TextEdit doesn't properly edit Plist files anymore?

Was browsing through some Plist files, opening them with TextEdit to edit them like I needed to, and in Leopard and every version before that, it would give me all the good stuff, like:
"<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Xxxxx</key>
<string>Xxxxx</string>
</dict>
</plist>"
But now, it only shows:
"XxxxxXxxxx"
What gives?

As Tom and William pointed out, TextEdit won't do what you want because the plists were changed to binary. I had not noticed that QuickLook would still display the plain text form of the plists...that's just weird. However, if you really want to edit in a text editor (personally I would infinitely prefer to edit them with Apple's own Property List Editor in Developer Tools), TextWrangler will still open a plain text version.

It is free and very versatile.

  • Can't edit any files anymore - DTR is grayout in NWDS

    Hi Experts,
    For some reason I can't edit any files anymore, i.e. when right click on order.jsp, DTR is grayout. Seems like it happened after I reinstalled NWDS and reimported projects. I tried Sync sources, it did not help.
    Any suggestions / advises?
    Thanks, Jin

    Hi,
    Right now do you have any open activities? If so, is it on the same jsp file?
    If you have a open activity, obviously you will not edit option for the same file again.
    If that is not the case, there might be an update in your track. You need to perform "Update Configuration" on your track. go to Inactive Dc's -> Right click on your track and select "Update Configuration".
    You can also try, Closing and re opening the NWDS and logging in to NWDI again.
    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Jaya.

  • I can't edit NEF files anymore

    Hi. I'veI've recently bought Photoshop touch and edited a NEF file. I've opened it in RawDroid Pro and choose to edit using Photoshop. Now I can't do it anymore. After I choose what programming I would like to use Photoshop touch is showing that its loading I image but nothing is happening. I've reinstalled programming but it doesn't help. Any solution how to fix it or get refund for program?
    Robert

    You can edit RAW files in PS Touch but with one caveat: They must be uploaded to Creative Cloud first and then imported into your PS Touch project that way. Also, it's just basic import; there aren't any adjustments like in, say, Camera Raw.

  • RAW/JPG - Aperture doesn't find the JPG files anymore

    Hello,
    I have all my photos on an external hard drive (referenced). Yesterday I had to format this hard drive, so I copied all photos on the hard disk of my iMac, then formatted the external hard drive and then copied all the photos back there. The hard disk still has the same name, but Aperture didn't find my photos anymore. So I selected all photos in Aperture and choose the option to reconnect the images (sorry, don't know exactely how this option is called in English, because I'm using the german version). After some time my photos were all reconnected. But some of the photos, which are RAW/JPG (RAW Master), do find the RAW now, but I can't switch to the JPG. But this did not happen to all RAW/JPG...
    So I tried to move some of these photos from my external hard drive to the Aperture library (again I don't know how this is called in English). Aperture moved the RAW files into the library, but not the JPG and I also got an error "null".
    So my question is, how can I reconnect the JPGs? Hope you guys understand my problem
    And before someone ask, sadly I didn't thought of moving all photos into the library instead of just copying them myself so I can format the external hard drive.

    Which camera are the Raw files from?

    Unfortunately, NONE of my friends use Windows anymore , even at work we use Linux for security reasons. So what am i supposed to do now... They have a link at Creative that makes you belei've that they support Linux and offer you the possibility to choose the operating system, in other words=Linux. When i told in a mail to Creative Norway that they offer Linux support at their download-site, they actualy had the nerve to tell me that they don't do that!! I told them to remove the choice if they don't offer it, and don't try to tell people that they are eighter blind or stupid, and i pasted the Link + added a Screenshot of the page into the mail!! I realy got upset. It is the last time i by something from Creative. My first player from Creative lasted exactly 2 weeks, after that he stopped working for one odd reason, so i paid a little more in order to get a better one in exchange, and that device didn't li've longer than month eighter?
    Not exactly QUALITY we are talking about..aren't we?
    What to do, what to do?
    Anyone has a clue?

  • Autofill file doesn't allow editing or deleting

    In Safari on my iMac 5 autofill doesn't allow removal of any user names or passwords. Safari has problems and I think this file is corrupt.
    Can the file be deleted so it can be created again through Safari?

    Passwords are stored in Keychain Access   /Applications/Utilities
    And from the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences - Auofill
    Click the Edit button to the right of: User names and passwords
    Make selections(s) then click Remove.
    If you still can't remove user names and passwords from the Autofill pane, try troubleshooting the Safari. plist file.  (preferences)
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
    Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
    ~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
    If that didn't help, quit Safari. Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db (or ApplicationCache.db) file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.

    Adobe Reader doesn't open .pdf files anymore. It's written Error: 213:11. Details: laptop with Windows XP, Adobe Reader X

    Is there anything else beside the number 213:11?

  • How do you edit system plist files manually?

    I'm trying to edit a .plist file in the system/library/launchdaemons folder but can't figure out how to get permissions to work.  I have Xcode but when I try to edit it says "you don't own parent folder, can't unlock".  I tried changing ownership of the .plist file itself (just temporarily) and still same error.  The permissions on the file are like all system files; owner-system-w/r, group-wheel-read, and everyone-read.  So, what's the trick?  And please don't say I shouldn't mess with system files...if I brick the computer I promise not to ask for your help.  Thanks.

    Hi Niel,
    Can't you edit system files as root?

  • Help with editing a plist file

    Hello,
    I'm new to scripting and would appreciate any help I can get.
    I need to create a shell script that will modify one part of an AD plugin plist file in 10.7.  The plist file contains, among other things, this part which is supposed to contain GUID's for AD security groups:
         <dict>
                   <key>ActiveDirectory</key>
                   <dict>
                          <key>network admin groups</key>
                          <array/>
                   </dict>
    I need the file to be modified to contain this, instead:
         <dict>
                <key>ActiveDirectory</key>
                <dict>
                        <key>network admin groups</key>
                        <array>
                                 <string>exampleGUID-1</string>
                                 <string>exampleGUID-2</string>
                        </array>
                 </dict>
    I need to modify it through a shell script or unix command so that it can be automated and run on many machines, without modifying the rest of the file that contains other data unique to each machine.
    Here's what I've been playing around with... it will remove the existing entry, and create a string with value "test" properly, but I am stuck on how to create an array containing multiple strings.
    #!/bin/bash
    #Deletes the existing network admin groups entry
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups'" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist
    #Adds entry and sets string to "test"
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups' string test" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist
    Anybody have suggestions for how this could be done?  I'm sure this is simple for somebody out there
    Thanks!

    Awesome- Thanks for your help... I knew I was just missing something small.
    I got it working using the following:
    #!/bin/bash
    #Deletes the existing entry
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Delete :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups'" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist
    #Adds array element
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups' array" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist
    #Adds 1st entry and sets string
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups':0 string test" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist
    #Adds 2nd entry and sets string
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add :ActiveDirectory:'network admin groups':1 string test two" /path/to/file/ourdomain.plist

  • After installing Mountain Lion, TextEdit doesn't work anymore.

    Before, I used OS 10.6.8, but tonight after updating the new system Moutain Lion, TextEdit doesn't work any more.
    TextEdit is something I use offen, I need a solution.

    Image Capture is one of the applications that comes with the OS and there doesn't appear to be a separate download for it. You would have to reinstall the OS to get in back if it isn't there.
    Depending on the printer you have, you may have an option to scan from System Preferences/Print & Scan.
    try deleting the .plist - com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    .  Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
    If the application is the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
    If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
    You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

    textedit doesn't open files. I think I have an old version, version 1.1. How do I update it?

    What OS are you on?
    Are you certain it is not compatible with this OS?
    Is there an error message presented?
    What type of file are you trying to open?
    TextEdit is a built in app, shipped with the OS, it can't be downloaded from the store, have you copied TextEdit from a backup or is it trying to run from a backup disk or other copy of the OS - Spotlight can sometimes find & try to run other versions. Eject any backup disks & retry.
    Try opening directly from /Applications (the Finders 'Go menu > Applications' will take you there).
    If you need to restore the App you will need to have it in a backup or use the OS installer.
