Testing failover

I am brand new to MS Failover clustering.   I have created from the checklists that microsoft provides a 2-node failover cluster with Windows 2008 in my test lab.   I setup SQL Server as the application.   When I did a failover
test, all the services and applications and disk drives and network came up as "online" or "up".   Sounds like it worked But does this mean that all the process for failover have completed?  The reason i ask is because I
need to down the nodes for our SQL DBAs to work on the SQL instance.   I am told this will cause another failover.   So, I wonder if there is a time lag that I need to consider before downing the servers.

You're doing wrong thing. Generic Windows cluster is by far the best thing to keep SQL Server up & running. You really need to use SQL Server own built-in clustering features (some of them being built on top of a MS cluster either way but that's another
story). It's DBA job to configure one. For more details see:

  • Replicated machines to Azure - started Test Failover but cannot RDP to the hosts

Just replicated two VM's into Azure from my on premises test servers.
They are in Azure fine but when I do  a test failover they end up in a state Waiting for Action.  That I discover is waiting for me to take some action on the server.
I try to RDP to the servers(I do have RDP endpoints defined) but always get an error about not being able to connect.
The onpremises servers have RDP enabled (which is how I access them) but to make sure I also put in exceptions in Firewall for RDP for all networks and waiting for the settings to replicate.
Based on another thread I tried to telnet to the server
    telnet servername-test.cloudapp.net 49839
    but get no response.
I also created a VM in Azure directly and I can access that one fine using RDP.  Based on another suggestion I tried to RDP to my replicated servers using this test VM (assuming that went through the internal Azure cloud network, not the Internet) but
    still no joy.
I have also tried to resize the server, shut it down and bring it up but that also didn't change anything.
Basically I am now at an impasse so any hints on further actions I can take would be really helpful.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please confirm if you have followed the same procedure to replicate the VM from On-premise to Azure:

  • Testing failover, how to reproduce ORA-24505: transaction status unknown

    Database Version:11.2.0.2 psu 2
    RAC 2-node
    SUSE 11
    Dataguard fast start failover
During testing of failover to the standby database we had a problem with taf, oracle reported an error 24505, the application trapped the error ignored it and then failed by attempting to re-insert the same data and recieving a primary key violation. My understanding is that this is one of the possible errors when using TAF and the application should trap the error and then determine if the transaction was completed before either replaying the transaction or continuing. We have raised this as a bug withthe application developers, however we need to reliably test for this condition and due to the nature of the problem we can not reliable reproduce the error condition and setting up the system to execute the failover makes repeatedly testing and hoping to encounter the error impractical.
Is there a method to force this error condition for both possible states? i.e. failover and force an ORA-24505 to be returned with the transaction having completed and also return ORA-24505 withthe transaction having rolledback.
    Chris

We have arleady raised an SR, I am curious however as to how others test these types of issues as some of the taf errors are very rare.

  • How to test node failover in Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster?

Can anyone give me advice on how to properly test a node failure with a 2 mode Failover Cluster in Windows 2008 R2?

To test the failover of a clustered service or application
In the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in, if the cluster that you want to configure is not displayed, in the console tree, right-click
Failover Cluster Manager, click Manage a Cluster, and then select or specify the cluster that you want.
If the console tree is collapsed, expand the tree under the cluster that you want to configure.
Expand Services and Applications, and then click the service or application for which you want to test failover.
Under Actions (on the right), click Move this service or application to another node.
As the service or application moves, the status is displayed in the results pane (center pane).
Optionally, repeat step 4 to move the service or application to an additional node or back to the original node.

  • N+1 5508 WLC failover test

    Good day all,
I have a question about the N+1 5508 failover test:
Should I shutdown one of the primary WLC to test failover?
    I just setup the N+1 bakcup WLC (5508). B
    Based on: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/hi_avail/N1_High_Availability_Deployment_Guide.pdf
We have two production WLCs both 5508 and one 4405.
We just purchased another HA-SKU WLC 5508.
All our four WLCs had been setup into one mobility group in version 7.4.100.6.
    Their neighbors are all up.
But our test AP could not register to the Backup N+1 WLC. ( We are using option 43 in our DHCP server for all the AP boot.)

  • Testing dataguard failover

    Dear All,
I am kindanew in oracle dataguard implementation. I want to know how to test failover scenario. I have shutdown the server which contain the primary database but i still dont know how to test the scenario. I keep on executing "select mode from v$database" on the standby database but it still shows mounted state.
    Kindly help
    Regards
    Karam.

First test switchover ... does that work? The commands are well documented all over the net including on my website "MorgansLibrary.org"
If switchover works then the next question is have you configured for failover? If so how? In what version? etc. etc. etc.
We need details to be able to provide advice.

  • Xsan 2.x Failover: How to test, How does it occur ?

    Hi,
I have a few questions about Xsan 2.x failover, hope to seek some advice here.
According to this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3315
The following events may result in failover of all Xsan volumes:
    - The active MDC is unreachable by the secondary MDC via the ethernet network used for metadata communications.
    - The active MDC is rebooted or shutdown.
The following events will result in failover of a specific Xsan volume:
    - The active MDC cannot see one or more LUNs associated with the volume.
    - Xsan Admin or cvadmin is used to failover a volume.
We tried to simulate a failover, by disconnect the Primary MDC from the Xsan private network, similar to the 1st condition mentioned above.
However the Xsan FC client did not "failover" correctly.
The next failover test was to shutdown the Primary MDC, and this test was successful.
I'm curious in an event of a faulty network port on the Primary MDC, as simulated by disconnecting the network cable, or a faulty FC cable/FC card (which is used to communicate metadata, journal information to the Promise VTrak storage), does it warrant a failover as well?
It seems like the official way to test a failover is to use "Force Failover" in Xsan Admin.
    Is this correct?
    Cheers,
Ben Cheng · Application Engineer · The Media Village Pte Ltd

Before I start ripping cables to test failover, I always test volume failover in cvadmin. Open Terminal, type "sudo cvadmin", select your volume and type "fail MyXsanVolume". If that works well then you can go get a beer. If cvadmin properly reports the FQDN of my Xsan IPs then I get another beer, if I can fail the volume back and forth between controllers, then I get a keg, the day is done.

  • Failover Testing with and with out Broker, flashback.

    Hi,
We have a requirement, where we need test the Fail over on production database. Currently we have 11.2.0.3 on Linux as production and same on another machine as Standby. We did not enabled DG Broker and Flashback in any databases. I want below information:
    1) How to test failover with out DG Broker and Flashback in any databases?
    2) How to enable both DG broker and Flashback and test failover with DG Broker and Flashback?
    3) How can i revert back the changes after Failover i.e., i want to see the production as production and standby as standby like earlier.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Test DB failover senior with veritas

    Hi experts,

  • Setting up Access Manager and Directory Server for Failover.

I'm setting up 2 Access Managers AM1,AM2 and 2 Directory Servers DS1 and DS2 for failover. I've connected AM1 and AM2 to DS1. Suffixes of DS1 is replicated to DS2. Any change made to AM1 is replicated to AM2 as expected. I just patched AM1 with Access Manager patch 1 and the version information for AM1 shows 7.1 126359-01. I followed the same procedure to patch AM2 but AM2 still shows ver 7.1.
How do I make sure both Access Managers are patched to the same version?
I'm able to authenticate to one IIS6 site and authentication is passed on to Outlook Web Access on AM1 but when I shut down AM1 to test failover to AM2 OWA prompts me again for password. How do I resolve this?
On AM1 http://host.domain/amserver/UI/Login?realm=sso successfully logs in but the same on AM2 gives Warning that "You have already logged in. Do you want to log out and then login to a different organization?"
    Please help !!!

I'll answer what bits I can:
Q: AM showing the same version?
A: No idea on this one. I would have expected the operation you described to have produced the right answer. Check that neither your application server nor your web browser are caching old pages (ctrl-F5 in my browser)
Q: How do I resolve re-authentication on failover?
A: The AM documentation includes a deployment example that covers pretty closely what it is you are trying to achieve:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2278
Specifically, the problem you are describing is related to session failover. The sessions are stored in a local DB so when you failover the backup server does not store the same information and hence requires a reauthentication. The section of the above doc that deals with this is here:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2278/gdsre?l=en&a=view
Q: "You have already logged in" warning
    A: No idea. Sorry.

  • Failover is not working in clustering

we installed infrastructure in the one system and added 2 instances app1.mycompany.com,app2.mycompany.com into it.
for loadbalancing we r using webcache.
we configured origin servers, site definitions,site-server mappings.
in the cluster two instances showing up.
that we can see in health monitor in Up/Down* parameter of web cache administrator console.
we deployed same ear in two instances.
but when i down one instance say app1.mycompany.com,
In the health monitor its not showing up DOWN parameter for host: app1.mycompany.com.same for UP also.
immediately its not showing changes when i am testing failover.
Is webcache loadbalancing is Round robin based ?
when i down one of the instances session replication is not happening properly.sometimes session expired is coming.
when 2 instances r up if user access application all the requests r coming to one instance if down that instance session expired is coming.
i think failover is not working in clustering.
i checked replication properties and added <distributable> tag in both the instances.
in webcache console page what will sessionbinding will do?i have not configured anything.

    Why are you using Webcache?
Web cache will certainly work, but its more common role is to more access as a simple load balancer over HTTP servers, not OC4J instances.
What I'd do is to simplify your situation to verify you have the server setup correctly.
That means using the Oracle HTTP Server which will be part of your cluster as the common routing point. OHS and mod_oc4j are session state aware and know about all the OC4J instances. In the situation where an OC4J instance dies for some reason, mod_oc4j will know to which other OC4J instance(s) the request can be routed to pickup the replicated session state.
Once you have verified that the failover is working on the backend, you can then configure another OHS instance and position webcache in front of them to act as a request router and failover handler for when the OHS instances are inactive.
The Enterprise Deployment Guide offers some guidance in typical architectures, well worth a read.

  • IE 9.0 proxy failover not working correctly - Is there a bug fix or IE setting to correct this behavior

I am testing proxy pac file  failover using IE 9.0.8112 and testing three choices using an automatic configuration file.  I shut down the first proxy to test the fail over to the second. Firefox 20.0.1 and chrome work correctly, but IE 9.0 does
not. My snip-it is as follows:
    return "PROXY 192.168.11.12:8080; PROXY 192.168.11.195:8080; DIRECT";
With ie8, firefox and chrome the fail over to the next proxy entry during a PROXY 192.168.11.12 fail over works correct and as follows:
Proxy 192.168.11.12 times out after about 25-30 seconds and then proxy 192.168.11.195 is attempted and the web page is displayed.
Then all url lookups after this time are made through proxy 192.168.11.195 and are quick. This is how proxy fail over should work.
When I test with ie9 it works as follows:
Proxy 192.168.11.12 times out after about 25-30 seconds and then proxy 192.168.11.195 is attempted and the web page is displayed.
Then all following url lookups take 30 -45 seconds because it always tries the first PROXY 192.168.11.12 first before attempting proxy 192.168.11.195
because it does not remember first Proxy 192.168.11.12 is not available.
Is there a setting or bug opened on this behavior????

Not to be pedantic, but the proxy.pac file is JavaScript... :)
You might be experiencing an issue with IE's automatic proxy caching, described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271361 . Basically, the choice of which proxy to use is decided once per requested host, and the decision is cached. So, if you
are testing failover by accessing resources on the same host before and after shutting off the first proxy, IE will still insist on using that proxy address for subsequent requests. If you test a second host and get a more timely response, then I would say
this is what you are seeing.
You can experimentally disable this feature by setting...
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "EnableAutoProxyResultCache"=dword:00000000"
...in the registry for your test user. I imagine a reboot will be required.

  • Recommended port-security settings for ASA HA failover

I have a pair of ASA 5510s configured in active/standby mode. I have already configured the failover settings on the firewalls. Both firewalls are connected to a 2960G. I made a change to the interfaces on the 2960 to allow 2 mac addresses on each port. Here is the switch port config:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/8
    description ASA-Primary-Out
    switchport access vlan 200
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security maximum 2
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security aging time 2
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security aging type inactivity
ip arp inspection limit rate 500
    no cdp enable
    spanning-tree portfast
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
Upon testing failover via the failover active command, I get port-security errors on the outside interface for each device:
%PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security violation occurred, caused by MAC address aaaa.bbbb.cccc on port GigabitEthernet0/8. After a few minutes, the error goes away and I can then connect to each firewall. It seems that it still waits for the aging time to expire before allowing the other MAC address. Shouldn't the "maximum 2" setting allow for both mac addresses?
I'd rather not have to hardcode the firewall's MAC addresses on each switchport because I could see this causing problems for us down the road. Is there anything else that can be done?

    Hello,
This is expected because of the way ASA failover works. When a failover event occurs, the 2 units will swap their IP and MAC addresses (i.e. the Active unit is always using the same IP and MAC, but this role changes between the 2 physical units).
    Per the port-security config guide:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_25_fx/configuration/guide/swtrafc.html#wp1090391
"...if a station with a secure MAC address configured or learned on one secure port attempts to access another secure port, a violation is flagged."
Since the MAC address moves to the other switchport when the failover happens, a violation is being logged.
