The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.
Hello,
I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the  operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile  and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
Erase database:
sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
sudo serveradmin start postgres
sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name  should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.
Now enjoy Profile and Device Manager !

HI
1. In Action profiles, logon to system and recheck correcion are available in action definition as well in condition configuration and the schedule condition is also maintained. but the display is not coming(i.e in the worklist this action is not getting displayed).
You can check the schedule condition for the action and match the status values...or try recreating the action with schedule condition again....for customer specific ....copy the standard aciton with ur zname and make a schedule condition and check the same.
2, In suppport team of incident when i give individual processor it throwing a warning that u r not the processor. but when i give org unit it is working perfectly. Could anyone guide on this.

But now , the hole process of sign uping is changed , please remove the wrong guide its not working , and why apple not let to access the free app .!!!

Try going to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • The address toolbar is missing. I have followed the online guides to resolve this issue- not working. Any other ideas?

The address toolbar is missing. I have followed the online guides to resolve this issue including disabling add-ins and extensions. The problem does not occur in safe mode. But does occur even when acceleration, all extensions & add-ins and themes are disabled. I have also reloaded firefox 4. Any other ideas?

If the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, restart again in that configuration and then in the menu which appears, checkmark the option: "Disable All Add-ons". Then click the button called "Make changes and restart".
Next, re-enable your add-ons one-by-one until the problem recurs. Then you'll know which one is the culprit.

Can I send iTunes gift to a recipient email address which is non apple account email (I.e. Comcast or Gmail) as long as the person has an apple account and device to redeem it for use.

Yes - gifts are sent to an email address not to the iTunes account, the email has a redemption code in it which the recipient then redeems. The recipient needs to be in the same country as yourself, he/she won't be able to redeem it if their account is in a different country's store.

  • What is the difference between generate partner profile and creat partner

What is the difference between generate partner profile and creat partner profile ?

Create Partner ProfilesAlthough partner profiles are usually created automatically, because of the unusual inbound and outbound profiles needed on the same system, the manual generation of certain profiles is required.
The following subsections describe the partner profile settings for the standard client (assumed here to be ALExxxCyyy), as well as for the corresponding dummy client (assumed to be DUMxxxCyyy). The dummy client partner profiles should have been generated by the automatic generation process completed previously. Nevertheless, these should be checked to ensure that all profiles exist.
    Generation of Partner Profiles
The following messages should be added to the 4xx-ORDR model for ALExxxCyyy to DUMxxxCyyy on the reference client:
    • ORDERS
    • ORDCHG
    • ZINVRV
    • ORDRSP
    • INVOIC
    • FIDCMT
    • The partner profiles should first be generated using the standard auto-generation procedure on the reference client (for SYNCH messages to be created).
    • This model should now be distributed to the both ALExxxCyyy and DUMxxxCyyy.
    • The partner profiles should now be generated on the client being configured (i.e. yyy) using the auto-generation procedure defined in the standard ALE configuration procedures.
Generate partner profiles for sending system. (Can only do this if at least 1 message type exists against the sending system's LS). This automatically generates the port if the LS and RFC name are the same.
    generate partner profiles tcode BD82
    creating partner profiles tcode WE20
 There are two methods for maintaining the partner profile:
     Maintain partner profile manually:
To navigate to the partner profile in the sender system, choose Partner profile -> Partner type of Logical System and click on the required Target system. Under Outbound parameters, choose the Create outbound parameters icon, and enter the values for the outbound parameters according to the slide Sender: Partner Profile (outbound).
To navigate to the partner profile in the sender system, choose Partner profile -> Partner type of Logical System and click on the required Sending system. Under Inbound parameters, choose the Create inbound parameters icon and enter the values for the inbound parameters according to the slide Sender: Partner Profile (inbound).
     Generate partner profile:
Prerequisite: The current distribution model is distributed to all participating systems.
In the sender system, choose: Generate Partner Profile, then check the result in the partner profile (outbound)
In the sender system, choose: Generate Partner Profile, then check the result in the partner profile (inbound)

  • Resize/Slim/Removed Hidden Partition: The ultimate guide Part I

    Claimer:
The author of this post is NOT responsible for any consequence resulted from adopting the methods of this post.
Section 0: Why bother to Tame a Preinstalled system?
0.1.    Preinstalled system comes with unwanted applications
0.2.    Prepartitioned disk may not suit the end uers needs.
0.3.    Hidden partition takes too much space
    Section 1: Tools needed
1.1.    Backup tools, such as Ghost v.11 or Acronis TrueImage
1.2.    Disk Management tools, such as Acronis Disk Director or Diskgen.exe.  (The latter of which is a tiny, but powerful disk management tool that runs in Win98 and (but in Chinese GUI) allows  to edit disk partition parameters).  I use the latter almost all the time.
1.3.    Bootup disk, such as DOS, Win98 bootup disk. Preferably Win98 since it recognizes external usb key/disk
    Section 2:  Before you start
2.1.   Understanding Hard Disk geometry:  (Google if the reader needs more information)
Each hard disk comes with a disk geometry which includes the configuration scheme of the total cylinders, heads and sectors of the whole disk.  Such a scheme is presented is CHS or LBA values.   Use disk management tools to view the disk geometry information and write down the CHS information of each partition, especially, the partition boundary information.
Usually, a partition starts with CHS=*- 0-1 and ends with CHS=*- *-63, where the second * in the ending value may quite well be 239.  So, let us assume this is the disk geometry.
    To be more detailed
    a)      The MBR takes CHS=0-0-1
    b)      The first  primary partition starts from CHS=0-1-1 and ends at CHS=*-239-63, where * corresponds to the cylinder number that depends on partition size.
    c)       The second and the third primary partitions start from CHS=*-0-1 and end at CHS=*-239-63
    d)      But the fourth primary partition, which includes all logical partitions, starts from CHS=*-0-1 and ends at CHS=*=239-63.  Specifically, each logical partition starts from CHS=*-1-1 and ends at CHS=*-239-63.
Such information is needed since with the prepartitioned hard disk, the second primary, where preinstalled windows xp/vista resides, does NOT start at the correction boundary, which should be CHS=*-0-1 and CHS=*-239-63.  Thus when restoring the os by Acronis TrueImage, the application will report an error message  <..disk size does not match ...> , in which case please set the partition to start from CHS=*-0-1 and end at CHS=*-239-63.
Violation of the generic disk geometry will result in Partition Magic reporting errors, such as <the partition does not end on/start from boundary>
    2.2   Understanding Partition Table.
     a)  The MBR stores the partition table for the whole disk and stores the boot record for the OS whose booting record is injected in the MBR. Error in MBR will cause boot failure, disk read error, partition table loss or complete data loss. In the last two  cases, do not write anything into the disk or format it, use data recovery tools to recover the partition table and data by binary searching techniques.
    b)  Each logical partition uses CHS=*-0-1 to store its boot record (which includes partition type, pointer to the file allocation table). This is why each logical partition starts from CHS=*-1-1
CAUTION: DO NOT ERASE ANY BOOT RECORD INFORMATION UNLESS YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THE DATA

CAUTION: DO NOT ERASE ANY BOOT RECORD INFORMATION UNLESS YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THE DATA
    Section 3:  The real Taming
    2.3.  Install the needed tools.
    a)  Install a copy of Acronis TrueImage and Acronic Disk Director.
    b)  backup the Hidden partition to an external usb disk
    c) Use Acronis disk director resize the partition (but not always the hidden partition) and if necessary,  restore a copy of windows vista/xp via the System Recovery.
or if a completely new disk configuration is wanted,  please see 2.4
    2.4.  Extreme Taming
Caution:  Operations here in this subsection are only for ADVANCED PC USERS WITH DATA RECOVERY EXPERIENCE AND A FULL UNDERSTAING OF DISK PARTITION PARAMETERS
    A)     Back up the hidden partition with ghost v11 and also with Acronis TrueImage (the reason to make up two backup copies will be explained in 2.4-F), say, into hiddenpt.tib or hiddenpt.gho, and check file integrity after imaging until everything is proved correct.
    B)      Bootup with win98 disk and format the whole disk with Partition Magic or diskgen.exe. Do not partition the disk with many different tools since they may assign to the same disk different disk geometries and cause compatibility issues.
    C)      Usually, linux users will set up a primary partition with ext3 file format and install lilo or grub bootup loader in the first section of the root partition since windows operation systems will intentionally replace the boot record in the mbr by their own.
    D)     So, usually, an advanced user will have 3 primary partitions: one for the hidden partition, another for a windows os, the rest for a windows os or a linux distridution. (I take this scheme) and then, set up a swap partition and some logical partitions
    E)      Up until now, do not copy precious data onto the newly partitioned disk since an extremely dangerous operation will be carried out if need be
    F)      slim the hidden partition
    G)     Now Copy  hiddenpt.tib or hiddenpt.ghot  to some directory (backing up something is always worthwhile) (since editing the .tib or .gho file will change its contents and a copeid one for editing will assure that the original backup copy of the hidden partition is always intact)       Mount the backup image file, say, hiddenpt.tib, in read/write mode, by AcronisTrueImage or by ghostv11 if you have another windows os, or if not, restore a copy of the windows os from the hidden partition (if it is still intact) (or from hiddenpt.gho if it happens to be destroyed) and install acronic trueimage and mount the hiddenpt.tib  file in read and write mode. The reason two backup copies are needed is because Acronis TrueImage needs a windows os to run (or if a winpe with acronis trueimage integrated is available, then one copy is enough) but it is much safer to use Acronis TrueImage to edit a backup .tib file than to use ghost v11 to edit a backup .gho file.

  • Need help understanding profiles and color management

I made the big leap from inexpensive inkjets to:
    1 Epson 3800 Standard
    2 Spyder3Studio
I have a Mac Pro Quad, Aperture, PS3, etc.
I have a steep learning curve ahead, here's what I've done:
1 Read a lot of books, watched tutorials, etc.
    2 Calibrated the monitor
3 Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    What I've found:
1 The sample print produced by Spyder3Print, using the profile I created with color management turned off in the print dialog, looks very good.
2 When I get into Aperture, and apply the .icc profile I created in the proofing profile with onscreen proofing, the onscreen image does not change appreciably compared with the no proof setting. It gets slightly darker
3 When I select File>Print image, select the profile I created, turn off color management and look a the resulting preview image it looks much lighter and washed out than the onscreen image with onscreen proofing turned on.
4 When I print the image, it looks the same as was shown in the print preview...light and washed out, which is much different than what is shown in edit mode.
5 When I open PS3 with onscreen soft-proofing, the onscreen image is light and washed out...just like displayed in PS3 preview. If I re-edit the image to look OK onscreen, and print with the profile and color management turned off, the printed image looks OK.
    So, why am I confused?
1 In the back of my simplistic and naive mind, I anticipated that in creating a custom printer profile I would only need to edit a photo once, so it looks good on the calibrated screen, and then a custom printer profile will handle the work to print a good looking photo. Different profiles do different translations for different printers/papers. However, judging by the PS work, it appears I need to re-edit a photo for each printer/paper I encounter...just doesn't seem right.
2 In Aperture, I'm confused by the onscreen proofing does not present the same image as what I see in the print preview. I'm selecting the same .icc profile in both locations.
I tried visiting with Spyder support, but am not able to explain myself well enough to help them understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
You have understand that maintaining the colour is done by morphing the colourants, and you have understood that matching the digital graphic display (which is emissive) to the print from the digital graphic printer (which is reflective) presupposes a studio lighting situation that simulates the conditions presupposed in the mathematical illuminant model for media independent matching. Basically, for a display-to-print match you need to calibrate and characterise the display to something like 5000-55000 kelvin. There are all sorts of arguments surrounding this, and you will find your way through them in time, but you now have the gist of the thing.
So far so good, but what of the problem posed by the digital graphic printer? If you are a professional photographer, you are dependent on your printer for contract proofing. Your prints you can pass to clients and to printers, but your display you cannot. So this is critical.
The ICC Specification was published at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf in May 1995 and ColorSync 2 Golden Master is on the WWDC CD for May 1995. Between 1995 and 2000 die reine Lehre said to render your colour patch chart in the raw condition of the colour device.
The problem with this is that in a separation the reflectance of the paper (which is how you get to see the colours of the colourants laid down on top of the paper) and the amount of colourant (solid and combinations of tints) gives you the gamut.
By this argument, you would want to render the colour patch chart with the most colourant, but what if the most colourant produces artifacts? A safer solution is to have primary ink limiting as part of the calibration process prior to rendering of the colour patch chart.
You can see the progression e.g. in the BEST RIP which since 2002 has been owned by EFI Electronics for Imaging. BEST started by allowing access to the raw colour device, with pooling problems and whatnot, but then introduced a primary ink limiting and linearisation.
The next thing you need to know is what colour test chart to send to the colour device, depending on whether the colour device is considered an RGB device or a CMYK device. By convention, if the device is not driven by a PostScript RIP it is considered an RGB device.
The colour patch chart is not tagged, meaning that it is deviceColor and neither CIEBased colour or ICCBased colour. You need to keep your colour patch chart deviceColor or you will have a colour characterisation of a colour managed conversion. Which is not what you want.
If the operating system is colour managed through and through, how do you render a colour test chart without automatically assigning a source ICC profile for the colourant model (Generic RGB Profile for three component, Generic CMYK Profile for four component)?
The convention is that no colour conversion occurs if the source ICC device profile and the destination ICC device profile are identical. So if you are targetting your inkjet in RGB mode, you open an RGB colourant patch chart, set the source ICC profile for the working space to the same as the destination ICC profile for the device, and render as deviceColor.
You then leave the rendered colourant test chart to dry for one hour. If you measure a colourant test chart every ten minutes through the first hour, you may find that the soluble inkjet inks in drying change colour. If you wait, you avoid this cause of error in your characterisation.
As you will mainly want to work with loose photographs, and not with photographs placed in pages, when you produce a contract proof using Absolute Colorimetric rendering from the ICC profile for the printing condition to the ICC profile for your studio printer, here's a tip.
Your eyes, the eyes of your client, and the eyes of the prepress production manager will see the white white of the surrounding unprinted margins of the paper, and will judge the printed area of the paper relative to that.
If, therefore, your untrimmed contract proof and the contract proof from Adobe InDesign or QuarkPress, or a EFI or other proofing RIP, are placed side by side in the viewing box your untrimmed contract proof will work as the visual reference for the media white.
The measured reference for the media white is in the ICC profile for the printing condition, to be precise in the WTPT White Point tag that you can see by doubleclicking the ICC profile in the Apple ColorSync Utility. This is the lightness and tint laid down on proof prints.
You, your client and your chosen printer will get on well if you remember to set up your studio lighting, and trim the blank borders of your proof prints. (Another tip: set your Finder to neutral gray and avoid a clutter of white windows, icons and so forth in the Finder when viewing.)
So far, so good. This leaves the nittygritty of specific ICC profiling packages and specific ICC-enabled applications. As for Aperture, do not apply a gamma correction to your colourant patch chart, or to colour managed printing.
As for Adobe applications, which you say you will be comparing with, you should probably be aware that Adobe InDesign CS3 has problems. When targetting an RGB printing device, the prints are not correctly colour managed, but basically bypass colour management.
There's been a discussion on the Apple ColorSync Users List and on Adobe's fora, see the two threads below.

  • Local Area Connections and Device Manager blank

I'm running a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller with Windows 7 machines underneath it. Both on the DC and the clients the Network Connections is blank and there are no Devices in the Device Manager. I found numerous other articles having me check services,
GPOs, Registry settings, etc. However, I can't seem to make progress on resolving this issue. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Based on my research, the blank Device Manager issue is usually due to you have a critical Windows service disabled or your permissions in the registry for the Device Manager
key are corrupt. Please make sure that the Plug and Play is running in the Services. In addition, please check the permission of key blow:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
Please right-click on Enum and choose Permission, then make sure that you have set Everyone with read permission and System with full control permission.
In addition, since your network connection was blank, you can also try to delete the Config key in the following key
    to clear the configuration cache:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
Windows automatically recreates the key if you open Network Connections folder or restart your system.

    Hi,
If the drive is not showing in the list of bootable devices, you can be fairly certain that it has suffered a Hardware failure and will need to be replaced.

  • IPhone doesn't show anywhere except in iTunes and device manager.

My iPhone working, tethering and syncing property but does not show anywhere else. I need to back up the photos after some recent events and on a PC which just creates an encrypted file in an Apple file folder.
I can see the phone using an external program but the copy functions not there anymore. Picture wizard says there is no camera there. I have tried uninstalling the device and re-install. I have removed and installed iTunes and now have restore the phone completely. Picture wizard says there is no camera there. It does show in device manager and iTunes but oesn't show in Windows Explorer.
If I plug it into another computer it doesn't show in that either. Had a client over last night and his iPhone showed up on both computers and both started the camera wizard, So I'm thinking it's something in the phone. I need the photos backed up.
    Thanks

This has really stumped me. I'm fairly well read on the iPhone software and related stuff. I also had some other tech savvy guys here last night and three brains had no answers. One thinks it must be hardware. I tend to disagree with that only because it charges, syncs, restores which tells me the hardware is working fine. i keeping this in mind that it's visible in iTunes(A) and Device Manager(XP). It's not visible in My Computer, Windows, Explorer or Control Panel. I can run a third party application on the iPhone and can see photos but the application won't let me copy them. I have some important photos that I need backed up. I have tried the phone on four other computers and it doesn't show on any where as the other phone shows up and works the way it should on those four computers. Same with reinstalling the drives, first one doesn't install, second one does. That simply narrows it down to the phone. I've restored the phone and it worked perfectly replacing the photos, oh and it was also working 6 weeks ago. So what's stopping it???? Arrr... its got me. I can usually fix those type of issues.

In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
    Copy the contents to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process.
