The Gimp in Mac os 10.4.11

Since upgrading to 10.4.11, the Gimp no longer works. When I try to open it, it says "caching fonts", and never moves on. I have tried installing to the newest version, but it didn't help. What is my problem?

Well, you guys, I'm a novice here- I don't even hardly understand the jargon used, let alone what the heck is going on.What I do resonate with is your discussion around 10.4.11. So was that a software update after I downloaded and installed Tiger? I really don't remember. What I know is that there are several
programs not working, like Safari. It always "closes unexpectedly" and won't open. Also, Firefox won't open-and it disappeared as well; nowhere to be seen. Quicktime, not working. Some 3rd party icons disappeared off my dock and I have put them back up using 'option' and dragging them from applications. I have been deleting files as Opera is my working browser and it freezes at will. Microsoft Office for Mac doesn't work, either. Maybe I should contact a tech to guide me through this mess as I have no confidence in my ability to follow directions and do it myself.

  • Is there any way to add sub-mailboxes to the Inbox in Mac Mail 4.5?

So, back when I was using Mail 3.0, I was able to create new mailboxes/folders within the INBOX of a specific account.  When I upgraded my machine, Mail changed to "Locations" with the generic locations "MAILBOXES", and "ON MY MAC", "REMINDERS" as well as locations for any account, say "IMAP" and "EXCHANGE".  Currently, I can add a new mailbox, but my only options are to add to "ON MY MAC" (and any subfolders within), "IMAP", and "EXCHANGE".  The option of adding mailboxes to anything under the "MAILBOX" tab is not an option.
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to add mailboxes to accounts and have it show up under the MAILBOXES location, rather than under the specific mail account location, as each mail account, ("IMAP", "EXCHANGE") also holds additional folders for Trash, Sent, Drafts, etc.  I have about two to three folders per account that I would like to keep stored on the server, and when Mail is handling multiple accounts, using the "locations" for each account takes up a surprising amount of space.
I know that there is a way to get sub-mailboxes for each account in the MAILBOXES location (as I currently have several in an IMAP account), but these were all carried over from Mail 3.0 and any additional mailboxes are delegated to the location "IMAP" rather than MAILBOXES/IMAP/sub-mailbox.
Basically, I'm wondering if I can create mailboxes like this: MAILBOXES/Account/Mailbox rather than ACCOUNT/mailbox
*I realize I asked the question several times, but hopefully the additional wording helps to solve the issue.

There is no way to add anything to the face of a photo in iPhoto at all You will need an extenral editror for that kind of work. You can add text and arrows etc with Preview, already on your Mac or with apps like these:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • OS X Tiger and The Gimp

I have installed the software The Gimp but when trying to open it, it asks for apple's X11, I found it on the Mac OS X Tiger install DVD and correctly installed apple's X11, but The Gimp goes on asking for Apple's X11. Does anybody know why ? Many thanks by advance, BF

I don't know if this is the reason but your Mac OS X (10.4.8) is an older version of Tiger than specified on http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html

  • Making the switch to Mac from pc

Hey gang, I've had enough of microsoft and windows. It seems like everytime I get and install a windows update, my system gets worse. At this point it's very unstable and always crashing/rebooting. That, and viruses and maintaining all the various programs that go along with windows (ad-aware, spybot, norton anti virus) have forced me over the edge.
I figure most of my software won't work with the new window's vista, so it's time to move to Apple. I hope some of you can answer some questions for me.
    1. I'm taking online college courses and it says that I can use Firefox for my browser, so I assume all should be well with my mac and the classes? I can't imagine it wouldn't.
    2. I have to uses ms word, powerpoint and excel for school and work, so I will buy it for mac. If I create a document on the mac using ms word, excel or powerpoint, will I be able to access/modify it on a pc using the pc versions of these programs? I have to use a pc at work and the ability for these two systems using the same programs to be compatible is imperative.
    3. Last but not least, I use a program that came with my camera, it's called Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 It says its for windows or macintosh, but it's probably 5 years old. Do you think it would work with a new version of mac?
Thanks in advance, I'm a total knothead when it comes to computers and need all the help I can get.
    Steve

My wife recently started taking on-line classes. She was a diehard Windows user for years, but she was tired of the maintenance, and wanted a machine just for school. She has run into only a few obstacles. Her institution uses Blackboard. Blackboard works fine with Safari, but does not provide the advanced editing tools that are available in Internet Explorer. The recent Firefox betas provide the advanced editing tools that her PC counterparts see, so the final version (due soon) should work even better.
With MS Office... She is using Office 2004, and it has worked OK. In the preferences, it is possible to set it so that it saves with the ".doc" extension by default. If you let it save in its normal format, it does not include the extension. If you upload the file for Windows users, they will complain that they can't open it. It is also possible to automatically save in older formats with an extension in Office 2008... Office 2007/2008 save in the DOCX format, which is not even remotely compatible with older versions.
As a "just in case"... She has a copy of Windows XP in Parallels with Office 2003. She has not had to use this, but it's there, just in case. We maxed out the RAM in her Macbook to 4GB ($100 from Crucial), and it is more than fast enough.
As a new Mac user, I would check out: NeoOffice, OpenOffice 3 (beta), VirtualBox...
My photos are my most important files, and I have been taking digital pictures since long before it was popular. My collection goes back to 1996, and I have about 20,000 pictures and short video clips- mostly of the kids. I presently use iPhoto for managing my archives, and for making minor adjustments. I would not use anything else... When I need to make major changes, I use the Gimp. It is not an Apple application, and I became familiar with it in my Linux days. Check it out- It may or may not work for your needs.

  • Gimp And Mac 10.5.6?? any Help ANY one???

I dont know where to post This..But Iam trying to use the program GIMP (to edit my pictures) But when i open it, this "X11" Screen comes up and basically takes over the whole screen. I dont know what to do or whats really going on..ANy help anyone??

    Guys,
I don't think this helps: but my experience was the same. I'm operating on 10.5.8 on a new Macbook Pro.
I downloaded GIMP for Mac at CNET downloads and found that x11 dominated the screen every time I tried to launch GIMP.
When I closed X11, GIMP had no options or palettes.
Maybe I downloaded it from the wrong place... But that giant x11 screen did my head in, so I'm steering clear of GIMP from now on.
    Any other advice?

  • Has anyone installed the GIMP?

Has anyone installed the GIMP on their iBook? I have a couple questions because of the way their site is worded:
    http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/
In the requirements section are they just explaining why it doens't run on version 9 or earlier? It almost makes it sound like you have to go download that stuff (which is why I feel stupid for asking this). :-/
This site, http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/ , which is the first site they list on the places to get GIMP, makes it sound like the application there is all you have to download, except for the extra install from the OS X Install Disk. Would that be all I needed?
I'd love to have this program on my iBook, so if anyone who has installed it could walk me through it, that'd be great.
    Thanks,
    Mandy

    Hi Mandy,
I myself have not tried GIMP.app because I have lost the urge to use X11. In order to use it, you will to download X11 from your OS X disk and install X11; not to be confused with X11SDK. I bet you can find a bunch of GIMP and X11 users in Mac OS X Technologies > Unix forum.
You may want to look at this previous post.

  • How Can I Locate The Gimp + Open Office After Install

I am a fairly new Mac user so please make your reply easy to follow. I am running Panther 10.3.9 on a G3/400, 320 megs, dsl internet. I have just installed The Gimp, a free open source image manipulation program, the Phoyoshop alternative + Open Office, the free open source Microsoft Office alternative. Both installs took place within the X11 framework but now I cannot locate them. Where have they gone? For example, when I right click on a .jpeg file, then click "open with", The Gimp is not even in the list although I want it to be my main photo program. The same when I right click on a text file, Open Office is not on the list. I just want to put a program icon for both programs on the desktop for easy access. Thanks, Ken.

Unfortunately you are using an old version of OS X, and older versions of Gimp or OO are not as well refined as they now are.
If you are using 10.3.9 you might try Seashore which is not as complete as Gimp, but does not require X11 and is also Open Source. PixelMator is another decent image editor but it is shareware as is Acorn. Photoshop Elements is Adobe's low cost alternative to Photoshop. Find demos and downloads at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
NeoOffice Aqua 3.0 is another application like Open Office that will run on a PPC without X11, but requires Tiger. The earlier version that will run on Panther is version 2.2.5. Look for these at www.neooffice.org.
All of these applications will run slower on PPC machines than on Intel machines. There's really little you can do about it. If you need something relatively fast but with fewer features you can use AppleWorks.

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:

We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used.  Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash.  If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first.  Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control.  Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.

Forget trying to use iCloud for this - it won't do what you want.  iCloud syncs certain data like contacts and events, but it doesn't sync "environments" on computers.

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared.  You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access.  The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.
