Text on iPhone

I was given an old iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1.2, and am stubborn enough to expect it to work. Typing text is taking me five times as long as it did on my old non-smart phone. Please explain to me how I can...
Skip over characters (like the left-right arrow keys does on a normal keyboard).
Activate predictive completion (Example, I type "Amer" and it fills the "ica".)
get the cursor to move to where I tap. This is successful about one time in ten taps on average, and often if I tap on the first character of a long phone number, it just places the cursor at the end.
One other annoyance is that the language changes on a whim. It was installed as Chinese and I've changed it to English, but from time to time it switches to Chinese within an app, such as Contacts. If I press the bottom button twice, it will go back to the main menu (or to a reduced-size row of "pages" and I can then tap the reduced main menu to get the main menu), which will be in English again. Can I lock the language so it never changes, or am I accidentally touching a "language switcher" button somewhere on the screen?

I am a teacher and it, it should be pretty obvious by my participation here, that I am also a geek. I'm pretty proud of both of those things so I don't want to be less like that.
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Directing you to the manual (and the specific page on the manual, I might add) will help you not only with this question but with the other basic questions you may have. Unless, of course, you're too lazy to help educate yourself. We teachers hate that.
Auto-correct works is what Apple calls predictive text. As you type, it will give you suggestions. I will leave you to explore the rest of how that works in the manual.
Best of luck.

  • Not receiving texts from iPhone contacts when I'm not connected to wifi or cell data. I can't send and receive regular SMS texts with non iMessage users but iMessage users message are not being converted to text when I don't have internet connect

I can send and receive to any non iPhone user. I can send a message as a text to an iPhone user but if I'm not connected to cellular data or wifi I do not receive messages from iPhone contacts. From what I understand these message should automatically send to me as texts instead of iMessages but since the update it's not functioning properly. Please help. I've tried turning iMessage off and I still don't receive the messages until after I reconnect to wifi.

I have the same problem! Before the upgrade, if I wasn't connected to the internet, any messages sent to me from an iphone would convert automatically to a text message. I have payg tarriff, so I turn cell data off, as it costs too much to use it. I have wifi at home and work, but if I'm out and about, I don't receive texts from iphone users until I'm on wifi. I get them ok from non iphone users. There was never any problem until ios7

  • Why am I being charged to text another iPhone user from my iPhone

I have a pre-paid AT&T phone and am charged per text.   Normally it uses iMessage when I text other iPhone users and I am not charged.  When my friend that also has some kind of pre-paid, non-standard plan (not AT&T, t-molbie, or verizon) texts me on her iphone, I am charged for it.  Initally, I had some problems with being charged from other iphone users, but that may have been resolved when my IPad captured of the text first, before the phone did.
anyone had any experience with fixing this?

    Hi,
Did you or can you set up the new iPhone from a Backup of the Old one ?
They would have to be at the same Level of OS
iMessages are deleted from the iMessages servers as soon as that are accepted by the device they were sent to.
Essentially they are duplicated if you have more than one device and each then gets it's own "Copy" as they are push to each registered device based on unique login info.
Therefore there is is no simple "Download" old iMessages.
SMS items are also unlikely to be kept by the servers.

  • Select, Copy and Paste text - the iPhone can't do that either???

Select, Copy and Paste text - the iPhone can't do that either??? OK, this is pretty lame...the iPhone does not allow you to select, copy or paste text in SMS, Notes, Safari or Mail. Is this just a oversight on the part of Apple?

Apple left out a LOT of basic functionality from the iPhone. I think they believe that the 'sexiness factor' will far outweigh the need for functionality in getting this phone to sell. For the most part they were right. Now that most of us have realized what this phone cannot do, and that the honeymoon is over (well, for the most part) I hope that Apple will do include some of that basic functionality in future updates. I also hope that the 3G phone is not the answer to this because that will leave out a lot of users who want these basic features but who dont really want 3G.

  • With iPad 2 I can use Messages to text other iPhone users, but not others.

With iPad 2 I can use Messages to text other iPhone users, but when I try others I get the big red x on the contact. I have upgrade to Iso 6. According to the help on Messages, it should have the capability to text outside Apple Products

I suggest asking Verizon.  Standard SMS text messaging is a cellular carrier function.

  • TS2755 unable to recieve texts from iphones

I switched from apple to android and now I cant recieve texts from iphones. I have unregistered number from apple and have turned off imessage. How do I fix this problem?

Sorry, that should have been done before you did the switch. Found this online. Hope it helps
Unfortunately, there isn't a list of steps you can perform on your own. Instead, you need to call 1-800-MY-APPLE in order to have Apple manually de-register your phone number from the Apple servers. In order to do this, make sure you have yourApple ID on hand as well as the phone number in question.
To expedite the process of your call, be sure to ask for technical support when calling in. Then just tell them you're switching to a smartphone that isn't an iPhone and you can't receive messages so you need them to manually unregister you from the iMessage servers.

  • Texting on iPhone 5.  When texting to multiple people why does the contact list return to the "A"s after you select a contact and try to add the next one in order?

Texting on iPhone 5.  When texting to multiple people why does the contact list return to the "A"s after you select a contact and try to add the next one in order?  This really slows you down when trying to contact 50 people with information.  iPhone 4 worked just fine.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures.  Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
No, that's just wasting space.  A back up needs to be on a different disk.
Your photos are within the iPhoto Library.
