The file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read (error)
I installed the new iTunes 9, and I received an error saying that iTunes could not be opened because there was an error with Quicktime. I followed Apple instructions and re-downloaded Quicktime, to no avail. So I removed iTunes and Quicktime, downloaded a iTunes 8, and now I have an error that says:
"the file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."
What do I do?

I read this by "Noir" it made the most sense, but the question is I went to the link he gave for installing Quick Time (the download that does not say Itunes) and still I cannot seem to get the Itunes opening up. He says that Quick Times has to have Apple Application Support. How does one get that? Alsohe said that different version of itunes requires different version of Quick Time. How does one know what version we have? Besides when I downloaded the Quick Time (without the Itunes version) its still did not down load anything called Apple Application Support. How does one download that?
Below is the email I am talking about:
So, under normal circumstances, *_if you uninstall your QuickTime for Windows your iTunes for Windows will no longer launch*_. The exception is if you install a different application such as QuickTime Alternaltive, which also provides QuickTime playback capabilities. However, most such applications (QuickTime Alternative being a good example) are themselves built from actual QuickTime program files. _So there's really no getting away from the requirement to have QuickTime for Windows componentry installed on your computer in order to get your iTunes for Windows to launch and run
._In addition to needing some QuickTime for Windows installed on the computer for iTunes for Windows, a given iTunes for Windows version will require at mininum a particular version of QuickTime for Windows to be installed on the computer in order for that iTunes for Windows version to run. For example, iTunes for Windows 5.0.0.35 requires at least a release version of QuickTime for Windows 7.0.2 to run correctly, iTunes for Windows 6.0.0.18 requires at least a QuickTime for Windows 7.0.3, and so on. The same applies for solutions involving other programs like QuickTime Alternative. An iTunes for Windows 6.0.0.18 would require an installed version of QuickTime Alternative to made from (at least) QuickTime for Windows 7.0.3 componentry in order for iTunes to run.
The most straightforward way to go about getting your iTunes for Windows launching again after you've uninstalled your QuickTime for Windows is simply to reinstall QuickTime for Windows. You can get the latest version of QuickTime for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 from the following download page at the Apple website. (Use the download link that doesn't mention iTunes.)
Latest QuickTime for Windows version
The relationship between iTunes and Apple Application Support
iTunes for Windows uses a number of the same program files as other Apple software for Windows (most notably, QuickTime for Windows and Safari for Windows). Starting with iTunes for Windows version 9.0.0, QuickTime for Windows version 7.6.4, and Safari for Windows 4.0.4, program files common to more than one of the programs have been stored in a single location: "Apple Application Support".
So, if you uninstall your Apple Application Support (using the Add or Remove programs control panel in Windows XP, or using Programs and Features in Windows Vista or Windows 7), your iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) will no longer launch ... because several essential program files for iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) will have been uninstalled.
At the time of writing this user tip, Apple Application Support is not available as a "standalone" download from Apple. It is only available as part of the installer bundles for the most recent versions of iTunes for Windows, Safari for Windows and QuickTime for Windows. So if you have uninstalled your Apple Application Support and your iTunes for Windows 9.0.0 (or higher version) is no longer launching, the most straightforward way of getting your iTunes for Windows launching again is to uninstall your existing version of iTunes for Windows and reinstall the latest version of iTunes for Windows. (The iTunes reinstall should also reinstall your Apple Application Support.)
Latest iTunes for Windows version
If, however, you've uninstalled both your Apple Application Support and your QuickTime for Windows, the most straightforward way of getting them both reinstalled is to download the latest QuickTime for Windows installer from the Apple website. (Use the download link that doesn't mention iTunes.)

Can anyone help me with this problem. I tried updating the latest itunes and it caused an error MSVCR80.dll missing. I then tried fixing it after reading other people had the same problem and a solution was given about uninstaling itunes and the order in which to do that. I did that but now get the error "the files "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of itunes. I see a solution has been given about this but I cannot find what is suggested to enable me to follow instructions. Can anyone please go through step by step (letting me know where I can find what is needed) to enable me to be able tio log into itues again. Thanks
Hi pussygalore,
If you are having issues with iTunes after an attempted update, you may find the following article helpful:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
You may want to make sure that in the last step (reinstalling iTunes) that you are installing the latest/newest available version, and not attempting a reinstall from an older file.

I just installed iTunes on my new laptop. When I click on the desktop icon I receive a pop up that says "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes". I have no idea what this means or what to do about it. I can't even find a file on my computer like the one referred to in the pop up. I am currently considering keeping my old laptop if it is the only way for me to continue to access iTunes. What should I do to fix this?
What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future. -
I receive the message: The file "iTunes library.itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I do not know exactly what this means. I have Windows 7 on my computer and was able access itunes until just recently. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes multiple times and that does not work. Sometimes I can get in when immediately after installing, but then if I close it, i cannot get back in. Now, i can't get in at all.
That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

For your reference I’m using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8. Several weeks ago on a Monday I received an upgrade for iTunes. When Tuesday arrived I attempted to log in so that I could download the latest freebie song(s). I was met w/this message: “The file ‘iTunes Library.itl’ cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
The music/video files are still on my Mac (I’ve verified that via Searchlight), but I’m unable to open the program. Since I know that 10.5.8 is rapidly becoming prehistoric, could it be that the newest iTunes isn’t compatible w/this particular OS? I’d like to switch up, but understand that the newest OS won’t work on a Mac of this vintage (6 years old). In addition, my Adobe products (all CS2) won’t work w/anything newer than 10.5.8, so I’m reluctant to go to a newer OS (I just can’t afford the Adobe upgrade $$$ @ this point).
Is there any way to get a download of an “old” iTunes version? If there were, I’d simply refuse any future upgrades until my personal economy allows me to stop working as if it were 2006. Please advise, somebody!I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes. You make it sound like it was sent to you. At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it. However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible. iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer. So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message. One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version. Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers. The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

I am unable to open my iTunes on my Toshiba laptop. I keep getting an error message of "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. I don't have the problem on my iPhone though.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank youUnless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

Itunes was working fine until i plugged in my 6th gen shuffle. itunes wouldn't read the pod and it kept showing an error message telling me i needed to uninstall and reinstall itunes. So i did. Now, itunes won't open up. i keep getting the same message, " The file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. HELP!!!
Problem solved by doing the following:
Open PC/Mac and search for iTunes Library.
From the list, select the most recent version of iTunes Library. Save this to a folder.
Delete iTunes from your computer.
Install latest version of iTunes.
When I opened the new version of iTunes, everything was there as before.
I didn't need to import the saved version of iTunes Library. Maybe this happens automatically????? -
I cannot open iTunes. I get a message that says "The file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?"
I downloaded it and it and I continue to get the same message.
How do I fix this? Thanks, DeeUpgrade iTunes to the latest version. It should be 10.5.3.

"The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Updates were only offered by Apple when I'd open iTunes. Now I can't open iTunes. How can I access the newest iTunes as an update, not a new program?
this just started w/ me yesterday. I was running 10.5.3, and nothing changed - the message just appeard out of nowhere. I update to the latest iTunes 10.6 but the message is the same.
Sounds like probably some sort of Library file corruption.
The two options available in the message box are "Download" and "Quit". Download is useless because I'm already running the latest. Quit is pretty useless.
I was going to just create a new Library and re-import all my music. Of course, all my iPhone sync settings are going go have to be recreated. -
Downloaded the newest version of itunes and now I can't access any of my library. It says The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Anybody know what to do?????
I got that Exact message... I think I updated my version of iTunes and it worked correctly.
Hope this helps... -

I accidentally uninstalled Quicktime from my computer so my Itunes was not functioning. It told me to uninstall my Itunes, then reinstall it. Which I did.
Trouble is, now it comes up with 'THE FILE "ITUNES LIBRARY.ITL" CANNOT BE READ BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY A NEWER VERSION OF ITUNES'...which I believe is because before I uninstalled my original Itunes, I had not completed the recent update to the newest version of Itunes, whereas the one I just installed is the latest one.
So THEN, I download the previous version of Itunes (iTunes 10.2.1(x64)) but when I try and run it, it comes up with the message that the thing '...IS NOT VALID WIN32 APPLICATION'.
Now I'm stuck and have absolutely no idea what to do. Please help! When iTunes updates, it should create a backup of your library file before updating.
You may be able to get back by using this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
When doing this, drag BOTH iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to the desktop. You will need the xml file if the method above doesn't work.
In that case try this:
