The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The semaphore timeout period has expired (0x80070079))

Recently we got this error, while backup to tape, and no idea what is it.
What cause of this error?

Hi,
Try this workaround, increase the TcpMaxDataRetransmissions to 10 or more.
How to modify the TCP/IP maximum retransmission timeout
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/170359
Diagnostic steps when "Semaphore timeout" is hit during network transfer:
1. Check if the protected server (sender) or DPM (receiver) was under stress or inaccessible during the time of failure – from event logs from both the machines. Retry should work if the packet loss was because of either of the servers being inaccessible
or under stress for a period.
2. Check if the network between the PS and the DPM is flaky – retransmit count from ‘netstat –s’ or perfmon counters can give an idea.
3. Else contact network support engineer to diagnose the packet loss issue – netmon captures from both machines, packet route and network layout/devices will be required to start the investigation.
4. Take some performance monitor logs on both DPM and Proteted server side.
Some good and basic perfmon counters to take to see if the servers are under stress are below.
Logical Disk/Physical Disk
\%idle
• 100% idle to 50% idle = Healthy
• 49% idle to 20% idle = Warning or Monitor
• 19% idle to 0% idle = Critical or Out of Spec
\%Avg. Disk Sec Read or Write
• .001ms to .015ms  = Healthy
• .015ms to .025 = Warning or Monitor
• .026ms or greater = Critical or Out of Spec
Current Disk Queue Length (for all instances)
80 requests for more than 6 minutes.
• Indicates possibly excessive disk queue length.
Memory
\Pool Non Paged Bytes*
• Less that 60% of pool consumed=Healthy
• 61% - 80% of pool consumed = Warning or Monitor.
• Greater than 80% pool consumed = Critical or Out of Spec.
\Pool Paged Bytes*
• Less that 60% of pool consumed=Healthy
• 61% - 80% of pool consumed = Warning or Monitor.

  • The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))

    Hello,
We are getting the following error when trying to backup our fileserver (DPM 2012 R2) to tape.
"The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))"
    What is interesting:
    - The "Short-Term Protection" to disk runs successfully without error
    - The "Long-Term Protection" to tape fails after writing ~2TB of data to a TL2000 tape loader. (Always appears to fail towards end of job with the above error)
    - In the past (until roughly a month ago) the tape portion of this job was completing successfully.
The DPM logs fail to give much information around the time of error regarding any failures. Likewise windows event logs give no hint of a problem when the job fails.
Looking for any ideas that may help resolve this.
    Cheers!

    Hi
Has it just started happening? What rollup version are you on currently?

    Hi
First we Need some more Informations.
What are you trying to Backup?
    Has it worked before?
Are there any Errors on the Agent Tab?
Are there any Errors on the affectet Server in the Event Log?

  • The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))

For the past couple of days I have been getting the following alert on my tape backups:
    Cannot verify tape data.
The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))
It has completed the backup but I get this error when performing a verify or when I try and restore.
This error only occurs on the same server we backup in the protection group. The other 5 servers backup fine.
We are using DPM 2010 (3.0.8195.0)

    Same here.
When I came back from vacation I found the same error in our DPM 2012.
The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: No more data is on the tape (0x80070450))
I cannot find anything in the eventlog saying that the tapelibrary has been offline.
    How can I check that?
Last nights tape-job went "almost" well, one server (VM) still has this error. (But I dont know if that depends on the fact that it had status "Missing" in hyper-v manager due to a Win-update shutdown on a host that had a  misconfiguration (auto-reebot).)
I rebooted the DPM-server this morning and then I tried to manually run all tapejobs again but they get this status again.
I do not understand this error and why it suddenly appears to work again for a scheduled job but not when I trigger the job manually.
Is there not a solution for this?
    /Anders

  • VIP Swap and 'The semaphore timeout period has expired' errors

We use the VIP swap technique of rolling out new versions of our apps. These apps use an Azure SQL Database. Starting sometime early this year we started seeing SQL Database errors during the VIP swap. The problem is very consistent, if we have database
activity during the VIP Swap it is very likely to generate one or more of these errors. As you can see below in our custom formatted version of the error the actual SQL Error number is 121 and the text is 'The semaphore timeout period has expired':
SQLError Number:121, Message:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.)
We do utilize the Enterprise library for transient error handling and I have seen these errors from time to time and random points, but the fact that this is very consistent with a VIP swap bothers me. Since both deployments exist before and after the VIP swap
why would there be any interruption in SQL Database connectivity? Our apps consist of a Web App, a few Web Services, and a few Worker Roles. I have seen this error from all of them at different times during VIP swaps.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Curious,
    Thank you for your question.
I am trying to involve someone more familiar with this topic for a further look at this issue. Sometime delay might be expected from the job transferring. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • Windows 8: 0x80070079 The semaphore timeout period has expired

I am getting the following error when I try to move files/folders onto my external hardrive.
0x80070079 The semaphore timeout period has expired.
How can I resolve this issue? Thank you.

    Hi,
We need some steps to troubleshoot:
Were the files you attempted to move located on the local hard drive?
Please change another port for External hard drive to connect to your computer for test.
Please disconnect the network and try again for test.
Temporarily disable the firewall and anti-virus to check the result.
If it doesn't resolve the issue, perform an safe mode to check the result:

  • Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired

Whenever I try to copy large files over a wireless network (Laptop > Desktop) I get the following error:-
Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired
I've done a search on Google and have found that a number of other users are having the same problem, but no-one seems to have a fix for it.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello Ady,
    Thanks for your post!
This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:
    1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
    2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
    3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.
(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
    4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:
(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045
(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:
    1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
    2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
    3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
    4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?
    5.    Models of the wireless network adapter and wireless router.
More details about his issue are preferred. Thanks!
    Have a nice weekend!

  • The semaphore timeout period has expired

Ok seriously what the heck does this mean? Its been happening within this last week! I am using Secure CRT...connectivity is fine between me and router no drops in pings for over 30 mintues.

I too see this problem.  Did you solve it?  If so what did you do?
Everything I've read says to modify or turn off Windows SNP Chimney stack and SynAttack protect.  My server guys say they've done all of this but the problem still persists and now they are pointing at the firewall as the problem.

    Hi quodd,,
We are sorry for the issue being faced by you. I need some information from you so that I take further steps:
    1. Which Adobe product are you using Acrobat or Adobe reader- what is the complete version?
    2. How are you opening and saving the PDF, the exact workflow?
Are you doing it from within Adobe Reader/Acrobat application or opening it from browser, doing changes and saving it using browser itself.
    3. Can you try to save a PDF to library with Custom template and managed metadata columns using browser directly.
    4. Please verify that columns name do not contain spaces or some other special characters.

  • Newsfeed error - The operation failed because the server could not access the distributed cache.

Recently installed SharePoint 2013 RTM, on the newsfeed page an error is displayed, and no entries display in the following or everyone tabs.

    - User Profile Service is operational and syncing as expected
    - Search is operational and indexing as expected
    - The farm was installed based on the autospinstaller scripts.

I have as Muvoo N200 and i have beent rying to fix it for months . i got an email from the support ftaff out of europe on a new way to install the firware so i did and as it was downloading on my pc i got the windows operating system has occured the following error:. and now my player wont even turn on or do nothing. anyone have any idea on what this problem is?

Sadly, I noticed that the post was very old, but I am not having luck finding a solution to my problem anywhere on the boards. I was hoping that if I necro-posted that someone would still pick up on it and be able to help. I've scoured the internet looking for a solution, and been in contact with Creative "customer support" via e-mail and the only solution they keep giving me is to send the Stone in. What I really WANT is for someone to give me the previous version of the firmware and see if that does the trick since my Stone worked FINE until the most recent firmware update!!!!!!!!
!!! Support has been very UNhelpful, and since you can't get a human on the phone it seems very easy for them to basically ignore and send the same canned response over and over which is to send the Stone in. I've only had the player for 6 months, it was working fine until I upgraded the firmware and now I can barely get my computer to recognize the device.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything that I can find. I've reset, and reformatted the player numerous times, uninstalled and reinstalled the repair tool.... I've tried every fix that I can find on the internet and nothing is working. The only thing that I CANT find is an old version of the firmware, and Creative refuses to send that out to me.
I received the thing as a gift last year for Christmas, so I don't have a receipt for it and I'm refusing to spend any money for its repair since the Creative Firmware screwed it up in the first place!

  • Azure Backup fails with error 0x003E6 after data transmission (Protection Agent Failure)

On a Windows Essentials 2012 Server (German) I had Azure Backup up and running for several months.
(Probably) After adding features to support Remote Access, Azure Backup stopped working.
The backup schedule executes and transfers all data, than it constantly fails with the error:
"Fehler beim Vorgang aufgrund eines Schutz-Agent-Fehlers. Wiederholen Sie den Vorgang (0x003E6)" which translates to the english "The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. Retry the operation (0x003E6)".
An update of the Backup Agent to the latest version did not resolve the issue.
Does anybody know details about this error and the reason behind it?
    Regards,
    Dominik

    Hi Dominik,
First please check if there is any new policy was set such as a throttle for uploading data, or a firewall was enabled before the issue occurs.
There is no enough information for finding out the exact cause. Please also check if there is any error and event logs. These can be found in the Application Event log under WindowsAzureBackup.

  • Protection Agent failure error during backup to tape with DPM 2010.

    DPM TechNet Forum,
We are experiencing an intermittent error when backing up to tape using DPM 2010 (with latest QFE roll-up applied).

    Hi,
You can try to reproduce the problem outside of DPM using some external utilities.  If you have more than one drive in the library, run the test against both drives simultaneously to simulate multiple backup jobs running.  If you get an error
before the tape fills you can use net helpmsg errorcode to see what the error was.
Download the DPMerasetape.zip file from the following link and extract to c:\temp folder.

Once you move a tape into a drive, use mytape commands Loadtape, taperewind, locktape, Disable hardware compression, Set block size to 65536 (64K), writeforspanning.
You need the symbolic name for the tape drive you loaded media into - look in the DPM console by clicking the tape drive and look at the details for
\\.\tape########.  use that in the following command.

  • Creating Protection Group Fails with Error:360 The operation failed due to a virtual disk service error

    Hello
    I'm setting up a DPM server (2012 R2) at a remote site; everything goes well with no issues until a protection group is created, at which point I get the following error;
Create protection group: Protection Group 1 failed:
Error 360: The operation failed due to a virtual disk service error
Error details: The system cannot find the file specified
    Recommended action: Retry the operation.
    The environment is as follows;
    - Virtual Machine Running Server 2008 R2 Fully updated
    - Storage Pool is an iSCSI connection Thick Provisioned 1TB GPT and shows in Disk Management with no issues.
    - Have connected to Session 0 (console)
    - Error log shows The provider did not receive a Plug and Play service notification for the volume. volume=10  for the VDS Dynamic Provider
    Can Anyone Help?
    Thanks
    .Adam Langdon

    Hi,
Disk defrag is initiated when a volume shrink is attempted. See if there is any problem defragging a volume and correct any problems doing that.
