The audio input on the 2011 13-inch macbook pro doesn't work

Hi everyone,
I bought a 13-inch macbook pro in early 2011( the latest version). It says in the technical specs that it has a "Combined headphone/line in (supports digital output)" and the guy working at  Apple store told me i could plug an electric guitar  right into the computer, trough a 1/4"-to 1/8" adapter. I tried it, it doesn't work, and the line-in channel doesn't appear in the sound preferences.
How can i make it work?
Thank you

Check System Preferences<Sound<Use Audio Port For.
I would recommend a MIDI to USB option if available though. Seems more reliable.

  • Hooking up my late 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro to an ultra tv (4k resolution) for use as a monitor?

Hey! I am interested in hooking up my late 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro to an ultra tv (4k resolution). My computer has native 1920x1080 but can I reach 4k using that tv as a monitor? I plan on using a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. Has anyone even tried this? I've heard rumors that the MacBook doesn't recognize that the tv has higher than 1920x1080 and so people use a hacked graphics card. It's all very confusing but if anyone has gotten this to work I'd be very interested in knowing how its done.

Any updates to this with latest Maveriks OSX upgrade 10.9?
I have an Active TB/HDMI adapter that coworker said he got to work with 4K Monitor at 3840.
Still trying to get a hold of him to validate his MBP model, but think it is the same as mine, Late 2011 MBP
All I am getting is 1920x1080 in options lisy with 10.9.2.

  • How much of a speed increase does a ssd give to a 2011 15 inch macbook pro

I am in the market for the new top end 15 inch macbook pro, I was wondering how much of a speed increase would I see overall. I would like to play world of warcraft, will I see a performance boost from a ssd? Thanks.

JoeyR is correct, the performance of a SSD drive is only on reads and writes
If you constantly exceed your RAM allocation, the pagination of excess memory needs to storage will be faster as well.
However a 7,200 RPM boot drive is pretty fast as well, at a lot lower $$ per GB than SSD and in a lot larger storage options.
7,200 RPM drives tend to use a bit more battery life than 5,400 RPM or SSD drives, if your on power most of the time then it's really not a issue.
Due to their limited writes, SSD drives are NOT being throughly erased using software designed for such purposes like on hard drives (Disk Utility), so any confidential information, sites visited, images and so forth can be recovered off of SSD drives.

  • Using an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro to watch a rented dvd. the screen displayed a skipping over damaged section message, then the dvd froze. first unable to eject the dvd, now it can't be inserted. Hardware prblm? reset the superdrive?

I was viewing a rented dvd when a "skipping damaged area" message was shown and then the dvd froze. At first I was unable to eject the dvd with the eject botton though the superdrive made "ejecting" noises, and followed the cue "finder using dvd" and ejected it. Now the drive will not accept any dvds. Does this sound like a hardaware problem, or is it possible that some sort of "reset" needs to take place?

Before wasting your time heading to your local Apple Store, try resetting your SMC.  It doesn't work all the time, but sometimes it's just the thing to save you time.

  • What is the best method for moving to a new Retina MacBook Pro from an Early 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant?

I'd like to transfer all data to the new MacBook as seamless as possible. Don't want to reinstall software. Using Migration Assistant in past was successful, but I always used Firewire or Ethernet.
Apple's Thunderbolt cable is too expensive at $49. Wifi is way too slow. (Transfering my 500GBs was going to take over 100 hours.) Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable? That's about the same price as the Thunderbolt cable. Is transfer over USB 2 possible? Would I be better off restoring from my Carbon Copy Clone on my USB 2 external drive?
I do not use Time Machine.

Stephen Coles wrote:... Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable?
That's what I used, although I already had the ethernet cable. Just directly connected both machines (after turning off Airport on the old one), no router or anything else, and ran Migration Assistant on both ends. Transfered a user account with about 30Gb data, nothing else.

  • What is the battery expectancy for late 2009 13-inch macbook pro

I have a 13-inch, Mid 2009 Macbook pro and it seems that the battery has been draining quite fast.  It was ast 85% charge about 30 minutes ago and now it's down to 24%.  Is this typical for "normal wear" usage? or could this be a battery issue?

Yes and No. It all depends on many factors.
Age of battery, yours is 3+ (going on 4) years old.
Use of battery, how many cycles does it have.
Usage habbits, whether you are in the habbit of draining the battery down to the point the system almost shuts off or does shut off, neither is good for the battery. Leaving it connected to the AC all the time. There is a system included to drain the battery and recharge it. But it doesn't do it enough or starts the recharge at to high a percentage creating a long term Short Cycle condition.
All batteries only last so long. 3+ years isn't bad and yours still works although it does lose it charge more rapidly, which is to be expected with age and use.
Even if you never really used it and it sat on a shelf eventually that battery would be no good. Li-ion batteries have a shelf life. Used or not used it will eventually fail to work.

  • HT4904 The link for mid 2010 15/17 inch macbook pro is broken

mid 2010 15 inch leads to the early 2010 efi....is there another for mid 2010?

    Hey,
    Perhaps this is relevant ..........
    (1) I have a very late 17" macbook Pro.  (It is actually the somewhat rare 2.5 quad model.)  One of the very last ones made.
    (2) It comes with 1333 ram
    (3) I swapped in 1600 ram
    (4) IT IS ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN, THAT, THE MACHINE RUNS MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH FASTER when you have 1600 speed ram.
(Indeed, it runs 1600 / 1333 = 1.20x faster on all memory operations - it's just that simple and obvious.)
I did many tests back-and-fore swapping the slow and fast ram, and it is very, very obvious, the speed difference.  Most operations on computers are just memory bound - everything from startup to rendering and the like is quicker - obviously and clearly quicker - with faster ram.
    (5) I have had utterly no problems running the faster ram. It reports and runs the ram utterly normally, no problem.
    (6) These machines cost thousands, and ram cost a few dollars - there seems very little reason you wouldn't do this.
    (7) I do have one of the very last 17" mbp.  (It was "old new stock" - I bought it unused in March 2013.)  So, it's possible that OLDER 17" mbp will not run 1600 speed RAM.  But, I mean it costs like $100 to try, on a fantastic machine worth $1000s, so it's a huge win at low cost if it works.
I hope this helps future readers!!!  Cheers

  • Early 2011 15-inch MacBook pro running a tad bit slow

Had it for a while now and he's been treating me well, but all of a sudden the performance has started going a little wonky. Sometimes when I'm working, it'll just go black-screen (and stop playing music if I was playing any before) and then the login screen will show up, or it'll go to full on sleep where sometimes it'll respond if I press Enter a couple of times, but other times i'll have to close the clamshell and reopen it to be taken back to the login screen.  Also, I get the rainbow pinwheel more often than I used to, for longer than I used to,  for simple tasks like using Safari or opening Word or trying to access a menu or quit an app.  Some apps will take a considerable time to open, and the icon just keeps a-bouncing in the dock until 20 years later when the app eventually opens.  I've taken him into the Apple store and had them reset the SMC as that seemed to be the main problem all signs were pointing to.  But the symptoms still remain, so I'm hoping I can find some help here from you all. I'm a broke college kid, so I'm not trying to drop huge bucks, but any little bit of info is greatly appreciated.

That's a hardware kernel panic for certain and it does look as if it was caused by a faulty GPU.
The only thing that I can really recommend is printing out the kernel panic and taking it and your machine into your local Apple Store/AASP. They can diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repair (unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan - in which case the repair should be free).

  • HELP, the display of my macbook pro doesn't work.

The whole thing is like this. someday i just turned it on normally after i turned it off 2 days ago. and the thing happened.
i can hear the noisy form hard driver, SuperDrive , the startup tone and even after a while ,i could hear the "bo bo" when u press the sound-adjust key,F3 n F4. the keyboard worked fine but not the display.
it kept in black. not like the black screen in windows, it seemed like the display did not connect any power. meanwhile, the sleep light was on, in grey. so the whole thing is like the display system is in a sleep model but the other parts of the laptop are awake.
so i ve search some resolutions for similar problem. such like sleepimage , PRAM .but none of them is effective.
and i notes a new detail which could be different. when i rotate the lip, in some angle the sleep light would go bright white ,but in a right angle as it is when we work on it ,the sleep light get grey. if u keep on, almost 120,the max angle. it turned to be bright white again. and when i close the lip, originally, the light should be up and down like breathing. but now it keep solid bright-whitely, and the fans and hard disk sound like keep working .
it has been expired, so the apple care would be so expensive to solve some simple question.
does anyone know what happen to my Macbook pro? so that i could choice if i should send it to Applecare or not.
    Thanx a lot

This morning I experienced exactly the same. So I immediately went to a Apple Premium Reseller this afternoon and handed over the MacBook. They told me this was their first case ever of this kind.
Anyway, it needs to be repaired, but before this they are going to run a test or two in order to get a precise indication. They also checked with the pram while I was in the shop. It might be the latest issue with the nvidia which concerns all the MacBook Pro's produced during spring 2007 until autumn 2007.
Lastly, I will give a call to Apple on Monday to discuss this matter because the Macbook is now fifteen months old. This Ferrari or Porsche of all Macs shouldn't behave like this.
By the way, I replaced my battery after 479 cycles last Wednesday for € 135. Still I don't think this has anything to do with this issue.
    I keep you posted,
    Mehdi

  • My optical drive in my Early 2011 MacBook Pro doesn't work...

Hi, my optical drive stopped working on me...  I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro and do you guys have  fix for this?

    Greetings TheSnapDude,
It appears your optical drive is not responding. Based on the information you have provided, your MacBook Pro's optical drive may need to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.
Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
There is an additional method which allows you to use another computer's optical drive. Take a look at this link which will help you learn how to share drives and check if your computers meet the requirements:

  • My 2011 i7 15" Macbook pro will not work with hardware virtualization

I have a Mac Book Pro with an Intel i7 2.66 MHz chip and it will not support Hardware Virtualization. When I try to create a Virtual Machine in VMware Fusion it fails with the error that my MBP does not support "Hardware Virtualization".

    clivefromcape town,
replacing a hard drive is one of the easier “surgeries” to do in a MacBook Pro; it really isn’t difficult.
Regarding my opinion on HDD vs. SSD, I have a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and I did a SSD “transplant” on it this past autumn. I’d chosen the 512 GB Samsung 840 PRO SSD; a major selling point for me was its five-year warranty, which I’d interpreted as being representative of Samsung’s best estimate of product return rates. Other people here have good things to say about the Crucial SSDs; I’ve never had one, so I can’t comment on them. My MacBook Pro certainly boots up faster and loads programs faster because of the SSD, but a SSD will not make programs run faster unless a program’s performance bottleneck is with disk access; most programs will not have such a bottleneck. Your recent RAM increase will probably help more with program run speed than a SSD would. That being said, I neither watch movies nor listen to music on my MacBook Pro; perhaps a SSD would help with movie playback, since that might be an example of a disk-bound program.

  • Late 2011 17 Inch MacBook Pro Not Booting, Three Beeps When I hold "C"

my late 2011 mbp 17 inch will not boot. In safe mode with verbose it stops at the point looking for my hard drive.  Disk utility in single user mode  said the SSD has "keys out of order" and could not verify disk etc.
However when I hold "c" aka trying to boot off my optical drive with Snow Leopard in it...it beeps three times, which after searching everyone seems convinced it's memory but I took out my upgraded memory that was in it and put the factory 4gig (2x2gb) sticks back in and it's the same exact thing...three beeps when holding "c".
If I hold nothing my computer shows the apple logo, the spining boot up activity icon, AND a progress bar at the bottom that get's about 1/6th of the way doing whatever it's doing and then it instantly shuts down.
Any other ideas besides the idea that my logic board that is 1 year old randomly stopped working? It's just weird that my 9 month old SSD is not being recognized while at the same time, holding "C" to try and call my optical drive to boot I get three beeps.

Three beeps means a RAM problem - bad RAM.

has anyone had the same problem? please help me!

Look in the Menu bar once you click the icon. Is Word in the menu bar? If it is click File then New Blank Document.
In the Dock it there a little white DOT next to the Word icon?
If you had it open before and then closed the window you were working in the program didn't close, that is normal on Mac. So when you go to try and start it again it is already open but without a window being on screen.
