The Folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created - ERROR!

I have been using iTunes for about five months and have loaded about 5500 songs onto it from my CDs. I've been on it A LOT! All of a sudden, it won't open and gives me this message:
The Folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder.
I've reinstalled the software three times, the last time even putting it on the external hard drive I'm using to store my tunes (my hard drive on my computer doesn't have room for the 25GB of songs I have so far). No luck. PLEASE help! I have lots more songs to upload before I leave the country in a few months!!!!
Thanks,
matt

hiya!
the best place to start with that error message is this document:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes
... but if you end up running into the complication where no "My Music" folder shows up in TweakUI, then we've had some success using the alternate technique in the following Nigel Carpenter post:

  • ITunes won't open -error: The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created...

    Hello,
I am not able to open my iTunes. I was able to use it yesterday. I keep getting the message:
*The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder.*
I have created a folder called "iTunes" in my "My Music" folder, which does not fix the problem.
I have uninstalled and installed iTunes twice.
I have used the repair option when trying to install iTunes over the top of my current iTunes.
None of these options has fixed the problem.
If anyone knows how to fix this, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Rachel

I found the answer on another board... Below are the parts I found useful (quoted).
    Click on Start
    Clin on Run
    Type in "regedit" Enter
Do this step twice as there are two locations. +(I actually had 4 locations.)+
    CTRL F
    Type in "My Music"
Double Click and enter the path for where the folder is located.
    Then exit.
The exact locations of the 2 entries that I changed are
hkeycurrentuser - software - microsoft - windows - current version - explorer - shell folders
    and
as above - windows - current version - explorer - USER shell folders
I located the location of my iTunes folder (something like this - C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\My Documents\My Music\iTunes.
I copied it, and when I found the regedit location referred to, doubleclicked the location and pasted the path in there.

  • The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required.

    Hello,
I cannot start iTunes. When I do, I get the following error message:
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. the default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder.
I have reviewed and gone through the recommendations for this problem, including downloading the WindowsPowerToys Tweak UI. The problem is that the Tweak UI does not know that there is a My Music special folder, so Tweak UI was of no use.
Can someone tell me what I need to do to make my Dell (Dell doesn't know either) understand that I have "My Music" folder on my computer....so it can be seen in my Tweak UI application.
    Thank you.
    Tim

    I have followed these instructions:
If the My Music folder is in the wrong location or incorrectly assigned in the Windows registry, you may see one of the following error messages:
    * "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."
    * "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the Music folder."
If you see one of the above errors, follow these steps to troubleshoot this:
    1. Verify the location of your Windows XP My Music folder. The default location for this folder is
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music
If you do not have this folder at the default location and have not moved it to another location, consider creating one inside your My Documents folder.
    2. Download and install Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Note: This utility is for Windows XP only. Please review the system requirements before installing.
    3. Once you have installed Tweak UI, open it from the Start menu.
    4. In the column on the left, click on the plus symbol next to My Computer and select Special Folders.
    5. In the right pane on the Folderlist, click My Music.
    * This is where I run into the problem. My Music does not show up in the *
    * right pane pull down set of options. *
    6. Click the Change Location button. You may see a warning message appear with precautions for changing this setting; after reviewing the message, click Yes.
    7. In the resulting window, browse for the My Music folder as described in step 1, and click OK.
    8. Reinstall or open iTunes.

  • ITunes will not open - the folder itunes cannot be found or created

I'm having troubles opening up itunes. Every time i click on the icon I get the following message
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My music folder.
I had itunes on my hard drive but it got too full and had to transfer the library to an external hard drive. This worked for a while but suddenly stopped working with the above message. iTunes is still in my program files and all the files are still there on the external hard drive but the program wont open.
Can I change the options somehow??

    hi y'all!
The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My music folder.
the first place to start with this error message is this KB doc:

  • Error: "The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, ..."

The full error message I am receiving is:
"The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder."
I cannot access iTunes at all. I have removed it from my computer and downloaded it several times and that has not helped. I am running on Windows XP platform.
Ideas of how to fix this??
    THANKS!

I will try that when I get home. Part of the problem could be that after I installed iTunes and loaded most of my music onto my computer, my hard disk space ran out. I bought an external hard drive and transferred everything to that. iTunes still worked. I downloaded an updated version of iTunes and that is when I started receiving this message. I will try the TweakUI. If you have any more thoughts, let me know.
    THANKS!

  • Error message The folder Itunes cannot be found or created and is required"

Help please. I get the message "The folder Itunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the My Music folder". As a result, I cannot get Itunes to load. Have uninstalled and reloaded, repaired etc, all not working as still end up getting same message. Have also made an ITunes folder in My music, all to no avail. No viruses and virus library totally up to date. Getting to stage where I want to throw Ipod in bin and get an Iriver as its driving me insane!!

Here is a copy of the ilounge entries. I got one of my more IT literate guys to do this - but it looked easy when he did it!! important thing is it all came back - was a problem as I had moved an external hard drive so one of the locations detailed below showed the old address.
    Good luck!!
    Click on Start
    Clin on Run
    Type in "regedit" Enter
Do this step twice as there are two locations.
    CTRL F
    Type in "My Music"
Double Click and enter the path for where the folder is located.
The exact locations of the 2 entries that I changed are
hkeycurrentuser - software - microsoft - windows - current version - explorer - shell folders
    and
as above - windows - current version - explorer - USER shell folders
Try changing the two items from there - if these have already been changed then I'm not sure what to suggest.

  • ITunes open error: "The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, ..."

I have a laptop with iTunes installed. My IT guys have our LAN set up so that when I login on our LAN, all files in the "My Documents" folder are syncronized with a copy of those files on our server. When I'm connected to the LAN, iTunes starts and works just fine. I can download music, syncronize my iPod and all features work.
When I disconnect from the LAN and try to start iTunes I get the following error message:
"The folder “iTunes” cannot be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the “My Music” folder."
I had the same problem on a previous laptop and solved it by putting an alias of the iTunes music folder where iTunes was looking for it. Unfortunately, I cannot get the same method to work on my new laptop. I have put aliases of various folders in many different locations hoping to trick iTunes into finding my network alias without success.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions?
    Latitude D810   Windows XP

Yes. Step 3 is the key. Thanks...
jtoons: The problem is that iTunes expects the "My
Music" folder to be both available and writable.
That's where the actual library files are stored.
When that folder is not available, you can't run
    iTunes.
Since your My Documents folder is on the server, and
the default location for the My Music folder is
inside the My Documents folder, it won't work unless
    you can access the server.
The solution to this is to make a local My Music
folder and configure Windows to use that one instead.
    Here's how to do it:
    1. Download TweakUI from Microsoft.
    2. Create a new folder somewhere on your local
    computer. Call it My Music.
    3. IMPORTANT: Copy the contents (Not the folder
itself! Just the contents!) of the old My Music
folder in your My Documents folder into the new My
    Music folder.
    3. Using TweakUI, change the system's "My Music"
folder to be the new folder on your local drive.
Follow those instructions precisely and it'll work.
Skip step 3 and you make things annoyingly
    complicated.

  • The folder "itunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default

After I agree to the agreement screen, I receive a message "The folder "itunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this file is inside the "My Music" Folder". What is wrong? Any suggestions?

this has nothing to do with this topic, but oh well. sometimes some of my music/videos wont let me drap it and drop it into my ipod. it comes up with ! , and right now there are 200 songs on my computer that cant be listened to or put into my ipod. it says that the original files cannot be found. suggestions?

  • Error message .. "the folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created" - wtheck?

Ok, now this is really starting to get absurd. I'm thinking this iPod shuffle would be a nice Valentine's Day gift for my wife and this is becoming a real pain in the neck. I'm about ready to take this thing back, get refunded and go buy another mp3 player. Come on, Apple. Help me out here.
I DL'd the latest iTunes off the website, installed it in my machine, watched it go through all the splash screens, installing, etc. and followed the installer's invitation to start iTunes once it finished. Guess what? This is the error message I get
*The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created, and is required.*
*The default location for this folder is inside the "My Music" folder*
What the heck? I checked in the program files in my C drive and there iTunes is. I try to start up from there and get the same issue. I look inside the My Music folder on the drive and there's no folder. For the heck of it, I put one in there knowing good and well that's not going to do the job and of course, it doesn't. Any ideas?

Usually, that indicates that the My Music folder on the PC has lost some of its special registry permissions. But if this is the very first time you've ever installed iTunes on the PC, it's fairly straightforward to recover from the issue.
Hold down the shift key as you are launching iTunes. In the dialog box that comes up, click the "Create library" button. You should be good to go from there on out.

  • The folder "iTunes" cannot be found or created???

I am new at work and the person before me had their iTunes account on the computer that I now use. When I signed into my account, the other persons music showed up. We do not have the same taste in music so I read through many things on the internet to see how to get rid of the old and replace with my new music. I deleted the music folder and copied my home music folder on a thumbdrive and copied it onto the work computer. Now when I try to bring up my iTunes, I get the message:
"The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this is inside "My Music Folder"."
I have tried deleting iTunes and reinstalling and still the same message shows up. I have worked on this for too many hours on my own. I need some solid advice. HELP!! Thank you.

You are so AWESOME!!!THANK YOU!! Such a simple solution, yet no one had ever shared it with me and I spend hours trying to get this to load. I now have MY library!!! Yeah!!! You have made my day!! Thank you, Thank you!!!!

  • The folder itunes cannot be found or created - mac os x user

I am a die-hard OS X user and have been without my iTunes for over a month now. I continue to get "the folder itunes cannot be found or created." I've read the posts here and see that PC users have a utility that will work for them, but us OS X users are sort of left out in the cold.
Please help. I've deleted my iTunes folder and there is currently nothing in there. When I launch iTunes, I get the same message. When I create the folder it's looking for and try to launch iTunes it still give mes the same message. i'm stumped. Please help.

it might be best to repost over at the iTunes for Mac forums, C.
our techniques for dealing with that message involve adjusting special properties on folders in the registry ... and i don't know how that ends up translating into the Mac OS and UI.

  • Can't install itunes - error message  "the folder "itunes" cannot be found

Help. I just bought a new Iphone and can't get itunes to load. I had itunes on my computer for several years for my nano - haven't synced up in about a year. Went to open it and got the following error message
The folder "itunes" cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside Mu Music folder"
I have uninstalled everything - quicktime, apple mobile, every single file. I have rebooted, run searches to make sure there were no files at all left - did it through control panel, search etc., rebooted and downloaded it again (this make about 5 times now) and still get that same message that the folder cannot be found. Help! I just blew about $400 in the Apple store!
    Can anyone help me?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
