The file IMAGE.JPG could not be found because the volume on which it resides is currently offline.

After restoring from Time Machine onto a new Mac, all images in Aperture are now just outlined. Aperture can't find the volume of the master images because that was the volume of my old Mac. Is there any way to tell Aperture to reconnect with the master images in the new volume? I've tried everything I could think of, with the Alt+Cmd upon opening Aperture and the trying all of the repair and rebuild choices, but nothing has worked.

Sorry to hear that this isn't working for you. In all my experience it has always behaved correctly.
Just to be certain the correct procedure is being followed
You select all the missing images in Aperture before running Locate Referenced Files
In the window that opens all the selected images are in the upper part of the window in red
You select one of these images then click in the lower half of the window
In the lower half of the window you locate the file that you've selected in the upper half of the window
the reconnect all button becomes active and you select it
But at this point only the file selected and those in the same folder get reconnected? The overall layout of the file system on the new disk is the same as the old disk?
In your secon post you mentioned needing to use the alt key to make the reconnect buttons active. Is this still the case or do they become active when you go through the above steps?

  • Photos downloaded from SD card unaccessible "because the volume on which it resides is currently offline"

This has happened multiple times such that I can't share any photos except those I uploaded to Aperture from my iPhone. All of my cameras use SD cards. They show up in Aperture and I download them to a new project. The project appears, goes through the download process. Aperture then asks me if I want to delete the files and I do (yes, multiple times I have done this, foolishly not recalling that 2 months prior this happened).
The files appear and can be rotated but not otherwise edited, not shared, not located, not exported. There are no files on the SD cards. The files however have great resolution on my screen - it's clear they are not just thumbnails.
    Please help! This really *****.

thanks for this Léonie. at least i'll get the previews. it points to the SD card. unfortunately aperture deleted all of the files on the SD card ... so i'm not sure what it's pointing at.
assuming those files are irretrievable (you'll be a hero to me if they aren't [??]),
You only let Aperture delete the files from the card and did not reformat the card in the camera, right?
Then put the card into a card reader and use a media recovery program to look for image files on the card. I am not sure, if Disk Drill will work for SD cards, but usually it is quite good at retrieving image files.

  • HELP!  "The file "DSC06830.JPG" could not be opened because it is empty."

I am getting this error when I try to drag and drop a photo to my desktop, or if I try to print. Need pics printed for my Grandpas funeral- please please help!

That's telling you the file is corrupt. Can you view it at full size?

  • "File could not be found because volume offline"

Just downloaded the latest update. Also recently upgraded to lion.  Now, when I click "show in finder", I receive error: " The file [name of filed] could not be found because the volume on which it resides is currently offline." These files are stored on my mac hard drive.  Looking for any solutions or causes of this problem, as I suspect this is either a Lion bug or bug with the Aperture update.  Thanks.
I should add that these are referrenced files.

Do you mean, when you click an image in the browser in Aperture and select "Show in Finder"? Are your master files referenced?
How did you upgrade to Lion? Did you make a clean install and restored your Aperture Library from a backup? Then that may have caused the references to you your master tobe broken.
You need to reconnect the master image files by selecting the  versions in the browser and then selecting from the Aperture File menu:   File -> Locate Referenced File.

  • The photo "Image.jpg" could not be opened.

Every time I launch iPhoto, I get this annoying error message: The photo “Image.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
I think I know what it means, that there is possibly a broken link between a photo and a pointer to that photo in the library? But I don't know how to go about fixing it. Any suggestions?
    iPhoto '11
    MacBook Pro (mid-2009)

    Thanks.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • The photo "IMG_5310.JPG" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

Each time I open iPhoto or plug in a device and iPhoto automatically opens, the following message appears five times, looking for photos I assume I deleted, perhaps the wrong way.
The photo “IMG_5310.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
I've searched the computer for the images, but they seem to be permanently deleted.  How do I "reset" iPhoto from looking for these photos and remove this "Alert"?
    Sincerely,
    Mark T

mark, you are asking about iPhoto on your Mac, right? This is the iPhoto on IOS devices forum - iPads, iPhones, etc. Next time please post your question in the iLIfe iPhoto forum; you will get more help there.
But to your question. This error message usually occurs, when original image files are missing from your iPhoto library. iPhoto keeps the original images and the edited versions, and when the originals are removed from the iPhoto Library by deleting them from the Finder, then the photos can no longer be edited, exported, printed.
Does iPhoot open correctly, after the alert appears? Can you work with it, after the alert finishes? Then delete the corresponding edited versions of the missing originals from your iPhoto library. The versions probably will be marked by an exclamation point, when you browse your photos.
To prevent this from happening again, open the iPhoto "Preferences" > "Advaced" panel and make sure the option "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto LIbrary" is enabled. Otherwise original files may be stored outside your iPhoto library and you can accidentally delete them and loose valuable photos.

  • "The photo "EGY_7895.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found"

I'm getting the following message when I click on any photo in my most recent import: "The photo “xxx.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found". The thumbnails are in iphoto but it dosen't seems to reconize the files when I try to go in to edit. I have iphoto version 8.1.2. Help please.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
It sounds like this batch of photos were imported as Referenced.

  • HT5129 The photo "claire-66.jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.

because of the mobile me switch i can not use my iphoto. i had some albums in my mobile me web gallery and one of them i had deleted the original files so it will not allow me to use my iphoto because it keeps giving me this error message and i can't get rid of it.
"The photo “claire-66.jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
I don't have the original photo anymore so i can not link it to it.

So, your iPhoto Library is now corrupted.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

No changes were made. I saw in one of the threads where someone said to repair the database(which didn't work) or Rebuild the database(which did work). Thanks to one all for the support.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iBooksX
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

You may have to research any newer possibilities in trouble-
shooting or resolving issues by use of iPhoto Support page.
Since I don't use iPhoto as a primary editor or storage, the

  • The file aqq12s0m.sys could not be found during Win XP installation

When I try to reinstall XP pro I receive message "The file aqq12s0m.sys could not be found. press any key to continue." and when I press it, comp restarts.
    Any clue about that file?

    Hi,
is this the original recovery CD or a genuine Windows XP installation disk??
    Following reasons for that problem:
    - Disc is damaged or scratched or warped or simply not working
    - CD/DVD drive has some problem
    - Some piece of hardware does not work properly
    - Memory could be faulty
Try to exclude these points and you will get the answer on that file.
Usually, such problem appears (I mean with a non-working file) when the CD is scratched or the drive does not work like it should..
    Cheers

how did you do these delations? in the iPhoto window or using the finder
do you have a referenced library ( (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended. ) or a managed library (that option is in its default checked state)

  • Selected file system item could not be found

I have an issue with a volume that seems unrelated to the other post to which I replied here. This particular volume is an extra slice/partition on the primary software RAID drive (simply made up of two internal drives).
When I select the Volume from the Volumes tab/list in Server Admin I receive an exclamation mark at the bottom with the error: "The Selected file system item could not be found"
Each time that I try to press the Share button and actually set the properties for it and Save and then refresh the shares, that volume is never shared. Seems like an odd issue as there do not appear to be any problems with the volume otherwise.

I am getting the same error message, but only on my Xserve RAID volume. I'm able to adjust permissions on anything else. I currently do not have the option of reformatting the RAID volume right now.
What my initial assumption is that this RAID used some complicated permissions and was connected to a OS X 10.4 Server. I did not do an upgrade to the server but a full format and reinstall of OS X 10.5 Server. My workaround to date has been to change he permissions in the Finder but that's a real pain.
I've tried renaming the volume and a few other tricks.
I'm not sure what to do next to get the OS X 10.5 Server Admin to work with the permissions on my RAID.

first, you just asked me to use MS file Explorer to see what the properties were.,..and to ask what happened. Yes - that's on my hard drive. The problem I have is opening word files in a DB that is web enabled.....I've used Firefox browser for that, and everything else , for years...... When I look at the Tools, and options on FireFox., as your support page noted.....NOTHING is listed in the Applications tab....hence my note asking for help. The file I need to open is a Word file out on a web enabled DB. It's not on my hard drive - I have to problems opening docs there - but for that, I don't use Firefox
