The iCloud Drive folder in Library/Mobile Documents is taking up way too much space on my startup disk
I was hoping my files would stay in the cloud and not take up a ton of space on my machine (only a 128gb SSD).  But while performing an overnight time machine backup I came back to find a "Startup Disk Full" error message.  I only have about 20gb used locally but over 200gb in iCloud Drive at the moment.
Is there a way to clear the cache so my files stay on iCloud and not hogging space on my SSD? Or a way to redirect this library to my 2nd hard drive?
I'm using a 15" mid-2012 Macbook Pro with a 1TB hard drive and I've replaced the optical drive with a 128gb SSD for my OS (which is where my library is, hence the difficulty).
Thank you!

While puttering around after posting this I think I found my personal solution here: http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/qt/Move-Your-Home-Folder-To-A-New-Loc ation.htm
I'm just going to move my home folder to my 2nd internal 1TB hard drive to solve my problem.
But my question remains, how can we minimize the amount of local space iCloud Drive ***** up?  I wanted to get the rumored new macbook air that might come out next year but this is a big turn off if iCloud drive is going to overwhelm the SSD in the AIr.

To delete and recover your space, Restore  the iPod to Factory settings, hopefully your iPod Hardisk is still in good Condition to be restored.

  • Is it possible to see the iCloud Drive folder from my iPhone?

    Hello,
Is it possible to see the iCloud drive folder on iOS 8 just as it is in iCloud and my Mac?
Lets say something like the following:
    ios-8-icloud-drive.png

Well you can consider this as well:
Considering or moving right now to iCloud Drive? Please check the following facts to avoid my terrible experience:
First of all it is not as easy as Apple Says: "Store your files in iCloud and access all them anytime on all your devices" - Lies.
    1) There is no standalone app for iCloud drive on iOS so you will not be able to access all your files from your iDevices only the ones you created with iWork.
    2) Even if you upgrade your space to 1 or 2 TB you will have storage limitation because you can upload what you Mac can storage, in a few words it is a mirror not an online hards disk.
    3) NO photos nor  videos in  iCloud, it doesn't matter how space you get you will not have access to them on the web, and not date has been confirmed for this promised feature.
    4) You will get many dumb folders in the iCloud drive even dumb iWork copies of your documents.
    5) Many unexpected errors will be waiting for your data, like the one I got when all my local copies of all my files ( any type) just disappeared and got a simple icon with the message Not Downloaded like if there were not before in the Mac. Apple open a ticket for this issue after many hours int he phone.
    6) Apple support is not well trained to handle issues related to the new services like this, you can call and ask simple questions and will be on hold a lot of time to while they figure out what to tell you. Try it.
    7) At the end you will cancel the service and go back to your previos cloud service ( just like me with Dropbox) and uploading all your files to it.
    8) If need more reasons just let me know and I will give you more to convince you that iCloud Drive will "drive you mad".

  • Is the iPhoto library supposed to be located in the iCloud Drive folder?

    27" iMac (2011) Yosemite / iCloud Drive
Is the iphoto library / database file supposed to be in the iCloud Drive?  I expect it to normally be found in the Pictures folder under the active user.  If it is not supposed to be there how did it get moved there.  The iPhoto library is also locked and is over 200 Gigabytes in size.  (see attached image)
My theory is that someone tried to move it to the iCloud Drive, without understanding the limitation.

As long as the user has purchased adequate disk space for the iCloud Drive, they can move their photo library to it. It can be anywhere so long as one modifies iPhoto so it knows where to find it.

  • How can I re-add the iCloud Drive folder to my favorites?

    Hey guys,
I accidentally dragged off my iCloud Drive folder icon in the Favorites column and now it's gone. Any ideas how I can get it back?? I tried just about everything I know.
    Thanks! Yosemite rocks!
    Eric

    Hi,
Go to Finder > Then click Finder on the top left corner next to the Apple Logo > Preferences > Sidebar > Tick the iCloud Drive. And the folder will be there.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers,
    Mann B

  • If I delete a file in iCloud, what happens to the local file in ~/Library/Mobile Documents ?

If I delete a file in iCloud, what happens to the local file in ~/Library/Mobile Documents ? Does it get deleted to?
    Hope somebody can help.
    Thx.

I'm pretty certain that it gets deleted as well. If you try and open that mobile documents folder, it takes you to the iCloud drive folder. I've been searching for this same issue for the last 24 hours also as I inadvertently deleted my Keynote files stored on iCloud drive thinking I was just temporarily deleting Keynote from my iPad when upgrading to the latest iOS 8 version. (I needed space and thought, "Oh, I'll just reinstall later... Turns out I was in the iCloud storage area, not in my iPad storage area at the time and therefore deleted all my iCloud stored presentations. From every device.)

  • Changing position of iCloud Drive folder

Sorry for my english. I want to know if it's possible to change the position of iCloud Drive folder in a different volume (not startup volume).

Sorry for my english. I want to know if it's possible to change the position of iCloud Drive folder in a different volume (not startup volume).
The iCloud Drive documents are stored in your user library in your Home folder.
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents
The safest way to move this folder to an external drive would be to move your complete home folder to the external drive. That would be no problem on a Desktop computer, but cumbersome on a portable Mac, where you may not always want the external drive connected.
    See:  http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/qt/Move-Your-Home-Folder-To-A-New-Loc ation.htm
(but ignore the adds on that page).

  • Can I move iCloud Drive folder to my Time Capsule?

Can I move iCloud Drive folder to my Time Capsule?
I have 250Gb storage on my Macbook, but plan to by the 500Gb storage plan from Apple. To do that I'd need to used the iCloud Drive folder on an larger external hard drive, instead of my own Macbook...
Does anyone knows if that can be done?
I also use Drop Box and it's local drive can be 'move' to an external HD easily...
    Tks!

The iCloud Drive folder is is stored in your user library, in the folder ~/Library/Mobile Documents
If you want to move this folder to an external drive, you would have to relocate your home folder there. Moving the home folder is supported, but not moving parts of the user library.
But that would not be practical on a portable Mac to move the home folder to an external drive, because you could not log in without connecting the external drive.

  • How do I access the iCloud Preview folder from my iPhone?

Just a simple how to question.  PDF files are what I want to be able to view, since my Mac insists on defaulting to the iCloud Preview folder, I assume there must be a  corresponding way to read them on iDevices...

Yea, a number of people have wondered why there isn't a general iCloud Drive app that would allow you to see all the documents and launch a compatible app on your device to view them.  Perhaps that will be added in the future.  If you would like to see this changed, you can let Apple know here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html.

  • ICloud Drive Folder not showing up in Finder

Hi, I have a Macbook Air (2013) and I'm running the most up to date BETA Version of OS X Yosemite. I read somewhere that is is essentially the exact same as the newly released Yosemite. My iCloud Drive Folder is NOT showing up in my favorites in Finder. I can only access iCloud Drive when I open up Finder and then click on the "Go" button in the menubar. How can I add the iCloud Drive folder to "Favorites" in Finder??? I've read it should automatically be there but it's not. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

iCloud drive will not show in your "Devices" section, but in the Favourites.
Your "Favourites" are hidden.  Move the pointer to the right of the word "Favorites" to reveal the hidden Hide/Show controls and unhide them.  iCloud Drive will not show as a drive, but like a cloud.

  • Does anyone know how to change the location of Library/Mobile Documents?

Several months ago I decided to try a Solid state drive and during the process for space reasons I relocated my home folder to another internal drive.  Last week I decided to get rid of the solid state and replace it with the original 750 gig drive I had and move my home folder back to this (my system) drive.  During the process of moving my home folder the first time I had partitioned that drive in to 3 parts so that I could use part of it as a backup for my system drive.
I now want to erase that drive and reset it back to a single partition.  I am unable to erase and/or repartition because I can't unmount the partition that contained my old home folder.  I was able to put it in the trash and erase the contents it but everytime I restart my computer a new home folder (by name only as it does not have the house icon) is created on the old partition with the following folders:
    User Folder
         Library
              Mobile Documents.
I thought it was Icloud related so I tried turning off Icloud and trashing this folder but still was unable to unmount the partition or drive and upon rebooting (even with Icloud off) the folder reappeared.  I'm at a loss as to what to try to do now.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    1. boot from Install DVD
    2. open Disk Utility
    3. Select the hard drive from left hand column (NOT partition but drive, eg something like WDBEVE and not s03 etc).
    4. Click on Partition tab in main window
    5. Select "Current"
    6. Select partition you wish to delete
    7. Click on minus sign on bottom left
    8. Confirm Delete
    9. Drag original partition to include full disk
    10. Confirm resize
That's it! Reboot and you're done.

  • Where is the iCloud Drive app icon (folder) in iOS 8? Like the one the show on their website.

I am running Yosemite on my Macs and updated to ios8 on all of my iPads and iPhone. Yet, I have found no way to access my iCloud Drive folder on the mobile devices. The Apple website for iCloud clearly shows iOS devices viewing an iCloud drive folder with end user customized sub-folders. I called tech support and they agreed that that's what the website was showing but informed me that as iCloud Drive and ios8 are so new they did not know yet how to set them up. I arrange my files by project not program and I need to view PDFs and other non iWork's files. Does anyone out there have a clue? Thank you.

I'm not using it, but my understanding is that you can only access iCloud Drive documents on an iOS device from within an app that is iCloud Drive compatible.  At least at the present time, there isn't an iCloud Drive app for an iOS device that provides general access to documents.  See http://www.imore.com/icloud-drive-clearing-up-confusion.

  • How can I transfer all my documents to the ICLOUD drive?

How can I transfer all of my documents on my Mac to the ICLOUD drive without doing it Manually one by one?

Do you have signed up for enough iCloud storage, that all your documents will fit?
Make a current backup of your Mac, before you move the documents over.
Do you want to move your documents to the app-specific folders - Preview, Pages, etc, or do yu want to create your own folder hierarchy?
In the app specific folders yo can only have one level of nested sub folders, so you will have to move the documents in small groups. But outside these folders you could create a new folder iCloudHome and drag complete folders from your Home folder over.
Be careful not to try to upload more files than your iCloud Storage permits. I would not try to upload too many files at once. You cannot work with the files, while they are uploading.

  • How can I change the hard drive location of the iCloud Drive?

I am using a SSD for my boot drive, but it's space is limited.
So I would like to relocate the iCloud Drive to one of my internal HDs, but I see no option to do this.
Let's hope Apple would make such an obvious option available.
I don't want to change the location of my entire Home directory, as that would slow down my access to cache files, etc...
I had one suggestion of using the terminal with an "ln -s" command to create a soft link.  However, it appears the iCloud Drive is store in ~/Library/Mobile Documents.  If I remove this directory or any subdirectory, they are automatically recreated, I assume by some sort of background process.
Does anybody know if this is possible, and how to accomplish it?
    Thanks.

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.
