Tethered cellphone as a modem on Solaris 10

I'm looking to use a cell phone with a data package tethered to a Solaris 10 sparc64 laptop as a modem to access the Internet. Has anyone had any success or failures attempting to do this?

Hi,
Does anyone know if it's possible to mount /tmp as a filesystem in Solaris 10? That's the default. I'm guessing you mean to mount it as a UFS filesystem instead?
My server is running Veritas Volume Manager 5.0 and the boot drive is encapsulated. After I change vfstab to mount /tmp as a standard filesystem, the server goes into single user mode whenever I reboot. It complains that it is unable to find the volume device for the /tmp filesystem. I also notice that the diskgroup where the /tmp volume resides is not imported so it seems like Veritas is not initialized at this point. How did you create the filesystem you want to use for /tmp? What does your vfstab entry look like? Almost certainly the error is there.
On a side note, I have been able to mount /tmp as a filesystem in the past in Solaris 9./tmp is a filesystem by default on all versions of Solaris. I think you're trying to say something else here.

  • Issues with Modem on solaris

    Hi All,
I have installed Solaris 10 on an intel x86 pc, im trying to set it up as a Hylafax server.
I have a DIGI Accelport RAS 4 port analogue card. which is installed properly, and i manage to add it to hylafax with no problem, only problem im experiencing is Hylafax doesnt answer the call when phone line rings.
I believe i need to run a getty to monitor port and answer calls but im not sure how to...
when i add modem to hylafax, hylafax communicates properly and followign are the results it shows after communicating
    ModemAnswerCmd: AT+FCC=,,,,1;A
    ModemFlowControl: rtscts
    ModemHardFlowCmd: AT&K3
    ModemNoFlowCmd: AT&K0
    ModemRate: 19200
    ModemSoftFlowCmd: AT&K4
i am able to connect using tip (tip -9600 /dev/cua/dgrasa01), and can see ring ring signals coming in.
If i add a standard modem on com port 1 and add it to hylafax, it works properly and call gets answered
    any help will be great.

If hylafax is communicating with the modem, I don't see how this can be an OS problem.
It looks like the program expects to answer the modem explicitly. In your monitor test with 'tip', try entering the ModemAnswerCmd to the modem after [RING] appears. Does the modem go off hook after you enter it? If not, it could be a modem problem or perhaps the string is incorrect. Maybe just try the simple "ATA" string.
If you need the modem to autoanswer, I think you have to set S0 to the number of rings to wait. At 0, autoanswer is disabled.
You wouldn't run a getty for the modem unless you wanted to send an ASCII login screen to the other side. Not appropriate for a FAX server.

  • Internal modem and solaris

    Hi,
can internal modems be run on solaris? Or solaris just hates to recognize them?

    Hello.
Most internal modems are so-called "winmodems".
This means that the modem is more or less a sound card; the actual data processing is done by special algorithms in the modem software.
The name "winmodems" come from the fact that the manufacturers normally only provide software for Windows. Sometimes they sell software for Linux (but this costs additional money).
Because the manufacturers do not provide software for Solaris you won't get the modem running.

  • Installation of solaris 10 on 2 similar sparcs

    Hi.
I have 2 t5120 sun enterprise systems. One is complete installed and RAID -1 was configured using hardware raid- raidctl on both systems.
I wanted to know if there is an easy way I can just take out the second disk (disk in right side slot when I am in front of front panel) from installed and running machine and insert into another t5120 in left slot ( I assume that it is going to be primary) and I will get a running OS on second machine without having to install OS again.
Is this doable ?I may be missing some steps , if so please correct me because last time I tried I got following errors :
    Quote:
    ERROR: boot-read fail

OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Communication
    Conexant
    HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Network
    Intel Corporation
    *82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Multimedia
    Intel Corporation
    HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
    Thanks.

  • Installation of solaris 10 on x86 intel dual core or core 2 duo

    hi all,
while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
    / -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
after selecting it boots with solaris and
    after few seconds it restarts
please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors
    looking for the good reply

  • 6301 USE AS A PC MODEM

    Hi there - help please.
I use Nokia PC suite version 7.0.9.2 and when I try to connect to the internet from my LT [via blue tooth connection] either automatically or using manual settings mode it comes up with errors. 'Failed to connect - modem may be in use or incorrectly configured'.
I use Orange data services and have checked the connection settings - I can browse from the phone without difficulty.
Its really annoying that I cannot use this feature and having searched the forum and elsewhere, am a bit stuck for ideas how to resolve this configuration issue.
    All help appreciated.
    Best Regards, Ian

Today I had a conversation with a tier three tech at T-mobile regarding the 6301. In passing he stated that some of the UMA phones had opted to cripple the tethering (use for a modem) in order to make UMA work. This may be a t-mobile exclusive for the tethering problem, but I would guess that it is the firmware that prevents it.
