Texas Instruments SD card reader not writing to card

I'm having trouble getting a Texas Instruments 6-in-1 card reader to write to SD cards. It is built into an HP Pavilion DV5215us notebook, lspci:

Using the 2.6.19.2 kernel with the tifm_core, tifm_sd, tifm_7xx1 modules on a fully up to date voodoo install (just pacman -Syu'd this morning). I can read from the SD fine at full speed, but as soon as I try to write a file to it the device disappears from KDE mediamanager and nothing gets written. Here's the dmesg output from when I insert the card and start writing a 101mb tarball:

Tried with a 2gb SD card and a 512mb one, same effect. Couldn't find much on google other then how-to's that don't specifically note inability to write to cards, which makes me think someone has gotten write support working. If anyone has gotten this hardware to write to SD cards I'd like to know how you did it. Thanks for reading.

If I can mount the card writing to it works, but I have a strange problem here.
Sometimes when I insert a SD card udev creates /dev/mmcblk0 and I can't mount it.
And sometimes, with the same card, udev creates /dev/mmcblk0p1 and I CAN mount it.
I read that its handled like a hard-disk, but don't remember where and if my memories are correct. However...
mmcblk0 is the disk
mmcblk0p1 is the first partition
Anybody knows how to solve this udev problem?

• Alcor card reader not recognising SD card, Windows 8.1

My card reader stopped reading my SD card (formatted for Nikon SLR). I hunted around and saw that the only new software on the PC was the Alcor software, so I uninstalled it and, hey presto!, the card reader works again.
However, the HP update service keeps reinstalling the software - every time it does, the card reader stops working until I uninstall it.
How can I resolve this?
Thanks.
HP Pavilion p6-2388ea, Windows 8.1 64-bit

Hi oldblackswan,
Open HP Support Assistant (HPSA).
Click "Settings".
Then select "check for updates but let me choose when to download and install".
This will stop HPSA from automatically reinstalling the Alcor driver.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller if it's in warranty. Your Mac will be repaired or replaced for free because it looks a hardware problem rather than a software issue.
If it's not in warranty, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook is starting up, and reinstall OS X. If it doesn't work, you can't do much more to solve the problem

• Sd card reader not working for mac pro, sd card reader not working for mac pro

SD CARD SLOT NOT RECOGNIZING SD CARD?

SD Cards not reading! Read here!
I had the same problem with my MBP-R-15". So I took a look inside the SD Card slot and noticed a contact point on the side. For the SD card to be noticed this needs to be pressed in by the SD Card or it cant be read.
Solution:
Make sure your SD Card read/write selector switch is up away from contacts. This will ensure it makes contact with the internal MBP contact switch.
Now slide your SD Card into the MBP SD Slot, and gently push it towards you (if your facing your MBP to type).
This will allow the SD Card to make contact the internal slot "switch" and it will be recognized.
It is tricky but easy enouph to deal with.
Internal switch is sticking over time.

• Why does my macbook pro's built-in card reader not detect my SD card?

I have a Macbook Pro 15-inch Retina (Late 2013) and it has a built-in card reader. My SD card was working perfectly with the reader some days back, however, now it has all of a sudden stopped working! The funny thing is that when I put the same SD card into an external card reader connected to the same macbook, it works perfectly. Also, strangely, my card reader still works perfectly well with another SD card I have.
So, both the card reader and the SD card appear to be working separately, but why are they not working together?

two things to try
1. Reset SMC data. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
2. Do not push the card(s) all the way into the slot . back it out a fraction 1/16-1/8 inch until it appears in finder/desktop/etc...

• Dc7800 "smart card reader not present" during POST

Hi,
I've got a dc7800 Small Form Factor system. It was working fine but after a reboot it won't start up normally anymore. The black POST screen appears, RAM testing starts to count up and then I see and error about "system options not set". After less than a second, a blue window in the middle of the screen displays the message "smart card authentication" and below that, "smart card reader not present".
From a bit of reading it seems like a BIOS problem but I can't figure out how to really reset the CMOS and get things working again. I've tried removing the CMOS jumper and booting the system, removing the power cord and CMOS battery for 10 minutes, and have tried putting a BIOS .bin file on a FAT32 USB key in an attempt to use the BIOS recovery option, none of which has worked.
Is there a way to do one of the following:
- force the CMOS defaults to reset and remove the configuration that requires the smart card authentication?
- force a BIOS recovery, with a key combination or by using a different jumper or jumpers on the motherboard?
I see various other jumpers and pads on the motherboard like "ROM RCVRY" and the E15 Boot Block Recovery Header but scant information about how these might be used to solve the problem.
It seems to me that the hardware is fine as it powers up and displays the POST screen. It's like a BIOS setting has been reset to require a smart card, even though there isn't one, nor even a smart card reader, in the system.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
JS

Hi:
After doing some research on the message, I came across this post.
I guess your PC has a smart card optional system.
http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Compaq-Elite-Pro/DC7800-smart-card-athentication/m-p/10691...
Now, if you can get into the BIOS menus, if you look at the top of page 8, you will see what you need to do in order to enable/disable the smart card reader message.

Whatever the problem is, it is a security setting issue, and clearing the CMOS or updating the BIOS will not have any effect on that setting.
Unfortunately, I have no experience with the security settings or protect tools software on HP business PC's.
I have a dc7800 (and only use HP business desktops and notebooks), so I am very familiar with all the other aspects of the PC but that one.
You may want to post your issue on the HP business support forum, business PC section. Hopefully someone there has experience with turning this feature on or off.

You may also want to log in and reply to that post, but don't get your hopes up that it will be answered.
RichS hasn't replied to a post in 3 years. Although someone else may.
Good luck, and please post back if you find the solution to the problem.

• Pavilion dv6 sd card reader not working

I have searched the boards and have not found an answer to my built in SD card reader not working any more. It worked fine until a couple weeks ago. When I go to "my computer", the sd card does not show up as an available drive. I have tried several cards with no luck. The cards work fine when I use a USB card reader, just not the built in one.
I checked the driver in device manager - at least the one I believe is the correct one - Realtec PCIE Card Reader.
Any other ideas? It is a pain having to carry around an extra card reader. Thanks for the help

Good morning rv9a.
Prior to the uninstall did the computer make a noise to indicate it recognized the card when you put it in?
You should go ahead and reinstall the specific driver for the card reader just to make sure that doesn't have an effect on the issue. Here is the link for Windows 7 and here is the link for Windows 8.
Another possibility is the the Plug and Play service is deactivated. Try the following to check.
Press the Windows+R keyboard shortcut.
Type "services.msc" into the box and click okay.
Scroll down until you find "Plug and Play" in the list.
Ensure that it is started. If it is not right-click on the service and select Start or Enable.
I'll keep an eye out for your response; have a great day!

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
''(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)''
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item:

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode''
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

Thank you.

• Card reader not recognized in Windows Explorer

My Dell XPS 8500 has an internal card reader. An inserted card was always recognized as soon as it was inserted. After installing Lightroom, the inserted card is no longer recognized by My Computer until after I start lightroom and begin the import process. I would prefer to copy my photos from the card to a chosen file on my hard drive without Lightroom's intervention. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Are you saying Windows Explorer doesn't show the card reader as a drive letter (E: or other letter), but LR does? Please take a screenshot of the LR Import screen and Windows Explorer screens as shown below. On my system the card reader appears as drive I: in both Windows Explorer and LR's Import module:

• HT201209 I have an itunes card with a balance on it. How do I purchase additional music (the steps) on this card and not a credit card.

I received a itunes gift card for $15. I purchased a CD for 9.99 and have a balance left. I now want to purchase a song for $1.29 but itunes is taking me to my credit card and not my gift card balance. What are the steps for this to come from the gift card balance and not credit card. How do I redeem?

Just to confirm, you are logged into the iTunes Store using the account in which the balance exists, and the balance is showing at the top of the iTunes Store window? And you're not trying to purchase gifts for someone else?

• HT5172 My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my card reader (with a CF card inserted).

My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my USB card reader with a CF card inserted. It works fine on my old Macbook Pro.
Do I need a new card reader? USB 3 perhaps?
I would appreciate any input that you may have. Thank you.

Hi, closereaching. Instead of spending 12 hours reinstalling your operating system and getting everything back up to date again, which probably won't accomplish anything, why not buy a $10 USB card reader for your Casio's SD card? Or (more expensive, but a much more elegant solution), an ExpressCard SD card reader that can stay in your computer all the time?
