to pixel data that is a small amount...

  • G31M Freezing After RAM Check, Says 1596fsb which might be problem..

    Hello....
Putting together a Dual core duo with a MSI G31M mobo. It keeps resetting itself.. wont even show post.. all i here is one tiny, quick (not loud) beeping. and if it hit DEL or TAB... it will show the corresponding screen, but just frozen.
The insert button thing isnt working either (yes i did total power removal).
It says on the top of the POST screen "Speed: 1596 mhz" which might be the problem...
It freezes after "Init USB controllers: OK | 1015mb..." then it stops..
    Thanks everybody...

    Hi,
your BIOS Version is too old to properly support your E7400.  That is why the CPU Frequency only shows as "1596 mhz" and that is also why the system does this:
    Quote
all i here is one tiny, quick (not loud) beeping. and if it hit DEL or TAB... it will show the corresponding screen, but just frozen.
    Quote
It freezes after "Init USB controllers: OK | 1015mb..." then it stops..
There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by BIOS Version 7.1 to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E7400 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A569MS23.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

  • Time machine freezing after fresh re-install because of recovered corrupt files

    Hi,
I have a Mid 2009 15" MBP running 10.8.2. Recently, my HDD crashed. And my time machine backup on an external HDD failed to mount (perhaps the backup was also corrupt?). I made an image using Disk Drill just in case and got a new HDD from Apple Support. They put in a new HDD and "recovered" my data. Now, the comp was behaving very very funny, freezing suddenly a few minutes after boot, requiring a hard shud-down and frequent kernel panics. So, I copied some of the important data in my Users folder and did a fresh install of ML on the new HDD. I also got a new external HDD and formatted it propoerly and copied back the files onto the fresh install of ML. At this point, I realised that there were certainly some files there that were corrupt(?) because, the copying back caused hanging a couple of times. Anyway, now the comp works just fine, but as soon as I begin a time machine backup, it completely freezes (just like before requiring a hard shut down), after less than a GB backing up. Please help me.

Hate to tell you this but the 2009 model MBPs were built, assembled, with a very cheaply made HDD to Logic board cable and your original drive may be fine and the cable is the thing that is failing.
I suspect this because once a drive fails it is near impossible to get any useful data off it. So if Apple was able to copy your files from the old drive to the new one that drive is probably still OK. And that you are now still having problems with the brand new drive.
No the problems you are having can not be caused by just having corrupted files store on the drive. The only files that are accessed by the operating system, while booting and running the computer, are those operating system files and whatever programs you are running. even if a program access those corrupted files it would not cause problems with the OS but may crash the program that is opening them.
As for TM not working that again is a sign that the cable is bad because TM can't copy the files to its backup over that bad cable.

  • Time machine freezes after restore using migration assistant

after an erase/install done in an Apple Store, I restored my Mac Book from the Time Machine using the migration agent.
To do this I created a temporary admin account and performed the Restore of all users and contents in the backup.
Now logged in as my old user ID the time machine backup starts and identifies that the entire MacBook content needs to be backed up.
TM Backup runs through the prepairing stage and reaches the "Baccking up 'xxx' MB from 'yyy' GB" message.
Then it gets stuck after 120 MB has been backed up. I did run the backup for 2 entire nights in the 2nd night it got stuck after 0 kB had been backed up.
What to I need to do to get TM running again?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Hey Brian James & welcome to the forums.
If you still have the old RAM, put that back into the computer and see how the computer performs. You may find it a little slow, but it shouldn't keep locking up if the new RAM is the issue.

  • My Macbook Pro Freezes after RAM Upgrade

I have a newly purchased macbook pro that came with lion, MC700, with 4GB of ram Default. I purchased CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 from newegg to give me 8GB of ram. After installing the RAM, if i use the macbook for extneded periods of time the screen will hardlock, graphics artifacting is seen on screen and it beeps, causing me to hard shut down the unit. This is most noticeable when using Youtube HD or watching a DVD movie. I ran apple hardware diagnostics and it says everything is fine, I also ran memtest overnight with no errors. Thinking this might be a corrupt lion install i reinstalled clean and still get the issue. I bootcamped windows 7 x64 onto the unit and it will BSOD and hardlock just like lion would. I used the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and it said no errors. My return time has expired for both the macbook (purchased at a best buy) and the RAM (from newegg). I know i can contact corsair but I dont know if that will even help, any ideas? My system is up to date with the newest updates as well.

I forgot to put that in the OP, when putting back the 4gb stock it works fine, but doesnt solve my issue. THe ram tests fine, is the MBP just that picky? I know i can RMA with corsair but there really isnt anything wrong with said ram its like its overheating when the new ram is put in

  • Time Machine freezes after clicking "back up now"

Whenever I click "back up now" to start a Time Machine backup, the top of finder "rainbow wheels" and freezes for good.  The only way to get out of it is to restart the computer (relaunching finder does not fix it).
OK, so why not let time machine just back up on its own?  It doesn't do that, either - when the time for the "next backup" arrives, time machine simply pushes the time back by one hour (if it was scheduled for 1:00 PM and the time arrives, Time Machine just re-schedules it for 2:00 PM).  It does this forever - it won't back up!
The hard drive is a brand new 1 TB that is completely error free.  I am running OS X Mavericks 10.9.3.
Is this a known problem?  Any suggestions on getting around this?
    Thanks!

Wow, thanks for the help everyone!
Just in case anyone else has this issue, I solved it by re-installing Mavericks (not re-imaging/erasing) over my existing installation.  I'm guessing it was a bug with finder that was causing it.  Time Machine is now backing up without a problem.

  • [Resolved] Ath9k driver, machine freezing after brief period on wifi

I'm new to ArchLinux, and having a rough time with the install. I'm able to boot off of my usb, and begin configuring things, but it's not allowing me to be connected to my wifi. It lets me connect, and one attempt actually lasted for about half an hour, but it always eventually freezes and requires a hard reboot. The output to the screen, or dmesg, always contains "DMA failed to connect after 10 ms" and "Could not stop RX", which seem to be fairly common errors with this driver, with no clear solution. More specifically, I'm able to associate, but when I ask for an IP address these errors begin happening, eventually resulting in the system freezing. I'm not even sure how to debug something like this. Any help at all would be very appreciated.

I'm not really sure what information I should be including (though there is no doubt information lacking), but here's a followup. I managed to tether through my tablet to get the base packages installed and grub configured, so I'm now booting properly. My shell comes up but when I try to set up a wifi connection the problem persists.
    If I type
    dmesg -w
in one terminal, switch to another, type
    wifi-menu
select my network and enter my password (wpa2), and then watch the output of dmesg, it looks like:
ath: phy0: Failed to stop TX DMA, queues=0x004!
ath: phy0: Failed to stop TX DMA, queues=0x004!
    ath: phy0: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms AR_CR=0x00000024 AR_DIAG_SW=0x42000020 DMADBG_7=0x00006040
ath: phy0: Could not stop RX, we could be confusing the DMA engine when we start RX up
I'm really eager to continue experimenting with arch, but it seems somewhat pointless to work on installing a desktop environment if I can't configure a wifi connection. Is it possible that the current version of arch just won't work with my wireless adapter (DWA-552)?  Would I be further ahead to restart with a more beginner friendly version of linux and see if it will support my wireless card? I`m starting to feel like quite a noob

  • HP LJ 4250 freezing after RAM check

    Hi all.
I have a printer LJ 4250dtn which is working ok since 4 years at least.
Today I switched it off and when I switched it on again it made the check of the RAM (IAMB) , then I saw all the 3 light (printer ready, Data, Warning) on the left the control panel switch on for about 1-2  seconds and they immediately switch off.
On the display the 80MB count of the RAM followed by 2 rows of asterisks stays freezed forever.
I tried to remove RAM and in this case the display switches on without any strings.
I tried to clean its DIMM, without any results. No error messages. Any idea?
    TIA for any answer

  • Computer freezes after RAM increase

I have a Compaq desktop with this motherboard MCP61PM-HM rev 2.2 running windows 7.
Made a memory increase from 2GB to 8GB with 4 compatible memmory sticks. Computer launches windows but then freezes. I can see it recognises the 4 memmory sticks and it keeps working in safe mode but not in normal mode.
Tried the different sticks, they all seem ok and work well until 3 (6Gb); when I add the 4th one (8Gb) it crashes again.
    What should I do? thanks

    Yes!! you are correct
This unit should support upto 8GB Memory Module and you can confirm the same by looking into the below shown link.

  • No audio in Ram Preview

Hi. I'll try and be a short and detailed as I can. After Effects CS5.5. Import an audio track or video containing audio and I cannot hear audio during playback after Ram Preview is created. I can hold the control key and scrub audio. Audio renders when I render the project. I can do an Audio Preview only, but I cannot seem to figure out how to see the graphics (which are animated to the audio itself) and hear the audio play back at the same time. This creates a unique problem when creating graphics which are timed to the audio. Do I really need to render the entire project every time I want to preview my work?
    Thanks...

Well let me try to give you the big picture (pun intended)
What you can't see here: I use a Bose 2.1 speaker system (not that that has any impact).
Audio renders fine, scrubs fine, I can do an audio preview fine but NEVER both an audio and video preview.
