The OS is extremely slow/frozen

So, out of nowhere my laptop just froze. I tried doing a hard restart, and it took about 30 minutes to get to the login window and another 20 to actually load the desktop and the dock. Then it completely hung up when I was trying to look in Library/Caches. The beach ball is spinning for hours now, the finder won't populate with content, screen saver doesn't come on, and I can't force quit (I am not running any apps anyway). This happened after GF went to a Jewel/Osco website on Camino Browser. She said she accepted some certificate, and/or checked her Yahoo Mail.
I am at a loss as to what to do. I only have CD's for 10.3, and my drive will only read DVD's. Besides, I don't want to lose a whole bunch of files if I just zero-write and reinstall. HELP!

Have you been hearing any unusual noises, like clicking? If you can free up some more space to about 5GB free (be sure to empty Trash), here's some other things to do.

You said you restored the iPod. Was the restore successful, that is, it went though all the steps without errors?
Try a restore to factory settings/new iPod if yuhave not doe so so far.
Are you using the headphones that came with the iPod? Are you inserting the plug fully
Have you tried another set of headphones in the iPod?
The speaker is not that loud.

How can I speed up logins using MacBooks to a Windows Server 2008 environment. Logging onto the network is extremely slow. We are using a wireless connection to the network in classrooms

I work in an Education environment with Windows Server 2008. I am trying to join our Macbooks to Active Directory. They are joined but the login is extremely slow. I read that this is because of a possible problem with an OS update.

Check the ethernet link speed when connected directly to the TC.. if you are plugged into the modem direct.. and comparing that with wireless on the TC we have no way of knowing where the issue is.
There is some issue related by someone when the TC was bridged.
It is extremely hard to impossible to know what is causing wireless slow down.. needs lots more info.
What is the link speed?
Set manually and try different channels.
The series 1 cannot do 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously but test on 5ghz and see what the speed is like. You will need to be in the same room as the TC.

Your profile says OS 10.5.8, Snow Leopard is 10.6.
After installing Snow Leopard, did you do a software update? Apple menu / Software update ..
If you have not run it yet, do so. It will give you the highest versions of Snow Leopard and Safari. That might help.

After installing iOS7 the typing is extremely slow!!! It can take minuters to type a word and if I use the backspace it just dies and it takes forever for it to start working again. This is happening only on the apple applikations - not in Other apps (Facebook, instagram, etc). It makes writing maila and messages impossible - pleas help! ( I wrote this on my IPad that haven't been uppgraded yet - and is not going to be before the problems with my Phoenix is fixad....)

Go to settings> iCloud turn off documents and data and restart your phone. It should resolve this.

Why is the Yosemite download EXTREMELY slow?

I have the fastest internet available in my area and I usually download movies and other files of similar size to the Yosemite upgrade in just a few hours. When starting the download of Yosemite the download time was estimated at roughly 5 days 20 hours. I download digital copies of movies from apple all the time with no problem so why is Yosemite taking so long to download? I have confirmed that it's not a problem with my internet connection and my Macbook does not have connectivity issues either. Someone please tell me that OS X Yosemite will finish downloading sometime in this lifetime!

you know very well it has nothing to do with itunes or the modem/router. apple servers are very very slow and its an absolute disgrace.
you can download from third party servers at twice the speeds (at your own risk)

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

Why does both the firefox and the plug-in use over 1gb ram of my computer memory? It is making the whole computer extremly slow and you should do something about it, or make it possible to download FireFox 3,6

FireFox 3,6 was only using 400mb or so. When I got FireFox 4 it all have been much more than that, almost everytime I use firefox. The plugin is using more than it should, no matter how few tabs I have open it still will not make the number go any lower. I can almost not use my computer because of this.

Don't know if it is your problem, but your Adobe Flash plug-in at 10.2.159.* is not up to date. You current one today is 10.3.181.22 for Firefox users. And not being up-to-date with Flash has a lot of problems.

Portege R400-600 - Access to the harddive is extremely slow

Any Advice? The driver is "up to date", but it still takes ages. MS Outlook 2007 often hangs for a minute etc.

The Portg R400 is a tiny unit and if Im not mistaken the small 1.8 HDD supports an 4200rpm speed with the IDE (ATA-6) interface.
The access time should not be very long
But you should know that many additional applications are preinstalled on this notebook to control the different R400 features. All or most of these programs are loaded at the beginning and run in the OS background. This stresses the CPU and the memory and therefore many different programs would need a little bit longer to start the own service.

Tabs won't appear, extremely slow, does not save settings.

For the past few months I've been experiencing a host of difficulties with Firefox. When I open a new window, the appearance is totally different from what the original window was, with the "Open a new tab" button on the left instead of the right, and the current tab that opens is not visible in the bar. When I try to change this in the settings, it just doesn't seem to take. This same problem is true for any window, secondary or otherwise. If I close everything, open a new session, change the settings to how I like them (which I have to do every time) and then close that window, nothing stays the way I set it.
Also, the browser runs extremely slow. And when I say extreme, I mean it can take 20 minutes to open a new session. And once I start using it, it likes to periodically speed up to a normal pace for a few minutes, hours, days - it's not predictable - and then come to a crashing halt again.
The final problem is less irritating, but equally perplexing. I have a few folders in my bookmarks toolbar that contain anywhere from 10-50 websites each, and they like to spontaneously auto-scroll to the top of the list, despite my attempts to scroll down. This problem just goes on and on until it suddenly stops for unknown reasons.
I would really, REALLY appreciate some help clearing up these problems. Thanks!

It usually helps to close and restore that tab (History > Recently Closed Tabs; Cmd+Shift+T) to make the others appear.

Time Capsule extremely slow recover

Since my iPhoto Library has been corrupted, I am trying to test some old versions/backup by restoring them from my Time Capsule (2TB last version on the Apple Store), but unfortunately the process is extremely slow. My iPhoto Library is 35GB and the required time for the transfer is about 5 days!!
I did some tests: no prob with the WiFi: if I try to manually transfer a 1GB file on WiFi in the finder from my Mac to the TC disk it takes a few minutes. However, the iPhoto Library recover from TC is taking ages... any idea??

The iphoto library is a huge number of small files.. not one big file.
Wireless is extremely inefficient at handling the data stream plus all the back and forth file info required .. please use ethernet.
Simply plug in ethernet.. make sure you have a connection then turn wireless off.. If it stops the file transfer I am very sorry. You will need to start over most likely.
IPv6 can also help but you need it set correctly to link local only .. auto is not good enough.

Extremely slow wireless xfer from Macbook to USB drive on Airport Extreme

I have tried to set up my external 1TB seagate USB drive to my AE for wireless network storage (only 1 computer on network, but I also have an AppleTV). If the drive is connected directly to my MB the transfer speeds are fine, but when I try to go wireless the speeds are extremely slow - to the point of unusable. I am sure these issues have been discussed previously, but I cant find an obvious solution. Is there anyway to run network diagnostics to see what my MB->AE transfer speeds are and what my AE-WWW speeds are? I dont recall the cable bandwidth that I get from Time Warner - but it is one of the faster options.......

There are at least two explanations for this: (1) Your wireless connection is like to be slower than a direct USB connection. (2) Apple base stations are quite when serving connected disk drives. One reference cites 10-30% of the speed of a directly-connected USB drive.
I dont recall the cable bandwidth that I get from Time Warner - but it is one of the faster options.
I wouldn't expect that to be a factor in the performance you're seeing.
